I would like to present the stunning beautiful islands of Capo verde to the forumers. It is a mix between Africa, Europe and something like Brazil. Its cities are just like museums and well preserved. Tourism is constantly on the rise and there have been rumours that large oil reserves lie off its coast. Capo Verde or Cape Verde in English was a former Portuguese colony for more than 500 years but as opposed to the other lusophone countries in Africa decolonisation has been very smooth and Capo verde never cut off its links to Portugal and that is why it still has very strong links to Portugal (they are even debating to enter the European Union and to introduce the Euro as a currency). So they might become something like the French Antilles in the Caribbean but they will preserve their own flag, identity and government. Surprisingly, Cap Verde has a pretty much relaxed relationship to its former colonial power nowadays. Its population of more than 600 000 mainly consists of Mulattos who are of African and Portuguese origin (71%), Blacks (23%) and Europeans (mainly Portuguese 6%). But all define themselves as Cap verdeans. Cap Verdeans have a strong expatriate community in Portugal, France, USA and Brazil. Cap Verde is one of the few well functioning and entrenched democracies in Africa. Personnaly I have never been to Capo Verde so what I know is limited and simply derives from hearsay. I do hope that soemone with more backround knowledge will add more information. ..or simply leaves a comment:)

I am asking myself the same question, why is Cape Verde still so much closed and unknown to the outside world? They need to focus on marketing not just in Portugal but beyond. I am dead sure that tourists will come from many parts of the world. Those islands are truly magnificient.

Africa sure does have some of the finest islands in the world.... (Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Canary Islands, Zanzibar etc.....)

I am asking myself the same question, why is Cape Verde still so much closed and unknown to the outside world? They need to focus on marketing not just in Portugal but beyond. I am dead sure that tourists will come from many parts of the world. Those islands are truly magnificient.

I agree with you my man. Africa has got a lot to offer, negetivity by those who control the media is a problem that hit Africa hard.

I mean look at hwta they saying about South Africa for 2010 Soccer World Cup. They talk from their office in Europe, they not know about all the developments in the country. Even the ones that we post here on SSC for you to see. The other day they showed the pictures of the old Johannesburg on on SuperSport 3. They never said that Johannesurg is clean and people are heading back to the city, they ignore the safety that Johannesburg have spent millions on and how we can walk free in this city of ours.

Wow! Spectacular islands.
I agree with several other forumers that these Islands have tremendous potential for tourism and are not on many tourist's radars. Aside from natural assets of a destination, two prerequisites have to be met for success and economic growth:
1. Safe for people (ie, low crime)
2. Safe for investment (low corruption, laws predictably enforced, private
property respected).
If these two environments exist, a country can grow rich and certainly these islands can.

The archipelago of Cape Verde is in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of Senegal.

Dr.T., Cape Verde is an entrenched democracy and it works very well (due to Freedom House Index). It is investor friendly. The economic growth is above 6% a year, it has already reached the status of a middle-income country, crime levels are very low to what I have read so far and corruption is manageable 8well above African average), the HDI Index is the third best within sub-saharan Africa (after Seychelles and Mauritius)....so it has all the ingredients for a tourism boom...but this will happen, it is already happening, numerous projects are u/c there.:)


ONE DAY I DO HAVE TO VISIT CAPE VERDE! I AM IN LOVE WITH THE ISLANDS :banana: This place is like paradise and the cities look clean and just like museums (tons of well-preserved old buildings):cheers:

The archipelago has a small population also. The city of Praia has about 113,664 inhabitants and the islands as a whole have a combined number of 420,979 inhabitants.

Sao Vicente is a very nice island and it's a good place to stay even though it has seen better days. Unemployment is high (around 30%) and the CV govt is unfortunately concentrating all development on Santiago now. On top of that SV is run by a opposition party mayor, who has to fight for every penny.

But to come back to the original subject: SV was inhabited only halfway down the 19th century when the port became a coal supplying hub for British steamships. Peopled flocked there from Santo Antao and Sao Nicolau islands. The sailors on their stopovers left their mark on the nightlife of Mindelo town untill today, including a tendency for prostitution (as in every major port).

Tourism boom fuels Cape Verde economy


afrol News, 16 March 2007 - Middle-income nation Cape Verde is continuing its strong economic growth, new statistic figures reveal. This year and last year, economic growth is set at around 7 percent annually, with a booming tourism industry providing for most of the growth.

According to Maitland MacFarlan, head of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission that ended its 11-day visit to Cape Verde today, the archipelago's economic and policy performance "remains sound." According to the latest economic analyses, GDP growth in 2006 appears to have been higher than expected earlier - possibly around 6.5 percent, Mr MacFarlan revealed.

"Growth in 2007 is expected to be close to 7 percent and, given the large investment projects in the pipeline, the economic outlook is promising," he said, adding that "inflation is expected to decline substantially in 2007 and reach low single-digit levels by the end of the year."

The IMF mission concluded that Cape Verde's strong economic growth mainly had been supported by "strong public and private investment, together with a sharp pickup in tourist arrivals." Also most of the massive investments had been related to the tourist sector, including infrastructure.

The IMF's conclusions are sustained by Cape Verde authorities. According to a statement late last year by the spokeswoman of the Praia cabinet, Cristina Fontes Lima, the numbers of tourist arrivals from 2006 were set to increase at an annual rate of 22 percent. This had been revealed by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

INE projections had further suggested that by 2015, more than one million tourists would visit the archipelago annually. "This means that the sector could start contributing with 30 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in contrast to the current 10 percent," Ms Lima said, adding that "continuing the dynamic development of the sector, it could employ 53,000 people, demonstrating that there will be more economic growth and more employment."

The cabinet spokeswoman further revealed that in 2006 alone, Cape Verde authorities had approved of tourism investment projects totalling US$ 300 million, "which remains a promising indicator" of economic growth.

The IMF today said it was optimistic on further growth and investments in Cape Verde. While the archipelago already had proven a lucrative place for foreign investors, the Fund nevertheless urged Praia authorities to keep moving forward on economic reforms. In particular the tax code - which holds a complex system of tax exemptions - urgently needed reform, Mr MacFarlan noted.

I have been raving about Cape Verde for years. I'm suprised it took so long for everyone to catch on. Watch this space for Sao Tome aswell. Just as beautiful. Those Cape Verdean women !!!!!!!!!! I had to cool off half way through looking at the photos.

Unfortunately the tourist boom seems to be dominated almost entirely by foreign companies. They dont seem to have learned from their neighbours Gambia or the Carribean nations who have benefited very little from tourism (the profits get expatriated to Europe/US). To maximise gains i would like to see more involvement from locals. There is a huge expat Cape Verdean community in the USA. Perhaps many of them could reinvest back home??

Then theres the problem of freshwater. I dont know what can be done about this, the locals are complaining that too much water is going to the tourists. I wonder if it would be economically feasible to connect a water pipeline to Senegal???? I guess if its possible with oil/gas there shouldnt be a problem.

My friend is in Ghana now and has the choice to go to Gambia or Cape Verde after. I told him thats not a choice and he MUST go to Cape Verde (no offence to Gambia). The women can really dance too.

You welcome Matt. Cape Verde has a cozy and relaxing characteristic to it. The cities aren't very large, the population isn't that large also. Looks like a place where you can enjoy the miles of coastline and have only a few tourist in the mix, which would allow one to enjoy the islands in a relaxing mood.

Mindelo (Mindelu in Santiago Crioulo, and Mindel' in São Vicente Crioulo), is a port town on the Cape Verde in the northern part of the island of São Vicente. Mindelo is also the seat of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Luz, and this island's municipality. It has a population of about 70,000 inhabitants (50,000 in the mid-1990s) and is the second largest city in Cape Verde right after Praia.

The town is home to 96% of the entire island's population.

Yeah, the lusophone countries are particularly interesting. I just wish there were more cape verde pics floating around. They can be kind of tough to spot sometimes...

I'm Jamaican. I was born in Queens, NY, but spent the first 5 years of my life(from 3 months old on) living in jamaica. My biological father is from St. Vincent and the grenadines(another tiny caribbean country). I don't know him, so i don't identify as much with that. My step father is from Ghana, born and raised in Kumasi.

Lets see, what else...my grandparents immigrated to England in the 50's from jamaica-my mom was born there, but the grandparents went back to jamaica when she was like 13. As a result, I've got connections to the UK(plus EU citizenship) as well.

That's it in a nutshell. I live in NY right now.:)

Hi Nicolas, if you realy like dance kizomba best place to go is Angola, where this type of dance is original, and today have evolute to tarrachinha; we also have semba mix of kizomba and latin rythems. One of the original dances of Cabo Verde is Funana.:cheers: and best regards

I hate to bring race into this thread but I've noticed that some Cape Verdians in the pics are brown skinned and Light skinned, some even white resemble caucasians. did they mix with anybody in history or are they just like that?

The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited when the Portuguese discovered it in 1456. Africans were brought to the islands to work there. As a result, Cape Verdeans have mixed African and European origins. Vestiges of African culture are most pronounced on the island of Santiago, where 50% of the people live. As a result, Cape Verdeans are mulattos, who have mixed African and European origins. European ancestors also include Spanish and Italian seamen who were granted land by the Portuguese Empire, followed by Portuguese settlers, exiles, and Portuguese Jews who were victims of the Inquisition. Many foreigners from other parts of the world settled Cape Verde as their permanent country. Most of them were Dutch, French, British (English), Arab and Jewish (from Lebanon and Morocco), Chinese (especially from Macau), American, and Brazilian (including people of Portuguese and African descent). All of these have been absorbed into the mestiço population.


Some 500,000 people of Cape Verdean ancestry live in the United States, mainly in New England. Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, France.
Cape Verdean populations also settled Spain, Germany, Canada, and other CPLP countries (Angola, Brazil). Since after independence from Portugal in 1975, a number of Cape Verdean students continued to be admitted every year at Portuguese high schools, polytechnical institutes and universities, through many bilateral agreements between the Portuguese Government and the Cape Verdean Government.

Although the official language is Portuguese, most Cape Verdeans speak Cape Verdean Creole (Crioulo in Portuguese, Kriolu or Kriol in Cape Verdean Creole). There is a rich repertoire of literature and songs in Creole. In religion, the majority follow Roman Catholic Christianity. There are also some Protestants, Bahá'ís and Muslims.

There had been a lot of construction ongoing before the world economy nose-dived, new malls were certainly u/c...and due to many articles Cape Verde was on its way to become a second Canary Islands...or something like the West Indies.

It has a thriving diaspora in Europe, US, Angola and Brazil. Especially those in Europe were behind so many of the new projects that were iniated until recently.

Rather than going down the "exclusive" and discrete road like Mauritius and Seychelles its going down the mass market, environmental damaging mass tourism.

The Island Jews became the main porter for the slave trade and profitted heavily. Many of the large scale land owners in the carribean are descendants of Cabo Verde jewish population. The oldest jewish cementary in west africa in the island and many carribean Jews trace their roots to this island nation.

Are you talking about people with Jewish ancestry? Thats not the same thing has having the largest Jewish community in Africa. I'm not putting people who have dual citizenship in the same catergory, like most white south african jews do and Ethiopian jews on the other hands are converts. Cabo Verde as I said before has the largest population of Jews/African ancestry than any place in Africa it's in their blood.

Comorian tongue is basically swahili, you can understand this people while they talk so their African. I understand being a mulatto somehow makes you want to percieve the world through your lense but your blowing things out of scale. Dude...they speak different languages but it is not difficult for someone from mozambique to understand someone from comoros due to the similarities in their languages, the languages may be different but similar.....mozambique and comoros basically have same cultural practices...take a look at the makwa women and the comoran women they share similar cultures...it is said most comoran women originate from mozambique especially from the makwas.

as for madagascar, they share similar cultures with mozambique from their traditional music all to their languages ..the madagascans make salegy music which is very similar to the mozambican marrabenta and they also speak some similar languages which are mixed from indonesia and african langiages...some mozambican languages have a strong presence of indonesian ethincal language...the macau people in mozambique also add to their similarity with the people of madagascar due to their race and culture as well

To make a long story short Cape Verdean population is about 75% of varies west african(mostly fulani, berber, blanta, and mandyak). The other 25% looks to be a bit of European and and a vast majority middle eastern(probably jewish and muslim). Alot of times we are looked at and dismissed as some mulatto half/half(not that there is anything wrong with that), but it is much more complicated.

Someone also mentioned that whites were there first. There is evidence on the island that mainland west africans had reached there way before the europeans did.

That was a more technical explanation of a question asked earlier about the jewishness of cape verdeans. What better way to settle it than to give you the best description possible. Being Cape Verdean and studying my people and country for years it's always interesting to find out new things about oneself, but there is no question that the present day Cape Verdean is Christian and African. I hate to bring race into this thread but I've noticed that some Cape Verdians in the pics are brown skinned and Light skinned, some even white resemble caucasians. did they mix with anybody in history or are they just like that?

what kind of idiotic question is this? so are Ethiopians, Eritreans, Northern Sudanese e.t.c. contrary to popular belief Africans do come in every color. the insecurity of some people is simply mind boggling and at times even disgusting.

Well first Cape Verdeans do not have much Portuguese blood or European blood for that matter. There were never enough Europeans on the islands to produce a mulatto population . The majority of the Cape Verdean DNA is from the Sena-Gambia area with some middle eastern admixture (could have come via berbers/Arabs/jews etc.(no one real knows) it's twice as high as the Euro DNA.

That question may make sense if maybe someone who is 1st/2nd generation mixed where they can see themselves mixed in the way the West looks at so called mixed people. For example in U.S. someone a person who is 1/2 African American and 1/2 White would be considered mixed.
Cape Verdeans have always known they some mixture because of colonialism and the slave trade but we look at ourselves as an ethnic group more than race. So to answer your question we are are an ethnic group of Africa. Yes we do have some admixture from different groups because of colonialism, but the vast majority of our DNA is West African and we are country located in Africa.

You can ask that same question of people of the Portuguese Madeira islands they have some Black west AFrican DNA and probably Moorish DNA but from their point of view they are a basically a white Euro population.

And one last point, much of the confusion about Cape Verdean's mixed heritage stems from assumptions based on phenotype. For example we look more mixed than we actually are and I suspect the reason is because many Cape Verdean are decedents of the Fulani people. They have very specific features that maybe considered mixed or may overlap with some Euro features.

True, Cape Verde is really fantastic ..it reminds me a bit of La Reúnion....only the latter has a far higher standard of living and is very developped.

portuguese is only spoken in school, gov offices, official business type things. Cape verdeans who grow-up outside cape verde(besides Portugal) speak Criolo because that's the common language. In cape verde Portuguese and Criolo are the official languages. Many cape verdeans speak 3, 4, 5 languages.
