So this year and again 2008 and 2009 are the highlists of the highway construction. in 2009 impressive number of more than 100 km of new opened sections :cheers:
And, also the expressway between Zilina and Ostrava seem to be more and more realistic. On www.dialnice.info is an article,where Czech Ministry of Transport expressed the will to plan and construct expressway /Jablunkov bypass is already U/C,but I am not sure, whether it´s expressway/ :)

Everything depends on money so we will see... :)
Expressway between Žilina and Ostrava is definitly needed. There is already heavy traffic, mainly freight, and after Kia factory in Žilina and Hyundai in Nošovice will be built, then it will even increased.
Now something more current in the west of the country:
The following 23,4km long part of D8 motorway [Prague - Ústí nad Labem - CZ/D border - (Dresden)] from the city of Ústí nad Labem to Czech/German border (Km 69,3 – 92,7) will be opened this year in December. German A17 from CZ/D border via Pirna to Dresden will be opened at the same time.

Yes, I've read it yesterday in newspaper Pravda, here is link:

Yes, just for the information to the others - little off topic: Pravda is now owned by British newspaper company. ;)
And I am also curious, what will be the priority besides ongoing construction, whether complete 3x3 additional one lane construction of D1 Praha-Brno, or the new construction of R35 expressway.

I cannot see any connection between new owner of Pravda and highway between Žilina and Ostrava. It is very offtopic.

Pravda newspaper sources have been not very reliable before - because of the past. My purpose was just to underline the reliability of the information you provided a link to. Well, as these information are really off topic, I suggest to turn back to the thread topic - Czech highways.

I don't know if there's any value of this post :D but still... I think it's a pity to see how few 'cool' roads there are in Czech Republic if you look at many maps, especially those with a scale of let's say 1:3,000,000 (like maps of Europe), considering that especially in CZ the (at least) 4-lane expressways (rychlostní silnice) are almost as good as the motorways (dálnice), even with the same speed limit (130 km/h) and hard shoulders, if I'm right.

Sorry Verso, I've somehow missed point of your post. Would you write it "in words of one syllabe" I could grasp it? :)
Verso
September 10th, 2006, 07:51 PM
^ You usually see (4-lane) expressways shown on maps just as ordinary 2-lane roads, but in fact (especially in CZ) they are almost as good as motorways.
kokpit
September 10th, 2006, 08:07 PM
Usually? I don't know, where? IMO expressways are marked as thin motorways usually. True is that there are only little differences between Motorway and Expressway.
Verso
September 10th, 2006, 08:24 PM
^ Yes, in greater scale (or in smaller? :D ), but on maps of the entire Europe not really. Or for example, here u don't know untill u come very close (like looking just at Brno for example) - www.uk.map24.com or on the Freytag&Berndt's map of Europe...
kokpit
September 10th, 2006, 08:58 PM
I must admit you are right. That's problem of the map (or creator of the map), it doesn't offer exact information to its users. But what is important for us here in Czechia is we know that these expressways exist, they are marked on our maps and we can drive our cars on them :D
Verso
September 10th, 2006, 11:39 PM
^ :D
Yeah well, I just think CZ is sth special about it, b/c the speed limit is the same as on motorways, there are hard shoulders, if I'm correct, and u've got many more of them than other countries. But yeah, as I've already written in the 9th post, I don't know if this discussion has any value, so... :D

I have a few questions, because i haven't been to the Czech Republic for a few years.
Is the section Usti - Lovosice now the only missing link in the D8?
What is exactly the difference between a Dalnice (D) and an Expressway (R)? i didn't saw much difference between them. Is it only toll?
Will there be a motorway from Brno via Ostrava or so to Northern Slovakia?
Is the D5 now connected with the German A93 motorway near Pfreimd?

D8 => yes there are only 16km gap, I advice you to follow signs for Prague, gap is filled with quite nice road along the Labe valley
D5 => completly done from Prague to german A93
Now we have highway from Brno to Lipnik, in future (2013) wil be completed way to slovakia.
What is exactly the difference between a Dalnice (D) and an Expressway (R)? i didn't saw much difference between them. Is it only toll?
Both are tolled, they have same speed limit (130km/h). Only difference is that R-class roads are little bit narrower (D = 26,5m - R = 22,5-26,5m). But that is also relative for example Prague baypass have 3lines in each direction so it is better than most west european highways and it is still marked as R - expressway.

Kapsch collects Kc810,000 in toll on 1st day, expects Kc10m today
http://www.estav.cz/gfx/we/zpr/mytne2.jpg
Prague- Hauliers paid Kc810,000 for the use of Czech motorways and primary roads during the first 24 hours of operation of the electronic toll system which however was a national holiday, Kapsch TrafficCom board member Erwin Toplak told a press conference today.
Today, almost Kc7m was collected in toll before 2:00 p.m., and the estimate for the whole day approaches Kc10m. The efficiency of the system is 99.25 percent.
As of today, 72,000 on-board units have been distributed to hauliers, while the Transport Ministry forecast the total number at 80,000 units. Toplak said the figure would be exceeded very soon and the ministry would have to order more units from Kapsch.
The distribution of on-board units was without any problems in some parts of the country, but accompanied by difficulties in other localities today.
Lorries and buses weighing 12 tonnes and more have to pay toll on 970 kilometres of Czech motorways and primary roads from January 1. The system was built by Austrian company Kapsch.
Toplak said today that the construction of the system in the first stage cost some Kc2.5bn. The entire order in both stages including services and VAT is worth Kc22bn.

I think R (expressways) are allowed to be a bit steeper and have lesser radius of corners than D (motorways). And traffic lanes are a bit narrower IMO.

I'll stick here this map of traffic intensity (in thousands vehicles per day) on Czech main roads in 2005, there's quite significant increase compared to 2000.
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/2046/intenzity2005fh2.jpg
for example:
roads near Prague
Motorways 2000 -> 2005
D1: 72 -> 94
D5: 30 -> 46
D8: 20 -> 32
D11: 20 -> 32
Expresways
R4: 22 -> 26
R7: 22 -> 32
R10: 22 -> 36
roads near Brno
D1 (to Prague): 32 -> 52
D1 (to Ostrava): 34 -> 46
D2: 16 -> 22
R52: 12 -> 20
R43: 30 -> 42
near Ostrava it's almost twice as much as in 2000 in several places

To je pochopitelně otázka... :)
je to dokonce víc jak 100 km
konkrétně by to mělo být takto,
Dálnice:
D1 0135 Kroměříž- východ - Říkovice 11,5
D3 0305/II Voračice - Mezno 2,0
D8 0805 Lovosice - Řehlovice 16,4
D47 4705 Bělotín - Hl.Životice 18,1
D47 4706 Hl.Životice - Bílovec 11,7
D47 4709/2 Bohumín - st. hranice ČR/Polsko 6,1
Celkem zahájení výstavby dálnic 65,8 km
Rychlostní silnice:
R6 Jenišov - Nové Sedlo 4,4
R6 Sokolov - Tisová 6,0
R7 Sulec obchvat 3,5
R7 MÚK Bítozeves - MÚK Vysočany 5,4
R7 Vysočany MÚK 1,9
R48 Rychaltice - Frýdek-Místek 7,1
R49 4901 Hulín - Fryšták 18,0
R56 Prodloužená Místecká I.st. 3,2
R56 Prodloužená Místecká II.st. 1,2
Celkem zahájení výstavby rychlostních silnic 50,7 km
Má to různé háčky, třeba určitě zahájení výstavby nic neříká o tempu výstavby.

Následuje most přes ulici Slovenská. Prochází Přívozem a železniční trať Ostrava - Bohumín přemosťuje u ulice Na Náspu. Následuje mimoúrovňová křižovatka s ulicí Mariánskohorská (silnice I/58). Stavba bude uvedena do provozu v červenci 2009.

I have a question...When I was In the country(in Prague,to be exact) for a weekend, the on and off-ramps on the highways(especially between Prague and Brno) seemed very short to me(in hungary,we have 500m). What is the lenght of them? Oh,and 1 more... In the hilly areas(so the whole way), the 3rd lanes,that supposed to be occupied with trucks, they ended, like 10 metres, before the on-ramp. Once, I was almost crushed by a truck! Is that "normal" on the newer sections too? ( I mean the sudden lane-disappearance.)

Just ignoring for a moment the crazy fool, I'm surprised in the rush hour video not many Czech motorists keeping to the right on the motorway unless overtaking. It looks like an Australian motorway with cars all over the lanes! In UK and Germany I know people are fanatical about lane discipline and keep to the right (or the left in UK and Australia since we drive on the left) so that faster drivers can go past. Are Czechs not so disciplined? It sort of wastes the design of the road if you can't go past slower cars.

Great-looking motorways! Only one problem, I went on a trip to Prague earlier this year and driving on the motorway from Prague to Brno I noticed there was quite a long section with bumpy cement.. Is it gonna be replaced with asphalt in the future? Cuz in a bus you can sure feel those bumps!

I think the cars in inner (left) lines were already driving quite fast maybe 130 or some of them up to 160 km/h. In the very right lane are cars which ussualy drive about 100 km/h. So if you want to drive about 130 km/h what is maximal allowed speed you have to drive in inner lines.

Some Czech Expressways (R) will be re-marked to Motorways (D) in some time, for example Prague Outer Ring (today R1) will become D0.

Nemajú rýchlostné cesty a diaľnice trochu iné parametre? To stačí len zmeniť značenie?

Some have, some don't.
R1 (Prague orbital expressway), R35 (Olomouc bypass and adjacent eastern section), R52 and R56 have been built in the same standard as motorways.
However most other expressways are 2m narrower.
But the point is that it's still enough to be considered a motorway in most other european countries. The aforementioned narrower standard of most czech expressways is for instance still superior to the planned standard of the slovak D3 motorway.
And while both motorways and expressways are tolled, have the same speed limit and similar if not the same construction standard, it's more than logical to thing about merging the two and to draw a bit more simple and straightforward system of the road classification.
---
To get a clearer picture of the thing, here's an excerpt from the current czech highway codes:
Motorway:
Traffic lanes: 3,75 m
Emergency lanes (outer hard shoulders): 3,25 m
Inner hard shoulders: 0,75 m
Central reserve (the green median): 3,5 m
Max gradient: 4,5 %
Speed limit: 130 km/h
Expressway (if not as above^, so at least):
Traffic lanes: 3,75 m
Emergency lanes (outer hard shoulders): 2,75 m
Inner hard shoulders: 0,50 m
Central reserve (the green median): 3,0 m
Max gradient: 5,0 %
Speed limit: 130 km/h
Older standards allowed narrower emergency lanes (2,75/2,25 m on motorways/expressways respectively). A few expressways also have slightly narrower traffic lanes (3,5 m).

^^So they are motorways only they are named expressways. Now will the name fit.
BTW, are there any international highway standards or something like that?
D3 is specific case. I still don't know why it's not expressway. For example R1 in much easier terrain is expressway and D3 which is almost completely in mountains and in narrow valey of river Kysuca is motorway. Also e.g. planned expressway R7 in absoulutely flat Danube lowlands could be motorway the same problem is with the planned bypass of Košice and south part of R4.

So they are motorways only they are named expressways. Now will the name fit.
That's only if they choose the more conservative version that has been posted by kokpit.
But there is also a more generous proposal (http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/prilohy/erka_a_ceskedalnice.pdf) to promote almost all czech expressways to motorways (and consequently to promote some of expressway-like dual carriageways to expressways). The reasoning being like I wrote in my previous post: way too marginal difference.

Interresting, this some kind of shallow tunnel. There will be similar tunnel or two on D4 highway which will also cross presnet and future runway of Bratislava airport. Nice to see works in progress, Prague really needs bypass.

"Renamed" does not equal "connected" (to the rest of D1). Former D47 will be completed before it will be directly connected to the rest of D1 (however it will be connected via R35 and R46) and all the opened sections will bear assignation "D1" from the very beginning.
First "D47" section of D1 is due to open this november (17+km), the remainder next year and in 2009.
The remaining section of D1 around Prerov linking the two disconnected sections of the motorway is due to open as late as 2013, the road there has quite a little priority as it can be easily bypassed using R46 and R35 expressways.

Photos of the D2, D1 motorways, the Praha bypass and the Main road 6 (expressway?) in the Czech Republic from Sunday when my family and I were heading towards Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Still can't drive, but I could still compare the highway systems of the CE nations. My opinion is that by judging Hungarion M1, M15, Slovakian D2, Czech D1 and Main road(could be expressway) 6, our system is the best in surface quality and condition. Naturally the sections around Bratislava and Praha is very good, but the others...
Hmm... I have special feelings now, after returning from Czech Republic... The country itself is beautiful, and earlier I thought the same of the roads. As I saw from the photos the Czech forumers posted of the Czech Motorway system the northest CE member does a hell of a job extending its motorway system, and this is absolutely true! But what about the modernizing, refurbishment and taking care of the existing ones? For me, the Czech Republic always was the leading one, the one to be followed. Perhaps this is why I feel a bit disappointed...
Strongly in my opinion the quality of the surface of parts of the czech motorway system - except the bypass roads of Brno and Praha and a 50 km section before Praha on the D1 - is around average... :ohno: Not to mention the expressway section of Main road 6 from Praha till Karlovy Vary is below average... Ok. Around the airport the road towards Karlovy Vary is u/c.
My problem was the old concrete surface of the D1 which was like our M7 before the recontruction in 2002. Its from concrete elements, which could be well put together like at the new section of our M0, but its not like that. You can see huge gaps at some places... The asphalt corrections look very ugly on the "white" concrete, and its not well done eather. Its just not the same level... :ohno:
Unfortunately these problems dont really apear on the photos...

This is terrible. It should be exressway but its pretty old and without good administration. Hope it will be better in few years.
And one more comment to the quality, Qtya. You're right that the route you have chosen, looks much worse than in Hungary, but you've been travelling through the oldest motorways in the CR. D1 is expecting a huge reconstruction in next few years and till 2020 it should completly rebuilt to 3+3 profile. After that it all should be better. Nowadays, taking the D1 esp. Friday afternoon, is thriling all the way from Prague to Brno, don't try if you don't need to...
At least, if you want to see fine motorways in CR, try D11 or D8, and also D5 (km 67-150) and R10. These are quite adorable and I always enjoy it, it's the example how should all D and R look like.

The highway/expressway system of CZ is not completed yet and also the budget is limited. Therefore The Road and Motorway Directorate have set up a list of priorities for coming years. They've decided to finish ongoing construction works first (D8 to Dresden, D11 to HK, D1 to Ostrava - here still over 70 km to finish and the construction is ongoing nearly on the whole length, D3 to CJ...). Then, after the network is complete, we can widen the D1 to 3x3 profile and renew its surface completely.
Here you can see whats done already (full lines) and what must be done in coming years (dotted lines).

Regarding the bridge, it is a very interesting and unique construction in this region. As for example these suspension parts contain 136 km of steel-wire ropes. For those who understand czech, i could recommend a few links:

Hi guys!!
How about final stretch of D47 from Bohumin to polish border? Did they start construction? Poland just signed contract with building company for construction of boder section (around 18 km) of our A1 motorway which connects with your D47.
Who builds bridge across Olza river? Poland or Czech Republic?
How many lanes D47 is going to have? 2 or 3?

D47 is 2x2 profile exc. the part from Lipnik to Belotin (15,4 km) that is going to be 2x3 due to higher traffic is expected.
As far as I know the border section construction haven't been started yet on both sides. All preparation stages should be completed including the land buy up on the Czech side. But I might be wrong.
No idea about the bridge...

Are you sure with 3x3 (=9) lanes? ;)
Regarding Bohumín to CZ/PL border section (6.1km), according to this page (http://www.dalnice-silnice.cz/D47.htm), realisation is planned between December 2007 and November 2009

Bridge over Olza River will be built by "Czech money", because it's in Czech Rep already, see the map http://www.mapy.cz/#x=142213888@y=135581184@z=12@mm=ZP@sa=s@st=s@ssq=ostrava@sss=1@ssp=124933029_127403905_146166693_145606529

Kokpit already wrote almost all the facts :) And to complete it:
The final part will be built as D 27,5 category (2+2 driving lanes 3,75 m wide and emergency lanes 3,00 m wide). So no reserve for the third lane as the polish part Sosnica - Belk.
Construction according to actual plans should be started March 2008 and finished December 2009.

Yes, those factories will closely cooperate. For example engines for both factories are being made in Teplička nad Váhom and gearboxes will be made in Nošovice. All supliers of Slovak Kia will be suppliers for Czech Hyundai as well so the traffic will be heavy there.
In Slovakia there is highway D3 from Hričovské Podhradie near Žilina to border crossing Skalité/Zwardon and short expressway R5 connection betwen that highway and Czech border.

It's temporary. The last section of Olomouc By-pass is still going to be built. There were problems with Křelov municipality.
The dangerous place you see is in the place of future expressway exit, and it wasn't useful to build the whole exit now, so this solution was chosen.
On the other hand, it still has four lanes and that's the important thing...

I hope they going to use trains to transport thousands of engines and gearboxes up and down the mountains. Roads there are just half profile expressway between Czechia and Slovakia.
Otherwise it means hundreds of extra trucks on roads.

No, they are going to use trucks. One way they will transport engines and when returning they will carry gearboxes. Such factories need constant flow of supplies. They have plans with exact minutes when the parts must arrive. Trains are not flexible enough. By trains are ussualy transported only complete cars or supplies which are being transported not so often. We can expect massive growth of traffic on this route. However, it's true it's being build in half profile, so officially it's rather expressway than highway, because Slovak Technical Norms don't recognise half profile highway, only expressway. Problem is that literally whole this highway is in mountains and it will be whole on bridges, estakades, tunnels and embankments. That's why construction is so slow and in half profile only.

With such heavy truck traffic, road connecting both factories should be at least 2x2 expressway. Do your goverments have plans to build second half profile in near future?
Question about R48.
How far from Cesky Tesin expressway is reaching for now and where is it going to end in future? Is it all finished between polish border and Frydek-Mistek?

Well, other traffic is not so heavy there. But, I'll be happy if they finnish soon at least half profile. Upgrading on 2x2 is very far future. The goal is to get the traffic outside villages and towns and avoid dangerous places on present road. I think in 10 years there will be traffic like 15 or 20 thousand cars a day so half profile will be enough. There are roads with much dense traffic in Slovakia without any highway. The priorities are D1 and R1. In a bit further future R2.

Remaining part of R48 between Frydek-Mistek and Cesky Tesin will be opened this year in full profile. Then another stages are planned to start in 2008:
Rychaltice - Frýdek-Místek, category R 25,5/120 (2x2 profile), length 7,137 km. Expected completion in 2010.
Frýdek-Místek - bypass, category R 25,5/120 (2x2 profile), length 8,566 km. Expected completion in 2010. But here are still some issues remaining not solved therefore the construction might be postponed. I hope not, because even now one can rarely drive through the city smoothly.

Prochází Přívozem a železniční trať Ostrava - Bohumín přemosťuje u ulice Na Náspu. Následuje mimoúrovňová křižovatka s ulicí Mariánskohorská (silnice I/58). Stavba bude uvedena do provozu v červenci 2009.
18. července 2007 bylo na stavbu vydáno územní rozhodnutí. V lednu 2007 bylo zpracováno Oznámení EIA. As I can see noone has posted it yet I therefore report a new 17,2 km long section of D1 motorway opened since yesterday (sat dec 01 2007). The section links Ostrava - Rudná and Bohumín near polish border. This part of D1 motorway was formerly known as D47, but after the plan to build D1 towards the slovak border (R49 expressway is now planned in that direction instead) was abolished, it has been decided D47 to be a part of D1.
Because I was unable to dig up any recent photos, you have to settle with a picture from a couple of months before the opening:
http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/foto/d47f8/07/slides/DSC_9018.JPG
More pictures can be found in galleries here (http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/foto/d47f8/07/index.html) and there (http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/foto/d47f91/).
Two days earlier (thu nov 29 2007), a 9,1 km long section of R48 expressway between Tošanovice and Žukov opened in the same region, thus closing an expressway gap between northern moravian town of Frýdek-Místek and Český Těšín on polish border. It's already the second section of R48 expressway to open this year, following Bělotín bypass (2,1 km, in service since august 2007).
Because there's a shortage of recent photos for R48 too, the same as above applies for the picture here - a picture from february:
http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/foto/r48f7/slides/070925_002.JPG
More pictures here (http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/foto/r48f7/index.html).
Altogether more than 45 km of motorways opened this year in Czech republic and the total length of the network thus reached over 1000 km.
Verso

^^ Really? Do you know the exact length? I guess it's motorways and expressways counted together (I hope just 4-lane expressways), b/c the Czech Republic doesn't have that many motorways; but your expressways are almost as good.

Yep, motor- and express- ways combined. Total currently at 1002 km, 1009 km by the end of the year (+D3).
I hope just 4-lane expressways
You hope so rightfully; no less than 4 lanes, no divider, no emergency lanes expressways in Czech republic. Actually there are many 4 lane, central divider, emergency lanes, limited access roads that are not even considered expressways here. Examples of such roads:
I/13http://stavby.karlovarska.net/images/ds_I13osob-06.jpghttp://stavby.karlovarska.net/images/ds_I13osob-07.jpg

I think it's all about the so called "environmental friendly" policies. For some reasons, people here swallow easier a motorway in their backyards as long as its called an expressway. If they are even more stubborn and wont accept an expressway either, a 4-lane "road" is built instead :ohno:.

I think that is the reason why many countries like Spain (Autovia), Poland (Droga Ekspresowa) and others build so many expressways which almost not differ from real motorways.

Hmm, the 4-lane roads "rychlostní silnice" are much better supported because of they are cheaper. There are not so high demands on crossings, on curving. So if there is need for expressway and this one is to be built in direction where is the traffic not so intense (like R35), the 4lane road is selected then. I do believe that there is nothing about environment. D8 (highway from Prague to Dresden) is being build through the CHKO (protected landscape area) and no plans to "degrade" it as 4lane roads are.
HiRazor
December 2nd, 2007, 06:26 PM
^^Gibberish.
Czech "rychlostní silnice" (expressways) are only marginally cheaper than czech motorways. They're exactly as demanding on crossings or bends as motorways (this is due to the same design speeds), the only way an expressway may be cheaper is that it MAY be slightly narrower. MAY is a key word, because some expressways (btw R35 near Olomouc you mention is among them, others are R1, R52, R56...) are built up to normal motorway standard and so are as expensive.
The non expressway 4-lane roads like those I've depicted above are indeed cheaper though, as their design speeds are usually lower, max gradients are higher, lanes are narrower etc. Basically they are what the others in Europe call "expressways" (while our "expressways" are what the others call "motorways").
(btw more on "the motorway vs expressway standards in Czech republic" as well as possible road classification reform /promotion of expressways to motorways/ can be found on p. 6-7 of this thread)

It is interesting concept to unify the R and D roads all into one kind of motorways (hey sorry but the english terminology is still a bit confusing for me). And I believe that this would help. The roads are expensive to build because of high needs - there are mostly redundant structures (extremely long bridges or tunnels), making the price of whole structure quite high. I thought these differences between R and D expressways are not so marginal
Verso

It's just a pitty to see so few motorways on larger maps (like map of Europe) and think CZ has a rather bad road infrastructure.

^^ On this place a future interchange (I/34 x D3) is planned, the exit ramps have been built in advance and are not functional yet (see map (http://mapy.atlas.cz/#x=-752215@y=-1162772@cs=1@sidx=11@pg=1@app=2)).

Nope, only between Frydek Mistek and Cesky Tesin.
Parts from Belotin (D47 will be opened there in next year) to F-M are almost all 4-laned, but not motorway like. The expressway construction here will follow probably in next 5-6 years

Rychaltice - Bělotín (ca 30 km): a 4 lane road (1x4) in the path of future expressway R48 ("bezkolizna")
Bělotín bypass (ca 5 km): expressway 2x2
Bělotín - Lipník (ca 15 km): a 4 lane road (1x4), on this leg D1 (ex D47) will open next year (2x3 lanes)
