What do you mean exactly?

Exactly what I said. Instead of ordering buses from more established domestic companies like FAP-Priboj, NEOBUS-Novi Sad or IKARBUS-Zemun, they build their own...they are called "NIBUS"

it doenst look big enough or modern enough. needs revitilization and also gives the impression it's under a highway ramp. kind of gloomy enviornment. needs to birghten up with being either more on the outside or in a modern building, but one important thing is greenery. too much grey.

the only thing I agree about is the size, but I guess that too is in accordance to the demands for bus transportation in the country.

I find the setting and environment to be ultra urban. It is adjancted to the main railway station terminal and they are both under the elevated rail tracks (that's the thing that looks as a highway ramp) forming a complex and efficient transportation hub approximatively close to the center of the city (we should add to this that the future LRT of Skopje will also have a stop here + the suburban bus station has also been moved to a new terminal near this one).
There is absolutely no point to expand it to the outside cause the whole concept will not make sence anymore. I also don't see a point to put greenery there, it's just not meant to be that way. Do we see greenery on big highway junctions?! Some things are just meant to be raw concrete and grey. Maybe that concept doesn't look beautiful to some people (I personaly like it) but the whole complex is a very nice representative from the 70s style (it is designed by an Japanese architect and is very similar to Japanese stations constructed in the same period, I think Kobe has a very similar one).

And BTW on these pics U are only seeing the parking slots for the busses. The actual terminal is hard to be spotted on many of the pics cause of the big columns. Here are some older pics of the enterior I took a while ago, I might get some new ones soon of the whole place cause these are just around the exit to the parking slots.

lakerdar, you have to keep the concept of "hub" in mind when analizing the bus station. Perhaps you are not familiar with the big picture here... djurob explained a lot of stuff. I will just add some things.

1.For the size... IIRC it has 24 slots for departures and 8 for arivals, plus some auxiliary slots. I dont think it is huge but it definately not small. It was planned to meet the demand, not to be megalomanic.
2.It is not under a highway ramp, but under the main railway station Bridge. That thing is HUGE. It has 10 tracks located on a bridge 1,5km long and 110m wide (the wide part of the bridge is 700m long and represents the actual station). It is also 10+ meters high.
3.The actual terminal is new and it is very modern as you can see on djurob's pics.

Here is the bridge:

This is one of the intersections around the suburban bus station. Too much busses around the "Transport center" are clogging the intersections in the vicinity. There roads around the complex are barely coping with the traffic (especially since the suburban station was moved here) because not all the transport infrastructure has been built. In the future an urban freeway also on a bridge will pass parallel to the railway station and a huge interchange is planned just next to the concrete building in the background.

the railway termnial is craving for reconstruction. But I don't see anything happening there before the railway company gets back on track, before the railroad to Bulgaria is finished and before new fast trains are purchased to make it interesting for the wider population again.

the suburban bus terminal I think they should put more make up on it...

And it will get it, you just need time. Skopje's bus station is a lot nicer looking than Belgrade's , even if it is smaller.

By the way, just wondering...is there a bus schedule somewhere , to see how many buses depart daily from Skopje for places like Belgrade, Nis, Sofia, etc?

again I agree about the size... the original master plan from the 70s included a bigger bus station but things have changed from than.

1. Skopje was not even 25% of the population of Macedonia back in the 70s comparising to the cca 50% today. The population was much more dispersed around the country so there was more need for traveling.
2. In the 70s it was Yugoslavia and there were links to many smaller places around the country which vanished after the break up. Today there are only bus lines to the Macedonian towns (which are not more than 25 I think) and to the big cities of the region (Belgrade, Sarajevo, Sofia, Tirana, Thesalonki.....) and to some European cities (mostely German).

The only big rush is in the summertime with all the charter lines to the surrounding summer resorts.

All in all I think the size is realistic and reasonable. And I hope they put more accent on the railway than the bus transport. If they just establish a faster train line to Bitola for example (the current trip with a train to Bitola is I think 4.5 hours for a distance of some 150km which I'm sure can be cut to 1 hour or less) I'm sure the bus line will become obsolete (with a bus it is 2-2.5 hours probably).

oh and another thing we should consider is that there is no train line Skopje-Ohrid and that is a route that makes much of the buss traffic in the summers. I'm sure that will decrease after the introduction of the train line...

But to wrap it up the location where the station is build leaves space for expansion with new bus slots (the terminal itself is quite sufficient). So if there is need I'm sure it will get expanded.

@KM there is no web site unfortentaly... I don't know about other places but connections with Belgrade are quite good. There are some 3-4 business lines that go directly Skopje-Belgrade (it's a fast ride 5.5-6 hours inlcuding the border and all which is good for a bus) and there are some regular busses that stop along the way. All these lines are on daily bases.

Dont listen to djurob, he's obviously too lazy to search

There are quite a lot of scheduals around the web but you can find them yourself easily.

However I found the official bus station site. They dont have a classic schedual but you can choose the destination and the period for wich you are interested and you get results. I checked for Belgrade and you have 14 buses daily! I didnt know there are so much busses between Skopje and Belgrade. When you add the the trains and the few daily flights... and ofcourse people that use private vehicles... I must say I'm very surprised about the amount of traffic between the two cities.

good stuff realek. i've noticed something with the houses in Skopje (maybe in all of Macedonia?) and also Kosovo that building's have a sloped roof instead of a flat roof. really dangerous to have a roof on top of a 20 floor building. what if it has to be repaired, someone will fall. it must be a yugo thing or maybe local architecture?

for Skopje I'd say the main reason is the extra profit. the last floor under the sloped roof is legally not considered a floor but a "subroof" as we call it. This means that if the height limit at a location is for example 6 stories they can either makea building with 6 storeis and a flat roof or 6 stories + the "subroof". Guess what option is everyone choosing. On the top of it if I remember good the communal taxes for the "subroof" are like small or nonexistant at least this is how it used to be a while ago maybe that changed. So it's bascially a loophole in the legislative that everyone uses in order to make more money. If U got a building with let's say 300m useful surface area of the basis of the building, the "subroof" easily creates extra let's say 300.000EUR to the value of the building.

but it probably has something to do with the local architecture too. For these big ass appartment blocks, they are typical for all ex YU, they are templates that U can find in most bigger YU cities.

@ Lakerdar

AFAIK this kind of roof has a lot of advantages, for example it easily gets rid of the water during rain or after melting of snow/ice.
About the risk of somebody falling during repairs I must say Im not familliar with fixing roofs, but I never heard of such an accident here.

^^what djurob says makes the most sense. either way i like the architecture of it because i can easily recognize a building that is in Macedonia from looking at that.

realek, what you say makes sense however eventually the roof will have to be resurfaced (i dont know much about this so i may be wrong). lets just say i dont want to be the guy doing that.

Ok my friends, here is another stack of ordinary panoramic pics of Skopje. Some of the pics show nice parts of the city, some show ugly industrial parts, but I decided to post them all :D
Unfortunatelly I had to deal with a shitty weather conditions again, so the quality is not that good. I cant wait for the spring...

Pretty impressive that construction near Rasadnik, I didn't realize they are building so much there, reminds me of the new 'reonski centar' in Lisice.

And 'Zelezara' looks mighty :)

Quite a bit of construction in the background. Anyone care to explain more?

Nothing special, just ordinary residentials and mixed residential/comercial buildings. Part of the construction frenzy in a part of the city called Kisela Voda. The ones you ask about are located in a part of something we call Rasadnik (probably you know what this means). This rasadnik was used for researching seeds and other agricultural research AFAIK. I guess they are planning to relocate it now.

Here you can see the area under construction

good spotting BL....

on the 2nd picture it's a new building for one private university. to give U better orientation as U relatively learned Skopje it's opposite of the new Mercedes showroom accross the bridge that comes from the boulevard that divides the areas Aerodrom and Novo Lisice.

on the 9th picture it's probably a church cause I know there is a church U/C in this area (Aerodrom) but I haven't checked it out.

and university is that the american one?

nope this is Evropski Univerzitet (http://www.eurm.edu.mk/) it's Macedonian owned.

Which American one are U refering to? U have one that it's peaking on the 8th picture U can notice there a big banner for it. This one is called American college. It's Macedonian owned.

And than U got New York College which has a big ass american style campus (from what I know I haven't checked it out) in the western suburb of Saraj. This one is Greek owned it's actually a chain they got them in Athens, Thesaloniki and some other places as well (I think Prague being among them). It's called New York cause it offers the same curiculums as New York State University with lots of visiting professors from there and stuff.

The other two have their names just to sound "cool" altough it's so lame and predictible IMO.

Because unfortunately too many peasants flooded the city in the last 4 decades and they still think they live in a village and its the same as parking their tractor in the field...

My personal opinion: its the old part of skopje that looks the best... i dont know how u call it: but right beside the big square, where some embacies are, and where there a lot of cafes by the river (if i remember correctly).... Rest of Skopje needs a lot of renovation, a kind of makeover plan for the city......
Skopje has very good infrastructure though, wich is very good organized and can handle pretty heavy traffic.. :)

could you guys post some more pics of the "old" part by the square????

I like them they're nice but it's not like I worship them. It's just so fucking hard to find normal pictures of Skopje on the net that I have to be repetative often. Well yeah there are always new pics of the central area but I think that's a bit boring to repost all the time....

As for the panorama. I'm sure U spotted the 2-3 markers I did. The residentials near the Neokom building on the left together with the chiney of the toplana. And the "воените кули" on the center-right :)

nice pics. I dont know why people always call older apartments in EE "commie blocks"... look at the older "commie blocks" in italy and spain, they are hell ugliar than any old apartment in EE. These arnt "commine blocks" they are just the way apartments were built, even in the west back then.

Realek

The ones I branded as commieblocks (on that pic) are fairly new. They were build from the early 80's onwards. But they are commieblocks nevertheless. I dont find commieblocks ugly (well most of them), and those in that picture you mention are actually pretty good looking. Both separately and the whole residential cluster.

Yeah, you can find "commie blocks" everywhere even though they aren't built by commies. They are unified buildings built so that everyone can afford a place there and nobody envies the neighbor hence the name commie blocks. I like them too, I guess because buildings close to each other in Skopje nowadays are built in sooo many different ways that it looks ugly. Sometimes a little unification can be nice, I seriously hate when I see a white-blue building next to a pink-red one.

Not only the appearance, but they were certainly built to higher standards than most of today's urban mafia creations.

Actually when someone says "commie block" here in Macedonia we think of those pre-90s buildings which all look the same and are arranged in a strict order. In other words they reflect the communist mentality. That's why I said that commie = communist.
I've seen beautiful blocks of residential buildings with expensive apartments and nobody calls THEM "commie blocks".

yeah but it's better on foot. it's very limited while U drive, U can't shoot the pedestrial zones where there is more movement of people, U can't focus on details, the angles are limited, the bird crap on the windshield is unavoidable, if U slow down for a minute to take a pic some maniac honks and screams behind U.... it was quite stresfull... next time I'm going on foot.

actually much of the architecure is experimental and from a professional architectural viewpoint exciting it just comes from a different age, particulary 70s and 80s. Some objects in the city are true masterpieces from that period. The concept however is often not perceived well by the 'regular eye'. But the lack of full implementation of the masterplan contributes to that to a huge extent.

SkaNdErBeG
April 19th, 2007, 05:57 AM

Just like the case with Prishtina i think Skopje was the wrong city to be named capital.
Approximity to Kosovo, lack of historical significance, poor urban development... etc
That also applies to Prishtina in exactly the same order.

no man the parliament is build in the 30s. I'm talking about many brutalist concrete based projects. The university campus, the railways station, the GTC (the city mall) which is a absolute masterpiece for the time it was build etc. Not the mention the briliant urban planning by world renown Japanese architect Kenzo Tange who is the author of the Skopje masterplan which is in force even today.

Kenzo Tange (丹下健三, Tange Kenzō; September 4, 1913 - March 22, 2005) was a Japanese architect, and winner of the 1987 Pritzker Prize for architecture. He was one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, combining traditional Japanese styles with modernism, and designed major buildings on five continents.

this is not a thread about Prishtina, but I have to correct you, even though i agree that prishtina shouldn't been the capital as it is an artificial creation.

Before the commie urban planning of Prishtina, read here about the rich cultural heritage of Prishtina that has been destroyed in order to give room for the commie-blocks: http://www.esiweb.org/index.php?lang=en&id=165 , scroll down and you will find a list of 426 some of them ancient monuments that today doesnt exist...

And about the urban planning, the plan was very modern for Prishtina at that time, but remember that it was planned for 250 000 people, not for 500/600 000 like there are today, an explosion after the war

- What is the historical significance of Skopje for macedonians or Macedonia?:dunno:
Whatever it may be, it couldnt be compared to the importance of cities like Bitola and Ohrid.
Of course perhaps the key reason Skopje was named the capital (geographical reason) is to keep it away from any future bulgarian agression after it was seized from them during World War 2.

- Poor Urban Development prior to becoming the capital. Skopje experienced its rapid growth after World War 2 when it became the capital.

Skopje was a perfect city for a capital in my opinion.
I would not have wanted to see Ohrid or Bitola become capital because they would have lost their character and style, better that they preserve all of that by being their own towns. Skopje has people from all over Macedonia (as in the geographical term), and from other countries, it has lost its character in a way, but i guess it also developed a new one being the capital.

- ahhhh OK in that regard I agree, Bitola would be the apsolute champ. Skopje was quite important for us through history but when it was established as a capital Bitola was a far better city (BTW Skopje became the capital of Vardarska banovina in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia pre WW2). They still hate us for that today :D

- OK I understand what U mean. But U are wrong, the urban planning had a breakthrough since around 1900 with the last Turkish ruler who was in charge of Skopje (keep forgetting his name too lazy to look up). He introduced urban planning to the city and contributet with some major projects, most important IMO being the old segment of the city park which is the most beautiful part of the park even today. Under the Serbs the first urban masterplan for the city was created and many important objects were erected and the skeleton of todays inner city was outlined. The after earquake era took the city to another level quatrupling its population (altough it was planned for much less people). Anyways by the time of WW2, Skopje was already kicking Bitolas ass. Ohrid is a nice town but it was never in compatition for being a capital.

I disagree. Skopje has a fluid character like any other big city. Bitola and Ohrid have a provincial character (I don't mean this in a bad way) which is maintained and preserved. Those are two very different concepts I prefer the Skopje one.

Prishtina was an artificial creation, its approximity to Serbia favored of course the serbs to keep the city under their political and economical control.
Prishtina itself has absolutely no historical significance to albanians.

Archeological findings dont suggest anything in the sphere of the city's historical Urban Planification.
It was merely an ancient settlement which later developed into an urban jungle as it's evident in the city's urban complexion.

True, but in the case of Prishtina however, the reason to make it Capital was rather political. You couldnt have chosen a worst city in Kosovo and make it a Capital.
I hope once Independence is achieved they should seriously reconsider moving the Capital to Prizren.
It pisses me off but the fact of the matter is that Prishtina is propably the "ugliest" capital city in the Balkans and this is unacceptable.
Prizren would be a perfect location as the future capital of the Republic of Kosovo.

you're all ignoring the fact that since all our capitals do not have an ancient history (except for skopje which i assume is not well preserved) we have nothing limiting our imagination and height. old cities can have their museum look as there are some that want that. the new cities do not have those type of boundaries so we can create much more than we would be capable of.

Yes Prishtina looks awful, and very brutal too..and as we stated, it was an artificial political creation... However, even though it lacks historical significance, i think it has potential to become a very nice MODERN city... it has no restrictions because of history, and it has a lot of space..

I wouldnt want Prizren to become the capital, exactly because of its charm and cultural heritage..it could have been damaged/destroyed if it became the capital...The cultural/historical heritage is best kept the way it is now..

zdravo i na tebe drugar :)

it goes something like this...

For chilling out, U've picked the perfect time of the year. U'll find plenty if pleasant outdoor cafes in the pedestrian zones around the main square, in particular street Makedonia and the river quay 13 Noemvri behind the GTC (Gradski trgovski centar). I can't single out a place from the bunch it's just cozy to sit outside at this time of the year.

Pretty much the only urban historical core that has survived the '63 quake is the old turkish bazaar with the fortress on the other side of the main square. The place is quite nice altough you'll face poor hygiene... If you are into historical stuff don't forget to visit

- Kapan an
- Suli an
- Kursumli an
- Bezisten
- Daut pasin amam
- St. Spas church
- Mustafa pasha mosque
- Kale fortress

If U're a museum type of guy I'd reccomend the Museum of Macedonia which is also in the old bazaar and is a nice experiance.

Don't forget to have a beer at the top of Arka hotel, which offers a nice view at the old bazaar.

Have Ur friends drive U up the Vodno mountain to have a view at the city at night (and at day but night is a priority). This is a must IMO.

Restaurants... If Ur a meat lover my personal reccomendation is Ljuc (which is a dump but has the best liver and ribs), Toto where pretty much everything is nice... or tell Ur buddies to take U to one of the restaurants in Debar Maalo as they bring a kinda authentic Skopje restaurant vibe... food is also nice... In the center U have nice italian, spanish, chinese etc restaurants.... U won't have a problem with that.

As for night life it depends what U want... It's kinda of a transitional period where the winter places are getting too hot and the summer places are not opened yet. If U give us Ur preference for that I might list U some places though. Perhaps a place with a live gig or something.

For scattered landmarks go to check out the church in Nerezi. For natural beauty I reccomend Matka and Kozjak which are both very close to the city.
The city park is pretty good as well.

Bulgarians are usaully not fans of Roma people but many people find the Roma settlement of Sutka attractive in a weird way. I doubt U'd be interested in that though.

this is all that comes on my mind at the moment if U got any extra of specific questions shoot...

EDIT: The road from Deve bair is nice, just try to respect the speed limits as the cops are more eager than usuall lately... And don't worry about the numberplates, nothing can happen to U. Many of the Macedonians who took Bulgarian passports have cars registred in Bulgaria as well (as it's cheaper to buy second hand cars there and the registration fees are cheaper) so that's an extra reason why noone will look at U weird...

Make sure you get your friends to take you up to Vodno, particularly during the night! You'll get a beautiful view of the city all lit up.

Also, i don't know what night life scene you are into to, but tell your friends to take you to this underground club called 'balet' pronounced just like that. It's a very trendy, cool place that plays a lot of alternative music, i really liked it.

We got the strongest rakia of course as all the other Balkanians :D... For this combination U mention the Debar Maalo restaurants are definately a good option. Open air, in between lots of green, often having traditional music with some drunk midaged man jumping up and starting dancing in the middle of the street and throwing lots of money at the band... Well then you'll have to be wary of the balet place Turnovec:p

A traditional restaurant...one i recommend that i think you will definitely like is called 'nacional', it's just opposite the gradski trgovski centar and it's a really really classy place to eat and has traditional food as well other foods too...if you get the opportunity to go there, make sure you ask if you can sit down stairs because that's where you'll want to be, it's very nice.

Yes St. Spas is where Goce Delchev is buried, in the court yard, visit that, and enter the church to admire the carved wood icons, they're a real jewel.

I presume it is safe to park you car with BG number plates in Skopje...one of my cousins bought her car from Bulgaria (hence has BG number plates) and she hasn't had any problems that i know of so you should be fine.

Have a look at this guy

Sounds very nice. actually i am coming to Skopje because i was invied to a engagement party :) My friends will be busy for some of the time and if they don't take me that Debar Maalo i will steal some hours and stroll around :) Still i like that Roma style music on the video , but i will be amased to hear some actually old traditional macedonian tunes. I think my friends call it chalgishka or something like that (nothing in common with our chalga of course ;) ).

dude don't have a single worry, U will see that the "anti-bulgarian" feelings are just a bunch of media pumped bullshit, I'm sure U won't face any hostilities. Of course I presume U ain't gonna walk aroud with a t-shirt with San Stefano Bulgaria map on it . And again don't worry about the car it definately won't stick out from the bunch. Plus Macedonia car thieves mostly aim at luxtury vehicles so U have no problem. Just find a decent place to park so some idiot driver doesn't rip off your side rearview mirror... Parking are getting narrower and narrower and many drivers are complete idiots.

That's actually my point of view too :) , just needed to ask though. All this imaginary bulgarian-macedonian conflict is just media pumped bullshit and exists only in the heads of the guys with San Stefano or if existing, United Macedonia t-shirts. I don't have a San Stefano t-shirt in my wardrode and probably will never have one. I only think that we must teach some Bulgarians that it is OK for Macedonians to be Macedonians and teach some Macedonians that it is OK if once they were not different from the Bulgarians and that after all for the future we all must live in peace and friendship.

Well then you'll have to be wary of the balet place Turnovec:p

dejan , i actually like such kind of places. Even my favourite pub in my home town - Veliko Tarnovo seems to be the same as the description you wrote about balet. Still for the last 1-2 years the place where i liked to go most of all started to fill with more and more of the local english colonists and i started to feel like i am not home but abroad. :) And after all that kind of places you could probably see all across the world , but the traditional ones are something which is one of a time experience.

I'm actually on a similar frequency as U guys I just dislike this partcular place Balet for some reason, I disliked its predecessor Flok as well...

My personall recoomendation for a place with live rock gigs would be Castro, which is in the new railway station. However, as I said, it's getting damn hot and closed places really die out in Skopje during summertime. U may also wanna check out Custom pub as they got live gigs too, but it's a more commercial place.

it's a disruption of a pedestrian zone Renco. They drawn them a couple of weeks ago or so, before it was just 2 pedestrian crossings on the edges. I pesonally dislike how its done it aint aesthetic.

:okay: Great shots Martinche :) Did you have a good time in Skopje?

Well generally i had great time ... Food was good , rakija was good, music too . No language anderstanding problems at all . The reastaurant where i was and the people there in the first day made me really feel like i am at home with some really good friends. :)

Still there were a few exceptions in the evening and the other day that made me quite an impression. I don't wanna revive the old discussion that spoiled some other thread but i wanna metnion some facts that were really shocking for me. I watched the eurovision final together with a bunch of 20-25 young macedonians and it really surprised me that most of them were supporting and were more interested in the serbian song perticipating in the contest then their own beauty Karolina Goceva ... Still the biggest surprise was when they showed the studio in Sofia on the tv and all of them started to boo and show profound dislike even before the girl opened her mouth to speak.:ohno: That was really shocking for me as just before that i assured some guys that Macedonia will receive the maximum 12 points from us ... well, we gave you 10 but still it was the second choice for all bulgarians... Generally i felt there is some kind of pregidies towards bulgarians and that fact is something i do not understand ... i really don't.

It was also surprising to find out that food and drinks in the restaurants are probably twice more expensive then the same in Bulgaria. Same was with the hotels . I slept in a small villa-hotel in Vodno , and the price was such that i suppose you could sleep for the same money if not in Sheraton in Sofia then at least in some 4 star Hotel anywhere around Bulgaria...

Anynway , time spent in Skopie was really good, the skara in the Zabara restaurant near Vardar was great! I hope i will soon have the chance to visit some other places there , especially Ohrid ... i would really like to go there.

Interesting observations. I don't know what else to say either.

As to the higher prices, this explains the why the purchasing power in Bulgaria is different.

I guess you just love that neighborhood... :) Not to mention the MT building which appears so frequently in your posts

A suggestion for you - consider numbering your pics, so one can comment on them without having to repost them. Also useful to notice if some pics are not appearing (happens often)
