香港微笑煙花國慶匯演

【 本 報 訊 】 十 月 一 日 是 五 十 五 周 年 國 慶 ， 維 港 的 夜 空 將 閃 亮 璀 璨 耀 眼 的 煙 花 ， 預 料 會 有 四 十 萬 市 民 觀 看 。 今 次 歷 時 二 十 三 分 鐘 的 煙 花 演 共 分 十 幕 ， 除 以 港 人 笑 對 逆 境 作 主 題 ， 在 夜 空 閃 耀 出 四 個 「 哈 哈 笑 」 圖 案 的 一 幕 「 繼 續 微 笑 」 ， 及 以 兒 童 作 主 題 的 「 未 來 主 人 翁 」 外 ， 其 餘 八 幕 煙 花 的 主 題 一 律 是 慶 祝 國 慶 、 歌 頌 奧 運 健 兒 、 三 峽 水 利 工 程 、 憧 憬 CEPA 無 限 商 機 等 愛 國 訊 息 。
今 屆 國 慶 煙 花 匯 演 將 首 度 由 四 艘 躉 船 發 放 二 萬 八 千 三 百 枚 煙 花 ， 由 於 躉 船 數 目 增 加 ， 令 煙 花 的 發 放 幅 度 增 至 八 百 米 闊 四 百 米 高 。 全 場 最 特 別 的 一 幕 煙 花 ， 是 以 港 人 不 怕 挫 折 ， 永 遠 微 笑 面 對 挑 戰 的 「 繼 續 微 笑 」 ， 大 會 會 播 出 由 歌 星 許 冠 傑 演 繹 的 名 曲 《 繼 續 微 笑 》 ， 當 歌 詞 唱 到 「 繼 續 微 笑 」 這 四 個 字 時 ， 維 港 上 空 就 會 發 放 出 四 個 「 哈 哈 笑 」 的 有 趣 圖 案 。 另 外 ， 若 十 月 一 日 晚 間 下 雨 ， 煙 花 演 會 改 在 十 月 二 日 晚 上 九 時 舉 行 。

Hong Kong Smiley Fireworks Above Victoria Harbor on Chinese National Day

【Apple Daily】 On October 1st, the 55th Chinese National Day, Hong Kong’s night skyline will be colored by the shiny fireworks. About 400,000 thousand people are expected to watch the show, which will last for 23 minutes with 10 different stages. Besides using Hong Kongers facing negative challenges positively as this year's theme, 4 smiley fireworks will be lighting up the night sky to keep us smiling. This year’s theme also includes children of our hope, National Day celebration, congratulations to our Olympic athletes and 3 Gorges Damp, and greater opportunities from CEPA.

The show will be setup by 4 tugboats with 28,300 of fireworks. Because of that, the fireworks are expected to be 800m wide and 400m tall. When the 4 smileys lit up the sky, Sam Hui’s song, 繼 續 微 笑, will be played. However, if there is rain on Oct 1st, the show will be postponed to the following night.

Fireworks gala to mark twin celebration

A HK$4 million fireworks extravaganza featuring "Olympic hoops", "swinging horse tails" and "cracking candles", will light up Victoria Harbour on October 1 to celebrate National Day and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Starting at 9.15pm, the display will last for 23 minutes and see 23,888 firework shells fired 300 metres into the air from three barges.

The show will start with "Salute to our Motherland", with accompanying music. Other themes include "Pearl of the Orient", "Top of the World" and "Love in Hong Kong", with a soundtrack ranging from classical anthems to Canto-pop.

"Half-red Half-green Peony" will symbolise the "one country, two systems" concept, while "Angel Hair", "Silver Tail to Water" and "Spider Web" will represent dressage, show jumping and cross-country in the Olympic equestrian events, to be staged in Hong Kong.

The topic for the display was inspired by Kenneth Chu Ting-kin, vice-chairman of Mission Hills Golf Club near Shenzhen, which is sponsoring the event. "To mark the 57th anniversary of the mainland we have chosen scenes to showcase the country's strength and prosperity and to commemorate the elation at welcoming the 2008 Olympics and the equestrian events in Hong Kong," he said.

Fireworks technical consultant Wilson Mao Wai-shing urged spectators not to crowd the Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai waterfronts, saying the display would be visible from many viewpoints and that the soundtrack would be played on Commercial Radio.

Restaurants get into holiday mood

More than half a million mainlanders have crossed into Hong Kong for the National Day Golden Week holiday, with 250,000 passing through the checkpoints yesterday.
A number of restaurants reported above-average business, though there were diverging opinions on how much of this was due to the mainland appetite.

An immigration official said about 258,000 mainlanders had crossed over by 5pm yesterday, and 141,000 had left.

Most of them came in through Lo Wu, with the average waiting time for clearance being about 30 minutes.

Association of Travel Agents vice chairman Paul Leung Yiu-lam said there were about 300 mainland tour groups a day, which is almost the same as last year.

But he noted some groups had shortened their time in Hong Kong to spend a day or two in Macau.

A tourist surnamed Tse said she would spend three days in Hong Kong and one in Macau.

Travel Industry Council executive director Joseph Tung Yao-chung said Macau would not draw tourists away from Hong Kong. "Macau's attraction is entertainment," Tung said. "Hong Kong is more appealing to families. In the long run, the two cities should work together to promote tourism."

One tourist from Beijing did complain of being taken to a To Kwa Wan jewelry shop that offered low-quality goods.

According to Commercial Radio, the tourist had joined a four-day tour in Shenzhen arranged by Pegasus International Travel. A spokesman for the agency refused to comment.

Meanwhile, restaurateurs offered differ
ent views on the effect of mainlanders on their business.

"Most mainlanders come to Hong Kong mainly for shopping. Even if they want to eat, they will look for cuisine not found in their hometowns. Chinese cuisine is definitely not on their list," said Law Wai-kong, general manager of the New Dynasty Scenic Restaurant in Wan Chai.

Takings at the New Dynasty, located on the 60th floor of the Hopewell Centre in Wan Chai, surged 30 percent to HK$160,000 yesterday. .

"Our customers, usually families, pick us as they want to enjoy dinner when the spectacular fireworks display is on," Law said.

"Without the fireworks, sales will be back to normal. The golden week effect only lasts one day for us."

But Andy Kwok Luk-ming, managing director of Everfresh Seafood Restaurant in Causeway Bay, said business over the weekend was "especially good."

Kwok said mainlanders are more willing to spend money on food than locals. "Hong Kong people prefer set meals and special offers. On average, the bill for a group of mainland diners amounts to about HK$1,500 - 50 percent higher than the HK$1,000 tab for Hong Kong people," he said.

Causeway Bay's Forum Restaurant, famous for its abalone, said its sales were expected to jump 20 percent, although managing director Yeung Koon-yat noted sales during festive periods do not always outperform regular weekdays.

"A festive period means that restaurants will be packed with many customers. That scares away some other customers," Yeung said.
