Google Earth your city!

Show scenes of your city from overhead by using Google Maps (or from Yahoo, Ask, or whatever else)! To do this (and if someone else has a better way, please show me) just click on the link page at the right hand corner, and then put a hyperlink on this message board!

Here's a little bit of Hartford, the larger zooms have bad quality for some reason, so I am showing the overall areas...

Downtown Hartford (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=14&ll=41.767407,-72.673273&spn=0.029768,0.05785)

My hood...the South End (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.738336,-72.694645&spn=0.014891,0.028925)

The West End...one of the better areas in the city...getting somewhat gentrified (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.7708,-72.695289&spn=0.014883,0.028925)

Now we are getting to a rich area...the Northwest part of Hartford... (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.775152,-72.711596&spn=0.014882,0.028925)

From glitz to the ghetto--projects sitting uneasily next to mansions... (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.785617,-72.70443&spn=0.01488,0.028925)

Just south of my hood...Suburbia!! (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=14&ll=41.66977,-72.720308&spn=0.029813,0.05785)

I zoomed in on this one...my school...Central Connecticut State University (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=16&ll=41.692511,-72.766099&spn=0.007451,0.014462)

The inner Hartford region--Centered on Downtown... (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=13&ll=41.772848,-72.674561&spn=0.059531,0.159645)

Google Earth your city!

Just south of my hood...Suburbia!! (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=14&ll=41.66977,-72.720308&spn=0.029813,0.05785)

That's some serious suburbia.

I'll do Queens:

First off, the three downtowns:

Downtown Flushing, the nation's largest Chinatown (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=40.75883,-73.829777&spn=0.00785,0.021629&t=k&om=1)

Jamaica Center, a very urban rectangle surrounded by more typical Queens stuff (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.70444,-73.801775&spn=0.007857,0.021629&t=k)

Long Island City, lowrise, industrial, and Brooklyn-ish (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.7449,-73.951013&spn=0.007852,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=A)

now other places of interest:

LaFrak City, densest census tract in the nation outside of Manhattan (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.734576,-73.860912&spn=0.007853,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=A)

North Shore Towers, these three 35 story condo buildings have their own private golf course and underground mall on grounds (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.75636,-73.714485&spn=0.007851,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=A)

Oakland Gardens, my hood (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.751158,-73.746693&spn=0.007851,0.021629&t=k)

When a Target is so close to an airport... why draw a massive target on top of it? (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.783434,-73.83188&spn=0.007847,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=A)

Broad Channel, interesting nautical community with subway access (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.602761,-73.820636&spn=0.007869,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=A)

Jamaica Estates... and thus the curvey suburban street was born (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=40.71568,-73.785961&spn=0.007855,0.021629&t=k)

Flushing Meadows Park, where the Worlds Fairs were (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Queens,+NY&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=17&ll=40.746631,-73.844358&spn=0.003926,0.010815&t=k)

^^ I love Queens...it is a great place, BTW...I know people who live in LeFrak...that place is HUGE.

That suburban area is not even the worst...I'll show some more later...BTW, here's some more of Hartford and some inner suburbs...

Franklin Avenue-- Little Italy (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=16&ll=41.735694,-72.675698&spn=0.007446,0.019956)

Brainard Airport---not a commerical airport...and a waste of space (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.738593,-72.656279&spn=0.014891,0.039911)

Right across the river...what was formerly Rentschler Field (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&z=15&ll=41.750664,-72.632675&spn=0.014888,0.039911)

Holy shit! I just discovered Windows Live Local today, and it has birds' eye view. It works for most cities and some suburbs of bigger cities, though at farther distances back, but some places I assumed it would work, like Silicon Valley, it doesn't, so it must be pretty hit or miss whether the function works. Anywho, same places as before, but birds' eye view... or as I am going to affectionately call it from now on, my hometown if it were Sim City 4:

Downtown Flushing
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/1654/downtownflushingnj8.png

Jamaica Center

Long Island City
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8661/longislandcitycb4.png

my hood, built in the 70s and 80s, hence the prevalence of driveways. Everything except the townhouses with the peaked roofs is multifamily, so it's actually pretty dense.
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5828/myhoodxs5.png

Holy freakin' suburban parking lot, Batman!

I just had to include a shot of Edgewater Park, though it's in the Bronx, it's right across the river from Queens and LI. It was built as a makeshift getaway community (notice how the houses just sit on the street, no lawns or even sidewalks) and is by far the most unique neighborhood in NYC, and probably one of the most unique in the whole country. 675 single family homes on 55 acres of land, and its own police force and volunteer firefighters. A mere two streets connect it to the rest of the city. The entire community went co-op in an effort to protect itself from development, and a private local company owns all the land beneath the houses. It's like a small town where everyone knows each other and looks out for each other, etc... a small cry from the city it just so happens to be located in. Pop 3,000, I believe. It is often incorrectly represented on street maps, and many times even left off entirely.

Yes, Windows Live Local is nice, isn't it?

My company is actually developing something like this, called MultiVision (http://www.mv-usa.com). It was originally developed by the Israeli Mossad, but it's now declassified. Very similar to this, only you can extract building heights, etc. Very useful from a government agency GIS, disaster planning, land use planning, stuff like that.

At least the "Arrowhead" one has some good population density going on, but still, what a waste of space.

In case you can't tell, I hate golf. Big golf. Mini golf is OK, it actually requires some talent. Big golf is played primarily by wealthy white business assholes who use the game to get together and carve up this country a little bit more. And how much talent does it take? Hit the ball, walk after it. Hit it again. Whoa, Einstein! Not to mention the ghastly clothing, and the complete arrogant waste of space by needing acres upon acres of land for a sport where the object (ball) is an inch across. By that logic, a bowling alley should be the size of an entire city. Not to mention it's the most boring thing on TV, though televised bowling isn't far behind.

OK, enough of my ranting. This thread is about Google Earth cities. These suburbs suck and they all really do look the same!!! Except mine :) it's the only one that's grid based thus far.

I can somewhat respect older people who use it as a means to stay fit, there's not really anything wrong with that. It's these idiots that claim they do it for fitness but use the stupid carts which are one of the "sects" that really PO me.

I have a feeling that were the Buffalo area to get one of these, it will happen outside Niagara Falls or Fort Erie, Ontario. High concentration of existing courses and alot of empty space. Either there or Clarence or Wheatfield.

There are three more, that I know of...

Yahoo Maps (maps.yahoo.com), Ask Maps (http://maps.ask.com/maps), and Windows Live Local (local.live.com).

The first two are basically the same as Google, but Live Local has street level aerials of certain cities (like NY, Boston, LA, and more...)

I don't know for sure, like I said I've never used it. I'm pretty sure it had the Moon in there though.

Holy density, Batman! Makes LaFrak look like a fur trading outpost! :)

I have a co-worker from China, Beijing actually if I'm not mistaken.

How's China doing as far as suburbs are concerned - alot? None? Hopefully somebody can learn from our mistakes.
the surburb in chinese large cities, such as shenzhen and shanghai, are mostly high rise commicblocks, and that's not look like surburb. the difference for surburb and downtown is -----downtonw eara has some huge commercial centers , shoppingmalls\ supermakerts\expensive shops\museums etc.
but in those small cities, surburb consists of the private house or lower commicblocks, and greengrass, farmlands.

you mentioned beijing, beijing is more like a masculine cities(a strong and cool male), while shanghai is a femal with a heavy make-ups. lol

if you come to china, i'd rather you visit chinese rural earas, there are much fun, since you are from westen developed countries.

It is a great joy for me as well...and now that the whole state of Connecticut on it...it is a greater one now!!
a million thanks.
i'll try.
in china, we have a software called QQ, that can make you grab any picture on your monitor, and transfered into JEPG or GIF picture. that's very convenient cut those googleearth pics and upload on SSC.

There's also NASA World-wind. I DLed that one at work but I've never used it, so I don't know how good it is. I believe that package also includes the Moon and Mars, though I don't think you're going to be finding any cities or golf courses there.

I have it. It is like google earth. The pics arent that new though. The moon and mars are on it.

How are you guys getting pics off of Google Earth? You can't even right click to save them to a file or copy and paste or anything like that.

Well...

At the right-hand side of the picture, there is a link that says "Link to this page" which shows the actual address of the page. Then you can just put it as a hyperlink when replying to the thread, like a normal link...

As for showing it actually...I do not know, but it is possible as seen...

I think he's hosting them on personal webspace though. So it then becomes a function of how much space you have.

Yeah that's unfortunate. It's evident throughout the US as well, some states don't have very good imagery throughout, some barely have any.

Now, the whole state is covered, but the zoom has to not be as blurry...

This topic is getting more replies than thought originally...LOL.

Looks like Stamford is a tale of two cities...

Nice and dense downtown and shoreline, but then trails off downtown into rich mansions covered by unlimited forest cover until hitting New York...the rich love their trees!

I just noticed that Concord and most of NH is now better quality. However the close-in zoom isn't that great. And it's out-of-date, I'm looking at things I know were recently built (roads in particular) and they're not even under construction. My guess is these particular ones are 2002-03-ish.

They've also been updated in and around Buffalo - there's no longer ice in the lake and the Bethlehem Steel site has changed, another other things I've noticed.

Sweet; you can do it ok, here you go;

Downtown Rochester
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/downtownsky.jpg

The mansions of East Avenue and some of the upscale Park Avenue area of the city
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/eastave.jpg

My old 'hood in the suburb of Greece. (our house was on the 4th one in from the left by the church)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/borrowdale.jpg

And what the hell; here's some of Apex too;

"Downtown Apex" (meaning East Salem St; the one old commercial street in this town of over 30,000)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/DTapex.jpg

And, here's most of the town. If you guys think there's sprawl in the NE. Check this out, and keep in mind that this is what would be considered an "inner ring" suburb.
