View Full Version : The Largest Single Passenger Terminal Building

According to its website, the passenger terminal of the HKIA is the world's largest airport terminal building, with a total gross floor area of 570,000 m˛(it was 550,000 m˛ before the expansion of the East Hall). Despite claims from the owner of the new Bangkok airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport, that their new passenger terminal is the world's largest at 563,000 m˛. HKIA still maintains at number one with 570,000 m˛ when the airport authority completed expanding within the existing terminal in 2004 from 550,000 m˛ to make room for the greatly expanded shopping mall, SkyMart, which is 39,000 sq m itself, at the East Hall area. The 570,000 m˛ figure does not include the new 140,000 m˛ Passenger Terminal 2, SkyPlaza, that will be completed by the end of 2006.
The Cebuano Exultor October 3rd, 2006, 05:27 AM Yeah, Hong Kong International Airport's main terminal building does feel bigger than Suvarnabhumi's but the size-difference between the two is so minimal that hardly anyone will notice. And, imho, Suvarnabhumi's terminal is not yet as efficient as Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok's.
But, I would like to point out that the by late 2007, Beijing-Capital's Terminal 3 will dwarf both since it'll be nearly twice as large at one million square meters.
vincent October 3rd, 2006, 06:21 AM Terminal 3 got two terminals (three in the future). I am not sure you can consider that has "single terminal building" though.

very good point..

that's correct... i can say beijing's new terminal 3 is the largest airport terminal complex in the world, not the largest single terminal building...
vincent October 3rd, 2006, 08:21 PM yeah, it is definitely the world's largest passenger terminal building complex built in one single phase.

In this dramatic new airport terminal, the ceiling—rolling sine waves of bamboo-clad steel—is held up by brightly painted columns, and there's sunlight everywhere. Rogers's design is "reminiscent of a sailboat or a classic ship," the jury remarked. "There's a lightness to it—a buoyancy." From arrival halls to check-in, from security to departure, spaces are clearly organized and easy to navigate, unified by the soaring central corridor.

The building presents a straightforward linear diagram, in the form of a clear sequence of spectacular spaces for both departing and arriving passengers. The parallel linear floor planes are separated from each other by dramatic, light-filled canyons across which bridges span.
A restrained and functional approach is consistently applied to great effect, resulting in a visually clean, remarkably uncluttered and soothing environment.

A Terminal Building is separated from the car park by forecourts, which act as a transport exchange for buses, taxis, metro, trains and private vehicles. It will serve international flights and Shengen flights (flights within European Union countries). With nearly 500,000 sq m (distributed over six levels), it has 174 check-in counters, 38 stands for planes and airport walkways located in the boarding pier that measures 1.2 km.

I mean the single terminal building, not the total terminal building
ZZ-II October 14th, 2006, 04:40 PM wow, looking huge!!
zergcerebrates October 15th, 2006, 10:33 AM Madrid might have the title as having the largest airport and the largest overall terminal size, but Hong Kong's still claims the title as "THE WORLDS LARGEST SINGLE TERMINAL" Madrid has how many terminals? HK Terminal one already claimed that title not included the newly built T2.
Nivek October 16th, 2006, 10:41 AM HKIA is still my favourite airport, simple and not too complicated and it does feel bigger than the Bangkok new one
