Absolute rubbish. Really, the Saudi media is the worst in the world.

The plan is to redevelop the current airport, NOT build a new one. The current south terminal is getting temporary upgrades and expansion to cope while the new terminal complex is built.

The masterplan looks like this:

- A new midfield terminal complex is constructed between the east and central runways. It comprises a main terminal on the southern end and two sattelites north of it.

- New maintenance facilities in the north east part of the airport, north of the RSAF base.

- Current north terminal redeveloped into a general aviation terminal.

- Current south terminal, cargo terminal, maintenance zone, and parking aprons (the area between the north and south terminal), will be redeveloped into a cargo centre (absolutely huge!).

Of course not all of this will be done at once. In Phase one only the main terminal will be built. The sattelites will be added in later phases.

It is part of the MMRL open day presentation pack, so it talks about railway alignments in the airport, but it gives a good summary of the project.

Ahleen HiJazzy, being an aviation hobbiest, if you will, some media reporters absolutely know nothing or could care less about the actual truth about airplanes or airports. Some people classify planes as Airbus Boeings or maybe an Airbus 737 or a Boeing 320. Hmm?... anyway, I think the location of the present airport is perfect for Jeddah and land is readily avaiable--which further increases my speculation of the article.

Oh don't get me started on the local media, it's not just with aviation topics they mess up. All they can do is airy fairy brown nose waffle, you know the kind, his excellency said it will be a civil marvel, his royal highness cut the ribbon, it is the world leading, consultants from country x. But they do not care about the facts, sometimes even the basic facts are omitted. I mean I've read business articles in the Saudi press where I couldn't figure out what the project is about! Of course it's not just the press side that's the problem.

In this instance I also think there is another factor. The average person in Jeddah is probably adamant that only a new airport will do. It doesn't matter what the facts are, they want something new and shiny. It's an affliction that is quite prevalent in our region. We love clean sheet solutions, however impractical or illogical they are. We want new houses, new buildings, new airports, new seaports, new cities even. We don't want to hear about refurbishment, redevelopment, or regeneration.

هيئة الطيران والمالية تبحثان البدء في تحسين المطار

تبحث هيئة الطيران المدني مع وزارة المالية مشروع تحسين صالات مطار الملك عبدالعزيز في جدة ورصد المبالغ المالية الخاصة بالمشروع. وذكرت مصادر في الهيئة انها تدرس حاليا العروض المقدمة من بعض الشركات لاسيما وان المشروع سيكون نقلة كبيرة في تحسين كافة مرافق المطار وتغيير بعض آليات العمل مثل اجهزة الصوت وسيور العفش والكاونترات واقامة خراطيم تربط الصالات بالطائرة. ويتوقع ان يبدأ العمل في المشروع خلال شهر شوال المقبل.

قال صاحب السمو الملكي الامير مشعل بن ماجد محافظ جدة ان مشروع تطوير الصالات الحالية سيتم الانتهاء منه في غضون العام ونصف العام من الان. وامتدح محافظ جدة المشروع الضخم الذي تنفذه هيئة الطيران المدني والمزمع انشاؤه على جزءين بدءا بتجديد المطار الحالي والثاني يختص بانشاء مطار جديد جنوب الحالي وتم اعتماد المخطط الجديد، اما بالنسبة لربط طريق الامير ماجد معه فقد بدأت امانة جدة من خلال نزع الملكيات وتعويض المواطنين وسيتم ايصال الطريق بخط الليث جنوبا وبالمطار شمالا. واشار المهندس عبدالله رحيمي رئيس هيئة الطيران المدني الى انه تم الانتهاء من معظم مراحل المخطط الرئيسي ووضع التصاميم المناسبة. واضاف: وافق المقام السامي على المشروع وتم اعتماد 900 مليون ريال لانشاء المدارج الجديدة وفق المواصفات العالمية التي ستستقبل الطائرات العملاقة وتم ارساؤه على شركة محلية لافتا الى ان مشروع المطار الجديد سيقوم على ثلاث مراحل سيتم الانتهاء من المرحلة الاولى بعد 5 سنوات تقريبا. من جانبه قال المهندس طلال ساعاتي مدير المشروع العاجل لتحسين صالات جديدة بأن البدء الفعلي للتطوير سيكون في بداية شعبان الحالي حيث سيتم رفع الطاقة التشغيلية للصالات الحالية وستقدم الشركات عروضها السبت القادم لاختيار المناسب منها. نافيا ان يتسبب المشروع بتخفيض الطاقة التشغيلية للمطار قائلا بأنه تم توجيه المقاول بايقاف العمل داخل الصالات خلال اوقات الذروة طوال العام فيما سيتم انشاء 6 بوابات جديدة ملاصقة للصالات 3 منها في الصالة الجنوبية برفع مساحتها بـ 2000 متر مربع و 4 في الصالة الشمالية والتي ستشهد مساحتها زيادة بمقدار 1400 متر مربع. جاء ذلك خلال زيارة الامير مشعل بن ماجد للاطلاع على مشاريع تطوير مطار الملك عبدالعزيز حيث استمع لشرح وافٍ من الادارة الهندسية المسؤولة عن المشروع التي اشارت في عرض مرئي بالبروجيكتر الى ان هنالك 3 مراحل لانشاء المطار: الاولى تؤمن لاستيعاب 30 مليون مسافر سنويا والثانية60 مليون مسافر سنويا والثالثة 80 مليون مسافر. وشاهد سمو الامير مشروع القطار السريع الذي يأتي عبر طريق الامير ماجد ليتوقف امام الصالة الرئيسية للمطار وينحني باتجاه الشرق حيث يلتف على الصالات الثلاث ليصل الى مبنى الحجاج واقترح سموه بشق نفق من تحت الصالات وإيصاله عبرها مثل ما هو معمول به في المطارات العالمية.

قال المهندس عبدالله رحيمي رئيس الهيئة العامة للطيران المدني انه تم الانتهاء من إعداد وثائق المنافسة على مشروع تطوير مطار الملك عبدالعزيز الدولي، في وقت تم فيه تقييم مشروع «تقييم الطيران» وهو مشروع موازٍ لمشروع لتوسعة المطار تبلغ تكلفته 900 مليون ريال وسيتم من خلاله تحديث المدارج وفق أحدث التقنيات العالمية، وبما يمكن المطار من استقبال أي نوع من الطائرات.
وبين رحيمي خلال استقباله أمس الأمير مشعل بن ماجد بن عبدالعزيز محافظ جدة الذي تفقد مشاريع المطار الجديدة ان قرار حكومة خادم الحرمين الشريفين وولي عهده الأمين حفظهما الله الذي قضى بتنفيذ مشروع لتطوير المطار تطويراً جذرياً جاء ليحقق الطموحات ويواكب النمو الاقتصادي والحضاري والاجتماعي والسياحي والديني الذي تشهده عروس البحر الأحمر.. مدينة جدة.. فضلاً عن ضرورة رفع طاقته الاستيعابية لمواكبة النمو الهائل الذي يشهده المطار في حركته الجوية، اذ ارتفعت الحركة الجوية فيه من (7,2) مليون مسافر عام 1981 لتصبح أكثر من (15) مليون مسافر عام 2005م.

وأشار رحيمي بأن التوجيهات الكريمة حرصت أن لا يقتصر مشروع التطوير على خدمة زمن محدد بل تنفيذ مطار محوري يحقق الأهداف المرجوة ويلبي الاحتياجات لعقود قادمة.

وأوضح رئيس الهيئة العامة للطيران المدني بأنه نظراً للحجم الكبير للمشروع

عاجلاً وفي مرحلة متقدمة عن الصالات وقد تمت ترسيته على احدى الشركات الوطنية، تعكف الهيئة حالياً على انهاء الاجراءات المتبقية لترسية مشروع تطوير صالات الحج بواسطة القطاع الخاص وذلك من حيث التصميم والتمويل والتشغيل والصيانة من خلال أحد نماذج المشاركة المعروفة بين القطاع العام والخاص (BOT) وذلك بعد أن يتم اعتماد توصيات الهيئة المعروضة حاليا على المجلس الاقتصادي الأعلى.

The Civil Aviation Authority is considering building another airport in Jeddah to accommodate 100 million passengers annually, according to the London-based Arabic daily Asharq Al-Awast.

The paper quoted an unidentified source at the authority as saying that construction will take at least five years, making it inevitable to think about alternatives until the new airport is up and running.
One alternative, said the source, is to build a supplement to the King Abdul Aziz Airport to accommodate 30 million additional passengers a year, twice as much as the capacity of the existing airport.

The source said the annex will be constructed close to the existing airport, which means that the new airport will automatically absorb the passengers who exceed the capacity of the old airport because the annex is adjacent to the old airport.

The Aviation Authority announced that it has already started accepting tenders for the construction of the international airport according to the latest specification and standards of the modern aviation industry.

He said that construction of the new airport will be done five years from the date the winning company signs the contract.

I like the new design too. Also, this design is more conducive to expansion and allows for a higher number of boarding channels/gates.

But let's be honest here, will making shiny new terminals solve all the problems? I always felt that the biggest problem at the Jeddah airport was the personnel. Not to bash Saudis but the people at customs are some of the laziest I've seen. Saudis and other gulf citizens probably cannot relate to what I am saying. I have suffered hours standing in lines at the airport, along with many elderly people, while the customs officials were off chatting with their co-workers or taking a coffee break or prayer break.

As long as the new airport is run by same people who ran the old airport, things will never get better. Someone needs to be hired at the top who can crack a whip and straighten people out and let them know they are providing a service and they are not doing it for free.

Ugh...now that I brought them up I can see them in my head. Slobs, unprofessionally dressed and groomed. I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I have personally experienced this many times and many of you probably have as well...

KSA- GACA signs SR16b deals to develop KAIA

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The Saudi Arabian General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) has so far signed contracts worth more than SR16 billion to develop Jeddah's King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA), according to Abdullah Al Ruhaimy, president of GACA.

Al Ruhaimy said that contracts for the remaining works would be signed on a priority basis. He added that work on the new airport project would start early next year following a fast-track method. The project's first phase, designed to accommodate 30 million passengers, would be ready by 2012.

"Once the third and final phase of the project is completed in 2035, the airport will be able to handle 80 million passengers annually," the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted him as saying here on Wednesday.

Al Ruhaimy made the comment while making a presentation about the airport development project to Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal. He briefed the governor on the works and measures already completed to implement the project.

GACA signed an agreement last week with A鲯ports de Paris Company of France to provide design and engineering services for the first phase of KAIA's development project.

The agreement was valued at SR514.9 million.

"A study on the general airport plan has already been completed by the Netherlands Airport Consultants (NACO)," Al Ruhaimy said. The new airport will have state-of-the-art runways, aircraft parking facilities and air control towers, and will be able to receive new generation aircraft such as A380s.

He said Al Mabani Company won a SR902.91 million contract last year to develop and upgrade the airport's aviation facilities. The contract covered expansion of the airport's tarmac and runways.

30-80 Million people annually. Thats just great for Jeddah Airport. The problem is, Jeddah ITSELF cannot handle that many people. Once they leave the new airport, god help them.

So they have made the changes in the old renders?

they should refurbish the existing terminal and build one mega terminal.

it's not good to be build all in one shot but with average size.
later on the capacity will increase.

the new render is way better than the old one and also could accommodate bigger capacity.

I thought the renders with white roof are the original ones. The one freestyler posted are different and have more gates.

^^ I think the one with the white roofs is the actual design. The other ones posted by freestyler look like the doha airport to me although I could be wrong. They can't go with such a similar design, I mean that design was first used by Hong Kong and then Doha copied it...i mean surely Jeddah can't copy it as well.
