Muse September 11th, 2006, 01:29 AM Gee such memories.
I remember waking up after falling asleep on the sofa while waiting for a Hammer horror movie to start @ 2.00AM on the ABC. I woke up, looked at the clock and not at the TV which was still on....10 mins to 2! I thought, "Cool, just in time for the movie". Went to the toilet to pee, came back....kind of looked at what was on the TV. By this time it was after 2...."huh, where is my Hammer horror movie?!" I thought. Looked at the clock, 2.05AM...looked at the TV program and then looked at the screen...
OMG! It started to register what was happening. I remember it flashing along the bottom of the screen "30,000 people are usually at work by this time in the World Trade Centre". I thought the worst. Anyway, 30,000, 3,000, 300 or 3 - 1 life lost was far too many.
The towers were secondary and still are. Just looking at all those faces reminds one of how unimportant the towers were.
Having said that, NYC is getting a whole bunch of wonderful new towers in place of those 2 blocks. Plus most importantly, a befitting memorial park.

CULWULLA September 11th, 2006, 01:39 AM thanks guys. yes muse. totally unreal when watching the whole thing unfold live. my fellowmodel maker-Louie was in NYC from sept1-7. he was up WTC early that week.
wow new design? how tall are the other ones?
CULWULLA September 11th, 2006, 01:47 AM dont worry. found a thread with heights
411m,382m & 288m. amazing cluster of bldgs.
Aussie Bhoy September 11th, 2006, 02:55 AM I was at work in London watching it all happen, it was about 2pm in the afternoon there. I remember hearing the first reports which were that a small plane had crashed into 1 tower and thinking that's wierd. Went to a TV to see what it looked like and watched the rest unfold. Everyone was just stunned at my work.
Mants September 11th, 2006, 05:14 AM my brother came and woke me up in the morning and dragged me down to the TV room. i couldnt believe what i was seeing...
my brother had also got a call from his girlfriend saying that her dad had missed his flight in NY...
that plane crashed into the second tower
i could never comprehend how someone could fly a plane into a building. those people must have had something in their head that shouldnt have been there...
Citystyle September 11th, 2006, 05:43 AM I was sitting on my sisters bed talking, my older brother in the next room was also awake and my mum and dad were to. The phone rang my elder brother went up to answer it and it was my aunt who said New York had been attacked he ran down stairs and told us in a fit we all ran to the TV to see the news, we watched the second plane hit the WTC live. It was shoking because we had no idea what was going on then to our horror we saw them going down. I was 11 years of age about to turn 12 and i did not sleep for two days.
Im not a fan of WTC1 from the bottom half, the top it nice and the others are great, i am in love with the calavantra station and the green space, memorial.
broadie September 11th, 2006, 07:36 AM I woke up in the mornin around 7am and turned on the tv expecting the today show and i was confused
i think its one of those things that everyone remembers what they were doing when it happened
so sad
Muse September 11th, 2006, 07:59 AM How could you not forget how it all unfolded?
Quite a few people I know initially thought the clips were ads for a new blockbuster flick "coming soon to a cinema near you". If only they had been. Ironically there are 2 movies screening now & doing well @ the box office in the U.S.; Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469641/)" & "Flight 93 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475276/)", the latter about the the crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
I've always wondered why the WTC attacks got and still gets more attention than The Pentagon and Shanksville attacks, particularly by the media. They were just as devastating but I guess the reason being The WTC & NYC had/have higher profiles.
Macca-GC September 11th, 2006, 08:23 AM ^But also because of the enormous loss of life IN the World Trade Centre. On Flight 93 only the passengers on the plane died because they fought the hijackers. It's a tragedy that they died, and they died as heroes because they prevented the deaths of potentially thousands more. And with the Pentagon, well there was only the one camera which caught footage of the plane hitting it and even that footage isn't great. Also because the WTC happened first and i think especially because of the deaths of the firefighters who were trying to rescue civilians in the towers. More people who died as heroes.
Looking at that montage of the people who died really brought back the memories for me. I remember waking up(I was 12) and walking out to the lounge room to find my dad glued to the TV. I honestly couldn't believe it. I know I was absolutely shocked. I remember getting to school and no one wanted to talk about anything else. We didn't want to go into class. We just wanted to watch the news reports come through. Absolutely horrific stuff. I remember on the day, saying there's gonna be a war over this. I was doubly scared cause my dad was in the army at that time. Mind you, it was worse when he was told to get ready to go to Iraq, but yeah. I can barely even stand to watch footage of 9/11. Bali Bombings, London Bombings, I can watch then, but 9/11, I'm never going to be able to completely bring myself to terms with it.
CULWULLA September 11th, 2006, 08:34 AM i went to bed about 10;30 and was woken up when 2nd plane hit at 10;45 est.then i was up until 5am. thinking that it was never going to end, because no one knew how many other attacks were going on. Ill never forget the 7am train trip to city. the train was silent and people crying.andrew denton was on 3mmm and was talking calls.
shocker. lets hope it never happens again.
crawf September 11th, 2006, 08:47 AM I've always wondered why the WTC attacks got and still gets more attention than The Pentagon and Shanksville attacks, particularly by the media. They were just as devastating but I guess the reason being The WTC & NYC had/have higher profiles.
i would say, because more people died in the WTC attacks
Mants September 11th, 2006, 09:08 AM bali in a sense is far worse than WTC
bali has lost heaps of tourists, tourism being their main industry, and are now facing really tough times. its just so sad.
however, every act of terror is as bad as the other. no one should die at the hands of a terrorist. thank God it hasnt happened in Australia yet.
crawf September 11th, 2006, 09:13 AM According to some article i was reading the other day, Melbourne would be most likely to be hit by Terrorist Attack, rather than Sydney.
Mants September 11th, 2006, 09:15 AM of course there have been many terrorist attacks planned on Melbourne, but who can really say where it is going to happen?
Muse September 11th, 2006, 09:36 AM however, every act of terror is as bad as the other. no one should die at the hands of a terrorist. thank God it hasnt happened in Australia yet.Oz actually has had a terrorist attack; The 1978 Sydney Hilton Hotel Bombing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilton_bombing). 3 people died and others injured.
Mants September 11th, 2006, 09:54 AM oh yes, but nothing significant in the last few years thankfully
DonQui September 11th, 2006, 10:00 AM Thank you all for your sympathy. I would have thought that most people would feel this way, but already, especially in the Portuguese forum, people are being sons of bitches and turning this tragedy into an all out anti-American mud slinging contest. Any other day I would admitedly still not like it, but would take it more in stride. But to do it this day........ :(
one of a long list of commentaries that makes my blood boil:
i will never forget that day, too. when i start forgeting... the september 11th date comes again and the mass media begin to talk about it again... and i remember that day again  mass media guys are a bunch of bad boyz
:hilarious :hilarious :hilarious :hilarious
Oh well, best to ignore them, although any new incarnation of Samantha would be welcomed at this point. :D
Here is something I posted in another part of the forum, a little long winded version of the day for me:
This will be one of those days that I remember the rest of my life. Sorry if I ramble on, but, this is just one of those things that I don't think about what I am writing, I just do.
I had just finished moving in that weekend prior into uni in Boston. It was the day before classes started as such, I wanted to sleep in late and get well rested. My cell phone rang, looked at the clock, saw it was about 9 am, and just went back to sleep. I got up at 10:30 am, and my roomate turned to me and just said flat out, "the World Trade Center got destroyed."
I ran downstairs to a girl's suite that I knew had a television. And I just saw the television. My first reaction was shock. My high school (blue circle) is four blocks north of ground zero (red cuadratic). My father's office was a couple blocks south (green circle).
http://i4.tinypic.com/2hyw77k.jpg
I think I saw the second tower collapsing. At this point though is where it just stopped being what everyone was seeing and I began to feel more personally attacked.
As the second tower's plume began to descend onto Manhattan, I saw very clearly people running north from my high school. I began to recognize some faces. What happened was, after the first plane was attacked, everyone was ordered to go their homeroom to await further instruction. As they saw on TV what was happening, they only had to look at their window and see it unfold right before their very eyes. For whatever reason, either the state police or the NYPD or perhaps even federal enforcement then took over the schools of the area and ordered a lockdown, not allowing anyone to leave or enter. Then the first tower fell. From what my friends who were seniors at the time told me, the sky almost instantaneously turned dark, and the building shook.
At that point, the police forces started to evacuate the school, and as they were evacuating my old high school, my pride and joy, where I had spent 4 great years of my life, the second tower collapsed, and the entire student body just ran. And ran. And ran.
So this was what I was seeing unfold before my eyes, my high school being blared all across the world, students running away. Then the news reported that a bomb threat had been issued against my school. In retrospect it seems silly, but at that point, I just walked out the room, went back to my suite, and sat on my bed, and just cried. Not just snifles. I don't think I had cried that much since my grandmother had died.
Then though I started to put two and two together: my father. They started talking about people being killed by the falling debris. I then started to freak out about my dad. Obviously everything turned out to be OK.
He got to work a little bit late, and as he got out of the subway station, he saw people looking up at the sky. The first tower was burning from the first plane. He then starting asking people what happened, and people around him were not really sure what happened, they thought a bomb maybe had exploded. Needless to say, once the second plane hit (and what from my dad describes was a deafening roar, apparently as they accelerated right befor hitting the tower) and the BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. Everyone down there quit their arguing and all apparently started discussing one thing: we were under attack.
My dad, being the workaholic that he is, simply went to his office. But, luckily commen sense told him that he should probably get the hell out of there. Apparently his office manager thought the same, and everyone was evacuated according to NYS State procedures for the building. Of course the procedures said to wait in the lobby that faced to smoldering towers. My dad then, smartly, said that he was just going to head home and take a personal day as opposed to waiting around to see what else would be hit (at that point people still did not think the towers would collapse).
My dad got on the subway and went home. However, a few stops north, the subway was evacuated. As he got out of the subway, he saw a plume of smoke where one of the towers had been and saw people running. Eventually, he started just walking the 20 km home. Well, how else would he get home? As he continued walking up north, he saw more and more people with debri litering the hair, their faces, their clothes.
Anyways, this is what my father told me after I had gotten in contact with thim. However, those were perhaps the longest 6 hours of my life. No phone in New York was working. I called, I called, called my grand parents and finally they told me at about 4 pm that he had called from Manhattan and that he was slowly making his way up to the Bronx.
My friend from New York called me hysterical, and we went to a vigil being held on campus. And we literally stood around and cried into each other's arms. I then got really emotional when I looked down and finally looked at the shirt that I had put on that day in such a rush. It was my senior year t-shirt, and, the design on the front included the skyline as it looked from my high school. Looking at the Twin Towers on my shirt, and knowing that they were just a pile of rubble with thousands of people interred, I think I was the saddest I have ever been in my life.
Fortunately for me, I was starting uni, so I had the benefit of having something to distract me. However, I went back for Thanksgiving break, and simply had to go and visit. The WTC was a part of my life for four years, and they were not there. I took the subway down, and as I got off my old stop, "Chambers Street-WTC," I started to get teary eyed. Then, after I walked a block that normally was obscured by the towers, and all I saw was sunshine. And a pile of rubble 30 m tall. I just started crying again, all those emotions that I had surpressed. Crying turned to rage as I already saw fucking tourists taking pictures making their retarded peace signs and smiling. The fucking nerve! The rubble was still smoking!
That's it. I've just made myself depressed again just thinking about it.
Why?!
Perth4life September 11th, 2006, 11:16 AM thats such a sad story.
i was only 10 when it happend, can't remember much and the teachers at my school wouldnt tell me anything, grr.
Anyone watch that documentary on chanell 7 on saturday night early in the morning about it being a conspiracy?
and is did anyone watch Path to 9/11 and is watching part 2 tonight?
tampamobster21 September 11th, 2006, 12:15 PM I remember exactly what I was doing on 9-11 I was 15 at the time and I was living in Portland, ME, which those of you know is where Muhommad Atta caught a flight from MY airport to Boston (My second home). It is my mother's birthday, but we obviously are not going to do much celebrating. I was actually supposed to be in class, I was a sophomore, and I decided to cut class for some unknown reason. Before I had even ate breakfast I turned on the television to find out how the weather was going to be and to me what appeared to me as a sick preview of 9-11 type movie. I watched horrified and hysterical over what is going on I called my mothers friend whom I was really close with. I told her to turn on the television because the World Trade Center had been hit. I remember us talking and crying because my mom and my little brother were not home, wondering where they could have gone.
Come to find out later, she was on I-95 in Boston to the south and she was actually stopped in the middle of the highway because traffic had just stopped and she later told me that people were getting out of their cars and balling for family members and friends that worked in the WTC. She had said that people were freaking out thinking that it was going to be Armageddon.
I sat at home for I do not even know how long it was, I was plastered to the television. I did not move to do anything, eat, go to the bathroom, and all I could think about was, "Where is my mom?" I finally saw her at about 5 in the afternoon and I think I hugged her so hard it nearly made me pass out. I remember I was so hysterical I did not even think about my other family, which lived on Cape Cod and in Connecticut. I could only think about my immediate family. We all sat up and cried that night. We justwere glad everyone we knew was safe and prayed for the rest of the victims.
I know I will NEVER FORGIVE the people who showed America what true loss is. I NEVER FORGET those first responders, who saved as many lives so the toll was not greater.
Tyson September 11th, 2006, 12:21 PM A very sad day indeed.
I was the only one up at my house and was on the computer with the radio on Triple M. The DJ inbetween songs said something about a small plane hitting the world trade centre, but I didn't think much. After a bit I got up to get a drink or something and walked through the lounge where the TV was still on. By that stage every channel was already showing a live feed from one of the US channels. I went and woke my dad up and told him a plane had crashed in New York and the trade centre was on fire. After he got up with both sat down and watched. It was only a few minutes later that the second plane flew into the south tower, caught by every TV camera that was there. We both stayed watching until a while after each tower had collapsed.
I have seen a few doco's about conspiracy theories and such and don't believe any of it is true. Anyone with any knowledge of commercial aircraft knows just by looking at these conspiracy theorists video tapes that United 175 which was a 767-222 was not carrying any sort of weapon on its fuselage. Some of the theories are just bizarre. However I think many people were suspicious because the of behaviour of the government concerning the pentagon attacks where they seized video footage and stopped it's public release and so on. But considering the building in question was the Pentagon, its not surprising. I also went to the movies and saw United 93 a couple of weeks ago.
Adam from Oz September 11th, 2006, 12:52 PM You might like to watch, "Loose Change 2", incidentally on the History Channel on Foxtel at 9pm tonight.
While some of it is pretty far fetched, it presents a strong argument that no airplane could have possibly hit the Pentagon.
Give it a look. Free to watch on the Internet. Very interesting..
Cheers,
Adam
Gertzy September 11th, 2006, 01:33 PM I was 11 when this happened, i remember being woken up at 11pm by my mum and dad saying that a plane had hit the World Trade Centre, they were watching CNN (On Austar), at the time, it was some trade report, but it was immediately interupted by a news bulletin, saying that the North Tower experienced an explosion,
but though i was too tired to get up, so i went back to sleep, but i eventually woke up in time to see the live feed of United 175, crashing in the South Tower.
CULWULLA September 11th, 2006, 01:35 PM hmmm, the Pentagon events sounds suss dont they? when i saw footage of damage i always thought wheres the plane? or anything? not sure what to make of it.
thanks for post donqui.
auslankan September 11th, 2006, 01:39 PM When did we start using the stupid fucked up US date system? I always thought the date was the 11th of September 2001? = 11/09/2001 not 9/11/2001 or did it really happen in November?
Tony P September 11th, 2006, 02:17 PM I came home from work, logged onto the forums for a few mins, then hit reload to see if any new threads came up and there it was - 'plane crashes into WTC', but at the time it seemed vauge as people were still not sure what type of plane it was (I thought maybe a cesna or something small!). I quickly turned on the TV and the news broadcast was just starting where we found out it was somewhat bigger than a cesna. I watched as the second one went in.
At the time I was also wearing a tshirt which had the WTC buildings in the design on the front. Creepy!
uewepuep September 11th, 2006, 02:17 PM Sep.11 always makes me feel sick, I can't imagine how people could do such an evil thing. I used to worry that New York would never recover from this. To me, the new towers some how prove it has.
i always thought wheres the plane? In the Pentagon.
Sorry, I just hate conspiracy theories.
When did we start using the stupid fucked up US date system? I always thought the date was the 11th of September 2001? = 11/09/2001 not 9/11/2001 or did it really happen in November? You are an embarrassment.
Mants September 11th, 2006, 02:22 PM some people believe it occured on 9/11 as it matches the US emergency number 911
same as the planned Australian attacks which were 11/2, 112 being the Australian mobile emergency number
dont know how genuine that is, but it is an interesting theory....
Tyson September 11th, 2006, 02:37 PM I don't go for theories like that even though I understand there are people that do. You can find a coincidence for just about anything if you look hard enough and coincidences of even the most mundane and trival things is what forms the basis of most conspiracy theories.
It's not to say that genuine conspiracies never happen. But something of this scale would be as good as impossible to fake.
Adam from Oz September 11th, 2006, 02:55 PM ^^ I'm not a conspiracy theory nutcase myself but I also believe that governments will lie through their teeth to protect their own interests.
I also have an open mind and think for myself.
There are many inconsistencies in the US government's official report on 9/11.
Why? Doesn't hurt to ask.
I wonder what happened to Porsche 911 sales after 9/11?
Cheers,

According to this (http://filosofia.org/his/20011012.htm), the date may have been chosen because it was the anniversary of two important events (http://info.jpost.com/1999/Supplements/JewishHistory/today.cgi?mon=9&day=11) in the history of Zionism: the founding of the first moshav in Israel, Nahalal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nahalal), exactly 80 years before the attacks, on 11-Sept-1921, a date which itself was chosen to commemorate the founding of the Jewish Colonization Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Colonization_Association) on 11-Sept-1891, 110 years before the attacks. Seems pretty plausible to me. The coincidence with the US emergency number, I think only reinforced the choice instead of being its primary cause.
CULWULLA September 11th, 2006, 03:05 PM a good thing that has happened since 9/11 has been the demand for tall bldgs, not the opposite which alot of people thought.
i hate conspiracy theories also. most are crap.

Nah, you're joking right......... :runaway:
Sad times these last few weeks, Steve, Brocky, Cummo, Chippie, Sept 11, we need a few laughs.
dallas September 11th, 2006, 03:58 PM It's hard to to remember that day without getting upset, the memories of watching it unfold on CNBC from the offices of bank where I worked four floors from the top of Canary Wharf tower in London, the evacuation alarms sounding in the building not long after the second tower fell, the standing on the platform at Canary Wharf tube with thousands of others, and then the tube ride home, and through it all no one spoke a word, everyone too numb with shock to say anything.
After that, no planes were allowed to fly over London for a number of weeks, and my girlfriend at the time learned that the metals broker she was on the phone to at the time of the attack did not make it out alive.
Not many, but a few people from where I worked never returned to work, fearing that Canary Wharf was a prime target and in a vunerable position, being as it was that the flight path to city airport went straight past the building, and indeed when flights over London did resume, myself and everyone else I know used to look either up at planes going into land when outside, or out the windows on the floor where we worked.
I think it may have affected people in London the most of any city outside the US; many people in the city work at US banks and have friends and collegues who died that day. There is also a close historical link between the two cities in business and through the thousands of people from each city living in the other and visiting every week.
Adam from Oz September 11th, 2006, 04:34 PM Re conspiracy theories, if you wanna good laugh, visit some of the conspiracy websites.
Their idea of logic is well, interesting. A land where 1 + 1 = 3.
See: http://www.ctrl.org/
Hmmmm........becomes.......whaa??......becomes....WTF!......becomes HAHAHA!
Yet there was the Zapruder film which proved there was a conspiracy in the JFK killing..
How many square metres of office space were there in the two towers and how does that compare with what is going to be rebuilt?
Cheers,
Adam

Brendan September 13th, 2006, 09:47 AM I'll never forget 9/11... Everytime I think of a year I always think, was that before or after 9/11?
Ok I'll post my story.
I was 9 at the time, my school had a small concert thing among other schools in the Town Hall in Sydney. My parents and I caught the train from a station to Town Hall Station. I remember arriving and feeling a bit nervous. Then I said goodbye to my parents and went upstairs to where my class was, our seats. We watched the other performances and then it was time for ours. We did ours and I remember it being so fun.
On the way out my father was speaking to my school teacher, saying how it's not surprising that most of the people were going to McDonald's afterwards. We of course went there too. And I remember eating a Big Mac and nearly feeling sick.
We caught the train back to a train station closest to us, then got in our car and started to drive home. We were all talking and the radio was turned down low (being around midnight). But my Mum said, "Shh-sh-sh, just hold on a sec." And the person on the radio said "Crashed into the World Trade Centre". My parents stared at each other and turned up the radio. I didn't know what was going on until we arrived home.
They ran to the TV and turned it on. Then all I remember from the TV was a plane crashing into a very tall building. My parents were infront of it for ages. I came in and saw the other tower on fire. Being 9 I didn't know what terror attacks were and I thought maybe the crashes were a mistake.
The story unfolded on TV as we were watching. And then I saw the first tower fall. My Mum gasped, and my Dad said oh...no.
I was told to go to bed as I was so tired. I woke up the next morning and went to school and everyone was talking about it.
It truly was a bad day.
BTW, I've got an extremely good memory and if anyone wants the complete story that I remember tell me.
DamienK September 13th, 2006, 10:10 AM I was 18 and in my first year of uni when it happened. That was also the day I passed my driving test. At 9 30 pm, I was on the computer with the tv on nearby, and I looked at the screen and saw an image of the WTC with both towers on fire. I thought it was an ad for a new movie, but there was a CNN logo in the corner. When I realised it was real I tried going online to find information but most of the news websites were already jammed. Even SSP was down. Then about 20 minutes later images came through that the first tower had collapsed, and I was in shock. I thought that the second tower might remain standing and how odd it would be for New York to have just one twin tower. Then, the second came down, and it was all over. There was the surreal sight of a split screen showing smoke rising from New York and Washington. I ran into the other room and started recording the news on tape, I still have it to this day.
In 2003 I went back to New York. I took photos from the same vantage points that I did in 1995. Here's the comparison:

Unfortunately in 1995 my family and I didn't visit the WTC, we only had views of it from the ferry heading to the Statue of Liberty.
