Just found this DA lodged last week. Site is next door to the Transcontinental hotel. Includes some pretty sad looking renders.... http://www.ourbrisbane.com/psf/servlet/DAServlet/bcc/954771

Definitely nothing spec. but nothing too offensive....

I like it...I think it looks like a small, cheaper version of Soul. This will hopefuly take some of the focus of the Oaks Hotel. That thing sticks out like a rash!

According to emporis, the Oaks is only 77m high.

Find it a bit hard to believe, but then maybe it's slim.

Anything that distracts from the incomparably bad piece of shit which is Oaks North quay has got to be good.

If Brisbane was a g-string, the Oaks would be the shit stain on it.

I even prefer the Woolloongabba Telstra exchange to Oaks.

The Oaks is an abomination, and if I was mayor, I would introduce laws for retrospective development application approval processes, and have the thing condemned....if that makes any sense.....threaten the building owners with a midnight demolition order if they do not comply by giving the building an extreme makeover.

156 Roma St will be 96m, which is the same height as the stunning Lennons Hotel in Queen St....i mean, i've seen 3 yr-olds scribble better buildings with their textas.

^^Damn! You got issues mate. I don't mind Oaks North Quay at all. It could certainly do with some company though.

On the elevations you can read that the signage on the blade sticking out from the podium says "Hotel Artemis". I googled it and apparently thats the name of a hotel in Amsterdam (http://www.artemisamsterdam.com/). Go figure?

I don't mind the design, especially considering it is only a small filler. I wonder why the huge change in glass colour from different angles?

I really like this design. Nice and edgy. It should look good at that end of town.

Hopefully they will be doing up the facade on roma st, the shops there are just hideous including a second had book store, derilic shopfront and a methodone clinic!!! Knock the whole thing down and start over!!

I kinda like these ones that slip through the radar. Just think, if this was in Adelaide, Darwin or Townsville they'd be going on about it like with what we did with 480 Queen Street.

I'm actually glad it is proposed at this end of town and not smack bang in the guts of it. This way we can actually see it!

good stuff. nice simple hotel tower. should give good height over there.the roof is actually 96m, but blade feature rises further to 102m.
unusual noosa architect (Dimitriou) uses ground as RL? not sea level. so who knows how high above actual sea level.

The renders looks decent, the quality relies on money being spend on the facade. If only all of Devine's boxes were built on out of the way sites like this one instead of prime loactions.

The tower itself is awesome, but the podium is shocking.
Looks like dodgy suburban shops.

with preservation of the existing facade, there is little that could be done.

Seems like a decent building, not excessively tall but well positioned to actually be seen for once...

Thats what im talkin about!!
Unless they do a MAJOR clean up outfront the existing street front facade isnt worth keeping... the towers fantastic however!

This is a great building design. It will stand out heaps too cause that end of town is fairly high above sea level. Should be great. Can't wait for this to be built.

I really like this part of Roma Street, has a lot of character with old buildings and shops. I don't think it really needs to be cleaned up at all. It will be a great contrast since it's such a great looking building.

Hows this DA going?

KJBrissy

It's just at the Information Response Stage. Advertising still needs to occur. Probably give it about 2-3 months before approval.

Can someone change the thread title?

I love the design of the tower component, and the renders aren't of the best quality so I'm sure it will turn out even better.

The latern is a fantastic feature. A bit of Las Vegas in Brisbane (Oh, is this the sort of reason why people refer to the city as "Brisvegas"?). I wonder if the lantern will do interesting things, like flash different patterns or change colour. The blade atop the tower seems it will have the name of the hotel, so I'm sure it will be illuminated @ night, either by floodlights or neon signage.

Redress
May 7th, 2007, 08:43 AM
Im not sure but I thought the term Brisvegas is usually meant in a sarcastic patronising sense, used by southerners to suggest that Brisbane is boring? Anyway Brisbane suits me fine so I guess I must be boring too...

shaggers_jr
May 7th, 2007, 09:04 AM
Why would someone use Las vegas to describe somewhere as boring? "Southerners" refer to BrisVegas (actually most people I've met from brisbane use it too) because the whole Brisbane to Gold Coast strip is so spread out and American-like. At least that's what I've always thought. it's certainly not because it resembles Las Vegas in any other way.

BrizzyChris
May 7th, 2007, 10:26 AM
This has been said so many times. Like Redress said, Brisvegas was used as a patronising term in the past by Southerners, because they considered Brisbane anything but Las Vegas (24hr, party town, lots of attractions etc), therefore the ironic nickname.

It's got nothing to do with being "spread out" or "American-like", which it's not.

Anyway back to 156 Roma, nice building for a motel, who the hell are AGAMEMNON??? Are there any other buildings anyone knows of that they have done in Brisbane?

Whats the Lantern?

scottsimmons80
May 8th, 2007, 01:44 PM
My (uninformed, probably!) guess is that it was the rectangular looking object at the front of the building, looking like it was clad in glass. Could be wrong, though!

Whats the Lantern?

Ah, dude. I think you'll find that Brisbane is one of the most spread out urban areas in the world. If not the most, per capita.

Orfeo
May 9th, 2007, 02:44 PM
^
It doesn't matter whether Brisbane is low density or not (and the situation isn't as you suggest - Perth, Hobart, Darwin have lower densities, and I would question why density per capita would be interesting?), it has nothing to do with the use of brisvegas

Muse

Oh gosh, what did I frikken start? I had no idea where the term comes from and have heard Brisbaners use it. Use Skybar for that shit.

This site has been sold off to Ross Nielson Properties, so we may be seeing a different DA for this site as the design doesn't seem to match with Ross Nielson.

MyFavco
August 4th, 2008, 03:57 AM
Ross Nielson have now also purchased the adjoining site at 142-148 Roma Street. He was in the Press last Friday with the statement that they would not be proceeding with the scheme under the approved DA for 156 Roma St - meaning that this tower will not be proceeding.

The DA was always unworkable as it included only the middle section of the historic building, which is subdivided in to three seperate terraces.

I expect that RNP will submit a new DA to reflect the larger site. They paid $7.1M for the two sites, total area 974m2. This leaves out the remaining connected part of the building to the right (site area 230m2).

KJBrissy
March 7th, 2011, 05:36 AM
As stated in the Brisbane News and Gossip thread. Ross Neilson are keeping the DA alive (A003022775). Keeping the value of the land?
