Buffalo Bills news: Troy Vincent is out for the season with a hamstring injury. He's been placed on the Injured Reserve. Vincent was one of my favorite players on the Bills (along with Takeo Spikes). That's a big loss for the Bills.

Speaking of big losses...

New England Patriots news: The Patriots traded WR Deion Branch to the Seattle Seahawks for Seattle's 2007 first round pick.

Deion Branch was beginning to irritate me, he wanted more money but instead of an extention he wanted them to erase the last year on his deal (It was close to 1 million this season) and start his new deal 6-yr, 39 million for this season. It's going to hurt the Patriots for this season, but the first round pick will help for the next 5-6 years and they still have the cap room (13 million) to go out and get another good reciever next year.

Vincent has been injury prone for a while. I bet this does it for him. At least a rookie will get to play alot.

my rankings of Northeastern NFL squads:

1. Pittsburgh Steelers
2. Baltimore Ravens
3. Philadelphia Eagles
4. New England Patriots
5. New York Giants
6. Washington Redskins
7. Buffalo Bills
8. New York Jets

We got a pretty good collection of squads in the NE... I could see the Top 6 in the playoffs...

Redskins suck. Sorry for any Redskins fans that may read this, but... Dan Snyder is a sniveling idiot who wishes, to make a baseball analogy, he could have the success of George Steinbrenner but tends to end up with a result more similar to the LA Dodgers' payroll/wins/season. If the collection of washed-up players he signs is any indication - this is a late-80s Steinbrenner copycat on our hands.

As for Troy Vincent - I guess it's a good thing the Bills seem to have some decent depth in the secondary. Now if we can get the NFL's self-proclaimed "playmaker/premier cornerback" to stop playing like a Pop Warner player - he made more than a few bonehead plays against the Pats that even I could have at least looked respectable on - we might be able to absorb the blow that much better.

Maybe the Pats fans won't miss the loss of Branch if he was turning into an ego case. Kinda like Eric Moulds - "I want to go to a better team, one that hasn't had 4 quarterbacks and 4 systems in the last 5 years, wah, wah, wah, it's not about the money" and then end up on a team that is nearly a mirror image in terms of recent stability (Houston), only for a little more money. Yeah, not about the money, huh?

Pats will be fine, they'll fill the gap as all good teams do. Just don't let Parcells try to dump T.O. on your ass in a few weeks lol.

My Ravens comes off an outstanding 27-0 win over Tampa, last year's #1 defense and currently looks to whip Oakland the same way at our home opener this Sunday. Ray Lewis (AFC Defensive Player of the Week) as well as our powerful defense and up and coming offensive will turn heads this year. BTW, I was rooting for the Bills last week also. When I saw that 17-7 score, I thought you guys were going to manage to pull it off. I guess you can never count the Pats out. (This is one of the reasons why I despise them), lol.

I agree that the Redskins suck... and Dan Snyder is one of the worst owners in the NFL... but the Redskins may still get a playoff berth in a weak NFC conference.... just like last year.

If they can't beat the Raiders at home, they're going to be the laughing stock of the league for Week 2. The Raiders are probably the worst team in the NFL (you could argue Green Bay too). I expect the Ravens to win like 31-10 or something.

I'm not so sure either, how good a team Tampa Bay is going to be this year. Their defense looked slow and their offense couldn't get out of it's own way, which didn't help against one of the better defenses in the league. I'm not a Ravens hater, I just want to see them with McNair against one of the contending AFC teams like the: Colts, Jags, Patriots, Chargers, Bengals, and Steelers before I proclaim them a Super Bowl contender.

I didn't hear he was definately out, I heard he missed practice today and was questionable for Sunday's game @ Miami. I hope the Bills pull the upset, but it's always tough to play September games in Miami.

I agree, it would be humiliating if we were to lose, but I don't think we are. We will be ready and we won't take the Raiders lightly, especially at the "Big ATM". We will however go up against the Bengals and Steelers twice (hince divisional teams) and the Chargers once. I personally don't see the Chargers as a huge threat (despite the show they put on Monday night), but the first two that I've mentioned are Superbowl caliber teams. If Cinci don't improve on defense, it is a huge possibility we will win. The Steelers on the other hand is something different. They are maybe the most balanced and complete team in the NFL. I predict that one major play in the 4th quarter would decide the winner in both games.

the ravens over the iggles?

well... I could definately see my numbers 2 through 5 changing around... they're all good teams but with some serious flaws... and we don't know enough about them yet...

The Steelers are my top pick because they are so balanced and cool. For being defending Super Bowl champions, it's amazing how little respect they are getting from the football experts. Due to their depth, they are able to overcome injuries and setbacks... and they have the critical big game experience. They may have snuck in the back door of the playoffs... but they made their most of their chance... and I really don't think there's a better team in the NFL right now.

I wasn't buying into the Baltimore Ravens hype machine until after they throttled Tampa Bay 27-0. I thought McNair had been in decline for years... but it seems he's rejuvenated. I still think the Bengals might be better than the Ravens in the AFC North... we'll see...

the Eagles are also coming off a poor season... which I feel was an aberration due to distractions and injuries... I'm thinking they are going to be one of the best teams in the weak NFC Conferance this year...

The Patriots are in decline... and looked very weak against the Bills for most of that game... though I was also impressed that they managed to pull together and win that game on a safety... they have the experience... and they have Tom Brady... so they are always dangerous

I'm conflicted about the Giants... I think they will be a playoff team... but only because the NFC is so weak. I'm not totally convinced about Eli... brilliant one moment... perplexing the next... he doesn't have the precision of his brother and sometimes seems careless...

The Redskins are the epitome of mediocrity... but i could see them getting a 6 seed with a 9-7 or 8-8 record.

The only truly hopeless teams in the Northeast are the Bills and the Jets.

The J.P. Losman Experiment is proving to be more futile as time goes on. Giving up that safety was inexcusable by Losman. He needs to have the presence of mind to get out of the endzone immediately. I think the team will make strides... but they haven't learned how to win yet.

The Jets... Pennington had a big comeback game... but it was against the woeful Titans... I think it would be another dismal year for New Jersey's 2nd team.

the ravens over the iggles?

I agree with Pittsburgh. They're the best until someone beats them and even then, if they lose to Jacksonville this week and the Eagles go 2-0...is anyone going to buy that the Eagles are better than the Steelers? I'm not.

I don't mean to be a homer, but I don't know how you can rank the Ravens or the Eagles over the Patriots. The Ravens added McNair, he's definately an upgrade over Boller but I don't think he's among the elite NFL QB's anymore. Like I said earlier: when the Ravens play a team we know is good, I'll buy into them. The Eagles are a nice team, McNabb is a top 5 QB in the league and Westbrook is one of those all-around type backs that every team would love to have. I'm just not sure how good they are yet. They played Houston, who is going to have another bad season...probably 5-11, 6-10 at best.

Saying all that, the Patriots looked pretty bad at home against the Bills--who aren't exactly an AFC power yet. So I can see why you'd have them fourth. They have major question marks too, like can this rookie kicker make big kicks when needed? Can Brady turn average recievers into gold? They didn't use newly aquired Doug Gabriel (who I think will be a good reciever in this offense) and rookie Chad Jackson has been injured with a bad hammy since the beginning of training camp...so who knows how that situation will turn out.

That list will change a lot in the next few weeks. After Week 1 though, I think it's pretty good.

You betcha!!! 3-0 !!! First real test of season coming up against San Diego though.

Tampa Bay's woes continue with Chris Simms out with a ruptured spleen. Ouch. You see broken bones and concussioins all the time, but rarely stuff of this magnitude. This could have killed him if the trainers hadn't been alert.

You guys better post or this thread could get unstickied!!

So who are you guys picking for the Bills game tomorrow?

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict:

Bye Week: 31
Buffalo: 6

Losman is sacked 5 times, loses three fumbles, two of which are returned for touchdowns, the other sets up a 41 yd FG. Finally throws a 58 yard TD pass to Parrish on the game's final play, but Jauron mysteriously decides to go for 2 and it's missed on a dumb Mularkey-esque gadget play.

How's that for a precise prediction! lol

Maybe the Sabres will be gracious enough to play their games, and pick up the Bills' remaining 9 games. I bet you they'd win a few, or at least be a heck of alot more entertaining in the process!!

That's the problem, they're not even fun to watch. Bad teams can still be, and often are, fun to watch. As Jerry Sullivan said in his column last week, he'd call the New England game a train wreck, but calling it that assumes it's something that would draw attention. He said it was the most boring and all-in-all uneventful game he had ever seen.

As some of you may know, I live about a quarter mile from Ralph Wilson stadium - and there are have been some rowdy Bye Weekian fans hanging around tailgating and talking trash all night. Today's not gonna be a pretty one.

I believe this upcoming game against the Steelers is very important. For both teams. If Baltimore wins, I think it gives them the momentum and confidence to go all the way. If they lose, then doubt will rise and Pittsburgh will gain confidence and become a force to reckon with for the rest of the season.
To me, of this regular season, this game is THEE most important.
Anyone else have feelings on it?
I mean, Baltimore is good, BUT, you can't EVER take the Steelers lightly, regardless how happy we are about the Ravens winning roll, lately, or how the Steelers have played poorly at the beginning of this season.

Baltimore has a great shot this weekend of putting the nail in the coffin on the Steelers season. They're certainly good enough to do it with that defense, but it's going to be quite a task. The Steelers have a couple wins in a row under their belt, and may be developing a little momentum and confidence. It's funny, you look at the records and see Bmore as only a 3 point home favorite. But yet because it's desperation time for the Steelers a lot of experts are picking them anyhow. I personally think Baltimore will win this game. I hope I'm right because I picked them in our Yahoo pool at work!!

Right now, the 3 favorites to represent the AFC this year look to be, in no particular order: Baltimore, San Diego, and yes, again...New England.

*EDIT: Whoops! Indy might be a factor in the AFC too...lol*

All the Ravens need to do is split with Pittsburgh and Cincinnatti (already done), and the division title is theirs. They might need to run the table to secure home-field thruout the playoffs.

The Eagles are done. They still have a mathematical chance, but they are not a good team right now. It's the 3rd time in the last 4 games that they have basically rolled over and played dead. Other teams have discovered that it's easy pickins to run right at the Eagles porous defensive line (a D line that we were fooled into thinking had been improved from last year). Wrong!

Indy looked real good last night, but you have to take into account the already demoralized state of the opponent leading into that game. Until Peyton gets over the hump in the playoffs, I'll go with one of the other top AFC teams as the rep in the Super Bowl.

10-3 is great. The Bills and Browns travel to M&T. Baltimore has to travel to Heinz which is always tough, but the Steelers have been so woeful this season that I dont know what to expect.

With that said, Baltimore ought to finish the regular season with a record no worse than 12-4. 13-3 is VERY realistic.

Baltimore Ravens Odds to Win the 2007 Super Bowl

The Baltimore Ravens odds to win the 2007 Super Bowl are quite good, yet the payout also would be substantial. At 10 to 1 odds (as of December 8, 2006 and subject to change from this date), a $100 bet would pay out $1000 if the Baltimore Ravens were to ultimately win the 2007 Super Bowl.

This is a team that like the New Orleans Saints will be heading to the post season for the first time in a long time. Both teams have improved dramatically but the Ravens appears more well-rounded in terms of their defensive abilities along with quarterback Steve McNair's leadership skills.

The Ravens also have been consistent. They played well on the road last week in Cincinnati, eventually losing. But unlike the past two years where the Ravens were unable to win games on the road, this year's Baltimore Ravens team has won in places like New Orleans and Tennessee just prior to the Titans beating the New York Giants and Colts.

According to the much respected Sagarin Team Ratings found at USA Today, The Baltimore Ravens rank 5th overall in the league. Their solid rating is built primarily on scoring results (known as pure points), though a relatively "soft" schedule has the Ravens ranked number 17 in that regard.

The Bears, Chargers, Colts and Patriots are all ranked above Baltimore. Unfortunately, three of those four teams sit in the same conference as the Ravens.

"In some ways this situation offers a blessing to sports bettors," comments Sports911.com Senior Sports Handicapper, Tyrone Black. "Here you have a very good team that can potentially beat any of the AFC clubs ranked above it, but because of the competition, sports bettors benefit by getting exceptional payout odds."

The Ravens have become a dramatically improved team since last year thanks heavily to the introduction of McNair.

Last month, the quarterback rapped up an appearance on the Adalius Thomas Show at a jam-packed Michael's in Columbia, broadcast on ESPN Radio 1300, by playing a little word association with our friend and co-host of the show, Anita Marks.

The final word: "Titans."

McNair's response: "Losers."

And the place went nuts.

The city of Baltimore will go nuts if they somehow manage a second Super Bowl title this decade.

That would be awesome! ^^
And, as said above, I believe the Ravens will have, at least, a 12-4 record AND maybe 13-3.
I have a feeling we have not yet seen the "best" of the Raven's game. :)
As for Buffalo, I'll think about them when it's time to play them. For now, Cleveland is in the Raven's cross-hairs. :D ;)

 I'm just pushing your buttons guys! I know the ravens will win, but it will be closer than 30-17. Ill say 24-21 Ravens, last minute drive. We always manage to find a way to loose. We should have beaten the Colts,Chargers, The first Jets game, and New England. It should be a better game than what is on paper.

Sure is looking like Baltimore vs. San Diego for AFC supremacy right now. But then again, it's often some other team that shows up in the end, like Pittsburgh last year.

I was lovin' the Cowboys being thoroughly humiliated on national TV Monday night!... The Saints are a force offensively. They've been racking it up all year. What a great story, and great morale boost for the city of New Orleans. The big concern is their D, can it hold up come playoff time?

If Rex Grossman can keep playing like he did on Monday night, da Bears look to be the team in the NFC. I'm too lazy to check it out, but what is the status on Tommie Harris? Without him up front, the Bears defense actually looks mortal.

This Ravens fan is a Cincy fan tonight and Im not ashamed to admit it (GO BENGALS!!!!!) That first round bye and home field advantage would be huge. Did you guys know that Baltimore has won more home games since 2003 than any other franchise?

UP NEXT??? Pittsburgh THROTTLED Carolina yesterday. When I looked at the score I thought, damn...the Ravens better be prepared when they march into Heinz next week. Then, I thought....the Panthers havent been good for weeks. They started sucking before Delhomme went down and they've sucked ever since. It amazes me that this team doesnt use Steve Smith more effectively.

Jamal Lewis wont be a Raven for much longer (hey, Im just being a realist). I'd love to see LT in a Ravens uni, but I doubt he would leave San Diego anytime soon. Steve Smith would be a more than capable replacement. Hell, I'd even take Clinton Portis. He'll be available soon (the Redskins cant hold onto/use effectively him and Betts).

excellent point you just made. speaking of our RB's, i think we need to use mike anderson alot more than we do. he can find a whole better than any RB we have. the emerging presence of ovie mughelli has really made a difference. jamal has a few good runs during the game, but he's not that "meat-and-grind" RB he once was that could pound the ball down an opponent's throat. hopefully, once the playoffs roll around, he'll get it together.

Hey Hey,the Bills are doing great right now, too bad there arent enough spots in the playoffs. Here is what needs to happen for the Bills to make the playoffs:

This win by the Colts knocks the Bengals into a four-way tie for the final two AFC Playoff Spots. The Bengals, Jaguars, Broncos and Jets are all tied at 8-6, one game ahead of the 7-7 Bills.

The Bills must win out.

Additionally, in order for the Bills to get in, they need to pass three of the four teams ahead of them. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: They only NEED 3 of these 4 teams to fall off...so when it says "NEED" in the description, it's only for that team's individual scenario. It's not that ALL of this has to happen, just 3 of 4:

Cincinnati:
The Bills need CIN to lose 1 out of 2…but WHO they lose to matters. If common opponents becomes an issue (NE, BAL, SD, IND) Cincy is currently 1-4, matching Buffalo’s mark of 1-4. From there it goes to strength of victory, where things go crazy, depending on WHO the Bengals beat in their 1 allowed win in the next 2 games. (Beating Denver is better for Cincy than beating Pittsburgh, based on the team's records and also what those two teams do in the OTHER game they play this year - Den v. SF and Pit v. Baltimore)

The Colts victory over Cincy increases the likelyhood that the Bills are alive in Week 17*

*Unless the Jets, Broncos, and Raiders win. Oakland comes into play because it'd be best for the Bills to keep Kansas City in the hunt. The Chiefs have the tiebreaker on the Broncos should there be a three way tie between Buf/KC/Den, then the Bills get the tiebreaker over KC. If Oakland wins, KC can't get into that tie, and the Broncos would hold a tiebreaker over Buffalo head to head, and by virtue of those 3 things happening, the Jets and Broncos would be assured of finishing ahead of Buffalo.

Denver:
The Broncos still play home against CIN and SF. In order to pass Denver, the Broncos must LOSE both games OR If they lose to CIN and beat SF that would put Denver 9-7, 7-5 in conference (matching the Bills), and the tiebreaker would go to common opponents: NE, BAL, SD, IND. Denver’s record is 2-3…Buffalo’s is 1-4. Buffalo would get by Denver ONLY IF Kansas City goes 2-0, to get to 9-7 and into a 3 way tie.

Jacksonville:
The Jags play home against New England, and on the road in Kansas City. If they lose either one of those games, the Bills would pass them.

New York Jets:
The Jets can CLINCH a spot OVER BUFFALO by beating Miami. It would put their division record at 4-2, ensuring that they win a tiebreaker. The Jets need to LOSE to Miami…the Oakland game is irrelevant for the Bills. A loss to Miami would put the Jets at 3-3 in the division, tied with the Bills at 9-7, and their conference record would be lower at 6-6.

There are LOTS of scenarios WITHIN this, but this is the best we've done so far...

Buffalo can control its own destiny in Week 17 IF

Jags lose to Pats
Jets lose to Fins
Bengals lose to Broncos

Then Buffalo would have passed all three teams by virtue of tiebreakers...a win, would get Buffalo in.

Its a lock to get in IMO!

BALTIMORE SUN

PURPLE BABY!

With the Ravens in the playoffs, city officials have ordered purple lights to shine at night on city buildings and have asked private businesses to do the same on their high-rises and storefronts. But not just any purple will do. It's a fine line, it seems, between victory violet and loser lilac. "Businesses should order filter #L126," the Greater Baltimore Committee said in an e-mail to members.

For over the past few years, him and his idiot agent Rosenhouse, have been claiming that he is the best in the league. When in actuality, hes been average. The last two years he has 11 TD's, he might break 1100 yards this year. He cant find the hole, and is not a team player. I really hope he trade him, hes a bum!

BALTIMORE - Steve LaPlanche drove toward the Baltimore Colts training facility on the night of March 28, 1984 with tears in his eyes. Rain and snow pelted the Baltimore area as he jetted from Glen Burnie to Owings Mills. Memories of game-winning drives led by Johnny Unitas and the thunderous noise of Memorial Stadium — known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Insane Asylum” — raced through his mind.

Just minutes before, a friend told him what he had feared for days, the Colts — the Colts! — were moving to Indianapolis.

When he arrived, Robert Irsay’s organization was throwing everything in the infamous Mayflower truck with reckless abandon. LaPlanche stood by the trucks, hoping they would stay, but they soon fled in the dark of night, never to return. There would be no more blue and white jerseys or helmets with the signature horseshoe. “I literally had tears in my eyes,” LaPlanche, 53, of Pasadena, said Sunday as he remembered that night. “They were a part of my life. The Colts were the city.”

Nearly 23 years later, the Colts (13-4) will return to Baltimore to play the Ravens (13-3) this Saturday in an AFC Divisional playoff game that has taken on an epic life of its own. “I think it’s the biggest sporting event ever in Baltimore,” Andrew Schaefer, 21, of Perry Hall, said. Schaefer was born nearly two years after the Colts left town, but he carries the sting in his heart of a man who was alive to watch the team leave.

Long before the Ravens arrived in Baltimore in 1996, the Colts racked up two World Championships and a Super Bowl title, giving the city a sense of pride. Hall of Famers like Artie Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore, Unitas and Jim Parker were larger than life heroes for a generation of football fans.

When the team left, those old stars were just as burned as the fans that cheered them on. Since the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Ravens, the Colts and Ravens have played six times during the regular season, with Indianapolis’ team winning four, including the last three matchups.

Never before have the two teams matched up with so much on the line. The Colts beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round of the playoffs Saturday, 23-8. The winner of this week’s game advances to the AFC championship game. The Ravens sold their allotment of tickets for the playoffs to season ticket holders in quick fashion. “I actually bought them a couple of weeks ago on eBay for $210 a piece,” Patrick Thomas, 19, of Lansdowne, said. “I wasn’t going to miss this one.

Schaefer tried securing tickets in similar fashion, but the prices had more than doubled. LaPlanche said he will never forget March 28, 1984 and will cheer his new love on to victory Saturday. “I want to beat them bad,” LaPlanche said.

I am nervous about this game. The Colts defense looked like they got their act together. But I think the Ravens will eke a victory out here. Beside their league sencond best defense, they have a good passing game as well with McNair.

Look for some good shots of downtown Baltimore during the network coverage. They tend to make the home towns look good during national coverage. I hate to say it but they had some decent overhead scenes of Indy, nice shots of downtown Philly and impressive sights of Boston Haabar.

What a great day for a football win! I can't wait until the Colts win today and the Patriots stun San Deigo tomorrow. Indianapolis will host the AFC Championship Game next week with the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS going to the superbowl!

BTW, this is a link for the Indy Star.

It does make me feel bad for B-More. I was only 9yo when they moved here and I was elated. The Colts practice/spring training camp was in my hometown of Anderson, IN for the first part of their existence here, so as a kid without a football team, I couldn't have been happier.

I have read in the B-More papers that the fans in Indy aren't as rabid as they were in B-More. Well, that isn't because of the City or its residents. Indianapolis FULLY supported the Colts for the first 5 years. HOWEVER, The team never got better and stayed just as bad as they had while in B-More. I remember local songs such as 'Lord Help Our Colts,' and phrase such as the "Dolts." The team was threatening to move every season, even though the Hoosier/RCA Dome was still relatively new. When LA lost its teams, it seemed like every day there was a story of the Colts ditching Indy for LA. You can't build support for a relocated team with these types of things whirling around all the time. No wonder many Central Indiana residents didn't care. We too were sick of hearing the moving stories. It wasn't until Peyton that it seemed Indy finally became the "home" of the Colts. Additionally, the City caved and is building a new Stadium and they Colts are here for at least another 30+ years. Since Peyton's arrival, the City has really embraced this team and it is very cool to see Colts stuff everwhere.

anyway, you guys deserve credit for destroying us tonight. i mean, we did not even have a chance. i'm suprised homicide detectives did not come out onto the field and yellow tape it. you know? i mean, there was blood everywhere.
i mean, did you see how the ravens' attitude was? they were like, "well, i guess i'll play a little football for these people tonight. i'm tired. i'm sleepy.
i'm hungry for something to eat. hey, heap! what comes on the television tonight? what you guys doing after this game gets over, if it ever gets over? i mean, what's up with this team?
well, as i said earlier, "congrats", to indy on a job well done.
i think nothing can stop indy from winning it all. i mean, chargers and the pats won't even come close to challenging the colts. i mean, i'm predicting a huge victory over either team by at least 40 points.

Colts heap misery on Baltimore
Ravens never hold lead as season comes to bitter end vs. Indianapolis
By Paul McMullen

The Ravens' Super Bowl dreams were ended by the opponent loathed most by many of their older fans.

The Indianapolis Colts, a franchise that won three NFL titles from 1958 to 1971 while in Baltimore, got five field goals from Adam Vinatieri and beat the sluggish Ravens, 15-6, in the AFC divisional playoffs.

A record crowd of 71,162 at M&T Bank Stadium came out to see the Ravens and the Colts, who played in Baltimore until March 1984, when the franchise moved in the middle of the night to Indianapolis.

Ed Reed intercepted Peyton Manning twice and the Ravens limited the Colts quarterback to 170 yards passing, but Steve McNair threw two costly interceptions and the Ravens also lost two fumbles.

The Ravens were four-point favorites but became the first home team to lose in this season's playoffs. Baltimore's offense consisted of two field goals by Matt Stover.

En route to a franchise best 13-3 regular-season record, the Ravens overcame halftime deficits against Cleveland, San Diego, Tennessee and Atlanta, but there was no comeback this time, as McNair and a feeble offense negated a defensive effort that was good enough to win.

The Ravens' top-rated defense kept the Colts out of the end zone but didn't sack Peyton Manning until the 51st minute.

Down 6-0 early, the Ravens opened the second quarter with a 41-yard field goal from Stover and were on the verge of going on top a few minutes later until McNair threw a pivotal interception.

Three plays after Stover's first field goal, Reed intercepted Manning near midfield. Jamal Lewis helped get Baltimore down to the Indianapolis 3-yard line, but McNair tried to force a pass to tight end Todd Heap and was intercepted at the 1-yard line by Antoine Bethea.

The Colts compounded that momentum change with a 65-yard drive and got a fortunate bounce when Vinatieri's field-goal attempt from 51 yards hit the crossbar and went through, extending their lead to 9-3 with 3:15 left in the first half. That kick proved to be the game-winner.

A bad punt by Sam Koch and a lost fumble by Heap gave Indianapolis great field position on its first two possessions. The Ravens' defense stiffened, however, and limited the Colts to two field goals by Vinatieri and a 6-0 lead.

Vinatieri's fourth field goal made it 12-3 with 10:57 left in the third quarter. Stover answered early in the fourth quarter with a 51-yard field goal, the longest postseason kick of his career. Vinatieri's 35-yarder iced it with 32 seconds left.

It was the Ravens' third straight loss in the postseason and the Colts' first playoff game in Baltimore since Christmas Eve 1977, when they lost to the Oakland Raiders in an overtime AFC divisional game. The Colts will play at San Diego or host New England in next Sunday's AFC championship game.

I think you gave the Colts way too much credit, Steve. They couldn't get anything going offensively, either. I think the Raven's defense did their part. It was the offense that didn't show up today. I knew it was all over when they intercepted McNair on the 1...that was the back breaker.

I don't think they will get past SD or New England, whichever one wins tomorrow. NE has a knack for beating the Colts when the chips are down, and SD is simply the best team in the AFC this year.

It is only fitting that the Colts and Patriots will play for the right to go to the SuperBowl. These have been the 2 best teams in the AFC (and NFL, IMO) for the past 6 years. However, Indy finally gets them in our Dome and it seems as if we have a defense that can actually assist in a win too.

 Subject: Poor Guy

A guy from Indiana dies and is sent to Hell. He had been a horrible
man his entire life.

The devil puts him to work breaking up rocks with a sledge hammer. To
make it worse, he cranks up the temperature and the humidity.

After a couple of days, the devil checks in on his victim to see i f he
is suffering adequately. The devil is aghast as the Hoosier is happily
swinging his hammer and whistling a happy tune.

The devil walks up to him and says, "I don't understand this. I've
turned the heat way up, it's humid, you're crushing rocks; why are you
so happy?"

The man, with a big smile, looks at the devil and replies, "This is
great! It reminds me of August in Indiana. Hot, humid, a good place to
work. It reminds me of home. This is fantastic!" The devil, extremely
perplexed, walks away to ponder the man's remarks. Then he decides to
drop the temperature, send down a driving rain and torrential wind.

Soon, Hell is a wet, muddy mess.

Walking in mud up to his knees with dust blowing into his eyes, the man
is happily slogging through the mud pushing a wheelbarrow full of
crushed rocks.

Again, the devil asks how he can be happy in such conditions.

The man replies, "This is great! Just like April in Indiana. It reminds
me of working out in the yard with spring planting!"

The devil is now completely baffled but more determined to make him
suffer. He makes the temperature plummet.

Suddenly Hell is blanketed in snow and ice. Confident that this will
surely him unhappy, the devil checks in on him.

He is again aghast at what he sees. The man is dancing, singing, and
twirling his sledgehammer as he cavorts in glee.

"How can you be so happy? Don't you know its 40 below zero!?" screams
the devil.

Jumping up and down, he throws a snowball at the devil and yells,
"Hell's frozen over! This means the Colts won the Super Bowl!"

Anybody want the self-proclaimed "NFL's best" running back?

Willis has worn out his welcome (http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20070116/1066004.asp)

Warning: He's not really been any good since his proclaimation, and his personal life is a modest trainwreck. He can be good, but, umm, well, just suffice to say I'll call him Mini-Ricky Williams. Raaawwwwyyyt.

Boy, I can see why you would say that! Buffalo is one of the teams most talked about as a candidate for moving to Los Angeles in the future.
Yeah, apparently having had 3 teams fail there in the past isn't lesson enough. Honestly, though, I don't think it would bother me too much after the initial "shock". I think the NFL is going to hell in a handbasket anyways, and I haven't watched a non-Bills game in several years (and I stopped watching Bills' games this year). It would just be the straw that breaks the camel's back in my progressive decline as an NFL fan. I've been more of a hockey fan since going to a hockey college.

Bills trade RB McGahee to Ravens

By JOHN WAWROW, AP Sports Writer
March 8, 2007

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Running back Willis McGahee was traded to the Baltimore Ravens by Buffalo for three draft choices Thursday, a day after Jamal Lewis signed with Cleveland.

Two of the picks will be in this year's draft and another one next year.

McGahee, with whom the Bills had become dissatisfied, is to travel to Baltimore to meet with team officials later in the day. The Ravens expected him to take a physical either late Thursday or on Friday.

McGahee had one year left on his five-year contract with Buffalo, and had been seeking an extension.

"This is a runner who can make people miss and has the explosion and speed to take it the distance," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "He also has the power and size to run inside. He's a viable receiver out of the backfield and is a good pass blocker, not something every back can do.

"He also plays physical and with toughness, which are things we pride ourselves on here."

Lewis, whose productivity had been declining, was released last week by the Ravens.

McGahee will take over as the No. 1, ahead of sparingly used backup Mike Anderson and Musa Smith, who has primarily been used on special teams.

"We're getting a dynamic back who has the potential to diversify our running game," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "We've studied him, and he brings the same passion and preparation that is common to Miami players, like our Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Getting a player as good as Willis is another example of how Ozzie and his department size up the market and use our resources well."

Said Ray Lewis: "From what I've seen of Willis, he is a heck of a warrior. The way he runs and the passion he plays with is contagious. He plays the game the way it's supposed to be played. I'm truly excited to have him as a teammate."

The Bills were not immediately available for comment.

Buffalo's first-round pick out of Miami in 2003, McGahee is coming off a down season in which he finished with a career-low 990 yards rushing, but led the team with six touchdowns rushing in 14 starts.

In 2005, he had 1,247 yards rushing and five touchdowns in 15 starts. He established himself as the Bills starter in 2004 with 1,128 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns in 11 starts. That performance led the team to trade former starter Travis Henry to Tennessee the following summer.

McGahee sat out his rookie season recovering from major knee surgery.

The Bills are now left searching for a starting running back to play in front of a revamped offensive line that features two new starters -- guard Derrick Dockery and tackle Langston Walker -- signed on the first day of free agency last week.

Third-stringer Shaud Williams is the only experienced running back currently on the team's depth chart.

The Bills have expressed interest in at least two free agents, meeting this week with Chris Brown, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, and Dominic Rhodes, a member of the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts.

AP Sports Writer David Ginsburg contributed to this report.

Have fun with him!

If you keep him happy and ensure that Baltimore's nightlife scene is on par with that of Miami's or LA's, you'll be fine.

He certainly has on-the-field talent, I think the biggest questions are his ego getting in the way (he's done little since proclaiming himself the NFL's best RB a few years ago). Plus his personal life is a bit of a trainwreck - but how many NFLer's aren't?

Didn't he suggest the Bills relocate to Toronto?

That, among other comments about "life" here. He claims he was "taken out of context". After a bad year or two, he'd probably just as quickly advocate the Ravens' departure to Indy.

There were at least two sports bars in Buffalo that offered money ($20?) for McGahee jerseys with which they would shred and use as bar rags. Made the news (including ads placed), in fact I think I posted somewhere before (in this thread maybe? My internet is slow and I'm too lazy to look). I know at least some people participated.

I remember way back when i told you Baltimore fans that we were getting rid of him. Didn't know you guys would get stuck with him! Good luck, get used to seeing your QB down, and much confusion from the Bill Cosby sweater wearing McGahee.

From Bob DiCesare's column in the Buffalo News, 03/09/07:

An NFL TV analyst once said — who he was I can’t recall — that a franchise should neither inundate its roster with players drafted out of the University of Miami nor ignore them altogether. His judgment was that two from The U’s just about right, the implication being that two’s enough to spice a roster with talent but too few to contaminate the locker room with the frat boy mentality common among those exposed to the school’s football curriculum and sundry entitlements.
...
McGahee might well thrive with the Ravens, assuming Baltimore is a city that puts him at peace by offering a nightlife compatible with his high cultural standards. He should enjoy the ride on the loose ship captained by Brian Billick, who surely sees no potential pitfalls in having four U draftees on his roster, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Nick Luchey being the others. Baltimore fans will embrace him, as fans embrace all new arrivals, so long as he resists any urge to suggest that if the NFL considers a second team for Indianapolis the Ravens would be a fit.

He's going to do just fine. I think the Bills were the problem. NO offensive line, NO legitimate deep threat which means Willis had to carry most of the load, and most of all, NO quarterback. J.P. isn't the answer, Bills fans. Let's face it!!

How is it that a running back can be judged based on an offensive line, but not the QB?

the bills will be better when they have a NEW owner and a NEW stadium. A WHOLE NEW TEAM...because the current mess is not working. Not in the office or on the field.

I think I'm gonna convert to a Browns fan...or maybe Detroit.

uhhh... both of those teams are MUCH WORSE than the Bills and have virtually no chance of getting good soon...

you should root for the Tiger-Cats instead

How in the world can you judge a RB's performance on the performance of a quarterback? I don't see the collaboration. A RB can only go as far as his offensive line will block.

For example, Barry Sanders, in my opinion, is the greatest runner of all time. In all the years he played, the QB's he played with were mediocre. Average at best. There were many plays in which his offensive line failed him, but somehow he found a whole and broke it for a touchdown. He was what you called a rare commodity. Willis, on the other hand, had no offensive line.

Who did? You misread (or I should have been clearer) if that's what you thought I said. Unless the QB can't do a hand-off without fumbling half the time. Don't think you'd make it past JV in that case, though.

QB is at least as dependent on O-line as a RB, if not more. At least a running back can have a blocking back and also doesn't have to plant his feet in order to throw a pass (and risk getting blindsided). Case in point is indeed Barry Sanders. He didn't even have a blocker most of the time! (Unlike Emmitt Smith, who is forever indebted to Daryl Johnston - probably the best blocking fullback ever.)

I bet you not even Steve Young could've done anything with a crap line.

Kelly Holcomb is very underrated. He could probably go somewhere and start. And I can't believe the Eagles didn't even make Garcia an offer after what he did when Donovan went down. What in the world were they thinking?
