Xusein September 9th, 2006, 02:18 AM Great pics...
Addis Ababa is a very interesting place...I have a cousin who went there (transferring to go to the UAE) for a while....coming from Somalia, he was shocked...he said it was the most beautiful and modern city that he ever went to...
For Mogadishu, Addis is a model.
Very Controversial September 11th, 2006, 04:20 PM Not Bad! :)

1st Question: Is that hebrew on the storesign?
2nd Question: Are the pictures photoshopped? Because they look awesome!
StormShadow February 13th, 2007, 04:49 AM Looks like the Ge'ez/Ethiopic alphabet.
It could be photoshopped or it was taken during sunbreak of a rainy day.
Carver02 February 19th, 2007, 06:04 AM That's Amharic/Ethiopic on the sign. Almost all signs in Addis Ababa are in Amharic and English.

The highway is placed in the middle of a slum!!
Kenguy March 18th, 2007, 12:47 PM The highway is placed in the middle of a slum!!
It looks more like the outskirts of Addis with low income housing. But its not dense enough to be called a slum.

Hong Kong's spidermen
Reuters
The scaffolding shakes as Sam Chan strides along an 8-foot-long bamboo pole positioned 50 floors above Hong Kong's bustling streets.
Twisting and pulling hard at a black nylon cord, he secures another vertical bamboo pole into place, his leg hooked instinctively around a fixed point. He's been making good progress with his crew in building this lattice in the sky.
"It's just a regular job," he said, glancing out briefly at the skyline behind him and the tiny ships gliding across Victoria Harbour.
Chan, a 34-year-old high-school dropout, has one of Hong Kong's most vertiginous and challenging blue-collar jobs.
He's one of around 4,000 scaffolding workers who spend their working lives dangling outside some of the world's tallest buildings.
The peculiar skills and mental traits required of a scaffolder have kept the profession relatively exclusive and well paid, despite a recent construction slump.
Wages range from $45 (Dh165) a day for apprentices to $100 (Dh367) for masters or "sifu" like Sam. "[Scaffolding workers] have to possess physical endurance, courage... and perseverance," says Chiu Kwok-leung, chairman of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Bamboo Scaffolding Workers Union.
"Can you imagine? We build from the ground up ... every day we climb upwards unceasingly. We need great determination."
The craft, which dates back centuries to mainland China, is not exclusive to Hong Kong. It is practised across China and in countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Singapore.
But Hong Kong, with perhaps the world's greatest concentration of tall buildings, owes a special debt to the humble bamboo pole. Without it, few buildings could be finished or renovated.
Whilst the West prefers metal scaffolding, the great heights of buildings in Hong Kong make this a cumbersome, impractical option.
By using light, cheap and abundant bamboo cut from southern China, small teams of scaffolders are able to sheathe entire buildings in a matter of weeks. Major engineering and construction advances through the years have failed to diminish the city's reliance on the low-tech pole.
"[We] have played a major role in Hong Kong's overall prosperity," said Chiu. Scaffolding instructor Tang Sung-yuen says the trade will continue to endure, even as the city modernises. "In Hong Kong, we will always be needed," he said.
But this has come at a price. In the past 6 years, there have been 20 deaths involving scaffolders, including one of Chiu's apprentices who fell three floors from a building in 2002. Chiu says "negative price competition" among scaffolding firms in recent years has led to lapses in safety standards, with workers rushing jobs to cover their costs.

50 floors, that's impressive.
African Lion August 26th, 2007, 05:54 AM :tongue3: I find it very amazing that they could go 50 stories with banbos. I could see if it was 5 stories but 50?? I know banbo is strong but still, If you look at the link picture you see that the banbos are tied in by rope???
:badnews:
Tbite August 26th, 2007, 07:29 AM That's just ridiculous. In Nigeria all major construction, is done using proper scaffolding. All the structures in Tinapa, where constructed with proper scaffoldings.
A Building that is 50F+ is nothing minor!
I know that Hong Kong, isn't completely developed, but Hong Kong should be past the stage where such buildings are constructed using primitive techniques.
I mean take the High Rises, in Cairo and South Africa. Those places aren't fully developed areas, and they are probably behind Hong Kong economically, but yet structures in those places are constructed with proper scaffolding.

What is more significant-the scaffolding or the final product. Besides i think bamboo is quite strong otherwise why else would they use the material especially in Hong Kong where they have typhoons.
Tbite August 27th, 2007, 10:58 AM Do you know how the "bamboo" scaffolding is put in place?
Workers put the bamboo up manually. They are literally piecing together the bamboo using ropes. No Beams, nothing! This puts the safety of the workers at risk and the quality of construction.
Jave you ever watched any Hong Kong "Mega City" documentaries?
You see videos of people tying together bamboo as they go along. And this is done in 60 to 80 floor buildings. Of course the bamboo is strong, but it isn't jointed adequately. A build up of pressure on the scaffolding would see whole sections of the scaffolding collapsing.
That's why it isn't done in the developed world. One word "Safety"
Kenguy August 27th, 2007, 11:24 AM ^^
You are right Tbite. Safety comes first.

You are right Tbite. Safety comes first.
Does anyone have any info on whether Addis has any plans for the coming Ethiopian millenium celebrations coming soon?Oh, they've been planning that since at least last year. They've had some (relatively low-key) tourist promos to attract visitors for the new millenium. I don't know exactly what all the festivities are but Sept. 11th is going to be one heck of a party in Addis.

I doubt the event being ''low key'' as they have invited some international artists like Beyonce Knowles for the event. I have a feeling it will be a major event.

I think Carver02 can answer that question.:weird:
African Lion November 5th, 2007, 01:10 AM the diaspora is financing the majority of the building boom. Social infrastructure is improving somewhat but sanitation and ICT are still big problems.

Carver02 November 6th, 2007, 01:51 AM These pics of Addis are beautiful. The buildings seem to be growing and spreading like mushrooms. This makes me very happy. I don't have hard data, but I'm pretty sure that Addis must be one of the world's fastest growing (as a percentage of existing buildings) cities in the world.
This is the tangible proof of Ethiopia's ~7% GDP growth rate.

Selameta November 17th, 2007, 10:08 PM Just got back from Addis Ababa, and that place is booming like no other city I've seen including Karthoum. On almost every block there is something new going up and the road infrastructure has also shown immense improvement since I was there last time. With such pace of development, It will easily overtake Nairobi within the next two to three years as the economic/business center of East Africa. You have to see it to believe it!!

Ya right!!! The economy is not growing that fast. those buildings should not give you any indications of economic growth. poverty alienation and wealth creation are the real indicators of growth. nairobi is still miles ahead of addis and looks almost "developed" according to the pictures on these forums.

relax, friend. someone might

......or a "pretend"-ethiopian. Lol.
I agree that Nairobi is still very developed compared to addis,
but if you visit Addis you would be just as amazed as my friend Selameta is. It is really growing that fast.
like I posted before, international instutions like the IMF and the World Bank are much better unbias sources than some internet discussion-room pessimist.
The facts are there...they all point towards growth.
Welcome Selameta!! ENJOY YOUR POSTING EXPERIENCE FRIEND.
Selameta November 18th, 2007, 08:30 PM African Lion, the only knock I can think of against addis is that it doesn't really have a downtown with a sanitized and tightly packed highrises like the Nairobi's CBD. Addis is more like LA--it is spread out with many mini-downtowns all over the city(Bole, Arat kilo,Leghare, Piassa, mesqel square...).
Also, Nairobi is far more segregated than Addis based on income/class. In addis you will too often see highrise buildings and swanky villas in the slums with the poor and the rich all mixed up with some notable exceptions(Bole, Hayat, Yeka, Old Airport).
I believe by now(Nov 2007), Addis may already have more highrises than Nairobi but they all are scattered all over the city in almost haphazard manner, so it doesn't look as impressive as it would if they were all tightly packed in a certain section of the city.
Addis is more like Bombay--huge but very vibrant. While parts of Nairobi can pass for a slice of a first world country--almost a londonish cosmopolitan vibe with all the Asian businesses and well-heeled Africans blended in with a sizable white population..
kenyan24 November 18th, 2007, 11:32 PM Whites, indians and arabs make up less than 1% of the kenyan population.
African Lion November 18th, 2007, 11:44 PM skipperbill, Im no pessimist, just a realist. The international institutions gel all of their data directly from the government and we all know that they tend to lie and exaggerate about everything.

ethiopia's economy is growing at a 10% rate, and there is a real boom in that country but the fundamental question is wether it will maintain that boom. if it maintains that growth rate it might surpass kenya(which is growing @ 7.1% rate) but not in two years maybe 10 to 15 yrs. lets not forget that construction is just part of it there other things like ICT, Effective govt and stable political climate, right policies and availability of skilled labour force.

yes. I agree with this.
Ethiopia has to sustain this growth and also to fight other issues such as inflation which tends to get out of hand when growth outstrips raw capital.
good points nairoberry.

By the look of things, Ethiopia's growth may continue its growth rate of 8-10% for at least the medium term. Kenya may also achieve this figures sometime soon. It makes me happy to see the entire region prospering as it is doing now.

Nairobi is unique in its own way as an African city, I wouldn't compare it to London though even if there is quite alot of British influence in various aspects of the city.

StormShadow December 9th, 2007, 09:12 PM Excellent! THX for the images.
arzaranh December 10th, 2007, 09:27 PM i have a question that has been plaguing me for some time, firstly to my understanding ethiopians are very proud of the fact that they are the only african country to not have been effectively colonized by the europeans. they also have an illustrious history of the written word, yet in most of the pictures i have ever seen of any ethiopian city 99% of all signs are written in english, and quite frequently when ethiopic fidels are used the english translation is more prominent than the amharic/tigrina or what ever. why is this so? it seems almost as if the ethiopians take no/very little pride in their own script.
abesha December 11th, 2007, 05:47 AM arzaranh, it's a very complex issue. The alphabet is used by Amharic and Tigrigna (maybe a couple of other languages). Other ethnic groups do not want to use it, and thus the latin alphabet is used for those languages.
That script was actually used for all languages in Ethiopia until about a decade ago, when Meles Zenawi changed the usage. The latin alphabet is seen as more universal. Basically, those who argue for its usage state that the Amharic script was imposed on the other ethnicities.
I agree with you, it is sad. What can you do.
African Lion December 11th, 2007, 08:04 AM Most things are in English and Amharic. Amharic was the lingua franca for many years but now a Tigrayan rebel group is in charge and they have decided that people should use their own ethnic groups language. This is a good thing except that their is no lingua franca that is used in schools and public places. Amharic is still the official language in government and urban areas but english is also popular. I personally think that English should be the lingua franca because it is the lingua franca of the world and is used for business, science, and computers. An additional reason is you don't have to argue over which native language to use.
Mulopwe December 11th, 2007, 08:48 PM This is a country with very limited resources but they still manage to build and transform Addis. Kudo to the leaders !
Tarrex December 11th, 2007, 10:27 PM This is not a country with limited resources. This is a country who cannot afford to use it's own resources!
abesha December 12th, 2007, 07:23 AM Mulwope, if you mean natural resources, you have to remember that in terms of exploration, Ethiopia is virtually a virgin country. Very very VERY little of the country has been prospected for natural resources. Keep in mind that Europeans didn't get the chance to turn it upside down to look for minerals so in essence, anything could lie there, undiscovered.
So yes, it has few known natural resources, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't have any at all.
But that aside, I honestly believe that Ethiopia would transform VERY fast, if a much more liberal stance on trade, business, economy, etc was adopted. Sadly, I don't think that will happen unless there is a change in government.
The potential is definitely there, the diaspora is waiting for the opportunity to go back and invest, yet the government keeps getting in the way.
All the new buildings that you see are built mostly by individuals, in a country that is still much more socialist than liberal. You see people trying to create opportunities in spite of the government's resistance. When a more open economic policy is adopted, Ethiopia will blossom in no time.
To give you an idea of the pro-socialist stance of the government, the state-owned Telecommunications is the sole operator of cellphones. We are virtually the only country left on the continent with a state-owned cellphone monopoly; understandably, we also have one of the lowest penetration rates in the world, including the continent and the service is lousy at best.
Oh well, I'll stop here, otherwise I can go on and on. It's a topic that gets me off on a tangent LOL.

Hahahaha:lol:
The Ethiopian telephone company has been around a hundred years and the idiots of government cant give people with money telephone access. Absolutely pathetic, Somalia has no government but its cell phone service and rates are the lowest in Africa. This is a great example of the incompetency of Marxist governments. Another reason they don't want good telecommunications is their paranoia that the people will use it to overthrow them which tells you how illegitimate they are in the first place.
skipperBill December 12th, 2007, 09:10 PM Good topics here..especially on liberalization and the like.
please continue..
I wish we would have more of these discussion here. I see very little being discussed about Africas economic future...EVEN IN THE BUSINESS SECION.
That should change I think because it is an important issue.
Anyway. great comments guys :okay:

There is a huge housing problem in Addis. People are living in squalor because good quality housing at an affordable price is non-existent. Real estate developments are geared toward the rich, with houses selling in the 6 figures in US dollars!
Medium income real estate developments are badly needed, and the demand is there. Note the satellite dishes on these shacks.

Addis is one of the safest cities you could ever go to. Random violent crime is pretty much unheard of. If you hear of violence, it's always among people who know each other, like lovers, or for revenge.
I'm a woman btw, and I would go out with my girlfriends clubbing and we would walk from club to club through deserted streets at 3-4 am. We would see foreigners walking too.
It's that safe.
The only thing to watch out for is petty theft in crowded or market areas, like cell phones, jewelry, purses, but even that is really not that bad. Just something to keep in mind.

why not ge'ez? at least then every ethnic group would have to learn it and it would still be ethiopian. that's why i like kiswahili and the EAC nations. they have settled on an african language that even though it is an ethnic tongue most people who speak it are non-native speakers and no one is jealous.

African Lion December 14th, 2007, 12:04 AM African Lion, LOL. I'm a woman, but I thought you guys would appreciate it
:D Yikerta, I thought we were all guys.
What's that for question?
Azaranh She is Ethiopian!
Those questions are just stupid..
That is the main reason why the whole africa is divided! That is why we always fight each other! That is what we will be remembered for! We will be remembered for killing each other with no reason, like animals!
Ethiopia will remain divided as long as this question exists
There is nothing wrong with asking that question, there is still room for ethnic identity. Africans must consider themselves Ethiopian, Somalian etc first and their ethnic identity second if we are going to have stability and development. Ethnic identity is one of the things that has held Africa back and in a state of war. Europe is homogeneous and there was never much ethnic tension but in africa we are "too heterogeneous and that has created many problems. We are human beings first but we Africans must put the nation first, before ethnicity to have better harmony.

FM 2258 December 14th, 2007, 10:44 PM Addis is one of the safest cities you could ever go to.
African Lion, LOL. I'm a woman, but I thought you guys would appreciate it
That's good to know it's relatively safe. You took some really good pictures and I can't wait to visit Ethiopia. I noticed Ethiopian Airlines has some pretty good tour packages so I might have to take up one of those.

Ge'ez as you may know has 7 vowels, but instead of representing the vowels only in letters, to the most part, the effects of the vowels is represented by changing the consonants a little. One very important point you might also like to know is there is only a single way you can pronounce a word, in most cases. These two points are important in learning it. The rest is taking the time in memorizing the letters systematically. Needs time and energy. Know this too..they tell you Ge'ez has 648 or more letters. However that's all you need to know in order to avoid the "spelling" and "pronunciation" issues in other languages such as English. If Fidel did not try to list all possibilities of sounds a consonant makes when in combination of each vowel, you will only end up with about 30 letters. (the first column in the Fidel matrix.)
once you know the letters and the sound they represent, reading will be a breath. No trickery called "spelling" You write what you pronounce, you pronounce what you read- only a single way... that is liberating.
Amharic does have flaws as do other languages but when it comes to its alphabet system its excellent.
By the way I see all these Ads and billboards written in English, whats up with that... Its such a weak, meaningless thing. We know Addis is an international city, so is Tokyo. You don't see the Japanese abandoning their Kanji or write their ads in English. That was appalling to see in these pictures. I think its tied to the other weak meaningless habit Ethios have of using English words in between their Amharic. It is a rampant thorn in the culture.
This is not the forum to discuss this topic though so I will refrain from making this get too long.

lamrof December 29th, 2007, 09:16 PM As I see it in Addis lanes are not enforced. Also one big problem I saw in Nairobi and Addis is that, motorist clog intersections knowing that they have no hope of making it through. In the US you will be fined if you do that, so motorists are expected to make sure they will not stop in the middle of an intersection in traffic jam situations before they move in. If caught the fines are hefty. I think this simple rule will save lots of problems in Addis. It was sad to see that ppl clog intersections which has a spiral effect everywhere and the entire route systems fails. The funny thing is this same ppl will sit in their cars and blow their horns for eternity like it will make a difference. Funny shit. Who and how can we suggest this?
Generally in the third world there is a tendency of distrusting the rule of law. Most poor societies see the rule of law an enforcer of their condition, poverty, and protector of the rich. Most Black Americans see the law that way in the US. In the US the major enforcer of the law is the public itself. PPl will give your vehicle license to cops if they see you do wrong. In Tokyo as crazy as it is, they respect rules and order and trust it. I think a sense of order goes a long way. Its a great tradition Ethiopians have only in domestic situations. There is respect, and calm orderliness within homes. In public however the rule of the jungle is king. As seen in Autobus Terra for long distance bus travel. Crazy shit there. The authorities can fix it but indifference is rampant. Who and how can we suggest to use seating per assignments.

This picture looks ironic because the current regime are bigger Communists.
There used to be a joke that when the Woyane took over towns they used to take down pictures of Lenin and Marx and put up BIGGER pictures of lenin and Marx. ( crying on the inside)
.
abesha January 9th, 2008, 04:25 PM LOL, I've heard that too. It's both hilarious and frustrating. I can't wait until a liberal government takes over. I'm telling you, growth will be explosive. Ethiopia has so much potential, we just need a government that supports its people.

There is a new spa resort somewhere in the Oromia region but it's way bigger than this one. I found this article.
new resort and spa has opened on the shores of the Kurriftu Lake at Bishoftu town in Ethiopia. The Kurriftu resort and spa covers 107,640sq ft (10,000sq m) and has created more than 100 jobs in the local area.
Facilities at the property include a swimming pool and restaurants. The resort will be run by owner and general manager Tadiwos Getachew, who has announced he now intends to begin work on another resort and spa at Lake Tana in the Amhara state, Ethiopia.
Ethiopia: Kuriftu Resort in a 50 mil Br expansion project
Published 08/29/2007 - 1:46 a.m. EST
Slide Show
Kuriftu Resort, one of the most expensive hospitality establishments in Ethiopia, launched a 50 million Br expansion project. The Debre Zeit (Bishoftu) municipality granted a 15,000sqm plot for the project.
Located 50Km east of Addis Abeba and established by Boston Partners Plc, Kuriftu was established five years ago and officially inaugurated on January 20, 2007.
Constructed with indigenous materials and furnished with traditional local and far-Eastern architectural elegance, the resort has 25 rooms, spa, saloon, conference hall and swimming pool. Under the expansion, the construction of 25 additional rooms, a conference hall which accommodates 400 people and seven presidential villas will be included.
Tadios Belete, general manager of Boston Partners, a company established with 10 million dollars, told Fortune that construction works of the project have already been launched.
A bedroom at the resort costs 100 dollars to 200 dollars for a single night's stay. The accommodation prices include breakfast, kayaking, mountain biking, and use of the facilities for ping-pong, billiards, movie theatre, swimming pool and steam (sauna) jacuzzi.
Tadios and Tera Chang, Americans, own Boston Partners both possessing equal shares. The company has a 10-storey building on Africa Avenue (Bole Road) and is also constructing a similar resort in Bahir Dar around Lake Tana on a 10,000sqm plot it took over from the Bahir Dar municipality at a project cost of 20 million Br.
Tadios told Fortune that they currently have 400 workers, 82 of which have been working since the resort began operation. According to Tadios, a decision has been reached to construct residential houses on the 4,000sqm plot obtained from the Burayu town of the Oromia Regional State, 20Km west of Addis Abeba, and reward the 80 workers.
Kuriftu has planned to stage a celebration on the eve of the Millennium. However, the volume of the lake it is situated on that bears its name rose, engulfing a stage constructed for the festivity. The Dejecha River changed its course, broke a moderately sized dam and joined Kuriftu Lake.
At the end of last week, Tadios tried to control this situation with the city officials and the Debre Zeit Agricultural Centre which was also the victim of the river overflow.
Kibebew Asefa (PhD), general manager of the centre told Fortune there is a system, which discharges the water whenever such incidents occur. However, as the sewerage system has now been filled with silt, the water could not squeeze out of the Lake, causing it to flood the stage. He also criticised the fact that the Resort is constructed much too close to the shore of the Lake.
The immediate measure the company has planned to take is to decrease the volume of the Lake by discharging it by pipe to the Modjo River.
Tadios declined to comment on the matter, phrasing the incident as temporary. To entertain its customers for the Millennium, the company had made an agreement with Blue Note Band, a local group that commonly presents shows at the Coffee House around Sidist Kilo.
