Hyacinthus, you take the most amazingly beautiful flower pictures! :applause:

Are they taken outdoors, perhaps in your & other people's gardens? Or are some of them taken indoors as well?

yes the first pic on this page by hya

little things that pop off? that sounds menacing....to me, the touch-me-nots have those leaves that simply close when touched...not sure if we're referring to the same variety :-)

SEAfan

O but not menacing at all, Raffi! :) They' re just harmless, innocent little plants in the Balsaminaceae family:

When I was processing the pic I thought that it could make fthe base for a nice Indian meal

But speaking of big leaves, I came across a large money-plant growing in my own backyard. The leaves look as large as these, or larger...

Humongous leaves for a tree that seems so small! A lovely thought that they used them to wrap food before the packaging industry took over ...

If you get a chance, please do take a photo of that money plant in your back garden, Raffi, plus any others you might find worthwhile.

Actually such large leaves abound in the jungles in this region, and can be spotted once in a while in urbanised areas....are there leaves of similar size in your area?

Lol, consider the possibilities, Raffi! You might diversify: take pics not only of buildings but of plants as well! :) Actually I remember a nighttime shot of the complex where you live from long, long ago. It showed a lot of lush vegetation.

As to those huge leaves ... I'm unaware of there being any plants with such big leaves, except perhaps at the Botanical Garden.

^^ Nope, I didn't! :D

But I have a travel story on Flowers in Singapore to report: on several islands in Hawaii people absolutely love the Sinapore plumeria because it blooms most of the time and isn't deciduous (= doesn't lose its leaves). Smells good, too!

RafflesCity
September 23rd, 2007, 05:21 AM
hmmm...did you just have a vacation in Hawaii?

LOL...I'm sure that the fragrant plumeria would also be suited in tropical Hawaii as in Singapore. They really add perfume to the warm tropical air. Actually I read that when Singapore embarked on the Garden City campaign, officials were sent to scour other tropical regions for suitable flowering plants, including from South America.

SEAfan
September 23rd, 2007, 10:04 PM
^^ Yes, we did!

I bet they found plenty of flowering, fragrant plants to introduce to Singapore, the Garden City. :)

Such hunts for new plants can also bring about negative effects, though: native plants have to struggle for survival as new specimens are being planted. For instance, we saw whole hillsides full of bugainvilea, surely not native to Hawaii. Yet there they were, in the middle of the wilderness, and obviously loving it!

RafflesCity
September 24th, 2007, 04:09 PM
Looks like you had a great time then! :okay:

I'd be quite thrilled to see what a hillside draped in bougainvillea look like...for one thing they're very commonly used here as a landscaping shrub, and of course, their wild tendencies are carefully monitored by the parks board. They tend to become bushy quite easily.

Here is a pic by Mr D:

Sorry I can't show you a photo of that bougainvillea hillside. You see in our household my husband is the photographer and the driver. This particular stand was the same color as the one in Mr. D's photo, and it seemed to go on for at least a mile in the middle of nowhere. Rather than being draped it was more of a long line of bougainvileas growing next to each other, more of a long, wide pink ribbon.

Bougainvilleas are quite popular and successful as decorative garden plants here as well, but I've never seen them go wild.

@Hyacinthus: Hard to tell! :dunno:

Well, let me say that what may be a perfectly well behaved garden flower in one climate can easily turn into an aggressive pest somewhere else. I saw a plant very much like the one you show in your first picture just recently in Hawaii. And there it's a common pest! If I identify the plant in your second photo correctly, it's anise. Now that's a pest here! I'm not familiar with the plant in your third photo, but from the profuse seed it produces I'd say it's a pest.

And, having gone through this little exercise, I'm ready to declare all three of them WEEDS!

RafflesCity
September 27th, 2007, 03:03 PM
poor weeds....actually on their own I think they can be beautiful....in Singapore, one type of thing that sprouts easily are ferns, and they can really creep up on you! Ferns can really give a wild and prehistoric look to your garden.
