The old airport (replaced in April 2003) in Bintulu, a coastal town in Sarawak, Malaysia was only a doorstep away from town and this fact was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the town sited nearest to an airport. One can literally step out of the plane and walk right into the main street.
When I travelled there frequently about a decade ago, I would check-in an hour before my flight and then take a three-minute walk back to my hotel for a rest. I only checked out of the hotel fifteen minutes before my flight. :)

I guess you could consider Minneapolis-Saint Paul International to be close to the CBD. It's not that long of a drive if you know which roads to take, especially from Minneapolis.

But still there is rather plenty of space for massive expansions.

Hamburg's Airport is ca. 8km away from the city centre, but there is no space left for big expansions, because the airport is embedded in the built-up northern neighbourhoods of Hamburg.

Pisa Airport is just 1km away from the central station. The built-up area of Pisa borders the airport.

Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), it is like 7 km from downtown. But SAN, it closer to Downtown than TIJ, but when you are arriving to SAN you can have a beautiful view of San Diego skyline and Coronado Island, too.

SDfan
October 11th, 2006, 05:58 AM
So as mentioned before SAN (San Diego International Airport) is about 2 miles northwest of Downtown San Diego. It is so close that when you fly into the airport you are actually going over the downtown community of Little Italy.

Heres a view from the left side of the plane coming in over downtown:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c24/SDfan12/airshotdt.jpg

Heres a view of the airport in the foreground and downtown in the background:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c24/SDfan12/IMG_0428copy.jpg

Unfortunetly this view comes at a price. As in, the FAA mandated 500 foot height limit on all structures, including ground to sea level.

That mean that if you're 30 feet above sea level, you're height limit is 470 feet...So that just makes us skyscraper fans in San Diego a bit upset...

Like a few people have said before me - the approach into San Diego International is amazing! You get so, so close to the buildings it is unbelievable. And even though there is a height restriction, the skyline is really impressive to fly over.

It's my favourite approach to any airport I've ever been to.

Reagan National Airport

Its very close to the US Federal Buildings in Washington DC such as the White House, The Capitol, Supreme Court, etc. You have a very good close view of The Pentagon when you land. But the airway is highly protected, getting a permit is very hard and you will be shut down if you enter illegally.

London City Airport is very close to the centre, here's a picture on final approach. LCY has the steepest approach angle of any airport in the world (5.5 degrees instead of the normal 3 degrees).

Heathrow Airport is about 15 miles (24km) west of the centre, but here's a picture anyway. The skyline is visible on the horizon to the left of the picture.

Boston: less than 3 km from the terminal building to the CBD.

I'm surprised Washington National is still open after 9/11. Any aircraft approaching is less than a minute from the White House. They may indeed be shot down but a lot of people will die on the ground as a consequence.
