I've noticed that threads of individual Lithuanian cities are dying and decided to create one thread for all Lithuanian cities/towns. Also now there will be a place where to post information about projects in smaller Lithuanian cities (not only Vilnius, Kaunas or Klaipėda).

I'll start with few projects in Šiauliai. Šiauliai with population of 130 000 is the fourth biggest Lithuanian city.

New universal arena is being built in Šiauliai. It'll have 5000 places. Arena is being cladded with holographic glass which has different colors from different angles. Construction update by kaunietis from tinkle.miestai.net:

Riga arena - basketball 14 000 (seats + standing places, ice hockey - 10 300. I don't know how many seats there are.

But I don't care, because it is still comparatively small - if we compare with arenas in similar sized Western European cities. And architecture is almost nonexistant. While this arena in Kaunas is value by itself irrespective of No of seats.

Actually arena of Riga will not be bigger than arena of Kaunas. Usually there is no such thing as "standing places" for basketball. And here are official data for arena in Riga (from www.arenariga.com):
Ice-hockey 10300
Basketball 11200
Concerts 10500
Maximum capacity 12500

Data for arena of Kaunas:
Basketball 12490
Concerts 10677
Seated/standing concert capacity 12500 + possible outdoor audience

Jeffas

Seated/standing concert capacity 12500 + possible outdoor audience

What I get from the pictures of Kaunas arena, it will be a choice between the indoor OR outdoor audiences rather both at the same time. The facade will be covered in glass and not removable, but it will have a big "hole", which could contain the stage for the performance, and this stage can be viewed from inside and outside.

I don't think it's very likely to have audience outside and inside at the same time.

Besides, upon closer examination of the plan you can also see the "stage area" outside the arena, in the island territory (I guess, the point is that people sitting outside and watching the performace could also have a view on the oldtown)

article also says that glass, steel and rock (judging from the renders - most probably granite) will be used in exterior of the building - glass and Steel in the upper part and rock in lower part of the highrise

Update of "Vilnius gates" complex. At that lower part which is covered with convex glass first Pacha club in Northern Europe will be opened. It will take two floors. Quote from www.baltictimes.com
The giant two-floor dance club, which can accommodate up to 15,000 people, will be located on Gedeiminas Prospekt, the Oxford Street of Vilnius. Ter Braak is already ecstatic about the idea. “Vilnius is ready for it. It will be a big step forward for the Baltics’ nightclub life.”
It's weird that "baltic times" make so many mistakes. Anyway 15 000 people is really much.

Center of Registers and Vetruna towers finishing (24 and 16 floors)

Hansabank headquarters u/c (16 floors)
this kvartalas tower u/c (28-31 floors)

I think I have not posted anything from the fifth biggest city/town of Lithuania yet. Panevėžys has population of 115 315 (2006). The biggest project in Panevėžys is called "Babilonas" (quite stupid name if you ask me ;)). "Babilonas" is big multifunctional complex which will include shopping centers, offices, hotel... First stage of this project is already finished, 26 000 m2 shopping center was built. Currently second stage is being U/C (19 000 m2 shopping and entertainment center + 13 000m2 office/hotel building).

"Lietuvos geležinkeliai" plans to change most of old passenger trains till 2013 year.
This and next year we will get four new diesel trains RA-2 and two new electric double decker trains.

Article about double deckers:
2007.01.23 New Passenger Trains For Lithuania
2006.12. An agreement for procurement of two double - deck passenger electric trains between JSC Lietuvos geležinkeliai and ČKD Vagonka a.s. has been signed on December 15, 2006. Starting from September of 2008 the new trains will be operated on the line Vilnius - Kaunas.

Those will be double – deck trains ( carrying capacity being 318 passengers) for the first time operated in the Baltic region. The trains will run at 160 km/ h speed, consuming by 15 per cent less electric energy than their predecessors. For the convenience of the passengers the trains are equipped with: low floor, air conditioning system, modern WC, coffee machines and refreshments, special seats for handicapped.

First Class passengers will be provided the opportunity to work with their PC, connected to local power supply system. Video cameras are installed in ČKD trains as well. The trains are controlled by the modern traffic management system and operated by one driver only. It is foreseen that travel time from Vilnius to Kaunas will be reduced to 50 minutes.

"Lietuvos geležinkeliai" are also buying 34 new Eurorunner® ER20 CF freight locomotives.
ER20 CF for Lithuanian Railways
The rich variety of the Eurorunner platform is demonstrated once again by the order for 34 freight locomotives which we received from Lithuania. Based on the ER30 platform version, this locomotive has six axles, a track gauge of 1,520 mm and a country-specific structure clearance gauge
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8797/lmer20cfwk0.jpg

"Lietuvos geležinkeliai" currently are renovating 1,2 km tunnel near Kaunas. After renovation the speed will be increased.
2007.01.23 RENOVATION OF KAUNAS RAILWAY TUNNEL
The representatives of JSC Lietuvos geležinkeliai, JSC Kauno Tiltai and Close JSC VolkerRail Lietuva have signed Procurement Agreement for Kaunas Railway Tunnel Contractor Works on January 8, 2007.

It is expected, that 85 per cent of the works will be financed from the European Union Cohesion Funds, while the remaining 15 per cent - from local financial sources. Within two and a half years of reconstruction of the tunnel the following works are to be done: the upper structure renovated, power supply and signalling systems updated, new monitoring and safety systems installed.

While reconstructing the tunnel the narrow passages are to be widened, stonework and hydroinsulation restored, tunnel arches raised up, new water drainage systems installed. The total length of the tunnel is 1298 metres.

The design speed of locomotives operated on the line will be 120km/h, they have six axles, driver cabins at both ends and a diesel engine. Locomotives could be one man operated. The work of the driver could be facilitated by on board computer, the diagnosis system, functioning from the engine and traction system as well. The purchase of the locomotives will replace obsolete locomotives being in use at the moment and besides their operation costs will by 40 per cent lower. The locomotives will comply with the requirements

Also "Lietuvos geležinkeliai" have fully finnished reconstruction of Vilnius train station and also they are reconstructing other train stations. Recently reconstructed underground crossing at Vilnius train station:

Agreements have been signed on Technical Engineering Assistance for Infrastructure Modernization of JSC "Lithuanian Railways"

On February 8th, 2008 JSC "Lithuanian Railways" and German company "DB – International GmbH" have signed agreements on: "Technical Engineering Assistance For Infrastructure Modernization of the Line Vilnius - Kaunas, Operational Speed 160km/h." and "For Construction of the Second Track on Sections Kyviškės – Valčiūnai and Vaidotai – Paneriai".

In 2007 – 2013 the enterprise, implementing projects financed from the EU funds, foresees to assign billion 2,9 LTL of investments for development and modernization of thecomany's infrastructure, out of thisamount - billion 1,9 LTL is EU funding.

One of the major projects of the present time is reconstruction of Corridor IX, section Vilnius – Kaunas for operational speed 160km/h. It is a complex project, including modernization of: track, its upper structure, power supply and signalling systems, overhead catenary.

In the first stage itis planned to reconstruct the track, while in the second - to upgrade powersupply and signalling systems.Having implemented the a.m. project the travel time from Vilniusto Kaunas will reduce to 50 minutes.

The agreement on technical engineering, total value of which-million 7,1 Euro signed on 2008.02.08. is the first agreement of such scale, realizing the infrastructure modernization projects for period 2007 – 2013. The first stage of engineering works is to be finished by the end of 2009, construction of the track to be started in 2010.

The second agreement for the amount of million 3,7 LTL signed on 2008.02.08 is construction of the second track on rail sections: Kyviškės–Valčiūnai and Vaidotai – Paneriai, Corridor IX B. Having finished this project the number of trains running via Vilnius will be considerablyreduced. The works on the project will be started in 2009.

Vilnius-Kaunas at the speed of 160km/h sounds quite good but why can't they decrease the number of stations between Vilnius and Kaunas? 50 min is not that impressive.

whatever...

Absolutely agree. What's the point of upgrading to 160 km/h, if the train barely gets to 100 and there's an another station.

Imho, only three should be left, the ones in majors towns in-between:

Vilnius-Lentvaris-Vievis-Kaisiadorys-Kaunas

Or maybe even less. I'm sure if it would take like 35 or so min, railways would get way more passengers

Still, it's about the same that it takes with a car, and people will surely prefer their cars instead of rail, if it doesnt really have any advantages... except for price, which is also, of not that big of a difference.

"Lithuanian railways" are buying Czech, Polish, German and Russian trains/freight locomotives/rail buses. For all of them there were competitions announced and I don't know why they chose these Russian trains. Maybe because they were cheaper. For more serious routes there will be Czech double decker trains (Vilnius-Kaunas) bought (if I remember correctly first ones will be delivered this year too). Those Czech double deckers are not the most beautiful too (of course it depends from taste) though they can reach 160 km/h speed. Anyway, personally I'm quite happy that old trains are being replaced. :)

the czech train is good, even though they are commuter trains.
you see, the main thing that makes those russian trains ugly, and old is the way they couple the cars, see the huge gap between the cars and the way it breaks there... the lively on that specific train also accentuate it.
The czech train lacks that gap and is coupled in a modern way, meaning the full body of the train, from the inside, seems whole.

as for us, we have talked alot but purchased little. But first new electric trainsets should be arriving in 2011... and at the same time we should also get new intercity trains.

Dompcz
April 27th, 2008, 11:50 PM
^^ What kind of electric trainsets/intercity trains you are going to get in 2011 exactly? There is probably smaller need of passenger transportation in Estonia because there is no network of bigger cities. In Lithuania the situation is quite poor in this sphere too, just recently "Lithuanian railways" started to invest more, most of train stations were reconstructed and now new trains + reconstruction of train tunnel near Kaunas. But here we also love cars too much so that's an additional minus. It's easy to travel f.e. Vilnius-Kaunas in an hour or less by car so not many will choose trains unless they'll be much cheaper/faster.

That Russian train has got bad build quality - it's shape at a first glimpse resembles something modern, but the uneven surface of body tells the old story about their machine building quality. Czech machine looks like a common workhorse - not posh but reliable. Would not mind to have it in Latvia too.
- - -
And what kind of new trains Estonia/Latvia bought?
To my mind Latvia has done rather much regarding passenger railway. They act according to specific program. According to this program over the last years there were renovated the old electric and diesel trains - they were renovated here, in Riga.

Diesel train:
http://www.ldz.lv/gallery/PV_dizelvilciens/3.jpg
http://www.ldz.lv/gallery/PV_dizelvilciens/6.jpg

Electrical train:
http://www.ldz.lv/gallery/modern_elektr/6280_.jpg
http://www.ldz.lv/gallery/modern_elektr/6377_jaunie_kresli.jpg
(33 train vagons renovated in such way, 68 more to be renovated in this year)

This extends their lifetime for 15 years. At the end of last year there ended investigations regarding purchase of new passenger trains - it has been decided to upgrade whole passenger train system in the country and to buy new, low-floor trains. Tender on purchase will be announced in this summer and the first new trains should be here at the end of 2009. Simultaneously there will be rebuilt passenger stations with 55 cm high perons which will correspond to the height of the new trains.

With the requirements of our railway there comply some 6 - 7 large machine builders of the world, unfortunately our own producer - RVR - is not among them because they don't have expertise in such modern trains and can't produce them in large amounts. But let's wait who will win. EU financing for new eletrical trains is 121 mio EUR, our state will add something too.

Vilnius-Kaunas is probably the line which is used by biggest number of passengers or at least it has the biggest potential in Baltic states and the numbers will increase much when new trains will be used and speed will be increased. But yes, you are right it is possible to use 5-6 normal train cars instead of these 3. So probably the only true answer to this question is: it's cheaper to use double deck trains.

At last one project on space in the Baltics. I have been working for a space center for more than 10 years and I know that interest of people is very limited since race to the moon. Hope this center will be sustainable financially. :)

Can you precise location so I can plan a visit and when it is scheduled to open to public?

Maybe we will see some more in the future while Lithuania has decided to join ESA (we will need 8 years for that if we will be lucky).

And I remember this museum in my school age, I thought that it is flounding and then it shows such an impressive, compared with what it was, renovation. I'm very happy for that.

And thanks for the photos, Linas.

I really hope the Baltic states will join ESA one day, but it must be prepared and pushed by governments. It goes along with development of aeronautic industry and sciences. We must find our specificities to make civilian space projects here. Science park, etc. is the first step. I had ESA among my costumers, not easy costumer but worth it. It is good reference and also pushes your company to go beyond your limits. That the worst I wish the space indsutry here.

But what is the real state of the space industry in the Baltics?

I really hope the Baltic states will join ESA one day <...>
I remember my reasonings on this topic.

I think that Baltic States should unify their policy and strategy. Something like new Baltic Benelux (the way it should work) or United Baltic States would be good for me. It would be more easy to achieve some strategical points while doing that with cooperation. We must unify our potential.

As much as I know Estonia has signed Cooperation Agreement with ESA, Lithuania has decided to join ESA and will work that way. What about Latvia?

But what is the real state of the space industry in the Baltics?
Space industry is very wide concept. You can start with IT, navigation systems, biology, logistics, etc.

Space industry does not mean all you can do is to build satellites, rockets (even there you need IT).

Anyway, here is more info about "Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology":

where this is located?

It is located near a small city called Molėtai.

I Heard that theys telescopes are the largest in europe or smthing and that this is the only cosmo........museum in the world ...or smthing,

Thats correct! They claim to have one of the biggest telescope in Europe which is designed for spectators. They also claim that "Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology" is unique and the only such a kind of museum in Europe.

Cool, I might go and visit it when it's open.

You are welcomed to do this at any time. Cause it is already opened and working :) They have many programmes designed for people with wide range of interests. They even have a special programme for the newlyweds

They have launched an internet site www.cosmos.lt (http://www.cosmos.lt). Unfortunately, it is only in lithuanian at the moment.

OMG!
It looks like a bus from the 70ies!
Seriously, it can't be a bit comfortable. Just look at the wheels, like a steam train. Nothing modern with it, as bumpy as Soviet trains have always been.
Why on Earth throw away money on that piece of junk if you want to retain old and attract new passengers???? :ohno:
Even the refurbished trains from RVR are better than that.
This just has an aura of Soviet quality.
The ugly tiny narrow doors with steep steps that make a young boy feel like an old man.
And the clothes line! Thought that disappeared in the 40ies.

I'm really glad they decided to take the Czech double decker for the Vilnius-Kaunas line, it seems to be a quite ok train. :okay:

The problem in the railway coach industry here is maybe the lack of vision. because with similar budget, they can do better. Believe me, RVR has good engineers, but if direction and government does not support them, they will not go anywhere. The same for Russian industry. The vision is limited. They answer todays needs. No more, they dont believe very much in public transport except if they can fill a bit the pockets of some limited people. Sad... Governments does not work well for citizens here... Sad...

Do you know how much costs an EMU (Electrical Mobile Unit) from RVR or from Russia or Poland? We will be able to compare with western material then...

Bad management is definitely the Achilles heel of Russia. And it is penetrated through all the country. No matter where will you take a look, you will find a bad management - starting from municipalities and ending in Gazprom :) Russia is sitting on the ark full of gold but... as people here are saying - umom Rosiju nepaniat :)

Concerning a price of EMU from different countries, I don't know them but I bet that LG (Lithuanian Railways) did a big mistake by choosing the cheapest. We are too poor to buy a bad one and keep fixing it through out its life-cycle :)

Russian industry in that area targeted for huge domestic market mainly, foreign contrasts are not that important.
Spending millions of euros for designing new trains in Baltics makes sense only if you are going to establish mass production of them, but since home market is limited and export is not clear due to high competition on it, private investors won't spend money here.
For European bureaucrats that could be more cost effective to give that money e.g. to Siemens, so I don't see future here.
So choose what you want :) this is up to you :)

Micrav
December 29th, 2008, 01:54 PM
Here I am not even thinking about competing with Siemens or Alstom, but knowing Russian and Slavian mentality of people who likes beautiful objects, it is only a question of time. (Soviet mentality was braking things and did not see the need to improve things beside political propaganda, in mentality, soviet thinking was not designed to improve things by the top but by the bottom.) I believe soviet era is over, turn the page, the current inherited railway industry has to adapt fast to improve.

Russian industry is grouped in one big network "Transmasholding". Polish are manufacturing for western Europe too. Ukraine, big manufacturer of trains is in crisis and RVR is alone in this big eastern world, no real big partnership if I am correct.

So for me, the only way to standup out of the crowd for companies like RVR is to be truly innovative and creative and get orders and capital from customers outside Latvia, Lithuania and Belarussia! No other solution! They need design to give added value to their same raw materials :)

Lets think positive, as long as there is still life, there is still hope that somebody will reverse the steam

Seriously, it can't be a bit comfortable. Just look at the wheels, like a steam train. Nothing modern with it, as bumpy as Soviet trains have always been.

That's the way it is. LG must be really angry on itself when they decided to buy this transmasholding junk. Transmasholding took an old base, made a new awful design and put some electronic that doesn't work in it. What they got is RA2. A noisy, no acceleration, lack of suspension, keep at a distance design, engine sounds like chainsaw --> peace of cheap engineering. I had a ride with RA2, even old Hungary D1's are smoother and quieter. LG drivers say it's far from good. LG decided to buy from Russia and got a big headache: trains that spend more time in depot than on track, it's far from cheap. Sad but it's true, every word of it.

Of course RA2 was maid for RZD but not for export and that's why RA2 is like this and not like that.

LDZ is also not a solution for rolling stock replacement. Their trains are in 70ties. Alstom, Siemens and some other producers that have same level make trains for 2009 and future.

If Finland, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland or Austria would make an order for trains from Transmasholding and use them not sell them then Transmasholding makes trains that are good for buy. That's the way it is.

LG has maid some great work on infrastructure. Thay have great tracks. Now they need some great passenger rolling stock next to Siemens ER20s, Catepillar 2M62s and CKD EMU's. Maby RA2's were bought for see what Transmasholding can make. Unfortunately they got disappointment from Transmasholding and new order will come for real trains.

This train isn't the best and criticized a lot at Russian forums as well. But it is always better to work incrementally, improving the quality step-by-step than do nothing. If Lithuania has a complains, they should be fixed by Russian side :).
BTW, RA2 is in "tram" category, not in "train", the same company assemblies "real" trains like this:

The last train ED4M Airo (http://www.tmholding.ru/main/catalog/products/2735/7184/8003) is the same RVR ER2T with some minimal changes (some visual , some under hood). Practically all Russian electric trains is based on RVR ER concept (except some demo trains). I believe that new electric and diesel trains with better traction motors, better suspension and modern interior (like in DR1B (http://parovoz.com/newgallery/pg_view.php?ID=166218&LNG=RU#picture) for BE and modernized ER trains) will be far more better answer to russian tmx trains for baltic market.

This diesel RA-2 works in Volgograd. Capacity is 222 seats, overall capacity is 560.
Gas usage is 40 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km, this is approximately 3-4 times less than the old one.
2 hours ride cost 92 rubles or 2,5 euro.

I'm not sure if he was talking about Guggenheim museum. But this project will be started to realize not earlier than in 2013. The feasibility study has already been done, it shows positive results. But at the context of present crisis we don't have enough capital to realize this project (plus it's expensive enough). So we will have to wait.

Maybe, in his mind he had this one:

http://www.vildaiva.lt/pics/objektai/200609_dailes_galerija_2.jpg

^^ It's The National galery which is expected to be finished at the summer of 2009. I hope that's the case, even regardless the crisis.

Concerning The Guggenheim museum I bet until the 2010 we will here nothing about it. My wish is that even despite the crisis the goverment at the end of the day will decided to go on with it. And those jews from New York and russians from Sant Peterburg will signed up, as well :dj: Let's hope :|

Do you have any idea if 4 real lanes highway is planned to be completed from Kaunas to Poland and from Kaunas to Latvian border through Panevezis?

Guess, you are talking about "Via Baltica"

Don't know much about the current progress of it. Maybe, other Lithuanian members know more.

Thanks, yes I was speaking about the Guggenheim and also a real Via Baltica.
This road is not safe enough and not big enough to allow development of real transport and Tourism through all Baltics states.

whatever...

The feasibility study showed great potential and a very much positive outcome the city would experience afterwards. I have a copy of it somewhere in my computer...

Construction is due to start in 2011.

Vilnius is a very beautiful and attractive city, it would be great to have such attraction, but like I say for Latvia, you Baltic people have to learn to sell yourselves outside your borders, and it starts with your behaviour when you travel abroad (driving reasonnably, making efforts to try to understand, respects rules and others, this is one of the ways to be more and more attractive). This rule is also good for Russians travelling abroad and Americans, respect Europeans, Africans, Asians and don't impose your views and your attitudes, you know they are not shared. If everybody would have a bit more respect towards another, everything would be better in this world. I think this should be written on posters all over the world... :) RESPECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS!

Back to topic, I wanted to say tha Lithuania should tour Europe and Tourism fairs of Europe to present the wonders of Lithuania, this is a magic way to improve a lot business and tourism in the Baltics, but it seems that responsables here in the Baltics don't know it yet...

Another way is through foreigners living permanently in the Baltics, they are the first ambassadors of the country in which they live and when they come back to their home land for private or business, they should have support from local authorities to encourage them to speak about the place they live in :) Maybe one reception a year for foreigners in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia is enough to stimulate positively this attitude. This also sharing culture!

Ah also, stop corruption, this gives a really bad image outside the country and brakes normal people, tourists and investors to come here for the good reasons.

We need to put our countries in the news of western EUrope also, I wa reading Belgian news, no one info about the riots around parlaments in Latvia, Bulgaria and Lithuania, this is 3 European countries where symbols of democracy have been attacked! In the Baltics, we must speak out and show ourselves positively across Europe, so people will come here for positive reasons! That is the worst I wish the Baltics! :)

What a hell are you talking about?:ohno:
Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians do respect other nations, also are friendly and helpful. Baltic people give more than you can expect:)

About investors
Of course they are welcome. But not the ones who come here to make money for bad usage or whose intrests differ extremely from baltic intrests.

But first of all Baltic's must defenetely support their own industy and agriculture. I don't know if Vilnius has a great farmer's market? But if hasn't then I'm sure they would like to have one. Market is a real place for marketing. Everibody would like to buy products from producers. If I buy from market then I mostly know who I'm paying to.

I agree that Vilnius is great city. I like Vilnius because of it's park's are like real nature(the way the nature lives and must live) and there is lot's of space in cityspace.

Europans are used to travel by plane and train. Baltics air market is growing well but there is lot's to do on railways side. There even is no train connection from Vilnius to Riga nor overnight service to Warsawa. Railways have forgotten north - south axis.

After seeing that everybody is hungry of projects I'll add this.

Biržai castle arsenal is being rebuilt on existing fundament. It will be one store renaissance building (Although it is argued that before destruction second floor was being built). After this we are also planning to rebuil the castle gates.

http://www.selonija.lt/wp-content/uploads/birzu-p-maketas_1_200804191-590x413.jpg

Arsenal is that big building on the left.

p.s. Maybe I will make some photos soon. ;)

These bastions exist in their original form. They are only grown up with the trees which didn't exist when fortress was functional. There were some efforts to cut them down and return the fortress it's original view, but they were stopped by the greens.

You can see those bastions in this areal photo:
