Bangkok opens much-delayed air hub

POSTED: 10:16 p.m. EDT, September 27, 2006

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Thousands of departing and arriving passengers christened Bangkok's new international airport as it officially opened Thursday with all commercial airlines transferring operations to the sleek new hub.

Flights stopped landing at the old, overcrowded Don Muang airport on Wednesday night.

The full transfer of passenger flights from Don Muang to the airy, expansive Suvarnabhumi Airport was completed at 3 a.m. Thursday (2000 GMT Wednesday), more than four decades after the project was originally conceived in 1960.

Built on an area known as "Cobra Swamp," Suvarnabhumi was crippled by everything from corruption scandals and a deadly fire to the military coup that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on September 19.

Thaksin, who turned up the pressure to complete the airport -- built in four and a half years, all during Thaksin's reign -- heralded Suvarnabhumi as one of his administration's crowning achievements.

Surprisingly, the military takeover did not delay or significantly impact the airport's opening. The military assigned 800 troops to the airport for 90 days to support the transfer and help with troubleshooting.

Several army canine units were deployed at the passenger terminal to inspect suspicious packages. Suvarnabhumi -- a name conferred by the Thai king pronounced "sue-wanna-poom," which means "Golden Land" -- is a little over 30 kilometers (about 20 miles) east of Bangkok in a 563,000-square-meter (6 million-square-foot) H-shaped building.

The new airport is capable of handling 76 flights per hour and 45 million passengers per year. Suvarnabhumi is constructed of steel, concrete and lots of glass that lets in natural light while keeping out the tropical heat.

The oval-shaped concourse corridors are roofed by glass and white fabric panels. A 28-kilometer (17-mile) rail link under construction will connect the airport with mass transit trains in central Bangkok and is scheduled for completion in November 2007.

Baggage hiccups mar Bangkok airport opening

By Ed Cropley

Updated: 3:02 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2006
BANGKOK, Sept. - Thailand's new $4 billion international airport won a thumbs up from most passengers on its first day of operation on Thursday, although teething problems with the baggage handling system led to some delays.

"It appears there weren't enough carts to carry the luggage from the plane," said Hemant Chattopadhyay, an IT professional from Bangalore in India who had to wait 2-½ hours before being reunited with his bags.

Others complained about a lack of signs to the baggage halls, although by-and-large the massive complex, which will be able to handle 45 million passengers a year when it hits top gear, appeared to have swung into action smoothly.

"The signs weren't very clear and so we had some problems finding the baggage hall and kept on getting lost," said 19-year-old South African backpacker, Gerald Neves. "Eventually they had to let us through some secret door."

"Still they were all very friendly and we got an unofficial tour of the place," he said, with a shrug of the shoulders.

Some 200 bags got lost in the fully-automated baggage system long enough to miss their onward flights, Thai Airways officials said.

Delays in getting baggage to arriving passengers were blamed on the slow transfer of loading equipment across a rainswept city from Don Muang airport, which closed in the early hours of Thursday.

"Now they are using a semi-manual system," said Thai Airways president Apinan Sumaneseni, referring to the scores of army cadets assisting with the luggage.

For Bernard Ashford, a British pensioner on a two-week package holiday, it was plain sailing through an airport billed as a serious rival to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

If every phase of its planned expansion comes to fruition, it will be the largest airport in Asia.

"No problems at all," Ashford said. "We've got everything we set out with."

"GOLDEN LAND"

In the cavernous steel-and-glass departure hall of Suvarnabhumi -- "Golden Land" in Thai -- check-in queues moved steadily, although some passengers were overawed by the size of the world-record 563,000 sq m (6.06 million sq ft) terminal.

"It's just such a big space it made me feel uneasy," said M.S. Mukti, returning to her native Bangladesh after a four-day conference in Bangkok.

With 12 million tourists a year visiting Thailand and aspirations to being a regional trading and meeting centre, successive governments in Bangkok had deemed a replacement for its ageing, single-runway Don Muang airport necessary.

However, it is 40 years since plans for a new airport in "Cobra Swamp", 25 km (15 miles) east of Bangkok, were first drawn up.

Delayed by a succession of military coups and the 1997 Asian financial crisis, it finally came into being under the administration of billionaire Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Ironically, following another military coup last week, Thaksin will only be able to enjoy his pet project from his daughter's flat in London, where he is now living in virtual exile.

If and when he ever returns to Thailand, he is likely to be impressed.

"It looks really nice and checking in was very smooth," said Ron Kirschnick, an American businessman who will not miss the tatty arrival halls of Don Muang, now mothballed.

"Overall, I'd give it a nine or 10 out of 10," he said.

Thailand opens huge new airport

Thousands of passengers have passed through Thailand's new international airport on its opening day.
Despite fears of initial problems, correspondents say the first day seems to be going smoothly, although there are some delays in baggage-handling.

Suvarnabhumi airport was first planned 45 years ago, and completed by recently ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra.

Mr Thaksin was not present at the opening. He is in London, having been overthrown in last week's coup.

Thailand hopes its new airport will boost the country's vital tourist industry, and make Bangkok a regional transport centre to rival Hong Kong and Singapore.

The $4bn airport, the largest in South East Asia, is capable of handling 76 flights per hour and 45 million passengers per year.

The airport boasts the largest passenger terminal in the world
The opening of Suvarnabhumi has been fraught with delays and political interference since it was first planned.

It was an important project for Mr Thaksin's administration, but it was blighted by allegations of corruption during its construction, and claims that it was being opened before it was ready.

There were fears that last week's coup would lead to further delays in opening of the new building.

But the coup leaders were quick to back the airport, which was designed by the architect Helmut Jahn, and the change of government appears to have had little impact on the airport's first day.

Despite some delays in handing baggage, no major problems were reported.

By 0900 (0300 GMT) more than 100 flights had landed and taken off successfully.

"For the first day, it's pretty good. I thought there would be a lot more confusion," Australian tourist Stephen Gordon told the Associated Press.

Suvarnabhumi - which means Golden Land - is about 30km (20 miles) east of Bangkok.

A 28km (17 mile) rail link to connect the airport with central Bangkok is scheduled for completion in November 2007.

Thailand's airport authority says the new building boasts the world's largest single terminal building, at 563,000 sq m, as well as the tallest control tower.

GOODBYE DON MUANG

Suvarnabhumi opens today
First flight due at 4.10am, but roofs still leak at airport

The new Suvarnabhumi airport was set to open for full commercial operations at 3am today, amid constant hammering due to the construction of unfinished airport outlets and leaks in the roof. Hours before the official opening there were piles of construction materials and dirty glass windows in the modern building.

Facilities at the airport terminal and a high-speed Internet and phone booth were not functioning.

Earlier on Monday, a Thai Airways International passenger flying back from the South complained that only one water tap in a toilet was running.

The heavily-promoted duty free shop was also not entirely completed.

However, Suvarnabhumi Airport general manager Somchai Sawasdeepon, after inspecting the whole airport, declared it was ready to serve passengers from around the world.

He admitted some roofs were still leaking but said workers had already been ordered to repair them. He expected the problem would not affect the airport service. The luggage conveyor was out of order earlier, but technicians had already fixed it, he said.

Airport officials admitted that part of the decoration work might not be done in time, while Airports of Thailand (AoT) chairman Srisook Chandrangsu said the decoration of some airline offices would not be completed by today.

Despite the problems, AoT executives were set to welcome the first international flight to arrive at the airport at 4.10am this morning.

The first passenger flight, of Ukrainian Aerosvit Airlines, was due to fly into Suvarnabhumi from Kiev at 4.10am. The aircraft was then to turn around and be the first passenger plane to take off from the new airport, going back to Kiev at 5.40am.

After the commercial opening, Mr Srisook said, there could be some flight delays and some passengers might get lost in the huge terminal, but the problems were expected to disappear in two weeks.

Meanwhile, Privy Councillor Surayud Chulanont, chairman of the council of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology at Lat Krabang, asked AoT to help solve problems with noise, vibration and magnetic waves from the airport, which he said would disturb teaching and learning at the institute.

''We need to modify some of the classrooms and buildings to keep the impacts at acceptable levels. The cost [of modifications] has been initially estimated at 214 million baht,'' he said.

Bangkok's New $4.1 Billion Airport Opens for Flights

By Beth Jinks and Anuchit Nguyen

Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi airport, built on the reclaimed Cobra Swamp, opened today to full domestic and international traffic, with 800 soldiers on hand to sort and lug baggage when systems fail.

Some flights were delayed and luggage was lost or misplaced when the airport was forced to use manual sorting in place of some automated processes at the new 155 billion baht ($4.1 billion) airport, Thai Airways International Pcl President Apinan Sumanaseni told reporters.

A record 40 million passengers will use Bangkok airport in the next 12 months, and the numbers may rise as tourists shrug off last week's bloodless military coup. The junta, which ousted the government of billionaire Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sept. 19, stuck to the former government's schedule for the airport opening.

``The automatic system for baggage handling, especially for departing flights, is not functioning,'' Apinan said. ``They are using their hands to differentiate baggage for each flight.'' The problem may get worse as the number of flights increases in the evening, when planes depart to Europe, he said.

Chalit Pukbhasuk, Thailand's Air Force chief and a deputy leader of the junta, told reporters yesterday the facility was ``100 percent ready'' during a final inspection.

Lingering Concerns

Airlines expressed concerns about insufficient power supplies, lengthy baggage systems, fire-damaged catering centers and unfinished airline lounges before today's opening. The soldiers will be stationed at the facility for three months ``just in case they're needed'' for luggage handling, Chalit said.

Thai Air, the country's biggest airline which operates an average of 270 flights through Bangkok daily, had delays of up to 45 minutes for 17 of its first 19 takeoffs today, and 200 suitcases remained ``stuck at the airport'' Apinan told reporters today.

Baggage system failures plagued airports in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur during their openings. In Hong Kong, cargo delays also resulted in a backlog and damaged perishables.

``We are working to reduce the number of baggage losses and loading delays,'' Wanchai Sarathulthat, permanent secretary at the transport ministry, told reporters today. ``We've added staff in the baggage rooms to work by hand.''

The Real Test

Suvarnabhumi, pronounced ``soo-wan-na-poom'', means Golden Land and was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in January 2002.

``We lost two of our seven suitcases, and there are a number of people in our tour group who've also lost their luggage,'' said Rakesh Shett, product manager at an Indian pharmaceutical company, after he arrived on a Thai Air flight from Mumbai. ``We are praying that we will get them back.''

Suvarnabhumi has been handling some domestic flights since earlier this month to test systems, with 155 takeoffs and landings yesterday. Today will it deal with the full contingent of 813 flights - the real test - according to Somchai Sawasdeepon, general manager of Suvarnabhumi.

As the first international passenger flight arrived from Kiev at 4:30 a.m. workers were still installing equipment and finishing off fittings, as duty free store clerks unwrapped merchandise and hung signs. Most airline lounges won't be ready until next year, said Chotisak Asapaviriya, president of Airports of Thailand Pcl, which operates Suvarnabhumi.

More Signs

Airports of Thailand will provide more signs and English- speaking staff after passengers complained of trouble navigating the airport, Wanchai said.

The junta decided to open the facility on Thaksin's deadline, as airlines have already adjusted schedules for the transition. Carriers including Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. worked for months to be ready to move operations to the new airport.

``Too much was at stake to pull out of the opening so they had to go ahead,'' said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

First conceived in 1960 and built from a 1994 design, Suvarnabhumi may fill its 45 million capacity in its first year, according to Airports of Thailand Pcl, which operates Suvarnabhumi.

Construction Site

``It looks like the airport will be full from day one,'' Derek Sadubin, general manager at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation said in an interview today. ``The authorities will have to think about expanding the airport and there could be a construction site for some years to come.''

The new facility is more than five times the size of Don Muang, and is capable of handling the Airbus SAS A380, the world's biggest commercial plane. A new satellite terminal to boost its capacity is scheduled for completion in 2010.

After a farewell ceremony, 92-year-old Don Muang sent off its last commercial flights last night and will be used by only private aircraft and charter flights from today.

The new airport is also needed to boost exports -- particularly of fresh produce like seafood and fruit -- by providing better warehousing and refrigerated airfreight capacity, Chotisak told a seminar on Sept. 12.

``A bunch of fish and frogs have died at Don Muang before they got to dinner tables overseas,'' Chotisak said. ``At Suvarnabhumi, those fish and frogs won't die any more.''

Thai official pleads with sightseers to stop visiting Bangkok's new airport
2 October 2006

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Litter is piling up in the bathrooms at Bangkok's sleek new international airport. There aren't enough toilets and there's too much picnicking going on. The root of the problem? Too many sightseers.

On top of the 80,000-90,000 travelers passing through Suvarnabhumi Airport each day, more than 100,000 Thais are visiting and snapping souvenir pictures at the new airport, which opened Thursday, said Chotisak Asapaviriya, president of Airports of Thailand.

"So many people are coming for sightseeing, and we're pleading with them to stop. There are too many," Chotisak said. "There aren't enough bathrooms. People are complaining that there's litter all over the bathrooms. They're eating here and there, parking their cars in a mess."

He said the sightseers were coming in droves, in pickup trucks, bringing packed lunches to eat at Suvarnabhumi as they take pictures inside the modern, airy building.

As a result, Suvarnabhumi -- built to hold 45 million passengers per year -- has been inundated with people who have no travel plans at all.

"I don't want to chase them out because this is public property, and we're all excited about it, but it has made it difficult to work," Chotisak said in a telephone interview.

Airports of Thailand had welcomed visitors to Suvarnabhumi prior to its opening so that travelers could figure out where it was and not get lost en route to the facility once it opened. But Chotisak said the visiting period was now over.

"Please don't come visit and take pictures," he said. "We built this (airport) to accommodate travelers."

"We invited (visitors) so that they could familiarize themselves with the new airport, but now it's no longer familiarization -- it has become a picnic."

Yep. in fact, the scene is from Hindu mythology, and is called "Churning of the Oceans."

Thats Shiva in the center, and the Gods and Demons are on either side, churning for the elixer.

Noise pollution pay-out for neighbours of new Thai airport

BANGKOK, Oct 6, 2006 (AFP) - Residents living near Bangkok's new international airport will get compensation for noise pollution and could be re-homed away from the roar of jets, airport officials said Friday.

Somchai Sawasdeepon, general manager of the new Suvarnabhumi airport, said that officials met on Thursday and agreed to allocate a sum of the airport's development budget to compensate 200 households living near the airport.

They also endorsed a sum of 214 million baht (5.7 million dollars) compensation for King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, which has complained about the roar of overhead planes.

"A certain amount will be paid for residents nearby the airport to relieve the immediate impact noise has caused them," Somchai told AFP.

"We are also considering another amount to buy properties for those who cannot bear the noise pollution and want to move away from the new airport."

Airports of Thailand (AoT) has hired the National Institute of Development Administration to conduct a study on noise pollution caused by air traffic in and out of Suvarnabhumi. The study will be completed by the end of this month.

"Nearby residents where the noise exceeds 75 decibels are considered 'significantly affected'," AoT's president Chotisak Aspaviriya told AFP.

"Those, of which the number is less than 100, would be priority to get compensation, especially if they want to move out from their current homes."

Thailand's pollution control department says that noise above 70 decibels can lead to premature hearing loss and urged residents living near the runways to move.

"Noise exceeding that standard level must be avoided," an official at the department said, on condition of anonymity.

"We have suggested that those living about one kilometre (0.6 miles) away from the runways, where the effects are significant, move out of their existing homes," the official told AFP.

Located 3.5 kilometres (two miles) from Suvarnabhumi, the King Mongkut Institute said that 14,000 students had been affected since the new airport opened on September 28.

Five residents living near the new airport have already filed complaints to the police to speed up the compensation claims.

"Those residents have been in contact with the airport officials, but so far the process of giving compensation is very slow," said a police officer at Lad Krabang police station in Bangkok.

Suvarnabhumi or 'Golden Land' airport, 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of the Thai capital, has a capacity of 45 million passengers a year, beating regional rivals in Singapore and Malaysia. The airport can handle up to 76 flights per hour.

Food on the fly
While it may be stuck in the middle of nowhere, passengers and visitors at Suvarnabhumi Airport need not worry about finding a decent place to eat

STORY BY VANNIYA SRIANGURA, PHOTOS BY ANUSORN SAKSEREE

Thanks to the Thai sanook attitude, the new airport has unintentionally become the city's newest and, of course, biggest recreational site. While the airport terminal lures crowds of curious, fun-loving visitors who want to check out the modern facilities, departing Boeings grab people's attention just like spaceships blasting off. And the airport's futuristically designed building itself has become a favourite backdrop for streetside picnics for many locals.

Situated some 30 kilometres to the east from downtown Bangkok, the one-week-old Suvarnabhumi Airport that sprawls across 20,000 rai may be what we should to get to know better. With concerns like where to eat and what to do while there, totally unprepared passengers may expect a muddled start to their trip. But that should never encourage any of us to visit the airport for leisure, unless you are a passenger.

From its ritzy "international" interior to its plethora of global brands, the 15 - billion-baht-invested Suvarnabhumi is definitely inspired by overseas airports, making it hard to distinguish it from other big city airports. But look on the other side and keep your mind open, the good thing is that Suvarnabhumi is trying to offer what Don Muang lacked and perhaps that means an international flavour and diversity.

Perhaps you can say that Don Muang didn't need such things. Just a stone's throw from the parked airbuses are shopping centres, restaurants and markets. But here in the middle of nowhere, where would a passenger at Suvarnabhumi go for food, especially with the potential of a delayed departure? Well, that's one thing they'll never have to worry about.

Rest assured, dining is one of the selling points at Suvarnabhumi. Gone are Don Muang's humdrum dining atmosphere and odds-and-ends snack bars. Sophisticated sports bars, trendy restaurants and world-class gastronomy are what Suvarnabhumi features proudly. And if you want to dodge the crowds of visitors or are looking for a four-star hotel service, just step away from the airport terminal and walk through the parking lot, and you'll find the Novotel Suvarnabhumi where more dining choices await.

As I'm writing this, I'm also keeping my fingers crossed. The Airport Authority, who recently came out and asked people not to use Suvarnabhumi as a sightseeing ground, has claimed that every flaw will be corrected by the end of this month - and that should include its smelly toilets problem, too. Otherwise, my dining tip for people coming to the new airport would be, "Don't eat or drink too much."

Fascinating numbers, sufficient choices and, perhaps, mundane flavours

Some 50 dining venues dot the 25,000-square-metre airport terminal. While more than 30 of them offer comfortable seating areas, only half a dozen are proper dining restaurants.

Here, the dining business is well-planned and restaurants are carefully selected according to the preferences of the clientele and the destinations they are flying to. For example, the eastern concourses (A, B, C and the east side of D), with gates occupied by Japan Airlines and Thai Airways, house several Asian eateries, while the western concourses (E, F and the west side of D) offer more European-style cuisine because that's where the gates to Europe and the US are situated. And while most shopping stores close at midnight, all dining venues operate 24 hours.

Proper restaurants

Departing passengers can have gastronomical pleasure from Kinramen located on the far left side of concourse D. With Japanese noodle dishes - ramen, udon and soba (150-250 baht) - as its highlight items, the restaurant also offers a wide variety of choices including rice with various toppings, several sushi selections as well as a kids' menu and desserts. Spare some room for refreshments, too - Kinramen features an irresistable list of smoothies. Try ginger, raspberry or kiwi smoothie - they are very delicious.

Run by the same management as Kinramen is Asian Corner which is situated just across the hallway. The place looks like an Asian buffet joint with selections from every cuisine of the region ranging from Thai som tum, Chinese dim sum and Vietnamese spring rolls to Japanese lunch boxes and Korean BBQ. Prices range from 80 to 180 baht. More like a bite-and-go eatery, you may expect less comfort seating here than at Kinramen.

At the other end of the terminal lies Mango Tree, a Thai restaurant managed by Coca restaurant group. This is its sixth branch following Bangkok, London, Tokyo, Korea and Malaysia. Best-selling dishes include pad thai noodle, fried prawn with tamarind sauce and noodle soup with roast duck. While they tasted ordinarily good, their prices are extraordinarily high - expect to pay 170 baht for a duck noodle dish.

Opposite Mango Tree is Volare. Unfortunately, the day that we visited the place it was still under construction. Nearby at concourse F there are The Traveller: Pizza & More and The Traveller: Sports Cafe & Bar. Both restaurants looked appealing but were quiet and empty. We decided to sample a couple of slices of pizza and spaghetti carbonara but found them only so-so.

Fastfood joints

Other than international brands like Burger King, Dairy Queen and Siamese pizza chain The Pizza Company, there are several other venues where you can grab a quick meal before your flight.

However, some of the places offer what you may only consider as a stomach-filler rather than a palate-pleaser. Chow and Haru seemed to serve up quick Chinese dishes served by scoop, while Pitcher and Plane is more of a sandwich corner, and the mini food-court-likeBillion Zone is the place where you may find a porkballs noodle stall among a few other stalls.

Wine bars and lounges

Along concourse D are what Don Muang never had. Four stylish looking bars dot the middle of the 500-metre-long hallway. Managed by the Accor hotel group, Reef Bar, Glass Bar, Light Bar and Seafood Bar are places where business travellers can enjoy good wine and champagne while relishing oysters and other seafood. In the morning the bars offer breakfast but from 11am onward they feature more substantial fare.

Snack and deli corners, coffee shops, juice bars and ice cream parlours

Caffeine-addicted travellers will never feel drowsy thanks to these coffee joints. Proudly representing Thailand are local favourite homegrown brands Caffe Nero by Black Canyon, Doi Tung Coffee and Coffee World, among others.

There's also the world's most popular cafe, Starbucks and the British high quality tea and bakery shop Whittard of Chelsea.

For ice cream fans and kids, Iberry and The Cream & Fudge Factory are where you can enjoy wide varieties of fruit sorbet as well as counter-fried ice cream - that's what Bangkok teenagers currently cherish.

The Miracle by Louis' Tavern, Bakery Chic and Cafe de Suvarnabhumi are among several other places to be checked out.

Main terminal

Featuring more than a dozen eating venues, the main terminal is an open area where non-passenger are allowed. Among the well known restaurants are Tate Cafe by Le Notre, S&P, Daily Suki, Lee Cafe and China Town. Yet, as long as the new airport remains popular among meddlesome locals, the main terminal is just a hectic ground with packed restaurants.

Dining is one of the new airport's highlight features with a range of sophisticated sports bars, trendy restaurants and world-class gastronomy available.

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/452/061006rt01zy9.jpg

With long quests and scarce seating, the fast food joints at the airport might not provide quicker and more convenient service than the proper restaurants.

While several eateries offer palate-pleasers, some serve what you may only consider as a stomach-filler.

Bangkok's new airport to beef up security

BANGKOK, Oct 13, 2006 (AFP) - Bangkok's new international airport, which opened three weeks ago, will install an additional 200 closed-circuit cameras to beef up security against terror attacks, an official said Friday.

Transport Minister Thira Haocharoen, who was sworn in Monday as part of a military-backed government after last month's coup, made the announcement after inspecting security operations at Suvarnabhumi airport.

"Amid global fears over terror attacks, we found security checks at Suvarnabhumi airport were not strict enough," said Chaisak Angsuwan, director-general of the aviation department at the Transportation Ministry.

"For example, if visitors wear police or government uniforms, they can enter restricted areas without being checked thoroughly. We must enforce strict ID checks to make sure no terrorists can mingle with airport staff," he said.

The airport, located 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Bangkok, already has thousands of security officials and 700 closed-circuit cameras.

Suvarnabhumi, which means "Golden Land" in the Thai language, operates 24 hours a day and has an annual passenger capacity of 45 million.

The airport replaced the creaking Don Muang, which had handled about 37 million passengers per year -- two million more than it was designed for.

In April last year, suspected Islamic militants bombed Thailand's Hat Yai airport in the Muslim-majority restive south, killing two people.

THAI Requests Passengers to Check-In to International Flights 3 Hours in Advance

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited requests the assistance of passengers flying out of Suvarnabhumi Airport, to check-in 3 hours in advance for international and domestic flights, in order to decrease traffic jams routed to and from the airport.

Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, THAI’s President, said that following the official opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport on 28 September 2006, there have been several people coming out to the airport who are both passengers and observing public, both inside and outside the airport terminal area. This has resulted in traffic congestion on the roads within the airport area. Therefore, the company requests the assistance of passengers traveling both THAI's international and domestic flights to check-in 3 hours before actual departure time

Passengers flying with THAI may check-in to flights at SuvarnabhumiAirporton the 4th Floor, as follows:

Gate 1: Passengers flying Royal First Class and Royal Silk Class for international flights may check-in at Counter Rows A and B
Gate 2: Passengers flying Royal Silk Class and Economy Class for domestic flights may check-in at Counter Row C
Gate 4: Passengers flying Economy Class for international flights may check-in at Counter Rows H and J

Authorities consider airport expansion

(dpa) - The Department of Aviation is looking to expand Bangkok's newly opened Suvarnabhumi International Airport to accommodate the rapid growth of passenger traffic, the head of the department said Monday.

Less than a month after its September 28 opening, Suvarnabhumi is nearing full capacity and the expansion is needed because of a projected 10 per cent growth per year in traffic, Department of Aviation Director-General Chaisak Angkasuwan said.

Some international carriers have applied to increase their number of flights from the end of October when the high tourist season starts, Chaisak told reporters.

He said he will suggest the responsible government agencies speed up the feasibility study to build a new passenger terminal for low-cost carriers and a third runway.

Four runways are eventually planned for Suvarnabhumi and the need for them is the major reason the city's airport was moved from Don Muang, where there was no space for expansion.

Meanwhile, Thai Airways International (THAI) should have all the problems plagueing the move to Suvarnabhumi resolved by early November, THAI President Apinan Sumanaseni said Sunday.

The national flag carrier, which operates more than 200 flights a day at Suvarnabhumi, has made steady progress dealing with the problems, particularly glitches with the baggage handling system, he said.

Thai budget carriers want to move back to old airport

BANGKOK, Oct 18, 2006 (AFP) - Thailand's low-cost carriers said Wednesday they want to move their operations back to Bangkok's old airport, citing increased costs at the capital's new international airport.

"The new airport is getting busy with more traffic, while our operation costs are rising," said Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer of budget airline Thai Air Asia.

"Consequently, every low-cost airline would like to discuss the possibility with airport officials of moving back to Don Muang," he told AFP.

The new three-billion-dollar Suvarnabhumi airport officially opened to much fanfare less than three weeks ago, replacing the creaking Don Muang airport.

Suvarnabhumi, or "golden land", airport is expected to handle 38 million passengers in its first year, rising to 45 million passengers per year in the future.

Airport officials have already announced plans to build a 16-million-dollar terminal to cater to budget carriers within 16 months. They are still debating possible uses for decades-old Don Muang airport.

"We have to listen to the reasons why low cost airlines want to move back to Don Muang, but so far they have not started official discussions about this issue," Chaisak Angkasuwan, director general of the government's aviation department, told AFP.

"The final decision will be based on the economic value if we operate two separate airports -- Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi -- at the same time."

Chaisak recently urged Airports of Thailand (AOT), which operates Suvarnabhumi, to think about expanding the new airport in response to an expected jump in traffic over the next five years.

AOT president Chotisak Asapaviriya said he did not understand why the budget airlines wanted to move back to Don Muang, and said operating costs for low cost carriers were unlikely to rise at the new airport.

The only price hike, he said, was a 15-percent increase in landing fees, which will take effect in April 2007.

He said AOT will hold a meeting Friday with airlines to discuss the problem.

"The new airport could serve up to 45 million passengers yearly. I have not seen any reason to say that it is getting too crowded at the moment," Chotisak added.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 250 carriers but has no low-cost members, urged authorities to use only one airport.

"A single airport is best in terms of passenger convenience, and is also the most cost-efficient use of AOT's resources," said Albert Tjoeng, IATA's spokesman based in Singapore.

Surging traffic puts Bangkok ahead of Hong Kong and Singapore
source: Bkk Post

Air traffic through Bangkok grew robustly in the first nine months of the year as tourism rebounded from the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami and budget carriers continued to proliferate.

The number of travellers passing through Bangkok rose to 31.46 million from January to September, a 10.76% increase from the same period in 2005, underscoring the capital's position as a major air hub of Asia.

The increased traffic has helped Bangkok top rivals Hong Kong and Singapore in the world rankings for the busiest airport, according to the latest statistics from Airports Council International (ACI), a Geneva-based coalition of nearly 1,100 airports.

Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) was the world's 12th busiest airport through the first five months of the year, up from 18th last year.

Hong Kong International Airport moved up two spots to 14th in the rankings, while Singapore Changi International Airport finished 24th from January to May.

Industry analysts said the traffic through Bangkok could have been higher if the congested Don Muang had more room to handle greater demand.

The 92-year-old airport, which closed on Sept 28, handled around 39 million passengers last year _ almost 10 million beyond its designed capacity.

The new Suvarnabhumi Airport can accommodate 45 million passengers, but industry groups expect that figure to be reached quickly.

The combined air traffic for this year is projected at 43.4 million passengers, an 11.5% increase on 2005, according to AoT.

That means AoT must start to expand Suvarnabhumi faster than previously anticipated to meet demand, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and aviation experts.

To relieve the expected congestion at Suvarnabhumi, AoT plans to build an 800-million-baht passenger terminal for low-budget airlines that would divert up to 15 million passengers a year from the main terminal.

The no-frills structure is expected to be operational by early 2008.

Even so, AoT has not held serious talks about the original plan to expand by building a more refined mid-field terminal, a third runway and supporting facilities that would raise the airport's capacity to 54 million by 2011.

In the first nine months of the year, the number of international travellers moving through Don Muang rose 10.68% percent year-on-year to reach 23.16 million, while domestic passengers grew 11% to 8.30 million.

The total number of flights coming in and out of Bangkok in the first nine months of the year increased 5.16% to 208,553 compared to the same period last year, according to AoT figures. The company projects a total of 280,000 flights for the year.

The number of international flights in the first nine months rose 2.62% to 134,700, while domestic air traffic jumped 10.12% in that time to reach 13,842.

Domestic traffic continued to be stimulated by low-cost carriers, which have benefited the most from the tourism recovery. Budget aircraft accounted for about a third of domestic flights.

Cargo moving through Don Muang edged up 6.26% in the nine-month period to 937,306 tonnes, comprising 893,585 tonnes for international (up 6.46%) and 43,721 tonnes domestic (up 2.33%).

Bangkok had more passengers than Hong Kong a few years ago when SARS devastated the travel industry. I'm not surprised that Bangkok has overtaken Hong Kong. The Thai tourism industry is very powerful in the region. I expect more frequencies and passenger traffic to come, and perhaps even some stopovers for the kangaroo route. It'll be very attractive to advertise to Europeans a few days in Thailand to break their long flight to Australia.

Jetstar expects fast growth in Thai business
source: The Nation

Jetstar Airways, Australia's budget carrier, has forecast that its Thai market will grow threefold within the next three years, with its annual passenger numbers reaching 540,000.

The airline is operating three Phuket-Sydney flights a week, and is scheduled to start a thrice-weekly Bangkok-Melbourne service on November 23.

Jetstar expects to handle 180,000 passengers on its Thai routes this year, which it sees climbing to 540,000 in three years.

Chief executive officer Alan Joyce said the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport would be the key factor in achieving the projected passenger numbers. The low-cost terminal being studied for Suvarnabhumi would also boost business.

He said the overall number of flyers using low-cost carriers in Thailand could reach 7 million next year.

"The opening of the new airport here is beneficial for our business and the aviation industry as a whole," said Joyce.

The airline was the first foreign airline to land at Suvarnabhumi during yesterday's soft opening of the airport, operating a flight with 160 passengers.

Joyce added that the airline planned to use Bangkok as part of its network expansion. The carrier is likely to link Bangkok with new destinations such as Nagoya in Japan, which Jetstar is set to service in middle of next year. It also plans to fly to Burma soon, probably from Singapore.

Jetstar sees Bangkok as the gateway to Europe in the longer term, by 2010, once new aircraft are delivered.

Jetstar - 100-per-cent owned by Australia's Qantas - is currently offering "Pre-Holiday Specials" to Thailand for a limited period, with bookings to be made by tomorrow.

Jetstar is offering special one-way fares of Bt7,795 on its Bangkok-Melbourne and Phuket-Sydney routes, inclusive of airline surcharges, fees and government taxes (but excluding Bangkok departure tax).

"This offer is a good buy and is in anticipation of the approaching school break in October and the longer Christmas holidays in December," said Joyce.

"These flights will provide an opportunity for Thai holiday-goers and even business people to experience seamless flying, at the same time they will be given a chance to explore every aspect of the continent of Australia and what it has to offer."

Jetstar currently operates a fleet of 23 Airbus A320 aircraft. It is now in the process of upgrading its Air Operator Certificate to operate wide-bodied jet aircraft on international, long-haul routes. It proposes to operate an interim fleet of six-wide body A330-200s before transitioning to a fleet of 12 new Boeing 787 aircraft.

Jetstar's first B787 is scheduled for delivery in August, 2008. The carrier's launch destinations for its long-haul services from Australia include Bangkok, Phuket, Osaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Bali and Honolulu.

I think Bangkok's Airport is unique in its design and presentation. The uniformity/integrity does not always serve the charm, but rather the atmosphere that goes with the cultural fabric does.

The building is great but the floorings are kinda boring

Hitesh
November 8th, 2006, 12:01 PM
The flooring cools the terminal building through convection, facilitated by cool water running in pipes lay beneath the tiles. It is extremely energy efficient and sets a good example for other buildings around the world and in Thailand to copy.
What's so boring about that?
If you want to look at pretty floors, go to a temple. or walk outside to one of the two gardens beside the terminal

Suvarnabhumi Airport - The main passenger terminal building, with a capacity of handling 76 flight operations per hour, co-locates the international and domestic terminals, thou assigned to different parts of the concourse. In the initial phase of construction, it will be capable of handling 45 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of cargo per year. Above the future underground rail link station and in front of the passenger terminal building is a 600-room hotel operated by Accor Group under the Novotel brand. Between the airport hotel and the terminal building are the two 5-storey car parks with a combined capacity of 5,000 cars.

Long-term plans for four runways flanking two main terminals and two satellite buildings with a combined capacity capable of handling up to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo a year are on the drawing board. The second phase of airport expansion involving the construction of a satellite building south of the main terminal expansion is expected to begin 4 to 7 years after the completion of the first main terminal.

Overall, the services in the airport will be a spirit of perfect amity for passensgers' satisfying needs in the nearly future.

I agree with this.
East Asia: Beijing's new largest terminal will be busiest in East Asia.

Southeast Asia: Suvarnabhumi Airport will be definitely more important center hub than Hong Kong International Airport and Changi Airport (Singapore) because there are growing busiest flights in nearly future for sure.

This below picture, the phrase 2 is for low cost terminal. It is not sure that it is the final formal plans for expansion?? I believe this design is good idea for lower terminal expansion because domestic and low budget international airlines will be moving to the future terminal separate from the largest terminal 1. This will will help Suvarnabhumi airport better benefits for growing air traffic and busiest.

Current Layout Map
This new airport took over the old airport (Don Meung) that operation starts since September 28th, 2006. This airport has two runways.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3b/VTBS_layout.png

Future Layout Map
This second phrase is for concourse (low cow airlines) that will be built within 4 to 6 years later as possible. Also, third runway will be built 3 to 4 years later. In addition, I guess that the main third phrase will be for international concourse in a case if there would be growing traffic and more airlines stop over at the first main concourse. This phrase will be built in the nearly decade years or so on... It will have fourth runways in the future, too...

The map posted above has changed a little. the 2 satellite buildings will no longer form 2 '+' type shapes but instead will be 2 horizontal (east-west) lines. This is to facilitate more efficient aircraft movement.

They are not LCC terminals as suggested. The LCC terminal will be constructed north of concourse A. If there is a need for it, LCC terminal 2 will be constructed north of Concourse G.
Plans for the LCC terminals are just ideas at the moment and not finalised, considering there is a vast unused airport (Don Muang) in northern Bangkok.

BANGKOK: Flying into Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport, there's enough sparkle to ensure the terminal building lives up to its name, which means "golden land" in Thai.

But inside, passengers complain that the magnificent exterior is marred by grimy and inadequate bathrooms, long lines and crowded check-in counters.

"It has gotten dirty already - not only the toilets, but in general - even though it's brand new. It is poor maintenance," said American property manager Brian Hodde, pointing at rubbish on the floor in a restaurant he just left.

"From outside, it is very impressive. But when sitting here, it looks unfinished as you can see bare concrete ceiling and uncovered coils hanging at the top of the restaurant," the 44-year-old said.

The airport authority has said the bare walls are part of the building's modern design, but with construction still going on in parts of the terminal, the confusion is understandable.

And since the airport opened on September 28, complaints have poured in from passengers.

"I was approached by too many taxi drivers stopping me everywhere and asking aggressive questions," said 65-year-old Briton Peter Wood.

"It took me a very long time to walk from the aircraft to the immigration. It is not comfortable," Wood said after arriving from Phnom Penh.

Some of the most glaring problems have already been fixed. Computer glitches with the baggage system have been repaired, and signs in the terminal have been improved after complaints they were too confusing to navigate the long halls.

Airport of Thailand, which operates Suvarnabhumi, says it will spend 40 million baht (one million dollars) to add 200 toilets to address complaints about the restrooms being too few and too dirty.

But less visible problems remain - including cracks in the runways, noise pollution for the surrounding neighbourhoods, and allegations of sexual harassment of flight attendants.

AoT has pledged to spend one billion baht to improve security to address the complaints of flight attendants, who said they were groped and stalked by construction workers at the airport.

Compensation for the noise pollution is expected to cost seven billion baht so nearby residents can soundproof their homes or move away.

"There is a load of problems to be fixed," Air Chief Marshal Chalit Phukphasuk told the Bangkok Post newspaper, estimating it would take six months to address them all.

Deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup less than two weeks before the airport opened, had pushed to open the airport months before experts believed it would be ready.

But travel agents blame poor management rather than hurried construction for many of the problems, saying service at Suvarnabhumi still lags behind regional rivals like Hong Kong and Singapore.

"Speeding up the completion contributed to the havoc, but poor management since the opening is the main reason," said Suparerk Soorangura, Managing Director of NS Travel and Tours.

"The management was aware of the problems for some time but so far they have yet to fix them," Suparerk told AFP.

He noted that Hong Kong experienced far more serious problems with its cargo and gate systems when its new airport opened in 1998.

"Now, Hong Kong airport is perfect. Don't even think about Singapore's airport, which has been long established," he said.

"It will take some time for Thailand to improve our services to compete with those two hubs, even with the world-class facility we have now," said Suparerk, a former president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents.

AOT president Chotisak Asapaviriya told AFP that all the complaints were being taken into account and improvements were underway.

"We're handling over 100,000 passengers and 10 million bags every day, and the new airport is still perfecting its services," said Chotisak. - AFP/so

Suvarnabhumi named new airport of the year

Suvarnabhumi Airport was named the New Airport of the Year in the recent excellence awards staged by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), the Sydney-based aviation consultancy group.

The award recognised the impact it has on its market, and its role in the regional aviation development, though not necessarily its efficiency.

"Impressive operating statistics have been reported almost from Day 1, which promises to raise the competitive stakes among Asia's leading hub airports," said CAPA executive chairman Peter Harbison.

Why would we want to become like KL airport which is much much smaller than us? To me it is just like comparing London Heathrow and Cologne-Bonn airport.

We are now twice the size of KL airport in term of passengers traffic, let alone the number of airlines served, and we are now (2006 ACI data, see below) second in Asia only after Tokyo Haneda (but that was actually the data from the old Don Muang!!).

Air arrivals to Bangkok up nearly 16% through October

International arrivals by air at Bangkok, excluding Thai travellers, in the first 10 months of this year rose 15.97% year-on-year to 7.92 million, according to statistics compiled by the Immigration Bureau.

The top six countries of origin for visitors, in order, were Japan, China, South Korea, the UK, the US and Singapore.

The top three positions remained unchanged from last year. The UK remained the largest European market for visitors, with 540,401 arrivals, an increase of 7.96%.

Arrivals from Singapore fell by 4.36% over last year, perhaps as a result of fallout from the controversial sale of Shin Corp to the Singaporean company Temasek Holdings, which had prompted some anti-Singapore sentiment in Thailand.

Russia posted the largest increase of any country, with 99,247 arrivals in the same period, up 108% over the same period last year.

Southern unrest does not appear to have affected cross-border traffic with Malaysia, with arrivals rising 16.35%.

Thailand is becoming more popular not only with Europeans, but also with visitors from the Middle East. They are no longer keen to travel to the US or the UK in great numbers and feel more welcome in Asia.

The arrival figures from the Middle East rose 33.43%, with Saudi Arabia showing an increase of 86.47% and Egypt increasing 48.60%.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has projected overall foreign tourist arrivals will reach 13.5 million this year, against 11.52 million last year, which was down by 1.15% from the previous year.

The TAT expects foreign tourist arrivals in 2007 to increase to 14.8 million.

World's largest plane lands at world's newest airport

dpa German Press Agency
Published: Tuesday December 5, 2006

Bangkok- A test flight of Airbus' A380 superjumbo jet ended at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport Tuesday without a hitch, making it the 38th airport successfully tested by the world's largest aircraft. The test flight, carrying dummy passengers and five crew, landed a few minutes behind schedule, the Thai News Agency reported.

The A380 was flown to Bangkok as part of Airbus' ongoing sales negotiations with the national carrier, Thai Airways International, which has ordered six of the colossi, and to test its "compatibility" with Bangkok's new airport, Richard Carcaillet, Airbus' director of product marketing, said at a press conference.

Airbus was expecting the A380, its newest aircraft, which is capable of handling 555 passengers, to be certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency and US Federal Aviation Administration within a week, Carcaillet said.

Thus far, 166 A380s have been ordered worldwide, including six by Thai Airways, although that order is now under discussion after production delays and a change in government in Thailand in September.

Thai Airways planned to use the planes on its popular routes from Bangkok to Frankfurt, London and Paris.

Carcaillet said Monday that he was confident the delivery of six A380s to the airline by 2011 will be on time.

Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened on September 28 after several delays, is the world's newest airport and was built to accommodate the A380.

A380
SuperJumbo
arrives in Thailand

(Agencies)

Thailand today welcomed the A380 superjumbo on its first visit to the kingdom, a day after European plane maker Airbus promised no more delays in delivery of the aircraft.

The world's largest plane arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport at about 1:20 pm, and a group of 20 airline officials applauded as the 555-seat jumbo touched down at the new airport.

The A380, carrying 55 passengers and five crew, flew direct from Toulouse, France to Suvarnabhumi, and will leave Bangkok and return to France on Thursday.

The previously unscheduled trip is widely seen a move by Airbus to convince Thai Airways not to cancel its order for six planes after the flag carrier demanded compensation for the hold up.

Ian Thomas, an analyst at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation in Sydney, said that the trip was also important because Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened just over two months ago, was designed to accommodate the A380.

"Airbus is now in a position where it has to start realizing some of the potential that's offered by the aircraft,'' he said.

Bangkok was noticeably missing from the A380's globe-spanning test that wrapped up last week, although the plane stopped in several other Asian countries.

Airbus' director of product marketing, Richard Carcaillet, on Monday declined to comment on the negotiations with Thai Airways over possible compensation for the delays but insisted that Airbus would stick to the latest delivery schedule.

"We are very confident there will be no delay,'' he said. "Thai's delivery will be on time.''

Thai has ordered six of the A380s, with three now scheduled for delivery in 2011, delayed from 2009. No delivery date has been set for the remaining three aircraft.

If Thai canceled its order, it would be Airbus's first loss of a contract for the passenger version of the plane. Thai Airways president Apinan Sumanaseni said Saturday that the airline was in talks with Airbus on compensation for the delays.

Thai Airways had planned to use the superjumbos on some of its most popular routes, flying from Bangkok to Frankfurt, London and Tokyo.

Biggest commercial passenger plane
Airbus A380
lands in Bangkok

Published: December 5, 2006

BANGKOK, Thailand: The world's largest commercial passenger plane, the Airbus A380, touched down at Bangkok's new airport Tuesday, after an 11 hour, 35 minute flight from Toulouse, France, for its first trip to Thailand.

Airbus officials have said they expect the A380 to be certified as airworthy by the end of this year after the 555-seat plane completed its trial flights on Nov. 30.

During the trials, the plane traveled about 127,788 kilometers (69,000 nautical miles) in some 152 flight hours over 18 days, with stops at 10 airports in the Asia-Pacific region.

At Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi international airport, the A380 will be presented to officials from Thai Airways International and Airports of Thailand, Airbus said in a statement.

"Airport compatibility verification tests" will also be undertaken, it added.

Suvarnabhumi, which opened in September, has five gates capable of receiving A380s.

A spokesman for Thai Airways, which has ordered six A380s, said expansion plans envision an extra satellite gate specifically for the superjumbo.

Airbus has received 166 firm orders or commitments for the A380 from 15 airlines.

Singapore Airlines will be the first carrier to fly the superjumbo — it expects to receive its first A380 next October, a year later than initially planned. Other deliveries are expected to be delayed by an average of two years.

The technical trial flights in November took the A380 to Singapore, Seoul in South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan's Narita airport and Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai in China. It also undertook a round-the-world trip via both poles, with stops in South Africa, Australia and Canada.

"At each destination the A380 performed as expected, demonstrating that it can be turned around as per normal airline operations," Airbus said in its statement Tuesday.

The plane is scheduled to fly back to Toulouse on Thursday, it said.

World's largest plane lands at world's newest airport

Point of correction: The A380 Whalejet is NOT the "World's largest plane".
That honour belongs to the AN-225 Mriya (though the H-4 Spruce Goose had a larger wingspan); a cargo plane first flown in 1988.
The giant Airbus is more correctly the world's largest passenger airliner.

Airport no-housingzone grows to 10km
Move aims to solve aircraft noise pollution

AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

The no-housing zone surrounding Suvarnabhumi airport has been extended from a radius of eight to 10km as a long-term solution to aircraft noise pollution, Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said yesterday. Mr Sansern said the meeting on management of the airport vicinity, which he chaired, agreed yesterday that residents in the designated areas would be subject to expropriation, which would be carried out on a voluntary basis.

The exact area covered in a radius from the airport's centre and the number of affected homes had yet to be determined.

Mr Sansern said the announcement prohibiting housing within 8km of the airport had been in place since 1992 and reiterated on many occasions, but it had never been taken seriously. He said the aircraft noise since the opening of the airport had made areas in the vicinity unfit for residential purposes. Land prices have plunged by up to 80% as a result.

The meeting gave a working team, comprising transport permanent secretary Chaisawat Kittipornpaiboon, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) and related agencies, one to two months to work out a plan for commercial development of the areas in the no-housing zone. Maximum benefits and possible private participation in the development would be the aims of the plan.

The areas had a high potential to serve aviation-related activities, he said.

In the short run, those badly affected by aircraft noise and who could no longer stay in their homes would be relocated to about 100 housing units in the Lat Krabang-Romklao area that Airports of Thailand had arranged for their temporary stay, pending settlement.

Mr Sansern said talks are underway to sort out compensation and assistance for the first phase of expropriation _ 71 houses sitting on 29 rai of land north of Suvarnabhumi, where noise levels were measured at above 40 on the scale of the Noise Exposure Forecasts, considered a level dangerous to health. Compensation rates will vary according to the location and land price of each house, but total costs for this first batch would be capped at within the 389-million-baht budget the cabinet approved on Nov 14

Airport shortcomings 'will be fixed'

(TNA) – Five significant problems prevailing at Bangkok's new world leader Suvarnabhumi airport will be resolved urgently, Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said Sunday.

The five critical problem areas, according to Mr. Sansern, are

- noise pollution caused by aircraft landing and takeoff

- passenger terminal safety system

- slow freight handling and cost reduction

- mass transport for passengers

- improved area management of the airport vicinity where residents are experiencing inconvenience and various difficulties.

The deputy transport minister said the National Housing Authority is cooperating with the Airports of Thailand Pcl to provide additional staff and employee housing near the airport. He indicated that 60 rooms in Lat Krabang area apartments have been located, plus empty land on which more housing can be built.

Problems that need long-term solutions will be handled by the Ministry's permanent secretary in cooperation with the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), he said, adding that parking lot and logistics centres might be built on the northern and southern tiers of the airport. A feasibility study is expected to be complete in the next two months.

Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok's new international air transport centre, began full commercial service operations on September 28.
