sweek September 10th, 2006, 01:45 PM Antwerp is beautiful, but I don't think it's very convenient to be honest. At least not in the old layout; I hope it will be a lot better once they're done with the rebuilding.
Not sure if it counts as a "main station" since there are many in London, but St. Pancras is quite beautiful.

From Wikipedia
Glasgow Central Station is the larger of the two present main-line railway terminals in Glasgow, Scotland, and is managed by Network Rail. It is the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, and was opened by the Caledonian Railway on July 31, 1879.
It is the busiest railway station in Scotland. According to Network Rail, the station has 34 million people departing from, or arriving at Glasgow Central in the most recent year. This also makes it the busiest station in the entire United Kingdom outwith the London area. Glasgow Central serves all of the Greater Glasgow conurbation's southern towns and suburbs, the Ayrshire and Clyde coasts, as well as being the terminus for all inter-city services to destinations south of the border.

DiggerD21 January 7th, 2007, 02:07 PM Sports events in a railway station? :?:
freeluas January 7th, 2007, 05:28 PM yes its a fantastic station, plus it has good food facilities and a nice bar to have a drink and admire the view. Also when the building is finished and the outside re surfaces it has several tram routes for onward journeys.
Same for Amsterdam Central, which also has all its tram routes conveniently commencing there. No point having a Central Station without further onward transport links. Havnt a good Photo but Sao Bento in Porto is very nice, with huge mosaics and tiles on the walls, curently being restored. Spain has more than a few beauiful stations too. More like Cathedrals than mere stations.
Mo Rush January 8th, 2007, 01:46 AM Sports events in a railway station? :?:
not really..i just think the roof is awesome...the design would make an awesome indoor arena..

It is not really a culture shock, bearing in mind that the Groningen museum is a mix of styles, and built in the canal separating the station area from the old city.

Justme January 11th, 2007, 04:50 PM Barcelona França station was the central station until 1976, now it is the 2nd central station of Barcelona and it is becoming busier and busier.
;)
That's great news. I read somewhere that they were planning on closing Barcelona França, which I found really sad, as it's such a lovely station. Glad to see that they will keep it now.
Pity it's not on the metro though, although from memory, a few "rare" commuter trains passed through or terminated at it. It really should be somehow more integrated into the great network Barcelona has, and used more.
Is this now the main terminus for the High Speed trains to Madrid? Or just secondary for that HS link?
Bitxofo January 11th, 2007, 07:12 PM ^^Metro line 4 arrives to BCN França, station Barceloneta. Also commuter train line R10 arrives to França station, from BCN airport.
;)
Now, França station is the main station for H.S. trains to Madrid.
earthJoker January 11th, 2007, 10:35 PM But Barceloneta station isn't really connected to BCN França is it? If I remember correctly there was some distance between the two stations.
Are the H.S. leaving from França because it has standard gauge and Sants Estció has iberian gauge?
Sports events in a railway station?
There are sport events in the Main Station of Zürich, like beach soccer or beachvolleyball:

I'm sure the'll close it down once they've built the planned station at sagrera. Now for me the real station in Barcelona is Estacio del Nord although it now serves as a Bus station. I wish I had seen that one i full operation with steam engines. Easily on pair with Atocha although on a smaller scale. Franca i think is just sterile and boring. For Europe I vote for Amsterdam.
Bitxofo January 13th, 2007, 02:40 AM ^^BCN França station is NOT going to be closed, it is decided!
;)
Trains traffic is increasing a lot in Spain thanks to H.S. and with the liberalization of railways more stations will be needed for all the new rail companies.

greg_christine January 13th, 2007, 03:31 PM Sports events in a railway station? :?:
How about sporting events above a railway station. Pennsylvania Station in New York City is in the lower levels of Madison Square Garden:

Depending upon the type of event, Madison Square Garden can seat up to about 20,000.
greg_christine January 13th, 2007, 03:37 PM It should also be noted that North Station in Boston is in the lower levels of TD Banknorth Garden, which replaced Boston Garden:

but there aren't too many stations in the world that take a decent photo pretty much from the full 360 degrees. Flinders Street Melbourne is one of them.

UT596001 January 27th, 2007, 07:36 PM But Barceloneta station isn't really connected to BCN França is it? If I remember correctly there was some distance between the two stations.
Are the H.S. leaving from França because it has standard gauge and Sants Estció has iberian gauge?
The trains between Barcelona and Madrid runs in HSL from Madrid to Roda de Barà, in this station the train change the gauge and runs in the standard line to Sant Vicenç de Calders, and in then to Barcelona via Vilanova i la Geltrú (but, when this line falls the trains runs to Barcelona via Vilafranca del Penedès). In Barcelona Sants, now, only have 8 iberian gauge tracks. All trains (except Altaria "Triana") continue to Barcelona-Estació de França via Passeig de Gràcia (the really 2nd more important station of Barcelona, all Catalunya Exprés trains and suburban trains stop in) because Sants station now are in works for rebulding station and for the arrive of HSL line, and the Estació de França station have little traffic is ideal for the finish of this trains.
Two points:
1) Estació de França has during long time (since medium 90's) the terminal of Catalunya Exprés trains network to the south of Catalonia (Tarragona, Valls, Lleida, Mòra la Nova, Zaragoza, Reus, Tortosa, València). When the Sants station rebulding works started some Arco trains (Barcelona-València and Barcelona-Murcia) started in Estació de França, at the same time the Talgo trains Barcelona-Montpellier "Catalan Talgo, Barcelona-Paris "Joan Miró" and Barcelona-Milan/Zürich "Pau Casals" started in Estació de França for the same reason. More time ago, when we restablished the direct link between Barcelona and the Airport, we choose to terminate the trains at Estació de França because Sant Andreu Comtal station are more busiest than Estació de França and haven't got any trains to terminate the trains at Montcada-Bifurcació or Granollers-Centre. Later, when the trains of Barcelona-Madrid line where are changed (from VII Talgos+252 electric locomotive to 120 emu trains with automatic gauge change system) there are changed their finish station to Barcelona-Estació de França and have their base in this.
2) Talgo "Triana" not finish at Estació de França because the Talgo manteniment base are located at the north of Sant Andreu Comtal station, and when the train arrives to Barcelona goes later to this station. This is the same operation for all Talgo trains (except Cartagena-Montpellier "Mare Nostrum").

JoKo65 February 28th, 2007, 05:16 PM I don't think so, since of it's modernization it's one of Germany's best.
Justme February 28th, 2007, 06:24 PM ^^^ I agree. It's been remodelled quite well in the last few years. The only let down is the platz in front of the Dom as you leave the main entrance.

HansA March 5th, 2007, 04:18 PM I don't see what's so special about Cologne's Hauptbahnhof. Many main stations in big german cities look similar. (Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne). In my eye's, the new Hauptbahnhof in Berlin is one of the best in Europe.
My top 5 in Europe would be:
1. Berlin Hauptbahnhof
2. Amsterdam Centraal
3. Antwerpen Centraal
4. Beloruskaya Vokzal (Moscow)
5. Kazanski Vokzal (Moscow)

Munich is totally different.
Frankfurt and Hamburg look similar, but they are not in such a good shape as Cologne.
Berlin is from another epoche, can't be compared.
Another aspect is the Cathedral and the Rhine in neighbourhood to the station that's simply great.
JoKo65 March 5th, 2007, 04:40 PM Not to forget: Cologne ist the german number one for high speed trains.

Glodenox September 21st, 2007, 11:56 PM Just a small correction about Antwerp Central Station: Those shops are located on floor 0 ;) At floor -1 there are going to be 4 more terminating tracks, but those aren't finished yet (though they are nearing completion I've seen).
I must say I've been happily surprised by many of these railstations that were in this thread...

FREKI September 22nd, 2007, 10:28 PM what are your favourite central/main stations?
In terms of design I was very impressed by Washington DC's.. ( my only complain is that they make you wait like in airports before they let you onto the plantforms so you can board the train - that was hella anoying - but the station was great! )

Sky_Line September 26th, 2007, 08:30 PM Antwerp is beautiful, but I don't think it's very convenient to be honest. At least not in the old layout; I hope it will be a lot better once they're done with the rebuilding.

earthJoker October 3rd, 2007, 05:23 PM It could be an error, it is maybe Sx, S-Bahnhof instead of 5x
It's not an error, the tracks are just not numbered through. The reason for this is simple, this way you can easier for the passenger to find out where to go. You have to see that tracks 51-54 are only temporary until 31 - 34 are build.
I don't know why the numbers 4x are not used. Actually I think tracks 1 and 2 should be 41 and 42, and the tracks 3-18 should be 1-16.
Letters are not used because they already define the sectors of a track.
BTW there are 26 tracks.

Schmeek October 4th, 2007, 07:23 PM I love Train stations....they seem to hold a certain magic. It's like any major transport hub, I suppose, like airports; there is a buzz to them because there is invariably a mix of people from all walks of life from many different nations each doing their seperate thing, trying to get somewhere. But I think train staions have something more than airports or bus stations. I think because many of them are so old, you can sense/smell the history and the people from a bygone age.
My favorites from those I have visited are London St Pancras, Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Amsterdam Centraal, Paris Gare du Nord, and I loved the station at Marseille for it's location because as soon as you leave the train and exit the station you are presented with an amazing view over the whole city!
And as a Bristolian I suppose I'd better add my city's station, the beautiful Bristol Temple Meads. It is the oldest railway terminus building(or main station) in the world. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, trains first ran here in 1840.

Justme October 5th, 2007, 07:25 AM Previously I had listed Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof as one of my favourite stations, but having used it extensively over the last few days I sadly will exclude this from my list. The station is still visually impressive, but a station needs more than cosmetics to be great. The problems I found for Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof were as follows:
• Some of the East/West (top level) platforms are far too narrow for practical usage, and this is already before the station has even reached it’s capacity. There are area’s on the platform where the escalators or light wells are placed and here there is little more than a meter or two of space. Coming off the ICE, it was so packed it was almost impossible to get off the train. This didn’t just happen once, but several times and also on the S-bahn trains that use that top level.
• When I came off the ICE, I needed to buy a local train ticket for the S-bahn. I could only see four ticket machines on the platform (in pairs and spaced quite far apart), and everyone else coming off the ICE were having the same idea, so there were long lines behind each machine. So long, it took me 20minutes to get a ticket missing several S-bahns in the process. Again, I noticed this several times when I used the station.
• At the end of the journey, I had arrived at the station with several hours before my train to kill and wanted to shoot around the city. Usually this is a simple process of storing my luggage, but not at this station. There was only one left luggage point which had a massive line that covered a good section of that side of the top floor. I waited for 15 minutes but gave up when the line wasn’t moving and realized that their left luggage was already full. This is crazy as it wasn’t even a weekend, just a normal weekday.
• The Hauptbahnhof, it’s all it’s physical glory is really in a stupid location with poor connections to the rest of the city. I noticed on their website how they talk of great connections for Europe, East-West, North-South, but this is really just advertising nonsense. It doesn’t matter if trains come from the North and that they enter the station from the North. I came from the South and entered from the West. What really matters is local transport, and this station is very poor for this. There is no North-South local transport at all. No U-bahn stop, and the only local connection is the East-West S-bahn. I know that in a couple of years a small U-bahn shuttle will link it to the south, but it will probably be another 15years before a real U-bahn line links this station.
Sure, many other stations also have some problems, but this is a new station and I would have thought that they would have learned enough from over a hundred years of station building to get these right.

Britomart is a disaster. It was built in a hurry, has had pieces of roof fall in and is hellishly impractical. It only has two tracks leaving the whole station hindering its capacity big time. Not only this, but the whole thing is occupied by old diesel trains which give the station an unhealthy blue haze and disgusting smell, not only this, the ballast has been so stained by oil you can hardly tell it's ballast anymore! A total of five platforms exist, but they park trains in there ready for peak meaning trains quite often double park and this involves running up and down the platforms. It's incredibly poorly lit and at night can be very dark and dingy. As you can quite clearly see, the roof isn't exactly waterproof and puddles form on the platforms, not a good start. Finally, the platform information system is shocking.
So yes, Britomart isn't a bad LOOKING train station, it's just one of the worst I've ever used and I use it almost daily unfortunately.

invincible October 6th, 2007, 12:04 PM Hey, dark lighting isn't always bad. Melbourne's Southern Cross station has night time lighting levels similar to a very overcast day, and it's just a bit of mood lighting. :D Having lots of people and lots of trains at any given time helps too.
http://www.vq.id.au/dump/20070911.jpg
In terms of track infrastructure, Britomart might struggle a bit in the future - the number of tracks and platforms there is comparable to some outer suburban terminus stations over here.
Justme October 6th, 2007, 08:24 PM Britomart doesn't seem to count for me. It maybe the central terminus, but it's really just the size of a suburban station or a large metro station - though generally a lot less busy. I believe they only started Sunday train services in Auckland 2 years ago on only 3 trains an hour on that day.

The oldest operational railway terminus in the world is Liverpool's Lime Street station, which opened in 1836, though the oldest remaining railway terminus, though now in disuse, is Manchester's Liverpool Road station which opened in 1830.
My choice in this poll would be Manchester's Piccadilly station, recently voted the best railway station in the UK.

Named after Point Britomart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Britomart) in Auckland.
If you're interested in our rail timetables...Just go here and type in "Southern Line" and "Western Line" (http://www.maxx.co.nz/timetables/timetable-ordering.html). The Southern Line timetable shows both the Southern and Eastern line so don't worry about searching seperately for the Eastern Line. Yes Auckland is very PT unfriendly (and by the way I'm not a Kiwi, ;) ), and no I really don't think it will ever be a global city really... Not in the true sense of the term.
city_thing October 9th, 2007, 04:16 AM Auckland might be one day. It has the population, the natural setting and weather. It just needs to put a massive amount of funding into PT. Considering how committed NZ is towards sustainability, I'm suprised they haven't announced any major PT transport projects (apart from the City centre loop).
It seems these days that Wellington has really stolen the crown for being 'NZ's best city'.
Auckland does have a long way to go before it's "world class" (this term is thrown about so much that it's lost all relevance) -it has to compete for glory against the brash, arrogant cities of Australia's east coast for one thing, and those cities won't like their tourists choosing Auckland over themselves.
Anyway, back to topic, I liked Britomart. I had no idea it was such a disaster.

For some reason I also love the design Samara, it looks so sci fi like :) I like that.

sergiogiorgini October 21st, 2009, 09:40 PM The thing with this thread is that not all cities have a "main" station, and not all countries have a practice of designating a city's station as its most important. It's really only Germany where they actually designate their most important hubs as "main stations." Maybe we should view it as "favorite major station."
I love all 19th Century stations. It is truly one of the great virtues of France's insistence on using existing infrastructure for their TGVs that these fantastic old buildings are still vital parts of our cities. If Maglev or something else had been implemented instead, places like the Gare du Nord and St Pancras would be on the road to being turned into museums.
groentje October 22nd, 2009, 12:30 AM In many languages, the main stations are called Central Station or something a like, but big cities often have more then one main station, Paris and London as main examples, but also Berlin, where Zoo and Ost are main stations, too.

I think it would be generally accepted that when described as "Main Station", it does not need the actual words "Haupt", "Central" or "Main" actually in the title. Most cities in the world in this case have a main or central station, and in the odd cases where it is not so, it is because they have a large rail infrastructure like London or Paris and have several "Main" stations, any of which would be valid for this thread.
lpioe October 22nd, 2009, 07:59 PM I just meant a big, important (international) station.
You are right, major station would probably be a more appropriate name.

It's a matter of personal taste.I quite like this station
Justme December 4th, 2009, 03:59 PM I agree that Barcelona Sants looks awful. If that is how it looks after renovation then the job was not well done. When I was last there a few years ago I thought it looked pretty bad and in fact much the same as in those photos. The building should be completely demolished and replaced with something far better. Is that the original building on the site, or was there originally a historical station there?
groentje December 4th, 2009, 06:50 PM It's nothing special, I agree, but awful? It's not a 19th century palace or a grand temple for the Progress, but the pictures I see don't give me the creeps or anything. I can imagine it's a very pleasant place to stay.

Yardmaster June 1st, 2010, 02:23 PM Oriente Station in Lisbon is pretty amazing ... as are some of the others above from the Iberian Peninsula ... Barcelona, Bilbao.
At the moment, all we hear here is that you guys are going broke. If you are broke, you have riches to show for it!
A word of caution: don't let them sell off your national treasures, including your railway stations: ... it happens far too often. You'll never get them back.
thun June 1st, 2010, 03:51 PM Lisbon Oriente is pretty amazing in terms of architecture, but it really isn't that comfortable imo (especially the windy platforms). The best is imo Zurich HB - by far.
Yardmaster June 1st, 2010, 08:14 PM ^^ slightly off topic, but general "media" opinion here is that the Euro is stuffed, etc ... general media opinion might be totally revised next week, or even as a result of a Mediterranean raid.
The last two big wars started on your turf, but from my perspective, even if there is a hole in some of your pockets, at least you know what's worth constructing, and what's worth preserving. And knew how to build it in the first place.

Don't trust your media. If I believed local media here, I would believe Australia was a country with a serious racial problem.
The Euro is going through a tough time sure, but when it started it was below the US dollar. It then rose above it and it is still stronger than the US dollar, and Australian for that matter. If it was in serious trouble it would be lower than it is now.
The media does love to ramp up bad news and exaggerate it.

groentje June 6th, 2010, 08:34 AM I don't mind, it's still very nice. As long as they maintain it properly, in a couple of decades this could become a monument. Don't forget that many Belle Epoque houses and stations were torn down because they were considered old-fashioned. Now, where smashing our heads when thinking of that stupidity...

 Great work on a refurbishment to make it looks still like a brand new station in a modern style.
I do wish if some central stations in UK may able to fully (not just partly like St Pancreas) refurbish in such a way like this :)

You realised that it IS brand new, don't you?
groentje June 9th, 2010, 12:00 PM You realised that it IS brand new, don't you?
You had the Lehrter Bahnhof on the same spot, of course, but not as big, not with so many levels, and certainly without so many trains. But you could say that Berlin Hbf is an upgrade of the old Lehrter Bhf.
thun June 9th, 2010, 07:07 PM Not really. There were actually two stations before the Hbf. The Lehrter Bhf. was a huge terminus destroyed in WWII. Afterwards, the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was used as a S-Bahn station on the Stadtbahn.
Before the new Hauptbahnhof was buildt, the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was demolished. So it is a brand new station. If you want to refurbish somethink (that's what you've talked about), you need to have an old structure before. Demolishing it makes a refurbishment imposible, doesn't it? So you can't compare the Hauptbahnhof to historic stations like St. Pancras.
groentje June 9th, 2010, 10:37 PM Well, I guess that depends on which definition you give to refurbish, of course. But that's way off topic.
flierfy June 10th, 2010, 11:48 AM The Lehrter Bhf. was a huge terminus destroyed in WWII. Afterwards, the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was used as a S-Bahn station on the Stadtbahn.
The Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was an S-Bahn station way before World War Two. And the Lehrter Bahnhof itself was anything but huge. It was rather tiny in comparison of other termini.
MarcVD June 10th, 2010, 10:30 PM The Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was an S-Bahn station way before World War Two. And the Lehrter Bahnhof itself was anything but huge. It was rather tiny in comparison of other termini.
I had the opportunity to visit Berlin last year. Including a visit of the museum
of science and technology, which sports a huge railways section. One of its
displays is a large map of the Berlin rail infrastructure before ww2. I took a
picture of it, which I just looked at before writing this post. And from this
map I can say that
- the Lehrter Bahnof was really a terminus station, but indeed not very huge.
On the plan I see 4 tracks and 3 platforms.
- It was not an S-Bahn station but indeed a station of the national railway
system, terminus of a line heading north-west.
- It was not located on the Stadbahn but a bit more to the south, so one
can definitely not say that the new Berlin Hauptbahnof is a refurbishment
of the pre-ww2 Lehrterbahnof. It's not the same place.
K_ June 11th, 2010, 09:25 AM The Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was an S-Bahn station way before World War Two. And the Lehrter Bahnhof itself was anything but huge. It was rather tiny in comparison of other termini.
There's a pretty good picture on wikipedia of the old railway station. (looking to the Northwest).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b2/Lehrter_Bahnhof%2C_1910.jpg/800px-Lehrter_Bahnhof%2C_1910.jpg
You can see the main station hall, and behind it you can see the "Lehrter Stadtbahnhof" wich was build where the elevated Stadtbahn crossed the throat of the main station.
The terminal station was distroyed in the war, but the Stadtbahnhof survived. For the new station it was demolished (and the Stadtbahn was moved slightly)
Now here you can see the new station under construction. This picture was taken looking south.
http://www.smartec.ch/Pictures/lehrter%20bahnhof.jpg
What you can clearly see is the old alignment of the Stadtbahn, with the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof, and the new station, including the new alignment, under construction to the south of it. The old station and alignment have been demolished in the mean time. You do see however that the new Hauptbahnhof is really standing on the site of the old Lehrter Bahnof, albeit turned about 30°, so it really can be considered its successor.
thun June 11th, 2010, 12:07 PM Nobody said that it can't be considered its successor (in fact, DB originally planned to call it "Lehrter Bahnhof" and uses the name for internal purposes apparently). ;)
onetwothree June 11th, 2010, 12:28 PM From the cities I've been to my favourites would probably be Berlin Hauptbahnhof, St Pancras and Gare du Nord (in no particular order). Flinders Street, Melbourne looks gorgeous from the outside as well, but the rest drags it down.

All it is is a bit of wooden panelling, which by the way, is a fire hazard. London has come up with far more interesting and innovative stations.
And I notice you criticise the refurbishment of St Pancras in another post, would you have prefered them knocking down the Victorian masterpiece and replace it with some glass box?

Luli Pop July 8th, 2010, 09:19 PM I love Gare de Marrakesh exteriors. I've seen personally and swear is most of the most beautiful new stations in the world.
But it's interior and "quais" looks really disgusting. Like a cheap american shopping mall or Las Vegas. It doesn't fit the rest of the station nor the city.

sotavento July 11th, 2010, 03:09 AM Oriente Station in Lisbon is pretty amazing ... as are some of the others above from the Iberian Peninsula ... Barcelona, Bilbao.
At the moment, all we hear here is that you guys are going broke. If you are broke, you have riches to show for it!
A word of caution: don't let them sell off your national treasures, including your railway stations: ... it happens far too often. You'll never get them back.
No ... just the stupid guys at the government are going to be broke.
The rest of us will manage to survive even AFTER the state defaults and colapses due to the excessive missmanagement of their own acounts and expenditures. :bash:
Lisbon Oriente is pretty amazing in terms of architecture, but it really isn't that comfortable imo (especially the windy platforms). The best is imo Zurich HB - by far.
Oriente is suposed to be enlarged (from 8 to 13 tracks) in the next 2 or 3 years ... but then again ... these guys (government) seem to have managed the impossible and gone from a perfectly rebuilt economy to a one near the verge of colapsing ... due to their sole pernicious influence on the economy ... go figure how a single term in office of a bunch of stupid people can put an entire countries economy into default. :dunno:
Gadiri July 12th, 2010, 11:41 PM I wanted to say Marrakech but Optimus says it before me. So my second choice is Fes railway station (from moroccan forum (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=60088529#post60088529))

Panya September 7th, 2011, 09:56 PM Does anyone have any pictures of the new Osaka Station? It is the only Main Station in Japan that I have seen worth a mention, but it is a good one. Unusually (from my personal experience of Japanese stations) there is lots of natural light and wide open spaces with many levels to explore.
