Tips and advise on International red and white wine that could be bought in Sri Lanka.

Discuss your favorite wines. Share with us about a new or rare wine!

Compare prices and tell us where you tried or bought them from.

Hotels in Sri Lanka offer a great deal of wines, tell us which ones you tasted and recommend.

At the wine shop in crescat city you could buy an Australian wine called 'Brown Label' from Wolf Blass. Try this wine.

Medium to full purple-red; the moderately intense bouquet has fresh red and dark berry fruit foremost; rich, ripe dark berry fruit allied with a touch of chocolate follow on the palate; the good structure is as much driven by tannins as oak. James Halliday Mar 20 2002 Rating: 91 out of 100.

Are there any wines distinctively Sri Lankan?
I was once served a white wine at the Triton Hotel which was made in Sri Lanka. I was told that the grapes were imported from South Africa and made in Sri Lanka. The wine was great.

Does somebody know if grapes could be grown in Sri Lanka. Especially in the hill country?

I know oranges and apples, strawberries are grown in the hill country so grape could be a possibility.

I just looked into this thread and there seems to be no interest on wines at all in Sri Lanka.
The wine shop at the crescat (dont know if it still exists) had great red wines for sale. I bought a few Australian wines to take back to Europe and they were great.

I think it is still running, but hotels are quite generous in the variety of wines they offer...

dfdo
December 21st, 2006, 11:08 AM
But I guess the wines served in the hotels are highly priced. The wine shop should sell the Australian wines for a fraction of the price.

December 21st, 2006, 03:41 PM
Yeah, I want there today, inside the Crescat Keells and they offered a good variety at an offerdable price../.

Can you put your money where your mouth is? How about $14,500 for what a Sri Lankan resort is calling the world's most expensive dessert: a fruit infused confection complete with a chocolate sculpture and a gigantic gemstone. The Fortress resort in the coastal city of Galle hopes to give visitors a "one-of-a-kind" experience with "The Fortress Fisherman Indulgence," which includes an 80 carat aquamarine stone.

Thiru Kumar, 'Dosa Man,' presents one of his delicious spicy, potato-filled pancakes.

Bragging rights for New York's top sidewalk chef went to Thiru Kumar last night for his street cart's vegan Indian food delights.

Known as the "Dosa Man," Kumar, 39, won the top prize, The Silver Vendy Cup, in the third annual Vendy Awards held in Manhattan's Tompkins Square Park.

Kumar serves up dosas - spicy, potato-filled pancakes - among other veggie concoctions at Washington Square South and Sullivan St. in the West Village.

"I made a lot of vegans happy today," the Sri Lanka native said while noting his large following among college students. "There is even a dosa fan club at NYU."

Manning his street cart for six years, Kumar has been dubbed the "Susan Lucci of the Vendys" because he's been a finalist three times.

The event raises money for the Street Vendor Project, a nonprofit organization that supports the city's more than 10,000 sidewalk chefs.

Hundreds of New Yorkers paid $60 to eat - and vote - for their favorite streetcorner cooks.

Oct 11, 2007 (LBO) - The Hilton hotel in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo will muster up to 40 chefs to make what's considered a record-breaking two-tonne 'kottu roti' pancake mix to mark its 21st anniversary.

The 2,100 kilo kottu will include 525 kilos of 'Gothamba Roti', the main flour-based pancake mix ingredient in a kottu.

Some 400 kilos of chicken, 500 kilos of vegetables and 7,000 eggs will also go in to the mix which will be fried and cut into small pieces

With added seasoning for taste, the kottu, which its promoters say may even be suited for a Guinness record, will yield 7,000 potions.

The event, part of the hotel's October promotions, with proceeds being donated to charity, will be held on October 21.

The hotel, which is owned by a Colombo listed company with state-ownership, is operated by the Hilton Hotels Corporation chain that has over 2,800 hotels in 76 countries.

The event is aimed at enhancing the experience of Sri Lankan culture among tourists, Hilton said in a statement.

The hotel has also planned to award 20 scholarships for students who have been unable to gain entry to the hospitality and leisure trade.

The scholarships will carry a six-month internship program at the hotel itself.

Hilton also plans to partner with the school for the deaf and blind to raise funds for the physically challenged students.

Odel, the country's most talked about department store, a shopaholics true paradise, now offers the most yummiest treats ever!!! - What am I babbling about? The Odel Boulevard of course.

Though the Boulevard is a relativity new addition it has certainly added value to the famous Odel brand while touching the hearts of many by unveiling this unique experience in casual dining.

Irresistible in every sense, the Boulevard echoes of comfort - a uniquely different place to chill out after an exciting day of shopping.

Simple yet stylish, relaxing and laid back are the prefect words to describe this unusual line up of cafés that offer you an array of cuisines catering to the needs of a local and international customers.

Drifting away from the same old mix of cuisines that have become so mundane, the Boulevard takes casual dining to another level, courtesy of the Elephant House hot dog station, Harpos' pizza, Oodles noodles bar, Magic corn, Chezindi, Roots and the organic café known as "Nude Food".

My first stop was the Oodles noodles bar. They unmistakably serve the most delicious noodles ever.
http://i27.tinypic.com/2euu050.jpg
Step over to the Oodles noodle bar and create your own noodle dish by selecting the type of noodle you'd like to try, the flavour of your choice and your meat or vegetarian option.

I opted for the spaghetti with, chicken, Italian pesto, creamy basil and olive oil. It was really good!! Delicious.

Apart from the signature noodles they also serve soups and salads, roti, and have a chocolate fountain - need I say more?

My next stop was at the Organic café "Nude Food" an interesting addition to the Boulevard no doubt.

Passionate Sally Michel from Nude Food says that they serve a range of vegetarian dishes that change periodically while also offering an array of delicacies from muffins, to truffles and milkshakes to aromatic coffees.

Please feel free to step in and enjoy guiltless eating at its best!!

"Our vegetables are all organic; the food we serve is low fat, cooked in a healthy manner and fresh. All the dishes are vegetarian,' she said smilingly while offering us her delicious brownies that have now been labelled as "Colombo's best brownie".

If the true test of the brownie was in the taste- I have to say that it was melt in the mouth delicious, perfect and simply amazing - I could go on and on about the brownie!!! I wonder what her secret recipe is??

It's no surprise that people drive all the way to sink their teeth into this' little piece of heaven'.

"Chezindi" is another unique feature that treats your taste buds to an assortment of French Crepes from sweet to savoury. I had the nutella crepe which was oozing of chocolate.

There is also Harpos' pizza, authentic Italian pizzas with a touch of Sri Lankan hospitality, and Roots to quench your thirst after a scrumptious meal.

You don't necessarily have to shop till you drop at Odel to enjoy the Boulevard at its best.

Outsiders are always encouraged to visit and its evident that the Boulevard has indeed become a hit, for where else can you enjoy a good read with a wholesome cup of coffee, grab a quick bite from the best noodle bar, dig into a delicious French crepe with your best friend during your lunch break, or just chill out and take in the hustle and bustle of Colombo while slurping a fresh smoothie.

Another plus point is that the pricing is extremely reasonable.

This amazing gastronomical experience is all thanks to the Odel Boulevard so don't hesitate, just walk in and feel the difference.

The Odel Boulevard is open till 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 8pm during the rest of the week.

Customers at several restaurants in Colombo can pay for their meals from their table, allowing them to maintain control of their credit card throughout the entire payment process, thereby reducing the chance of fraud. This innovative payment scheme has been introduced at several of Hilton Colombo's restaurants including Ginza Hohsen, Spices, Emperor's Wok and the Thorana Loungle. The Pay@Table technology from Ingenico France is also available at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, Rajabojun and other restaurants and clubs. AG Austasia, a Perth, Western Australia based company with a development centre in Sri Lanka are the application development partner for Ingenico.

Pay@Table is described as a solution dedicated and tailored to hospitality markets for high secure transactions. It was born out of the idea that handling customer payments could be greatly improved worldwide through a user friendly, portable device that accepts all transaction types while speeding delivery of service, improving convenience and security and lowering transaction costs. Skimming can occur anytime a credit card holder loses sight of his or her credit card. With Pay@Table, consumers maintain control of their card as they always have the card in their hands. The customer enjoys a significantly higher level of personal security and reduces fraud potential dramatically.

'Harpos Pizza' expands into SAARC region
Thu, 2008-08-07 05:18
By Quintus Perera – Asian Tribune
http://www.asiantribune.com/files/images/HARPO%20AND%20MALDIVIAN%20PARTNER.jpg
Colombo, 07 August, (Asiantribune.com): Popular Restaurateur, Harpo Gooneratne announced plans to take his reputed
Sri Lankan home-grown brand "Harpos Pizza" to the neighbouring Maldive Islands, as part of an ambitious plan to expand into the SAARC region.

'Harpos Pizza' is already one year old in Sri Lankan market and enjoys a fast growing clientele, comprising both Sri Lankans and expatriates.Harpo Gooneratne and his Maldivian partner Abdul Rasheed
Gooneratne said that he was proud to market a Sri Lankan brand beyond the shores of this country. "The trial runs in fact has proved very successful with an excellent feedback all round”, he said.

He said that there is a big potential in the Maldives market as theirs will be the only 'crispy base' authentic Italian pizza on the island, and they are confident of a very high demand and thus good sales in the local market.

He said that his target market would be both resident Moldavians and expatriate hotel guests in Male. The operation will be initially run by three trained and skilled Sri Lankans with high speed delivery bikes taking 'Harpos Pizza', piping hot to customers around Male island.

He said that depending on the success of this operation in Male, they plan to expand delivery to the adjoining resort islands and will then use the traditional dhonis and bikes for quick delivery.

The range of Hapos Pizza to be marketed will be from the standard variants and Sri Lankan flavours together with a special Tuna-based pizza for the Maldivian palates, developed according to local tastes and flavours. All pizzas will be strictly Halal and free of pork-based products.

Gooneratne Colombo restaurants include 'The Commons' Coffee House and 'The Bay Leaf', the City's finest Italian restaurant, will also spearhead F&B operations at the 25 room Bed & Breakfast 'Park House' property in the capital Male, owned by Maldivian entrepreneur / hotelier Abdul Rasheed.

From my experiences, it depends on where you are. A lot of the times, there aren't enough Sri Lankans or people wanting Sri Lankan food for there to be an exclusively Sri Lankan restaurant. So they usually provide types of Indian cuisine as well.

The unmistakable aroma of fresh coffee and friendly chatter: that’s what you are guaranteed at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, not only in Colombo and Katunayake, but very soon in Palawaththa, too.

Director Operations of The Coffee Bean, Niroshan De Silva invites all to slip into the comfortable luxuries at The Coffee Bean from this Wednesday, and experience the captivating tastes of caffeine sweeping you into an aura delightful relaxation.

The popular café, opened at the Katunayake airport in 1996, is set to make its mark among the busy hubbubs of Palawaththa amid huge flamboyance and customer demand. “For the past six months we have been obligated to open up a new branch. We came to the conclusion that Palawaththa was the best option,” says Niroshan, “it is an affluent area with the additional benefit of having the Overseas School, which would without doubt encourage our sales in the area.”

“This is probably the best and the only place in Sri Lanka which serves quality coffee,” says Niroshan. “We exercise great care to produce quality products here and all packaging and most of the raw material is imported from the US,” he said.

“We invest a lot of money to ensure that we maintain quality and consistency at all times.”

With free WIFI and all comforts guaranteed, The Coffee Bean is sure to be a “home away from home,” says Niroshan.

Working according to their ‘F.R.O.T.H.’ core values, which stand for Friendly, Respect, Ownership, Teamwork and Honesty, The Coffee Bean has grown from strength to strength in the past few years. “Our passionate team comprising of both experienced and young team members have received training in both tea and coffee. They promise to give all those who live around Palawaththa the best coffee deal in town.”

Savouring Wadiya
By Natasha Fernandopulle, Pix by M. A. Pushpa Kumara

"Beach Wadiya is not merely a beach restaurant. It is much, much more. It is a heritage, a landmark, a legend and, above all, the only one of its kind." – Dr. H. Varma, Director Development Assistant Department, World Tourism Organisation.

"A "Virgin" Restaurant! ” – Sir Richard Branson

Such are the comments found in a few of the guest books remaining after they were washed away from the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and they truly state what this restaurant Beach Wadiya is all about.

Well known for their amazing and mouth-watering baked crab, which one of the customers said, is simply "out of this world" and was having a second serving of it, then the devilled crab which comes with a delicious gravy and said to be favoured by the star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and the kankung dish which is a favourite of Princess Anne are some of the well known and loved dishes served at this restaurant…which are one-of-a-kind, hands down!

Olwyn Weerasekera, the owner of Beach Wadiya is from the south of the country, and had no prior training in this industry. It was his love for the food of the south that influenced him a great deal to dive into this restaurant business. And prior to this he was involved in a pharmaceutical firm. "Necessity is the mother of invention," he said adding, "I had to survive and live on this –that made me carry on this and continue," he said.

Having come across people from all walks of life during the past 30 plus years, he said it has always been a pleasure for him to have met people from Royalty to well known cricketers and celebrities, to entrepreneurs to just the simple common man.

Mr. Weerasekera has maintained the same standards over the years and says, "if you have come then or now or later, nothing would have changed except got better," adding that he would not have been successful if these simple rules were/are not followed. The food has been bought daily and is always fresh because he believes in always giving the customer the very best. The restaurant only has one sitting therefore you do not have to worry about rushing through your meal, when you are there it is all about the food, the natural ambiance and of course you!

Mr. Weerasekera stresses that you must make a reservation if you plan on dining there in the evenings. The restaurant is open from 10am – 3pm and then again from 6.30 - 11pm and closed only on Poya Days. There is obviously seafood on the menu but there are vegetarian dishes and meats like chicken or beef. Ice cream, wattalappam, curd and treacle or fruit are on offer for desserts.

A good combination at the restaurant would be the delicious crab and egg soup with garlic toast followed by their signature baked crab. This can then be followed by the scrumptious devilled crab, grilled prawns, kankung, vinegar soaked tomatoes, all with a lightly tossed fried rice. I can almost assure you these dishes will make your day!

Possibly the most cheerful server in town Banda, makes your experience at the Beach Wadiya that much more special. Banda has been at the restaurant for 29 years and joined them just before getting his O'Level results at the age of 16. "I give the restaurant my best and nothing less," he said, adding, "each day is a new day for me!"

He is ever so grateful for his job and says there is nothing quite like it, especially in terms of meeting people from all walks of life. Banda maintains the fact that "the customer is the boss" and is ever-ready to help you and is always bright and chirpy. In fact, it is so very rare to find such a genuine server anywhere.

The restaurant was affected when the 2004 South Asian Tsunami hit the coastal areas of Sri Lanka, and the three metre high water mark at the restaurant is stark reminder of this. The story of the restaurant can be seen all over the restaurant with the many photographs on the walls and proves just how much this restaurant can be considered a historical landmark in Sri Lanka. The restaurant has not changed at all and the ambiance is simple and all that counts is the delicious seafood.

Beach Wadiya is situated at 2, Station Avenue, Wellawatte and for reservations please call ahead and you can do so on, 258 8568/451 4477.

Cool, I am an ardent fan of Coffee Bean and I feel they have really chosen another good location...

Good to see Coffee Bean expanding. Do you guys have Starbucks or Krispy Kreme yet? Is Movenpick still there in SL?

Tamil Vegetarian Street Food - New Letchumi Bhawan Restaurant

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_NYlAcT1wV60/SkC2Lt3CwbI/AAAAAAAADFs/KwxlH6H6RzQ/IMG_5247.JPG

In Colombo, we're blessed with an abundance of restaurants serving Tamil vegetarian food. The usual suspects like the Mathuras and the Shanthi Vihars litter the streets of Colombo, serving acres and acres of dosa nightly.

My favourite such place is a little less well known. It's also not as nice but 1) it's also cheaper 2) that's part of the fun. New Letchumi Bhawan is on Ernest De Silva Mw (formerly Flower Road) in between Cotton Collection and Leather Collection. It's an odd bird in that herd but it's an awfully tasty one.

For breakfast, they have idiappam or string hoppers. I order in Sinhalese so they automatically bring coconut sambol and kiri hodi with it. But I always ask for the sambar and the thosai sambol instead, which is much tastier. The waiter - a guy in a sarong - brings over a small metal bucket of thosai sambol and a big metal bucket of sambar.

Picking out the pieces of pumpkin that dot the sambar, I begin my meal. 5 strings later, I ask for the side dishes. Soya curry, dry curried chick peas, potatoes in a light garlic curry and tempered spicy potatoes are the standard ones which come in tiny silver dishes. One of those dishes and 10 or 15 strings later, I ask for the bill and a plain tea (which comes in a tiny glass).

I am LKR 100 or so in the hole. Leaving a generous(!) LKR 20 tip, I get up and walk out, conscious of the need to realign my posture to my new centre of gravity, 1 or 2 feet below what it used to be.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_NYlAcT1wV60/SkC1_3wx4nI/AAAAAAAADFo/rIXvEpMUWGg/IMG_5244.JPG

On days when I feel adventurous, I have the wadais - parippu (dhal), potato or ulundu - which those who know have given me excellent reviews about. And on days when I go late, they have, for lunch, this nice vegetarian rice dish for 80 odd LKR with some vegetable curries on the side.

Saivara kades have two words associated with them: dingy, dirty and claustrophobic (ok, three!). But New Letchumi Bhawan is wide open and airy and is as clean as any place I've seen. They've even recently upgraded the tables and chairs to the kind you get at the Arpico food court.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_NYlAcT1wV60/SkC1JNF4lXI/AAAAAAAADFg/alaY4Hf7DaU/IMG_5242.JPG

New Letchumi Bhawan is the only place on Flower Road where you can walk in with a hundred rupee note and get something good. If I may get Marxist for a bit, it is a little oasis of proletarianism in the bourgeois desert that is Colombo 7. Visiting it just to keep some sanity on a road where they sell a cheese roti for LKR 300 is worth it.

PS: If you've got any good suggestions for similar, less well known places like the Yapane Bath Kade, please let me know in the comments

Hi Dfdo... I must mention that I DID NOT write the above OR take the photos. I also do not run the lankareviewed blog. I just posted the article here with some pics. I have let the owner of the blog know about this and to let me know if they have any objections, and asked him/her to consider joining Skyscrapercity and place their reviews here as well.

I haven't been to Letchumi Bhawan but would like to try it now after reading the review! :)

Never been there, but that sounds rather pricey (by SL standards).

Had a delicious meal (drinks + 4 curries, relishes & rice + dessert) for 10 people for about 3000 rupees all together ( ie ~ 300 rupees per person)... it was good :)

This wasn't in Colombo though.

I found food to be incredibly cheap in Sri Lanka.. although if you're not a fan of rice and curry you will have to pay more (still cheap though)

And the pastries... oh god...couldn't get enough

I love Kottu Roti and the pastries. Though I'm not a fan of Tamil food in Sri Lanka . As Muslim, halal food is so plentily available in Srilanka- KFC, Pizza Hut, even the buffet at Raja Bojun is entirely halal !! And we are speaking of a country of just 10-15% Muslim population.

Coming from Malaysia, I found food prices in Lanka slightly costlier, though.

Sri Lankan people eat ALOT (!!!) - a plate of fried rice in Lanka equals to 3 plates in Malaysia.

I would've guessed so- Chinese food is plentily available all over Lanka.

Believe it or not Kottu Roti is an authentic Sri lankan dish found by the muslims of eastern sri lanka(not tamils) in the 70s.Its now very popular in most parts of the world ..at least I can get Kottu roti even from an indian or kerala restaurent here in saudi arabia...this what the wikipedia has to say about it..

Koththu, or Koththu Roti (කොත්තු හෝ කොත්තු රොටී) is a Sri Lankan dish, made from a Sri Lankan roti called "Godhamba Roti" (ගෝදඹ රොටී) and vegetables, egg, or meat, and various spices. A hot koththu is generally eaten as a dinner meal. The common varieties include beef or chicken, with egg and vegetable Kothus available for vegetarians.

It is traditional to make the kothu on a heated iron sheet, used specifically for the purpose, and the cutting up and mixing of the kothu is done using two other blunt metal blades. This clashing of metal on metal creates a very distinctive sound, and come late evening the beat of kottu being prepared can be heard rising up from any small roadside restaurant.

Kothu Roti originated in Batticaloa (මඩකලපුව), in the Eastern parts Sri Lanka during the early 70s. Etymologically the name is Tamil language meaning "chopped roti". (Chopped wheat roti mixed with curry sauce) The basic rotti is made of Gothamba flour. The name itself is Tamil Gothamba (A form of Kathamba-meaning a flour made out of a variety of grains-referring to the white flour, and roti

Sri Lanka's Wine and Grapes Monday, 28 February 2011 14:21 Arrangements have been made to establish a Wine Producing Plant in Kilinochchi to process wine, for the first time in Sri Lanka at a cost of Rs. 300 Million.
http://www.news.lk/home/17486-sri-lankas-wine-and-grapes

Feasibility studies of this project have being completed, and it is expected to have a 200 out growers for this venture. Hybrid grape seeds for this project would be imported from Israel and would be distributed to ou tgrowers while the machinery would be imported from Europe. The out growers would also be given technical knowhow and buy back arrangements for their produce.

Sri Lanka imports over 90 percent of its grapes mainly from Australia and India and nearly 99 percent of wines. Today an imported kilogram of grapes is priced around Rs. 1,200 while a bottle of wine is over Rs. 2,000.

It is estimated that the new project could provide red and white wines and grapes less than 75 percent of the current prices. The Sri Lankan produced wine will also serve the steeply growing tourist industry.(niz)

Went to dinner at Tintagel last week, the food was very nice (I had cuttlefish risotto in black ink sauce) and the service was impeccable. Raja Bojun is good too!
