View Full Version : My pictures from my trip in Macedonia
dejan October 9th, 2006, 04:50 PM Well i think it is about time i post some pictures that i took while in Macedonia from June 26 to September 24:)
They'll be from Skopje and Ohrid since i didn't have the opportunity to go else where:( (I did go to Vienna on my way to Skopje, only went into the city for a few hours, i'll post those another time)
The first part will be from Skopje, mainly the central city part. Later days i'll post better ones from Skopje and Ohrid. But these are just to get the ball rolling.

no kidding. I got a weekend house in Sopiste. they got some big plans for that area for very nice residential suburbs we'll see what happens.
great pics BTW. but aren't some of them repeating?

VelesHomais October 11th, 2006, 01:46 AM Beautiful country. So the infrastructure is better than in Bulgaria?
Realek October 11th, 2006, 02:22 AM It used to be but they are closing the gap in the last decade. I hope the new government here will keep its promise about increasing the capital expenditures. Also some EU funds are now more accesable by Macedonia since it gained the candidate status.
Similos October 11th, 2006, 03:09 AM Yeah, it used to be, back in Yugoslavia days...but now Bulgarians are catching up, while among the ex-YU states, Macedonia counts for the country that , up to recently, has kind of been "standing still":(
But good photos , and hopefully there will be a lot more progress.
I heard our Delta is in talks to build a "DeltaCity" somewhere in Skoplje (like they are doing in Belgrade & Podgorica), anyone have more news about that?
By the way, one thing has been bugging me lately...when is KK Rabotnicki joining the Adriatic League already?:bash:
Luka October 11th, 2006, 03:12 AM Very nice photos. I hope there will be some skyscrapers soon :D
Similos October 11th, 2006, 03:21 AM After my visit to Ljubljana the previous summer, Skoplje is now the obvious next on the list:yes: Maybe as soon as this winter:)
Realek October 11th, 2006, 04:07 AM Yeah, it used to be, back in Yugoslavia days...but now Bulgarians are catching up, while among the ex-YU states, Macedonia counts for the country that , up to recently, has kind of been "standing still":(

Where did you get the idea that we were standing still??? We havent done that much, but compared to the rest ex-yu we have moved quite a lot. Excluding Slovenia and Croatia we did more than the others Im sure. For example when we left the federation we had around 100km freeway, and we should have 250km in a year time. We also built a ton of new local roads to support the decentralisation. A very expensive railway line towards BG was started but unfortunately its on stand-by now. Anyway quite a lot has been invested in it already. An oil pipeline from Solun to Skopje and a Gas pipeline from Bulgaria to Skopje. A huge dam has been built on river Treska and a lot of hydro-systems all over the country. A lot of high voltage powerlines also... It might not seem a lot but when you take into account the population and the area of the country it is not that bad.
About delta-city. I hear a lot of rumors for a long time now, but nothing certain yet. I hope they finalize their plans soon.
About Rabotnicki I really dont know. They arent that good anyway at the moment. Our national team is pretty good, but our league is under average :(
GreatMakedon October 13th, 2006, 08:51 PM Nice pics Dejan, although u repeated the same ones over n over again ;)
Gorgon October 13th, 2006, 10:23 PM Among the few things I learned from a Macedonian friend of mine (Aneta) were: 1. Macedonians really like to watch their soap-operas (telenovelas, eh? do you guys have any Colombian soap-operas like Cafe or Betty la fea? Aneta told me she used to watch soap-operas a lot, but mainly Mexican and Venezuelan...). 2. Caco (that's "what" in English, right?), that word sounds so funny! 3. People from that area (Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia) have an excellent accent to pronounce Spanish that sometimes you don't know they just know a couple of sentences... Go Macedonia!
dejan October 14th, 2006, 05:39 AM Aneta! That's my sisters name lol did you speak to my sister?:D
And i'll post more better pictures today everyone, from Ohrid:)

Yeah, my cousin told me that a German investor wants to build some sort of suburb called 'Sonchev Grad' 'Sun City' and he took me to the place where it should be built...well only wealthy people will be able to afford houses there and the view lol
Btw, sorry about some of the pictures repeating, i thought i deleted them so i uploaded them again...but they're still there...won't happen again!

Hey dejan, sorry for my delay in replying. Unless your sister is married (to a Macedonian guy), and immigrated to Canada in 2002, it's unlikely we're talking of the same person. Is Aneta an uncommon name or something? BTW I remember this Ukraninan lady telling me that her name, Oksana (spelling:dunno:), was pretty uncommon, but then I ended up meeting like 4 Oksanas in less than a year!
Ps. This is the kind of picture I like. Excellent scenery, and pretty girls :) (probably tourists, eh?).

Nah we're not talking about the same Aneta hehe she's not married and doesn't live anywhere close to Canada lol, more like Australia:) Yeah Aneta isn't that much of a common name, i've rarely heard of it. However mine is common:) I guess it was just your luck meeting those Oksanas:p hehe

I'd say transitional. To be developing it should have been undeveloped before that which was not. However the transition is taking awfully long.

probably have in mind that it was constructed in the beggining of the 70s and it was on par with any western shopping center altough its concept is different. It's opened and its intended to be part of a pedestrian zone cause it's on a major route from the train station to the central square. So basicaly it's a pedestrian area with shops.
The 'coolest' trivia about it is that when it was build it had more escalators than all the rest of Yugoslavia :D. It's location the proximity to the river quay, the centreal pedestrian zone, a nice central park still give it lots of importance to the city and is always jammed with people. Alotugh it's old now it's well maintained and it looks good but it's obvious it's from another era.

Cool. I love the escalator trivia. TZUM (www.tzum.bg), the central department store is Sofia, was the only store with escalators in Bulgaria and I always thought that they were so cool. Every time my parents would take me to Sofia as a kid, I would go to TZUM and ride the escalators. Loved it!!!Those were the days.

 yeah. in a way we all miss'em don't we. In former Yugoslavia we always had these rides for kids, like a horse or a car where U sit in it, insert a coin and it basically shakes around and makes sounds for 3-4mins. That was my highlight in malls and shopping centers. Did U have those things in BG?
EDIT: I'm not sure if I phrased it right. The trivia is that this single shopping mall in Skopje had more escalators than all the other escalators in all other places in YU put together. That's why it's so cool :D.

Yes, but they were always a lot more popular on the coast because of the tourists.

Yes its true about Singelic
About the doors  Yes there are a lot and I dont think they can be counted coz they are at every step. This is not Afganistan man... And those doors are not such a incredible achivement to have.

ATM is a much more sophistaced thing than an automatic door man. ATMs were introduced in MK with the reintroduction of credit cards (till 1991 I think we hade only American Express and VISA than we had nothing for several years and MasterCard was than introduced in 1996 by Komercijalna Banka).
Anyways automatic door is only a door with a movement sensor really the cheapest thing in the world. One that imidiately comes to my mind is the Pelagonija building cause my aunt used to work there, but there were more I just never thought of counting them

well for bulgaria yes! and i was just making comment that in Yugoslavia only Mcdonald's in Belgrade in 80īs had a automatic door.
GreatMakedon December 16th, 2006, 03:05 PM This is funny: since when is prosperity measured by the number of automatically opening doors?
And where did i say that auto/doors are a measure of prosperity?? it was just a simple question, i was curious to know if they are common in MK nowdays since they wernt 10years ago. However little technological things like this somtimes do indicate the technological development of a country. Here is another question; Do people in MK get their pays in cash or do they go straight to the bank via employer?
Realek December 16th, 2006, 04:02 PM GM please dont take it as an offense, but you obviously have little knowledge of the situation in Macedonia. People have been getting their salaries on bank accounts since the mid-80's. About the doors, I hate to bring it up again, but I dont agree that it is such an indicator of development. As it has been said already, they are a very simple thing. Anyhow, those doors were present in large numbers since the 80's especially in administrative buildings of companies. Just because you didnt see them it doesnt mean thet they werent there.
GreatMakedon December 16th, 2006, 10:56 PM Realek... regarding my knowledge of Macedonia, its better than most people who live there, believe it or not.
People have not been getting their salaries on bank accounts, Gruevski is trying to implement this procedure in the public administration at the moment but has serious oposition regarding this for some reason. Everyone in MK ive ever spoken to gets payed in cash on hand. Im very well aware of the situation in MK and the rest of the balkans and i can honestly say that technologically wise they were miles behind from "the west" until a few years ago, now things are improving though but the balkan countries still have a long way to go, except maybe Greece. If you think im clueless, your wrong coz im very well aware of such issues, e.g how most of the rural municipalities in Macedonia still lack computers and do their work on paper.
P.S: You guys took the question regarding the auto/doors way out of context. It was just a simple question thats all.
Realek December 16th, 2006, 11:19 PM @ GM
You are confusing the issues man. Gruevski is trying to implement mandatory credit cards for employees of the public administration, nothing more. Most people have been receiving their salaries on bank accounts since the mid 80's like I said. That was when they introduced checks for payments and money withdrawals in every day life. Since then a lot of people have obtained credit cards also. Gruevski just wants to make this obligatory for the administration.
dewrob December 16th, 2006, 11:20 PM @GM
GM U mixed up things. Public administration has always been getting their salaries through bank accounts even in communism. What Gruevski is trying to launch now is a national card (debut or credit card not sure) in connection to the accounts of the administration in order to increase the "bezgotovinsko plakjanje" and decrease the amount of denars out in the open.
Most of the comanies who pay the taxes for their workers (pension, social and health insuraance) also give out salaries through banks. It's the black market labour that gets the money on hand mostely.
dewrob December 16th, 2006, 11:20 PM Damn REALEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U beat me by 1 minute again
Realek December 16th, 2006, 11:31 PM ^^

GreatMakedon December 17th, 2006, 09:29 PM Ok guys im sorry, i misunderstood it then. You must be right about the black market thing, they get cash on hand.. but my uncle works in Zastava Ohrid and he gets payed in cash aswell, along with a few more people i know so i guess i assumed thats how most people get payed. I was confused at first at what exactly Gruevski is trying to do, so i assumed that he was trying to get the administration to accept their wages to go straight to a bank account.. although i still dont get what exactly he is trying to do, even after dewrob and realek tryed to explain it to me.

yeah it's not expencive Marek from what I know rather similar to Slovakia (cause a friend was in Bratislava recently).
Bread is 0.3-0.5EUR
Beer (0.5l) is 0.3-0.5EUR in a store and 1-1.5EUR in a pub/bar/cafe.
Coffies are around 0.9-1.2EUR
any other prices U want to know U can ask.

Reconstructed church of Saints Panteleimon and Kliment Ohridski. On this site over a thousand years ago Saint Kliment established his literary school and a hospital. Construction is starting for a Theology faculty and floating museum around this year to resurrect Saint Kliment's old ideas. I really like the way this Church has been styled...inside some old parts are retained while in other areas it is entire new....there are windows on the floor that shows small type tunnels that seem to be the foundations

dewrob February 17th, 2007, 09:44 PM btw was Macedonia before part of Yugoslavia?
yeah it was Marek.
and I think that in Macedonia life going Easy , is hard to live there?
it's not easy, but not particulary harder than in most EE countries. But U got it right, life is going easy, the mentality compensates for the harsh economic conditions. U can hear people whine often, but at the end of the day they still enjoy life.
dejan February 18th, 2007, 02:44 AM great pics Dejan is from your trip or you living in Macedonia?
Thanks Marek, and yes it's from my trip to Macedonia, i live in Australia.

nuevo-chicago January 14th, 2008, 03:59 AM yeah it's not expencive Marek from what I know rather similar to Slovakia (cause a friend was in Bratislava recently).
Bread is 0.3-0.5EUR
Beer (0.5l) is 0.3-0.5EUR in a store and 1-1.5EUR in a pub/bar/cafe.
Coffies are around 0.9-1.2EUR
any other prices U want to know U can ask.
How about hotels, hostels? The price of a cab fare and can people speak english? Are people friendly?
TEKKEN January 17th, 2008, 01:02 AM Very nice pictures of Macedonia
dewrob February 11th, 2008, 06:36 PM How about hotels, hostels? The price of a cab fare and can people speak english? Are people friendly?
hotels are expensive in general. U can probably find decent accommodation nowdays for ~30-40EUR.
Cab fares are dirt cheap. Just make sure they rub their meters, cause otherwise they might rip you off.
People are definitely friendly and U won't have problem finding people who speak English. Most young people do but it's common among older ones as well (40-50 age).
BiH-x February 11th, 2008, 07:29 PM Great photos Dejan! Macedonia is beautiful!
Rebasepoiss February 13th, 2008, 08:19 PM :) I'm pleasantly surprised. I somehow thought that Macedonia is a poor country, but from your pics, it doesn't really look much worse than Estonia.
Verso February 13th, 2008, 11:32 PM Aww, so beautiful! :) Too bad there's no Dejan on the pix. :ohno: :P

Ivanski March 10th, 2008, 02:33 AM Pics are nice. Some very good nature shots. But..
It used to be but they are closing the gap in the last decade. I hope the new government here will keep its promise about increasing the capital expenditures. Also some EU funds are now more accesable by Macedonia since it gained the candidate status.
Dude it's time to leave the Yugo-dimension and get back to reality.

Umm, Macedonia has more motorways considering its size than Bulgaria.
Ivanski March 10th, 2008, 05:28 PM Bulgaria motorways:
sections in service:
Trakiya - 280km
Hemus - 130km
Struma -20km
Cherno more- 10km
Maritza - 40km
Total : 480km - this is data from 2006 and 2007 without the sections that should be ready by the end of 2008.
How did you count that we have less motorways? What should it means considering its size. It's not my problem that you're both livin in midget countries.
And let Realek tell when was built the last rail road in Macedonia .
Bulgaria has several harbours and shipyards on Danube, two big on Black sea and massive railroad system + developed air transport.
And some dude is telling me that we are "closing the gap" because Macedonia should have about 240 km motorway by the end of the year. For a country with 1-2 airports, without any transport rivers or seaports that should be some unheard of achievement.
And that's of course if we talk about transport infrastructure. I don't think that we could even compete on any other infrastructure since Macedonia already has a "big dam".
Oh now I see "Ljubljana" another one from the matrix
Verso March 10th, 2008, 10:26 PM Total : 480kmAs much as the midget Slovenia. Interesting. :)
How did you count that we have less motorways? What should it means considering its size. It's not my problem that you're both livin in midget countries. It's not my problem you live in a huge country (midget compared to Russia). Are you saying that India has a better motorway infrastructure than Bulgaria just b/c it has more motorways overall?
Bulgaria has several harbours and shipyards on Danube, two big on Black sea and massive railroad system + developed air transport.Well, Macedonia obviously cannot have any port on the Black- or any other sea, and neither on the Danube or any other large river, right? Considering air transport, they have intl. airports, don't they? And railways to Serbia and Greece. Route towards Albania isn't so important yet anyway, and there also isn't any railway to Bulgaria (except through Serbia), just like there's no railway from Bulgaria to Macedonia and Albania (except through Serbia).
dewrob March 10th, 2008, 10:43 PM ^^
Verso are you actually gonna get into this? :)
Ivanski March 10th, 2008, 10:46 PM Exactly because Macedonia doesn't have any harbours or seaports that means it's normal to stake on highways. I think I wrote it clear enough. But I don't see how their transport infrastructure is more developed. I'm not saying that Macedonia is rail-roads isolated. I just asked when was built the last rail road there. So there's no need to interpret my words.
I'm saying that Bulgaria has a massive inner rail-road system. I guess many times bigger that one in Slovenia. I think you know that most of the cargo transportation anywhere is made by ships and trains.
And I'm glad you have 480 km highways ,but your fridges still suck :D
^^Verso are you actually gonna get into this? :)
Yeah, like I'm the one who started. Funny guys.
CrazySerb March 10th, 2008, 11:12 PM @ Verso :okay:
But like dewrob said, don't waste your time with this clown.
Ivanski March 10th, 2008, 11:17 PM Interesting words from the Serbian Asterix.
If I'm clown you're an entire freak show :weird:
edit: I'm out of the discussion coz we're ruin the thread. But I'm not the one who started the analysis at first place.
mojaBL March 10th, 2008, 11:41 PM ^^ really a clown...
u came only to provoke?
blue79 March 10th, 2008, 11:49 PM Bratstvo,Jedinstvo finally!?! Man i have tears in my eyes!

Verso March 10th, 2008, 11:52 PM edit: I'm out of the discussion coz we're ruin the thread. But I'm not the one who started the analysis at first place.Realek explained the situation very well.
Exactly because Macedonia doesn't have any harbours or seaports that means it's normal to stake on highways.Yeah, b/c Bulgarians take boat to get to Vienna or Istanbul. :hilarious
I think I wrote it clear enough. But I don't see how their transport infrastructure is more developed. In today's world roads are the ones really important (and HSR, but Bulgaria doesn't have that either) and Macedonia clearly has more motorways.
I'm not saying that Macedonia is rail-roads isolated. I just asked when was built the last rail road there. So there's no need to interpret my words.Who cares when the last railway was built, important is what's at hand. And yes, Bulgarian railway network is better than the Macedonian one, but as I said, roads are more important.
I'm saying that Bulgaria has a massive inner rail-road system. I guess many times bigger that one in Slovenia.Considering both countries' sizes - no.
And I'm glad you have 480 km highways ,but your fridges still suck :DThat's why Gorenje exports 99 %. :)
Ivanski March 10th, 2008, 11:53 PM Yeah, b/c Bulgarians take boat to get to Vienna or Istanbul. :hilarious
I'm talking about cargo transports smartguy. I guess the 99% export of Gorenie goes with Zastava cars  And we have enough roads besides motorways, and far more complicated relief. And we have enough transport connections to Instanbul and Viena including roads and rail roads.
sorry last post
blue79 March 10th, 2008, 11:57 PM Verso just don't take it too serious man,cos I see that you start to write some major bullshit...
Verso March 10th, 2008, 11:58 PM ^ Like?
mojaBL March 11th, 2008, 12:06 AM Verso obviously u donīt know those kind. It is useless.
blue79 March 11th, 2008, 12:12 AM Well, don't get me wrong but from post to post one starts to feel the "Yugo arrogance".
And yes Macedonia has more motorways than Bulgaria and Serbia country size...
Verso March 11th, 2008, 12:17 AM Well, don't get me wrong but from post to post one starts to feel the "Yugo arrogance".
What "Yugo arrogance"? All I see is "Bugo arrogance". :D All Realek said is that Macedonia's infrastructure is still better than Bulgaria's, but that Bulgaria is closing the gap anyway, so what's the problem?
Ivanski March 11th, 2008, 12:17 AM blue79 you're right.
And also Serbia has 100km more expressways than Bulgaria but 500km less rail roads. But I think that doesn't matter in this thread- the important think is to talk how Bulgaria is far more undeveloped in transportation than Macedonia. I think that was the point of the analysis to start.
"Bugo" - haha go cry over some Tito portrait.
Verso March 11th, 2008, 12:20 AM ^ Yeah, started by a Ukrainian...
Ivanski March 11th, 2008, 12:23 AM Remainings from the Panslavism bullshit may be?
blue79 March 11th, 2008, 12:33 AM What "Yugo arrogance"? All I see is "Bugo arrogance". :D All Realek said is that Macedonia's infrastructure is still better than Bulgaria's, but that Bulgaria is closing the gap anyway, so what's the problem?
First what "better infrastructure" means-better as the condition of the infrastructure,or it's density,or both,or...?
Verso March 11th, 2008, 01:02 AM ^ Look, Realek said that Macedonia's infrastructure had USED to be better than Bulgaria's, but the gap is pretty much closed now. I really don't see any problem here.
Remainings from the Panslavism bullshit may be?Yes, including Bulgarians.
Ivanski, was this your last post here?
Anyway, I'm outta here...
Ivanski March 11th, 2008, 01:07 AM Bulgarians were completely f*cked by the Panslavism political flows , but let's not turn the thread into history.

Zanovijetalo August 28th, 2009, 03:33 PM Closed due to "inactivity" and constant fights with Greeks and not just them. Singidunum will know more, he posted on this issue a couple of times.
