General Information
Height: 700m to 850m (Official height held as a secret)
Floors: 160 or more
Start: February 1, 2005
Completion: June 30, 2009
Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)
Developer: EMAAR Properties

"The World’s Tallest Building" going up in Dubai, EAU. The tower will be so tall the developers want to keep the tower's height a secret all the way to its official opening schedule in December 2008. The world famous architect firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) (http://www.som.com/) is behind the 465 000m² large office, residential, retail and hotel tower which is situated in the heart of Dubai, close to the exlusive Sheikh Zayed Road and close Business Bay.

When completed, it will hold the record in all four categories as recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (i.e., highest structure, roof, antenna and occupied floor) and have the highest publicly accessible observation deck. The tip of the spire can be seen by a person 95 km (60 miles) away. A person in the Observation Deck can see as far away as 80 km (50 miles), which is more than twice the distance from Dubai to Al Ain. The design of the Burj Dubai is derived from the geometries of the desert flower and the patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. It combines these historical and cultural influences with cutting-edge technology to achieve a high-performance building which will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city of Dubai.

World Trade Center

The reconstruction of World Trade Center in New York has long been discussed, and finally, almost 5 years after the destruction of WTC on 11th of September a complete layout has been announced. Three new towers have been announced, 2 WTC, 3 WTC and 4 WTC, each tower with different architect. Construction is expected to start in 2007, and the whole new World Trade Center will be completed in 2012.

>> Freedom Tower (541m / 108 floors)
A 25 meters high public lobby topped by a series of mechanical floors form a 61 meter tall building base. 69 tenant floors rise above the base to 341.4meter elevation. Mechanical floors, two floors to be occupied by the Metropolitan Television Alliance, restaurants and observation decks culminate in an observation deck and glass parapet that mark 415.1m and 417m respectively — the heights of the original Twin Towers. An antenna supported by a cable structure rises to a final height of 541.3 meters.

Location - Freedom Tower is located in the northwest corner of the 64 500 square meter World Trade Center site, bounded by Vesey, West, Washington and Fulton Streets.

Building Amenities - Observation decks, world-class restaurants, and the Manhattan Television Alliance (MTVA) broadcast and antennae facilities. All floors served by direct elevators. Cross-over elevator banks at floors 20, 29, 37 and 45. Ground floor contains a secure, 45-foot-high marble and glass entry lobby facing Greenwich Street, where access is limited to black cars and taxis. Loading dock with five bays accessible from Washington Street.

Construction starts in January 2008, and the tower is on schedual to be topped out during spring 2009. Facades will be completed by summer 2010, and the tower will be fully completed by 1st Quarter 2011.

>> 2 WTC / 200 Greenwich Street (408m / 76 floors)
Foster and Partners has designed a 76-story tower at 200 Greenwich. The tower, which will rise to 408 meters, is bounded by Greenwich Street to the west, Church Street to the east, Vesey Street to the north and Fulton Street to the south. It will contain 13 285 square meters of retail (8 825 square meters at or above street level), 60 office floors that total 213 676 square meters, four trading floors and a 20 meters high office lobby.

Arranged around a central cruciform core, the tower comprises four blocks, containing light-filled, flexible, column-free office floors that rise to the 59th floor, where the glass facades shear off at an angle to address the Memorial Park. Extending the logic of the core, the volume of the tower is punctuated on all four sides by notches—elegantly breaking up the mass of the tower into four interconnected blocks. The upper floor contained within the summit provides an opportunity for spectacular multiple-height function rooms with sweeping views of the Memorial, the river and the city.

Said Lord Foster, "We are pleased to unveil our design for Tower Two on the site of the World Trade Center, a building that symbolizes the renaissance of New York on the skyline while also re-establishing and reviving Greenwich Street at ground level. The crystalline top of the tower respects the master plan and bows down to the Memorial Park commemorating the tragic events that unfolded here. But it is also a powerful symbol of hope for the future. The dramatic height of the tower celebrates the spirit that has historically driven Manhattan to build tall, and the diamond-shaped top will be a crowning landmark on the city's skyline."

Foundation work begins summer 2008, with construction start by spring 2009. The tower is on schedual to be topped out in December 2010. Facades will be completed by autumn 2011, and the tower will be fully completed by 2nd Quarter 2012.

>> 3 WTC / 175 Greenwich Street (381m / 71 floors)
The 71-story 175 Greenwich tower, designed by Richard Rogers Partnership, will rise to 352 meters above street level. It is located on the site bounded by Greenwich Street to the west, Church Street to the east, Dey Street to the north and Cortlandt Street to the south. The tower will include 12 356 square meters of retail (6 781 square feet at or above street level); 54 office floors (195 096 square meters) and five trading floors.

The design uses a structural load-sharing system of diamond-shaped bracing which helps to articulate the building's east-west configuration. All corners of the tower are column free to ensure that occupants of the office levels enjoy unimpeded 360-degree panoramic views of New York. The upper levels of the tower appear to straddle the lower levels—the "podium building"—which emphasizes the interlocking nature of the base with the upper part of the building. The three-level high lobby on Greenwich Street offers a "big picture window" onto the World Trade Center Memorial.

Richard Rogers said,"175 Greenwich will occupy a hugely significant site in Lower Manhattan and in New York. We believe we have designed a transparent and legible building which responds both to the architectural and social context of the area, and one which will make a fitting contribution to the New York skyline."

Foundation work begins December 2007, with construction start by early 2009. The tower is on schedual to be topped out by spring 2010. Facades will be completed by early 2011, and the tower will be fully completed by 3rd Quarter 2011.

>> 4 WTC / 150 Greenwich Street (288m / 61 floors)
The 61-story 150 Greenwich Street tower, designed by Fumihiko Maki and Maki and Associates, is located on the site bounded by Greenwich Street to the west, Church Street to the east, Cortlandt Street to the north and Liberty Street to the south. The 288.7 meters tall building will include 53 office floors (167 225 square meters), as well as five floors of retail, three of which are at or above grade.

The tower has an abstract quality—minimal, light, cool in color and ephemeral, changing with the light of day. Seen from a distance, the building presents a unique angular profile at the crown effectuating the spiral composition formed by the group of four towers and looking back to the Memorial and the Freedom Tower. Facing Church Street is an 85-foot atrium offering a new dynamic urban experience by amalgamating the transit hall and retail into a single, identifiable whole, featuring multiple cascading floors that will enliven the street and become a symbolic feature of a revitalized World Trade Center.

Said Fumihiko Maki, "The fundamental approach to the design of the tower at 150 Greenwich is two-fold—a 'minimalist' tower that achieves an appropriate presence, quiet but with dignity, becoming a tribute to the Memorial, and a 'podium' that becomes a catalyst in activating and enlivening the immediate urban environment as part of the revitalization of Downtown New York."

Foundation work begins December 2007, with construction start by early 2009. The tower is on schedual to be topped out by spring 2010. Facades will be completed by early 2011, and the tower will be fully completed by 3rd Quarter 2011.

Floors: 101
Year (start): 1997
Year (end): 2008
GFA: 377,300 m²
Elevators: 31
Escalators: 33
Costs at completion: $850,000,000
Location: Pudong, Shanghai, China

Two architect firms is involved in the project, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (http://www.kpf.com/) and East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd. The tower contains commercial offices, a shopping centre, a museum and a 6-star hotel. The foundation stone was laid on August 27, 1997, but a fund shortage on the Japanese side caused by Asian financial crisis halted the project, and nothing had since been done to the projected structure. Construction finally resumed on February 13th, 2003. The design of the opening near the top of the tower was changed in mid-October, 2005; from a circular to a rectangular opening. Architect and developer claim that it is cheaper and easier to implement the new design.

CCTV Headquarters

The new headquarters of China Central Television (CCTV) is being constructed adjacent to the Third Ring Road in Beijing, China, on a 10ha site in the new Central Business District. The tower will be 234m tall with 49 floors. Construction period is 2004 to 2008, architect company is OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) (http://www.oma.nl/).

The project was started in september 2004 following a review of the design by a panel of Chinese experts. The construction is scheduled to be completed in time to broadcast the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The development is being undertaken by the Chinese Government as part of a plan to redevelop central Beijing with innovative and functional architecture, while preserving historic buildings at the same time.

The new building will involve two 'L' shaped high-rise towers linked at the top and the bottom at an angle to form a loop, which has been described as a 'Z' criss-cross. The total construction cost is estimated at €600 million ($750 million). The CCTV tower will employ 10,000 people following completion in 2008. But the construction was daleyted because of the opposition against this buildings cost, so the developers say the building will probably not be completed before 2009.

Shard London Bridge / London Bridge Tower

It was designed by architect Renzo Piano for a site on the Southwark side of London Bridge, next to London Bridge station, at 32 London Bridge Street. It would replace Southwark Towers, a 24-storey office building which was completed in 1976. The tower will be 310 metres (1016 feet) tall and have 72 floors, plus a further 16 radiator floors in the roof, making it the tallest building in the country. After a lengthy public inquiry, it was granted full planning permission in November 2003.

When it was first announced, it was hoped that it would be the tallest building in Europe on completion. This will no longer be the case, however, as there is a 340 m (1115 ft) building already under construction in Moscow. Another skyscraper, the Bishopsgate Tower, was submitted for planning permission in London and was originally proposed to exceed the height of the Shard by a metre. However, the scheduled height of the Bishopsgate Tower has now been reduced, making the Shard set to become the tallest building in London (and in Britain) once again.

Construction was expected to begin in 2005, with completion in 2009. However in 2004, the company PricewaterhouseCoopers, who hold a long-term lease on Southwark Towers, decided that they were not willing to vacate before 2006. This pushed the potential completion date back to the end of 2010. Actual demolition of the current site is now expected to take place in late 2006 or early 2007, ready in time for the tower to start construction in summer 2007 with completion by the end of 2010.

The building project will also involve major improvements to the concourse and facilities of London Bridge station. It will include shops, offices and flats as well as a museum and a public piazza. A hotel, to be operated by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts as their first European location, is expected to take up around a fifth of the available space. A large pre-let for office space in the tower was also made by Transport for London, who intend it to be their new headquarters.

Another notable feature of the building will be a public viewing gallery at the top. This is expected to draw over 2 million visitors a year, around the same number who visit the London Eye.

Al Mogran
Khartoum - Sudan

Alsunut Development Company Ltd. is introducing Almogran – Khartoum’s new business and residential district strategically located at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles. The new Almogran is a development to a standard and scale previously unseen in Sudan or the region.

A brand new 160-acre Central Business District (CBD). This state-of-the-art, prime commercial real estate will act as a hub for Eastern Africa’s modern business market. Almogran is located on the junction between The White and the Blue Nile. The CBD has been carefully master planned to create a dynamic and livable business environment, with pedestrian-friendly tree-lined streets, a river walk, and a mix of business, commercial, and residential properties. All of this comes together at the only place in the world where it is possible to have a spectacular view of the three Niles.

To the south of Almogran CBD, along the banks of the White Nile, lies a 1500-acre residential development featuring a variety of carefully planned neighborhoods of luxurious villas, townhouses, and apartments, complete with supporting neighborhood shops, schools, and recreational and leisure facilities. The development includes an 18-hole signature golf course and resort, public parks and gardens, with preservation of the Sunuut Forest Reserve.

Almogran will be served by a dedicated Public Development Authority (PDA) whose responsibility will be to give support to all investors and to ensure adherence to Urban Design Guidelines during and after the development process. The PDA also provides a management function for the provision and up-keep of all utilities and services, thereby maintaining the high development standards and maximizing the value of Almogran for the future.

Fordham Spire

Proposed for a prominent 89 000 square metre site on North Water Street, adjacent to Lake Shore Drive and near the entrance to Navy Pier, the Fordham Spire will rise to a height of 444.4m at its roof and approximately 609.6m at the tip of its spire, making it the tallest building in the nation.

“Calatrava’s design advances the Chicago tradition of skyscrapers as sculptural structures.”

Calatrava’s design is a tall, slender form whose glass facade seems to ripple downward in waves, like the folds of a cloak swirling around a figure. This effect is achieved by means of a structural innovation. Each floor unit of the tower is built out from the central core like a separate box, with gently curving, concave sides. As these boxes are stacked up, each is rotated by a little more than 2 degrees from the one below. The result is that the floors turn 270 degrees around the core as they rise, giving the facade an impression of movement.

Plans for the 85 500 square meters structure include a five-star hotel and 250 of luxurious condominium residences. At terrace level, approximately at the height of Lake Shore Drive, Fordham Spire will have a footprint of only 1 300 square meters on the 89 000 square metre site. The remaining 85% of the site will be left open for landscaped gardens, with access provided from the site to DuSable Park and the lakefront. Some 5 000 square meters of retail and support space is planned for the podium floors overlooking the river and Lake Michigan.

>> The World

The World is an archipelago of artificial islands, shaped like the continents of the Earth, being constructed off the coast of Dubai. The project is inspired by the artificial Palm Islands also being built in Dubai. The World will consist of 250 to 300 smaller private artificial islands divided into four categories — private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. The entire project is slated for completion in 2008.

Each island will range from 23,226 m² to 83,613 m² (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.74–20.66 acres) in size, with 50–100 m of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by boat and helicopter. Islands will be priced from $6.85 million (USD) and average an estimated $25 million (USD) for the $1800 million (USD) project.

Dubai Waterfront is a stunning new development comprised of canals and islands containing luxury hotels and homes. Its 70 kilometer (42 miles) Arabian Canal runs through the desert, while its arc shaped man-made islands produce a shelter around the Palm Jebel Ali. The harbour provides sea access for trade and entertainment, while its surroundings are divided into a series of commercial, residential, resort and amenity areas.

Dubai Waterfront will extend Dubai coastal line by 820 kilometers (492 miles), which is 12 times the current length of Dubai's coastline, and will cover an area of over 81 million squared meters (266 million squared feet). It is intended to be the world's largest beachfront development and the largest man-made development. It will be larger than Manhattan or Beirut and is being built to be Dubai's premium luxury district. The development will feature over 100 different waterfront developments and over 150 planned communities. The various key development areas of Dubai Waterfront can be seen the aerial map below.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) won the architectural competition for the Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou. The
303m / 69 story tall office tower started construction in July 2006, and completion is schedule in fall 2009.

The building is designed to be one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world as it can produce
more energy than it consumes. Among its features are turbines that turn wind into energy for the HVAC system,
solar collector for more power generation, a rainwater collection system, part of which is heated by the sun to provide
hot water. The building is cooled, in part, through heat sinks and vertical vents. The turbines do more than
generate electricity, though. The openings through which the wind flows help reduce the overall wind load on the
skyscraper.

Dancing Towers

The design of Business Bay, Dancing Towers, was revealed at New York's prestigious Guggenheim Museum this week, as part of a retrospective exhibition on UK-based architect, Zaha Hadid. The Iraqi-born architect was recently declared the winner of an international competition to design three iconic towers at Business Bay, the region's business capital. Hashim Al Dabal, CEO of Dubai Properties said: 'Zaha Hadid's design for the Dancing Towers confirms Business Bay's role as a project that reflects Dubai's rapidly changing future.'

Dubai's Dancing Towers consist of three towers, a 84 story tall office tower, and two 68 story tall resdiential and hotel towers.

Magic Mountains
Or Chongqing Green Central Business District (Chongqing GCBD)

Danish architects ((COBE) (http://www.cobe.dk/) is among the crew to draw and plann 4 new so called "Green" cities in Chongqing, Shanghai, Xi’an and Tsinghua, China. Maybe most interesting is the Magic Mountains aka Chongqing Green Central Business District.

Magic Mountains is a green city or district in Chongqing. It will have a area on 15.4 million square meters with large office and residential area. The city is capable to produce 22% of the energy it consumes from wind and sun. The city itself is designed with shapes as natural mountains, up to 400m tall. If the proposal actually gets approved we might see this city completed withinn 20 years.

Yah, Greenland is looking very big, but South America isn't finished yet. But even when its finished you will see Greenland is nearly as big as SA and Africa. Greenland consist of 26 islands name; Cape Farewell, Arsuk, Narsuasuaq, Tasiilaq, Nuuk, Kapisillit, Jensen Nunatakker, Fredrik, Mont Forel, Attu, Davis, King Christian IX Land, Daneborg, Oscar, King Wilhelm Land, York, Iluissat, Godhavn, Upernavik, Savissivik, Siorapaluk, Peary Land, Danmark Havn, Independence, Nord and Cape Morris. :)

Norway is 6 islands, Oslo, Norway, Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen, Ukraine (!) and Svalbard. Denmark has one island, named Denmark. Sweden and Finland also have one island each named as they are named. No islands for any Baltic countries. And Iceland have a island too.

So we have many islands after Denmark and Norway at least, and i like how they name all islands! :D

Marina Bay
New skyline in Singapore

Singapores new downtown is been developed in one of last larger open areas in the downtown district. Several buildings along Orchard Road around phase one of the development project in Marina Bay is under construction, and the first buildings, One Raffles Quay has just been completed. Here is a little overview of the latest and most attractive project in Marina Bay.

>> Orchard Turn
Orchard Turn looks set to be more than just a mega-mall and high-end residential complex along Singapore's prime shopping street. The developer is promising a striking landmark that will draw in the crowds. Orchard Turn is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and construction was started in 3rd quarter of 2006. The entire tower with shopping mall will be completed in 2010. The tower will be 216m tall with 56 floors.

>> The Sail@Marina Bay
The Norwegian-American award-winning architect Peter Pran is taking Singapore city-living to new heights with The Sail@Marina Bay. The design concept for this mixed use residential tower is a sculpture that is created by the hands of nature - Sun, Wind, and Water. The design exemplifies and defines natural forces with the overall composition created as if it were formed by water passing through the site. The result includes two prominent towers and a sculpted base. A "canyon" is formed separating the base from the tower mass and becomes an important urban space that exposes a lush green environment to inhabit.

The Sail consists of two condominium and retail twin towers on 245m and 215m in Singapore's new downtown. Togather these towers has a capacity of 1111 units. 438 one-bedroom units, 418 two-bedroom units, 175 three-bedroom units, 75 four-bedroom units and 5 penthouses, ranging in size from 592 sq ft to 1,356 sq ft. Construction is expected to be completed in 2009.

>> One Raffles Quay
The first tall high-rise building to be completed in Marina Bay, the 245m tall One Raffles Quay North Tower and the 140m tall One Raffles Quay South Tower, both for office usage. Construction was started in 2002 and was completed the summer of 2006.

Russia Tower

Russia Tower in Moscow will be completed by 2010. The building will be the tallest in Europe, and one of the tallest in the world. Construction is expected to start in January 2007. The Russia Tower was originally proposed as a 648 meter, 125-storey tower. It was designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) (http://www.som.com/). This proposal was redesigned in 2003, now a 648 meter, 134-storey tall tower. Then the Moscow Development Company (ST Group) cancelled this project.

However, in March 2006, the ST Group unveiled a new design. The 600 meter 118-storey building, designed by Foster and Partners (http://www.fosterandpartners.com/). Its construction to cost an estimated at $1.5 billion.

Hmm. There's something in that Russia Tower that I don't like.. not sure what, though. But for sure it'll be really impressive.

And those Dubai towers look very cool! Like burning flames.

Yeah, well both have a pyramid shape, but the size and design is another story.

A comparison, drawnings from SSP Diagrams.

Of course not, as i said in the first post, everybody is allowed to post projects! ;)

Songdo is a cool project, they were planning a supertall on 400m or 500m there some time ago too, but im pretty sure they redesigned it to a lower building.

The tiger ecenomies of the East have really caught up with the western economies now, looking at those projects, they are certianly still growing!
It would be fascinating to compare in the future, if they will compete with the major world economies like EU and NAFTA?!

Fordham Spire redesigned!

Fordham Spire, Chicago has recently been redesigned. The new name of the building which is to become one of the tallest buildings in the world is The Chicago Spire. The spire has been removed, and the roof is now going up to the top of the entire 610m tall structure. The building will have 150 floors.

I don't think it fits in very well with the existing skyline at all.
It would definitely look better in an Asian skyline, or even a European one (with decreased height of course).

Jarmo K
February 4th, 2007, 03:53 PM
^true... but -

since most of chicago's skyline is from 1960's-1980's it's normal that a futuristic skyscraper wouldn't fit in... i think that doesn't mean they should build new skyscrapers in post-modernistic 'box'-style. maybe in the near future they'll add some more futuristic high-rises so that the overall picture would look better.

what i mean to say is - it's hard to make buildings from different eras look good together...

Lake Point Tower isn't futuristic?

The main problem with the renderings is the fact that the photos are all rather old and they don't show many of the new towers already built plus the ones under construction or proposed.

I've been back to have a look at Tour Signal a few times here and then. I guess it's grown on me, I really like it for its feminine curve and the top that seems to go into the infinite through it's own tearing apart. I do not get the the weird square going up almost half the way though.

The latest design is nice, but i also enjoy that old design (exept the top of the tower) better than the very latest design.

I agree that the building would fit better in some futuristic chinese city, it does not mix to well with the Chicago skyline. But with Trump Tower right west of it and with the other recently building projects in Chicago i think this one will be a great achievement in the skyline. Chicago needs more modern buildings to keep up in the world of architecture, so Chicago Spire is a good thing!

Moscow - Expocentre exhibition halls and residential tower

nb! - all text and photos from worldarchitecturenews (http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com).

enjoy!

Yhe complex is designed by Zaha Hadid.

Closely located to the Moscow International Business Center (MIBC), the largest investment and construction project in Russia, and Europe as a whole, the Expocenter Project offers the city a new exposition venue, hotel, and residential development. The main function of the horizontal space is to house the exposition and conference halls. The exposition halls cantilever to the sides at the upper levels, providing for a snow-free outdoor event space; and concealing the traffic at the southern part of the building. Such a venue with 26,340 sqm net exhibition space, which is located in the center of Moscow, will be in high demand for such high-class exhibitions and events. The conference halls, located at the Eastern side of the first floor horizontal space, accommodate 3 auditoriums of different sizes, which can also combine to create one large hall of 1500 seats. The residential tower is designed as an elegant continuation of the Moscow City skyline (first a drop and then a rise), with a large vertical volume divided into two smaller shapes in order to sustain its overall slenderness. This verticality of the urban space swoops to the ground to create a main lobby that serves both as a grand social meeting space, and allows for separate entrances for the residence blocks and the hotel. The hotel rises to the 26th floor of the Western tower, with beautiful views to the Moscow City development. The 2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel complex contain a gym, a spa, and many specialized restaurants, bistro cafes and shops. The residences are located in the Eastern tower and on the top floors of the Western tower.

It's really hard to tell in this picture. But at the other hand, what's the alternative? That amount of metal and chrome would cost a national budget... Guess it's just a bad illustration:nuts: But some of the glass-bends are very complicated and "unconveniant" sort to say... Ok, now I'm talking to myself! But it is a really nice project! Go Moscow!

That Moscow expo center looks magnificent. That is going to be an iconic building. Just have to say that it is the best that i have seen for a while and i love those shapes. It's something new and something that we are never going to see in Finland, even in way smaller scale.

Final design?

Chicago Spire has gone through another redesign, but this might be the final design. So this is Version F, still 610m tall with 150 floors and designed by Santiago Calatrava. There is still planns in attaching a mast on the top of the tower, so we might see a Version G out pretty soon.

Millennium Tower World Business Center
Busan - South Korea

Asymptote Architecture (http://www.asymptote-architecture.com/), the New York based architecture practice led by principals Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture, has been awarded the Millennium Tower World Business Center in Busan, Korea. The international competition was organized by the Busan International Architectural Culture Festival (BIACF) and sponsored by the Municipality of Busan City and the Solomon Group. The official announcement was made on January 25 in Busan after a unanimous decision by jury members selecting Asymptote's groundbreaking design of three separate tapered towers rising out of a robust and powerful base. The Solomon Group, a private Korean developer, intends to move forward with Asymptote's design for a 560m tall tower, which upon completion will be the tallest building in Asia.

Asymptote's design for the WBCB questions older notions of singularity and autonomy in tall building design being a juxtaposition of three distinct forms and the subsequent voids they delineate. This composition takes as its inspiration Busan's dramatic skyline and the spectacular backdrop of sea and mountains that surround it. The base of the tower negotiates both the site and city at the entrance level, transporting people up a sky lobby and garden already situated high above the city. Here three slender towers rise even higher gracefully tapering upwards around a spectacular central void garden. Through its formal and sculptural qualities, the WBCB towers afford a unique architectural expression and symbolic elegance for 21st century Busan and the region.

Asymptote Architecture, an award-winning firm founded in 1989 in New York City, has achieved global recognition for important projects developed for prestigious clients that include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the ORCO Group Paris, the New York Stock Exchange, Aldar Properties Abu Dhabi and the Equine Group in Malaysia. In addition to the WBCB towers project, other projects currently underway by the firm include two office towers in Budapest, a luxury mid-rise residential building in New York, a 50-story luxury residential tower on the Persian Gulf in Abu Dhabi, a master planning project for a 28 hectare mixed-use site in central Prague, a new city center and commercial complex in Penang, Malaysia as well as the new master plan of the downtown district of Monterrey Mexico.

>> Liverpool's Future Tallest
Proposed: King Edward Tower (170m/54 floors)

This is a first look at what will be the tallest building in Liverpool on the site of the King Edward pub near the city's famous waterfront.

Designed by Leach Rhodes Walker for developers Y1 and Richmont Properties, the scheme will stand 170 metres tall making it by far the tallest building in Liverpool, a good hundred feet or more than the currently under construction Beetham West Tower not to mention the first true skyscraper for the city.

Costing a total of £130 million, it will rise to 54 storeys. Accommodation includes 412 one, two and three bedroom apartments including the highest penthouses the country, 2,300 square metres of office space, 700 square metres of retail space and 245 parking spaces.

The 14th floor features a massive skybar and restaurant spread over almost 600 square metres that will be accessed by an exclusive express lift and offer 360 degree views of the whole of Liverpool from within.

Architecturally the main feature of the building is the distinct spiral effect employed by the architects with a series of layered curves revealing different surfaces that celebrates the ecclesiastical grandeur of Liverpool. The brown stone is inspired by the Anglican Cathedral whilst the cornices and vertical lines on the curving glass take their cues from the Catholic Cathedral.

The scheme has had a warm reception so far from planners in Liverpool and with the changing design of it from a twin towered project to a single tower, the developer hopes they can secure planning approval and move quickly into a 36 month long construction programme which can begin on site in mid-2008.

>> Westbridge Hotel Tower
Approved: Westbridge Hotel Tower (117m/39 floors)

Work is set to start soon on this £100million, 39-storey tower beside the River Soar in Leichester, England. Expected to take three-and-a-half years, it will include more than 170 flats as well as a five-star hotel. The tower is designed by Simpson and is situated next two three other towers which is designed by the same man. These are also approved and ready to start construction.

>> La Lumiere
Under Construction: La Lumiere (171m/54 floors > 112m/32 floors)

This is the second phase to the redevelopment of a Royal Mail sorting office in Leeds, England, which has already seen a 65 m tall former Royal Mail office reclad to become apartments called West Central. The construction of Lumiere will comprise of two towers of a height of 54 storeys / 171 m and 32 storeys / 112 m both of which are to be clad in glass with the taller tower to be predominantly blue and the smaller tower to be of a reddish texture.

The developer behind the project is KW Linfoot and the buildings designed by Ian Simpson will comprise of a mixture of apartments, offices, shops, cafes, restaurants and a Winter Garden. The buildings that is due to be complete by 2009.

This pic is from the city of London at the demolition site where the Leadenhall tower is set to rise up. That tower is the tallest of the skyscraper projects in the city, if I am not mistaken.
I thought it was interesting how they strip the core from the bottom upwards.

The square from where this picture was taken will really be packed with tall buildings, Gherkin is there, the new Willis building is there, Leadenhall will be there, a fairly tall black one is there, and I believe the one they call the Pinnacle will be around the block.

Edit: It is actually the Pinnacle which is the tallest proposal for the city.

>> Moscow: Wedding Palace

Wedding Palace is a 250m, 47 story tall tower which is currently under construction for the International Business Center in Moscow, next to Russia Tower and City of Capitals as you can see above. The tower will be completed in 2010 and is designed by RMJM Architects (http://www.rmjm.com/RMJMHillier.html).

> Project concept
The multi-functional complex with the Moscow Wedding Palace and underground parking, located on Plots Nos. 2,3 of MIBC Moscow-City between the pier-pavilion of the trade-and-pedestrian bridge Bagration and the Central Core and boarding on the Aqua-Park and Expocenter act as ‘pedestrian gates’ of the Business Center, linking these different-level projects both among themselves, and to the new underground station by means of the trade-and-pedestrian crossing-passages, and on the new Public Square level to the cinema-concert complex and to the new Moscow Government building. Amphitheatre-stairway formed in this way acts as a transitional element between the pavilion of the Bagration bridge and the Moscow Government building.

Such a complicated town-building context resulting from mixture of view perspectives and town-building axes in the complex of different-scale high-rise buildings, claiming a dominant role, calls the design authors for a definite self-restriction in relation to volumes. The Tower being 48 stories in height, does not try to take part in the ‘who is higher’ competition, but complements harmoniously the composition formed out of different-height volumes, making an elegant frame to the Public Square from the western side, and at the same time making no obstacle to the view perspectives and pedestrian axes, oriented for the Government building, cupola of the cinema-concert complex and the Federation Tower.

Without limiting themselves to the role of background architecture, the project authors have set themselves a task of creating a project, which will become really known and internationally recognizable symbolic building of contemporary Moscow, drawing inspiration in the images derived from the helicoidal cupolas of St. Basil Cathedral (a historically formed symbol of Moscow) and in the sweeping silhouette of Tatlin’s Tower (symbol of Russian avant-garde architecture). The idea of the evolutional helix, which geometry is built on mathematically proven harmony principles and symbolizes in itself progress and drive for the future, has acquired a new sound in the concept of the Wedding Palace Complex.

The helicoidal tower, embodying the idea of ‘architecture like music which came to a standstill’ personifies in itself a union of two origins: in the sculptural composition one can read interlacement of arms, embracement and dance of newly-weds. In the pair of spiral-twisted opposite facades, ‘dissolving’ into the sky above the tower roofing, one (the higher) personifies the image of a ‘bridgeroom’, while the other resembles the silhouette of a ‘finance’ with the wedding dress train trailing up to the gala stairway foundation of the Wedding Palace.

The idea of the Wedding Palace location belongs to the Mayor of Moscow — Mr. Luzhkov. The underlying aspiration of the Mayor is to harmoniously bring together the business atmosphere with the ceremonial and festive: «Life does not end after close of business in the offices». It is due to the Wedding Palace that the present architecture of the Tower and the Palace was born.

> Architectural features of the Project
The concept of the Palace is two-level structure in the space of a huge atrium, which tracery glass covering with backstays, like a train of a bridal veil, unites the tower and the squire in front of the Palace, protecting the entrance group with its canopy and opening a grandiose view over the tower’s sculptural composition through the lace of frameless glazing with ‘spider’-spacers.

Layouts for the future Wedding Palace are being developed at the order of the Head Management for the Moscow City Civil Registry Office, which suggested the organization of two luxury halls for wedding ceremony. The total area of the Wedding Palace will be equal to 2,000 sq m, so it will be the largest Wedding Palace in Moscow. Upon completion of the ceremonial part, the newly-weds will be able to have a wedding breakfast on the very top of the Tower in a luxury restaurant with sweeping panoramic views of oscow from its windows, or in one of the restaurants located in the stylobate part of the complex. The concept of the Tower facade uses double-skin unitized glazing, allowing to provide a three-dimensional geometry of helix.

The Public Square will unite the new building of the Mayor’s Office with the Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment. The amphitheatre stairway formed in this way acts as a transitional element uniting the square around the pavilion of the trade-and-pedestrian bridge Bagration with the esplanade of the new city square, in advance of the entrance to the new building of the Mayor’s Office. These two levels are also connected by means of escalators and travelators along the Eastern border of Plot No. 2. During project development, special attention has been given to landscaping of the Public Squire: there will be here both a apple orchard to end up the romantic marriage ceremony, and a waterfall running down the stairs. The trade-and-pedestrian space under the new Public Square can be accessed from the street on three sides of the complex at level 125.60 m, from which by means of walking through a string of atria threaded on a pedestrian axes of trade malls, one can make it to the Central Core and the Aqua-Park.

The link to the metro station is realized at level 121.00 m and has been put into service since the end of 2005. The main entrance to the Tower vestibule locates on the side of the traffic way along the Central Core at level 130.60 m. The entrance to the future museum of MIBC Moscow-City, which will be located on the area of 2,000 sq m, at level 130.60 m will be located on the side of an esplanade of the public square. The museum is called to highlight all the importance of MIBC for the city of Moscow, provide the information on its creation for all who are interested, to trace the evolution of each plot — from concept to realization. The Museum will also become the place of socially important activities for the City.

All the levels are connected among themselves by means of escalators and panoramic lifts, located in the atria, each of them is decorated in the center with a fountain or a sculptural composition, thus identifying itself for convenience of pedestrians and trade center customers.

the third one is really strange, nice design but it would need some more scrapers right next to it, not that far as seen in the second pic.

I kinda disagree there. The building design is perfect for a tall signal tower in a area without any skyline, or any tall building. It will actually destroy much of the scraper uniquenes and shape if they built some taller buildings, lets say 150m tall to 300m tall close to it. And the area around the tower is amazing, with a large roof uppon the infastructure and facilities suchs as a major shopping center, subway/railroad center etc.

Hoping to hear more about this project very soon, looks very interesting. :)

well, the more I look at the picture, the more I start liking it, I don't know about the surrounding houses, I really wish that they aren't some commies, but the viaduct looking things which finally make the building, look awesome.

I love this thread! Clearly our neighboring country has understood something we don't. Moscow will own with some of these skyscrapers.

But what's up with this? They're encouraging people to fly by twin-towers now?

Twisting mania!

Since the first really great and famous twisting tower was completed in 2003 (Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden!) a twisting towering race has began. Loads of twisting tower around the globe is popping up in loads of different twisting shapes and architecture. Perhaps we Scandinavians, and especially Swedes is having a hard time to say that any of these twisting towers is nearly as good and spectacular as our own TT, but they are still worth a look!

So here goes a few twisting projects up, some short information preview and some renderings!

>> Chicago Spire
Chicago - USA

A twisting tower designed by Santiago Calatrava (also the Turning Torso architect) in Chicago, USA. This 610m tall tower with 150 floors is going to become the new tallest skyscraper in USA, some 168m taller than the current tallest in USA, Sears Tower, also located in Chicago. Groundbreaking occoured on June 25th, 2007 and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008. Chicago Spire is scheduled to be completed in late 2010.

>> Da Vinci Tower
Dubai - UAE

This is one of the most advanced skyscraper projects in history. A 313m tall tower with 68 floors. You have probably heard about rotating restaurants in tall towers, but this goes much further in that development.

The US $330 million (AED1.2 billion) rotating tower is the brainchild of Italian architect and chairman of Rotating Tower Technology International, David Fisher, and is set to become the first prefabricated skyscraper in the world. The concept poses several benefits to developers under time and cost pressures: with 90% of the 68-storey structure built as modules in a factory, actual construction time will be cut to 18 months, as opposed to the average 30 for a building of similar size.

Labour costs will also be reduced, as the project will only need around 90 workers on site, thus mitigating the risk of accidents and costs associated with health and safety. And with 77 wind turbines fixed to the tower, along with solar panels, the project will run off natural energy, as well as produce enough to power five buildings in the vicinity. The only part of the 313m-tall tower that will be built on site using traditional construction techniques is the central core, which will house lifts, emergency staircases and other utilities.

Each floor of the tower will consist of 12 modules that will arrive at the site completely finished, with electrical, plumbing and air conditioning systems ready to use. The modules will then be assembled at the rate of one floor every seven days. The project will be made up of apartments, offices and a hotel, and each floor will rotate 360° while changing shape. A single rotation will take 90 minutes.

Shanghai World Financial Center is on Fire!

A fire has broken out in an office tower under construction in Shanghai, China, sending smoke billowing from the side of the building. The fire was started by sparks from welding work which fell onto flammable material, state media said. The flames burned across several floors but no casualties were reported. The official news agency, Xinhua, cited a report from Shanghai police saying the fire started on the 40th floor in an elevator shaft. The fire shattered windows and sent smoke billowing from the unfinished building until it was extinguished about one hour later.

You can see a goog video showing the building on fire, and where it started on BBC, (click here to watch) (http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/check/player/nol/newsid_6940000/newsid_6946500?redirect=6946583.stm&news=1&nbwm=1&bbwm=1&nbram=1&bbram=1&asb=1).

Lotte World Tower To Become Seoul's Tallest
Published on 2007-07-07: Skyscrapernews.com Article (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=998)

These are the first images of the latest design of what will be one of the tallest buildings in the world, the Lotte Super Tower in Seoul, South Korea, if built.

Designed by leading architects Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the tower will be 555 metres tall tapering gently from a wider base. The shape of the building is also manipulated starting off with a square floor-plate of 70 x 70 metres and gradually morphing into a circular 40 metre one as the height progresses.

Responding to the shrinking floor-plates, the building uses which require the largest areas such as office and retail will be located at the bottom of the tower whilst the upper floors will be set aside for hotel accommodation and a viewing platform. In total it will be 15% retail, 50% office, 30% hotel and 5% for the observation area.

The appearance of the building is dominated by lattice-work that takes on the look of a diagrid, famously used in 30 St Mary Axe in London and less creatively but just as famously in a defining SOM skyscraper, the Hancock Tower in Chicago.

This webbing of metal has one major advantage over the traditional steel-framed buildings of having much stronger structural strength so less metalwork can be used and building costs are saved by the developer.

The diagrid can also be configured by the architect in the design process to adapt to such things as structural loads in a way that a more stricter frame could not. This was seen in action with 30 St Mary Axe which actually shrunk a fraction of an inch when completed as the frame compressed slightly to hold the weight once gravity kicked it and it settled into the site.

Responding to potential strains on the Lotte Super Tower, SOM has designed the structural columns so they are steepest at the bottom to take into account the gravity loads and shallowest at the top to take stresses from the wind in a process called "vortex shedding" that manipulates the wind flow.

At night the superscraper will be particularly stunning. A lighting scheme has been designed where the diagonal cross-bracing that wraps around the tower will be lit up with a series of white lights like a Christmas tree. At the top, beams will shoot up from the crown illuminating the sky above as if the structure finishes in a torch light.

Particular attention has been paid to the base that will have blue uplighters but also a deeper red colour scheme on the interior of the lowest levels, creating a feeling of depth through the facades and cross-bracing as well as expressing the complex structure visually.

The Lotte Group are already a major developer within Korea with a number of large towers on their portfolio but this one will be one of the tallest buildings in the world if it is actually completed. That could however be another story - Korea has a long and illustrious history of proposing enormous towers that fail to get off the ground.

Even if the scheme is never realised it's a far cry from the earliest origins of Lotte, that of a chewing gum and confectionary manufacturer in Japan in 1948, and a victory of sorts that shows the smallest starts can lead to the grandest designs.

There are some amazing and crazy projects out there. Thanks a lot for this compilation, Christian and others, though it also makes me a bit sad that the only thing we get here is another, ugly lowrise....

Of course, most of these projects are far too large for our region, but some scaled-down versions could fit well in some cases.

Good question, but we could use some really impressive skyline with taller skyscrapers, perhaps up to 250m/300m in some of the newly developed business district in some of our Scandinavian cities. And if the architects, developers and city politicians used much money on it we could have develpoed a really impressive Scandinavian skyline!

Because we have loads of good development projects here, but what we're missing in many of these projects is really, really good (spectacular and impressive) architecture such as the head projects presented in this thread!

Gensler Reach For The Stars
Published on 2007-08-22 by Skyscrapernews.com (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=1074)

American architecture firm Gensler, have designed this new half a kilometre tall astronomically inspired concept tower for Doha, capital of Qatar.

Called the Constellation and penned for an unnamed middle-eastern country, the slender scheme is designed primarily as a landmark headquarters for a banking company.

Ground the first several floors that the podium consists of will be given over to entrance areas and retail plus a floating pontoon that could hold exhibitions into Islamic Astronomy. These ground areas will be given a particularly earthy approach with timber and gravel.

The main structure stands above the podium levels and offers 20 floors of office accommodation. As the building narrows and floor-plates become smaller the upper floors will have a private function room, whilst a helipad for VIP access sticks out on one side.

After this point about 150 metres up the building is mostly given over to a narrowing spire with an express elevator tunnelled through it until the 300 metre mark where visitors can emerge onto a viewing platform. Above this the spire continues for a further 200 metres narrowing to a needle point half a kilometre above ground.

The architectural concept is centered around the ideas of Arabian astronomy that pioneered many of the human advances in the field between the 8th and 15th centuries, and which still has its recognised today thanks to the Arabic name some stars in the sky have.

Gensler have combined this with Islamic Geometry to generate a pattern using a star map that identifies key points in the constellation that symbolise the cosmos. These points were then taken and reinterpreted as a single star constellation with lines plotted between them using a 3d computer model with eye corner used to help describe the geometry of the planned building.

These will also help dictate the night-time appearance of the scheme by being lit with powerful LED lights with lesser lights forming links in-between that will create an earthly sculpture of outer space.

Furthermore the shape of the building, effectively a spire, has been conceived by the architects to reach upwards towards the heavens joining earth to sky with the pinnacle 500 metres above ground level serving as a new star for the surrounding city.

Atkins To Turn Abandoned Quarry Into Hotel
Published on 2007-07-27 in Skyscrapernews.com (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=1030)

Imagine a flooded opencast quarry near a bustling city. It's not normally the sort of place you'd expect for a luxury hotel but British design firm Atkins have come up with a solution for what is one of the largest holes in the ground in China reaching almost 100 metres deep.

Called the Hanging Gardens Hotel, the project is designed around the concept of water, both real and imagined which takes an existing water feature and adds the sculptural representation of a moving one to it enlivening what was previously dead.

Occupying a sheer cliff side in the Songjiang quarry close to Shanghai, the hotel resort curves concavely around the rock-faces rising to 19 floors of luxury accommodation above the water-line.

There is also set to be two levels of accommodation below the waterline with rooms having Perspex glass that will give them clear views underwater, something more befitting the lair of a James Bond baddie.

The two main hotel blocks are separated by a glass atrium that cuts through them as if it is a flowing waterfall whilst the top level is linked to a pod more like an Ewok's hut that is cantilevered right out over the cliff and above the water and will offer pursuits such as bungee jumping for those who don't mind getting the tip of their nose wet.

Other leisure options on offer will include the obvious rock climbing opportunity, boating, a covered swimming pool with the cliff-side still included and walkways suspended above the water for a nice moon-lit stroll.

Guests will be accommodated in the 400 hotel rooms and there will be the usual corporate hospitality of conference areas for up to a thousand people, a banqueting centre and numerous restaurants for diners who like a view with a difference.

The entire scheme is aimed at being environmentally friendly with photovoltaic panels on the roof and a heat pump with energy extractor in the water. Even the atrium has been planned to help energy efficiency by not only being a conservatory with large amounts of vegetation but also working as circulation passage for air heated by the sun.

What the Hanging Gardens Hotel offers more than anything isn't luxury accommodation for guests with massive bank accounts but the hope that these industrial scars we have cut deep in the earth into can be transformed into something a bit more worthwhile than watery holes polluted with heavy metals.

A short Burj Dubai update!

Burj Dubai is now estimated to be 574.50m tall with 154 floors, it will reach the 155th floor (579.30m) in a couple of days. The construction will now probably slow down a bit to bring the rest of the tower walls up to this height. The tower is closing KVLY-TV mast's height on 628.80m as the world tallest man-built structure.

The 154th floor will be the tallest office floor in Burj Dubai, the last floors up to the 162th floor (624.10m) will be mechanical floors. The main roof will top out on 700.90m. This is where the spire starts, going up to 758.50m, where the pinnacle continues up to 818.00m (as the tallest point of Burj Dubai) if these estimates are true.

Almost too bad you, as a tourist won't be allowed higher than the observatory on the 124th floor, at 442.10m! But i guess you are more than satisfied enought if you are suffering from fear of heights!

"but again - i cannot find anything!": Thats my problem as well! ;)

I usually try to post as much information as i can in here, but Chinese projects is a difficult one (thats why i made just a simple photo thread, just to admire the architecture, as many of the projects are probably proposals in one competition and so on), usually i don't find any more information that a rendering. But i have a few of information of what you ask. :)

1. the guotai opera house - I don't really have any information about it sadly, but i can comfirm its under construction, or about to start construction. Ground was broken this summer, here is a few pictures taken in August this year:

2: Yes thats a great tower, great they actually seem to build it as it didn't get build in NYC (Foster's World Trade Center design). All i know as of now is that its a 45 story tall building, the Chongqing Nanbin CITIC Plaza. Its proposed next to Sheraton Twin Towers (218m) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v188/cityx/Other/MariottHotelposter1.jpg). A larger rendering can be found here (http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r5/z0rgg/chongqingnanbinciticplaza.jpg). Aqua

Chicago (USA) is building several tall high-rise buildings nowadays such as the Chicago Spire (610m), Trump Tower (415m) and Waterview Tower (319m). Aqua is another tall Chicago high-rise building which is currently under construction. The tower will be 251m with 82 floors. Construction was started in early 2007 and is expected to be completed by 2009.

The facade will be composed of undulating balconies which change slightly from floor to floor, forming a rippling, curtain-like surface. Balcony depths are calculated to optimize views beyond the building perimeter, and also to optimize sun shading within units according to where it is most needed. The name 'Aqua' fits the nautical theme of buildings in Lakeshore East, and is derived from the wave-like forms of the balconies. The name also matches the blue-green tint of the windows. Balconies will extend as much as 12 feet from the tower's perimeter, and are concentrated outside of living rooms so that bedroom windows have more open views. During construction the formwork for the curving edges will be guided by a global positioning system.

Eco-City in Hong Kong

>> An Urban Jungle for Hong Kong

The urban mesh of the Central Business District in Hong Kong is surrounded by the green hills visible from the Victoria Peak in the South and by the sinuous bank of the Pearl River. On the horizontal stratum compressed along the curves of the levels of the precipitous relief, the city structured itself vertically through a field of more or less frayed towers of glass and steel. Hong Kong is one of the more populated territorry in the world with a density of 30 000 inhabitants/km².

To answer to this overpopulation, the project "Urban Jungle" proposes to re-tame the nature and to widen the territory of the ultra-contemporary city. In the heart of the South China Sea, this "perfumed harbour" will abound in an urban jungle by the renaturalisation of the urban landcape and its extension on Central Waterfront. In the framework of the long lasting development, the goal is thus to increase the real estate availability by setting up an ecologically positive strong print. This means so that the new built spaces are auto-sufficient and produce more energies and biodiversity that they consume!

The Pentominium
Pentominium, located in Dubai Marina, will potentially be the tallest residential tower in the world. This tower had a
unique challenge, in that it had to respond to two different conditions on the site: the density/proximity of the neighbors
and the extreme environment pressures of Dubai. Therefore, the building has two different sides that center around a shared
core. One side is a simple extrusion that reaches the full height of the building. This side is primarily southern-oriented
and utilizes a system of balconies and a vertical layer of glass to mitigate solar gain. As the building rises this layer of glass
becomes wider and functions as a wind break to help protect the balcony from the higher-velocity winds as one gets to the
extreme heights of the tower. The other side of the building is a staggered shape, alternating between apartments and voids
of sky-gardens. This is achieved through the introduction of six five-storey-high pods that cling structurally to the core. This
alternation allows for either communal or semi-private spaces and thus enables the tower to “breathe” within its dense context.

The result is a very thin, lightweight 516-meter tower that lightly sits into its setting of extruded neighbors and powerfully
maintains its presence in its context and climate. Andrew Bromberg of Aedas is the Lead designer of the project.

Kingkey Finance Center Plaza
Won in an international competition featuring some of the world’s best known architects, London based Terry Farrell and
Partners have been commissioned to design the 439m tall Kingkey Finance Tower. Scheduled to begin construction
late 2007, it will be Shenzhen's tallest tower as well as one of the world’s tallest mixed use buildings when completed
in 2010.

The 97 storey tower comprising over 210,000m2 of accommodation, is part of their master plan design for a 2-phase,
355,000m2 mixed use development. There are two floors of basement retail connecting directly to a new metro station;
5,500 m2 of banking trading halls slated for two prestige banks; 167,000m2 of Grade A office space over 68 floors; and,
30,000 m2 over 22 floors of “6 Star” business hotel complete with state-of-the-art conference and business facilities.
A variety of fine dining options are contained within the crowning sky garden feature on the top 4 floors. Rational and
efficient planning principles combined with the gently curved profile result in a desirable variety in the plan form at each
floor.

Situated on Hong Kong's doorstep with a population of over 6 million Shenzhen is perhaps the fastest growing city in the
world and China's biggest port. Located in the city's prime district of Luohu, the tower’s position and orientation will give
panoramic views over all of Shenzhen as well as views to Hong Kong. The tower's fluid, elegant shape and reflective skin is
an allusion to a fountain that connotes the wealth and prosperity springing forth from the economic success zone that is
Shenzhen.

Park Hyatt Tower (aka India Tower)
Construction has started on India Tower, a new 60-storey (301 meters) world-class Park Hyatt hotel, retail, and
residential tower located in South Mumbai, India. The developer is committed to making India Tower a United States Green
Building Council (USGBC) LEED Gold-rated project. Construction is expected to be completed in 2010.

India Tower is located in the prestigious South Mumbai coastal area fondly referred to as the Queens Necklace. The
tower’s rotated form emerges in response to the 3-acre site (1.2-hectares), the building’s functional requirements, and its
mixed-use program that changes with each rotation of the tower. This circulation pattern separates retail, a custom-
designed residential-style Park Hyatt hotel and serviced apartments, and long-lease and duplex penthouse condominium
apartments.

The design concept for India Tower was informed by Mumbai’s climate, the site, and the desire to create distinctive
indoor and outdoor spaces with optimum views, inspirational settings, and personalized contemporary accommodations
for all users. Designed to have the least possible impact on the environment, the tower will integrate current innovative
sustainable systems and technologies throughout the building – solar shading, natural ventilation, daylighting,
rainwater harvesting, and green interior finishes and materials – to make it one of the greenest skyscrapers in India.
India Tower’s 3-story podium will include restaurants and cafés, luxury-brand retail stores, a health/fitness club with a
swimming pool, and a nightclub/lounge.

When arriving at India Tower, Park Hyatt guests will be directed to the Sky Lobby (levels 30-35) to check-in, then
descend to levels 14 through 28 to their hotel residences. India Tower’s long-lease apartments will be located on levels 38
through 50, and will feature stylish and spacious two-story living spaces that have been specially designed to take full
advantage of the expansive views from this height. Levels 52 to 59 of the tower will house one-of-a-kind duplex
penthouse condominium apartments with unparalleled panoramic views.

Penang Global City Center
Asymptote’s design for the PGCC complex is centered on the idea of creating a new and powerful image for the city of
Penang and the new initatives associated with the development of the Northern Corridor of Malaysia. The design
achieves its elegance and stature through the simultaneous embrace of natural landscapes and contemporary urbanism.

The PGCC will become a vital new precinct that complements and enhances the unique characteristics that typify Penang
as a remarkable island metropolis. The design of the iconic towers in particular draws inspiration from not only the
lushness and drama of the surrounding mountains and seascapes, but also from the rich and diverse cultural heritage
that makes up the Malaysian nation and Penang in particular. The forms of the two towers are comprised of both horizontal
and vertical elements: sculpted horizontal components move across the plinth, rise up and transform into articulated
vertical structures. Set against the backdrop of the nature reserve of Penang Hill, the twisting, glass façades of
the towers “perform” various surface effects—reflecting, refracting and distorting views of Penang, the surrounding
landscape and the seascape beyond. The vast, cascading plinth, which functions as a public plaza with multiple
gathering spaces, are venues for the performing arts center, convention center and various facilities for residential,
office and urban life.

Khanty Mansiysk Tower
Rising above the skyline of Khanty Mansiysk in Siberia, this mixed use tower will be a new landmark, providing crucial
amenities for the city, sheltered from the harsh local climate. The concept is driven by a progressive environmental
strategy that is expected to establish new benchmarks for the region. Set high on a hill in a densely wooded area, the
tower rises above two podium buildings each facetted like a cut diamond, reflecting and refracting natural light to
illuminate the interior. At the summit, a viewing platform and restaurant offer panoramic views over the city.

The development will take advantage of a number of sustainable energy strategies and key to the energy performance
of the building are its atria, designed to facilitate solar gain and to encourage daylight to permeate the complex.
A sensitive insertion into the landscape, the design ensures that much of the site remains in its natural condition.

Thanks for all the replies!

And i totally agree with you Mr. D!

Another beauty in Dubai, the Emaar Towers
The Emaar Towers stand at the gateway into the Burj Dubai development. The importance of the site is
accentuated even more by being located immediately across the street from the future tallest tower in the world -
Burj Dubai Tower. The design strives to fit appropriately into this development as a respectful icon to
the community.

The relationship of the forms and their articulation derive from both its contextual response and as a symbol
representing modern Islamic architecture set appropriately within the most modern Islamic city in the world - Dubai.
Both towers, as figures, focus toward the main entry to greet the visitors. As one continues into the site the towers
rotate their orientation as a gesture of respect to its towering neighbor across the street.

The two towers of 42 and 34 floors contain grade A+ office space, looking out to take advantage of the views toward
and around the Burj Dubai. The towers are clothed with an articulated skin recalling the veils and layers of traditional
Islamic architecture. As the figures rise, they bend inwards forming two deep shadowed arches up to the sky and beyond -
toward the top of the Burj Dubai.

True, i did read an article a few years ago about how long it would take before we run out of some important needs for construction such as steel, alliminium etc. can't remember exactly how long, but with todays consumption and the planned ones in the future we might get in trouble some 50 years from now.

By the way, here is the final design of the new Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona. Foster + Partners is giving it a fantastic faceleft if you haven't seen it already.

Camp Nou Stadium
FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium, one of the world’s greatest football venues, is to be extensively remodelled.
Following an international competition, Foster + Partners have been selected as the architects for this renewal of the
stadium, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The stadium, already the largest in Europe, will be enlarged to accommodate over 106,000 fans, together with extensive
new facilities including hospitality and public areas. A new roof will also be created to shelter the fans. The stadium will
be enclosed by a brightly coloured mosaic outer skin that wraps around the building and continues over a new roof. The
multi-coloured enclosure comprises overlapping translucent tiles in the club colours. The myriad of tiles can be seen as
symbolising the loyalty and devotion of FC Barcelona’s fans worldwide.

The remodelled stadium retains the essential elements of the original Camp Nou, designed by architects Francesc
Mitjans-Miró, García Barbon and Soteras Mauri, which was inaugurated in 1957.

On match nights, the stadium will glow, providing a new architectural icon for the city. In the same way that
FC Barcelona is ‘more than a club’, the new Camp Nou will be much more than a stadium.

Yeah, loads of cool projects to post here! Here is another one!

The New Mexico Spaceport Authority Building
The Foster + Partners and URS team has won an international competition to build the first private spaceport in the
world - The New Mexico Spaceport Authority Building. The sinuous shape of the building in the landscape and its
interior spaces seek to capture the drama and mystery of space flight itself, articulating the thrill of space travel for
the first space tourists. Making a minimal impact on the environment, the scheme will be the first facility of its kind
and a model for the future.

The Spaceport lies low within the desert-like landscape of the site in New Mexico. The astronauts’ areas and visitor
spaces are fully integrated with the rest of the building to convey the thrill of space travel. The more sensitive zones -
such as the control room - are visible, but have limited access. Visitors and astronauts enter the building via a deep
channel cut into the landscape. The retaining walls form an exhibition space that documents the history of the region
and its settlers, alongside a history of space exploration. The strong linear axis continues on a galleried level to the
‘superhangar’ - which houses the spacecraft and the simulation room – through to the terminal building.

Designed to have minimal embodied carbon and few additional energy requirements, the scheme has been
designed to achieve the prestigious LEED Platinum accreditation. The low-lying form is dug into the landscape to
exploit the thermal mass, which buffers the building from the extremes of the New Mexico climate as well as catching
the westerly winds for ventilation. Natural light enters via skylights, with a glazed façade reserved for the terminal
building, establishing a platform for the coveted views onto the runway.

Welcome to the future where you don't need to do years of experience before going into space, thats space tourism! Well you need a few weeks of training and health tests and so on, and you need a heck of a lot of money! But in the future they hope that space travalling will be easy a big business!

Ill try to slow it down a little to make some place for comments! But im really not getting shorter on extremly amazing projects worth to be posted here thats for sure!

Here is a famous one that anyone knows of, its soon completed, it needs a place in this thread and its Huge!

Beijing Airport, Terminal 3
When Beijing's new airport terminal opens in February 2008 it will be about twice the size and half the cost and will be
planned and built in almost a third of the time. This project will be the Chinese capital's new gateway to the
skies after a three and a half year timespan to construct the world's biggest airport complex for next year's Olympics.

Covering 986 000 square metres of floor space, Terminal 3 of Capital Airport is bigger than all five Heathrow
terminals put together. With 66 million passengers forecasted to pass through next year, it will go from ninth to
third busiest airport. The main building is similar to Lord Foster's other airports, but even more spectacular. The
three buildings of Terminal 3 are home to 445 lifts, 1,800 miles of cables and a car park for 7,000 vehicles. There is a road
network and a light railway under construction which ends at a terminus shaped like a giant glass turtle. At its peak
the workforce numbered 50,000. Building work started on August 7 2004 and is expected to be finished by the end of this
year. The public consultation alone on Heathrow's Terminal 5 took longer.

Beach Road
Foster + Partners have won an international competition to design a highly sustainable mixed use scheme for Beach
Road in Singapore. Occupying an entire city block between the Marina Center and the Civic District, the scheme
will create a 150,000 square meter eco-quarter in downtown Singapore that continues the Singaporean ideal of the
‘city in a garden’ with its lush planting and sky gardens.

A generous canopy protects the public realm at ground level, buffering the spaces beneath from the extremes of the
tropical climate. Above the canopy rises a vertical city of clustered towers. The scheme incorporates commercial,
residential, retail and two high end hotels, as well as a direct ‘green’ link to an MRT station. Offering a light and
comfortable environment, Beach Road will provide an exemplar sustainable quarter for Singapore.

The design has the potential to achieve the Green Mark Platinum Rating. The canopy is articulated by ribbon-forms that
flex above the primary circulation routes and public spaces and dip near the edges - reflecting the changes of use beneath
it. The ribbons rise up the exposed east and west elevations of the towers where they form a series of vertical louvres.
These filter the sun and provide a framework for the planting which will transform the towers into a series of vertically
linked green spaces. The buildings’ forms and slanted facades are oriented to catch the prevailing winds and direct air flow
down to cool the ground level spaces. To lock the project into its context four existing structures are conserved and
opened to the city as public buildings. The primary axis of the scheme is a new street which is crossed at key points
to encourage circulation through shops and cafés. The scheme will provide a new civic destination for Singapore.
