this is a nice tower....will they want to make it a race to 2000ft with Chicago...?

The status of this building is still APP while CS is already U/C

So i believe CS will win by a bit

So there was no ceremony today, but since there is a big progress on the site, for example they started to assemble their digging machine(not sure how to call it properly), it is possible that they decided not to held official ceremony at all and start construction without it.

well CS has all the chances to be finished first - the building is MUCH smaller in cross-section. it's just would they want to rush it... I've heard that market isn't too good at the moment in Chicago for that sort of property. So question will they go all steam ahead and then think what to do with it, or try to sense the market...
It is also unclear how long shall it take for Russia Tower to get really going - I mean to get to above ground floors, although it was mentioned that it is going to be built with TopDown method meaning that it will simultaneously grow up and down from ground level.
But it is really great to see all that equipment on the site. There was a lot of anxiety when construction didn't start on June 12th - national day as was advertised earlier... Some believe new start date - Day of Moscow (September 1st this year) will no hold either... but amazingly it did, and absolutely quiet without any pomp or ceremony. I personally think it is a great mistake! Would Mirax built it they would milk it to the last drop of publicity!

Some information.

The company that is currently working on the plot is working on preparations. Preparation works includes plot clearance, ground aligning, construction of wall in ground and preparation to official ceremony, which is unofficially could happen on 17th September, according to security.

No this machine is not excavator and i do not think that "excavate" is a proper verb for what it does:)

This is how it looks when assembled:

Out of EVERY structure that I have seen either proposed, or under construction, this tower is my favorite design.. And they are smart to put the obs deck at the top.. this building will be the "signature" icon tower of Moscow when its done, just like the Burj Dubai is within Dubai... Chicago Spire is a cool design, but there is no obs deck there.. I like the Russia Tower design better than that anyway...

Ive mentioned this in the Burj Dubai thread, and everybody simply whines about there being no floor space that high up in the Burj while just the central core alone towards the top is still around 4000-5000 sq ft..

Has anybody ever been to the top of the Empire State Building?? I mean the top deck that you have to pay extra to get to (on the 102nd floor).. now thats small! But how many thousands of tourists are still able to go up there?!?

If you base your opinion of a building off of whether or not it has an observatory, you're really letting the tail wag the dog, aren't you? Relax, learn to enjoy architecture for architecture, and height for height. Expecting developers to want to put a public deck on their own building is awfully pretentious, isn't it?

^^ you didnt fully read my post, did you?? I said "My favorite design."
I like how the structure has a graceful, pyramid like frame that terminates off to a nice crown at the top. I really like the external cross bracing elements as well that actually show part of the superstructure that is holding this beast together; Im a sucker for that.. This bit I added in about the obs decks is just to reinforce my opinion..
just my 2 cents...

if this Moscow tower didnt have an obs deck, it would still be my favorite design.. but the obs deck makes it that much better.. I have a much better liking for these monstrosities getting built, when there is a way for everybody to enjoy them, and not just the ultra uber rich multi-millionares..

after all, Moscow tower will be the signature tower of Moscow, just as the Chicago Spire will be the new signature tower of Chicago, as the Burj will be the new icon of Dubai. Because of that reason alone, it would be pretty nice to have some sort of public viewing area, and they will pull in a LOT of money with these decks..

Earthquakes are very rare. Magnitude is mostly 2—3, up to 4. Almost all earthquakes are echoes, for example from Carpat mountains, Romaina. Strong earthquakes were never registered in history.
http://seismos-u.ifz.ru/images/predict_vranch.gif
All buildings should be constructed for magnitudes 5 (according to the Russian construction standards — 'SNiP' — construction standards and rules).

Here it goes:

MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov laid a symbolic foundation stone at the building site of the 'Russia Tower' in central Moscow Tuesday.

The construction of the 612-meter pyramid-like tower, with a total area of 470 square meters (5,000 square feet), is due to be completed by 2012. The tower is set to become Europe's highest building.

The Russia Tower, located in Moscow City, the Russian capital's new business center, will contain shopping centers, offices, hotels and apartments.

"This building will be unique in both size and architecture," Luzhkov said, adding that it will become "a symbol of Russia."

"We will not stop here," added Luzhkov. "We are, essentially, in the process of constructing a new city."

The tower was designed by the British architect Norman Foster.

Groundbreaking for Foster + Partners’ super-high tower in Moscow

Today’s groundbreaking of Foster + Partners’ Russia Tower – the tallest building in Europe – has been marked at a ceremony attended by Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow, and members of the Moscow Government. Set to be a striking new addition to the dynamic high-rise skyline of Moscow City, its unique form will be visible landmark from the heart of Moscow.

The building continues the practice’s investigation into the nature of the tower, taking structural, functional, environmental and urban logic to a new dimension. The mixed-use project incorporates apartments, hotel, office and leisure space and will have an ‘energy cycle’ that pioneers sustainable architecture and reinforces the economic and social vitality of Moscow City.

Russia Tower is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction[1] in Moscow International Business Center, Moscow, Russia. Building planned to be completed in 2012 and reach height of 612 meters (2,008 feet). In a time of completition it may be the tallest building in Europe and second tallest in the world.

The total area of the structure will cover 520,000 square meters (128.5 acres), of which 38% (200,000 sq m/49 acres) will be located underground. The tower will contain 118 floors, 101 elevators, underground parking to accommodate 3680 automobiles. The first floor will be used for commercial shops. The building will be able to hold 30,000 people simultaneously. Construction began on 18 September 2007, when the building's foundation stone was laid down in an official groundbreaking ceremony.

History of the project

Originally, The Russia Tower was proposed for plots 2 and 3 of the Moscow International Business Center in 1994 as the world's tallest building; a 648 meter (2,126 feet), 125-story tower. It was designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. It was soon moved to plot 14. In the middle of 2003 an updated, 648 meter (2,126 feet), 134-story, design had been moved to plots 17 and 18. In January 2004, the Moscow Development Company (STT Group) has been appointed as the main investor and developer of a $2-billion[2] project.

This can make any sense if we will ignore the structure of the MIBC. There will be new city square (alternative to the Red square), very big shopping center, theater and cinema multiplex and possibly an aqua-park. People will come there.

The lack of residents makes many of these commercial center sterile. Chicago and New York have vibrant downtown communities that allow for supertall building to be better integrated within a community. Just remember Brasilia.

Thanks - never seen the staggered secant walls before.
Looks like dirt, not rock or clay, this would make sense for the big machine on site to be larger version of this ( used for slurry walls in Chicago ).

That is only applicable if only RT is standing side by side with western Federation tower. However from that pics it is obviously some distance behind Western tower, hence making it slightly too high.

RT is going to be situated very close to Federation=) Just across the road.
The distance is like between Federation and Naberezhnaya Tower on this pic.

But I have to agree with him... Most of the buildings look quite cheesy (except the Russia and the Federation tower/s). Would be sad if it's going to look that way, a bit like Dubai in Europe.
Here and there somewhat more simplicity in the design of the towers would work well for a better impression. Just my opinion, Moscow should do how it want to. But that way I wouldn't ever call it the best skyline of Europe.

If someone is bothered so much with "cultural architecture identity" he should not be discussing skyscrapers, because skyscrapers mostly represent international architechture. I just hate such people, every time skyscraper is planned outsude north america they start moaning how it have no connection to local culture, blah-blah, etc.

I noticed that people in the international sections have problems understanding this simple concept...

I'm sure u will be happy to do a better one for us?

And anyway, they don't all have to look too much alike. U guys (in the States) have different kinds of towers too. Or how well do u think Trump World tower matches to Chrysler building?

I'm sure some of u (Americans mostly?) are just jaleous of Moscow because it's constructing such beautiful and tall towers. I know skyscrapers were invented in US and so on, but geez, not all of them have to get build to there to look great. I bet my ass that if this tower was going to be built to US, there would be a lot more people praising this.

I live in the US (Los Angeles, CA) and I can tell you that this is my favorite one being built right now, and one of the best designs I have ever seen. Im praising the shit out of this development.. I like it even more than the Burj, which is also awesome.. Of course there are going to be "haters" when it comes to this because this is one striking design and people will be jealous of this.. I like how the designer emphasized the pyramid like triangular design, as well as the triangles and diagrid look to the facade.. it re-defines "sleek." Ive said it before in the thread and Ill say it again, this tower has a chance to beat the Burj (and CN) as far as having the highest observation deck, and I hope they take it.. I would love to visit Moscow one day to see this monstrosity in its full beauty! Hopefully Americans wont be even more hated in that general region by the time this is done and I can visit!

This bullshit about the buildings looking drastically different than each other with varying shapes... well, what? should they all be boxes and look alike? This is 2007 (and going on 2008 soon). We are NOT in the 1930's anymore!!

As for the recent render, I appreciate whoever spent the time to make that render even if it needs more refinement because it still more than gives a great indicator of what the skyline will look like for the most part (and that was clearly all that was intended for). If anyone can do any better, than lets see you do that!

The quality of individual buildins was poor, the main purpose was to show where the skyscrapers will be built a what their hights will be.
In Europe many cities (London, Paris, Stanbul, Warsaw, etc) have nice renders with future look of the cities. In Moscow we don't have a decent similar render. Nobody dares to make it ...

In short, the diversification of different architectures is now the new trend and may last for a very long while. Good thing Chicago found that out. New York still got some learning to do.
