Looks to be 8 or so stories by now, look at the building in the background of the image, I think it's the tower (is it, zorg?).

no because the tower will have a round shape and the building in the background has a square shape

OK then this is really slow progress on this tower. I saw it in person this July and it was a busy site, steel all on the ground and welding everywhere but foundation wasn't done. Hopefully by now at least the foundation and basement's done.

Tianjin doesn't have enough skyscrapers, hopefully this will make a big impact on the skyline as Tianjin Centre is a huge ugly shell in downtown as it was on hold when I went there.

Tianjin Center is in fact under construction. It's being converted into a Raffles Hotel. The Tianjin WTC, on the other hand, is stalled, and probably won't be restarted all that soon.

Wow, blue sky in Tianjin (early morning?), but slow progress :(! Clashman, are you a nankai（南开大学） or tianjin（天津大学） university student in Tianjin (my house in Tianjin is at Tianjin university)?

No, but I take classes, (nominally), at TNU 天津师范大学, at the Balitai Campus. Tianjin's blue sky days are actually getting more and more regular, but there's still a long ways to go. Also, this was late afternoon, around 5, not early morning. The effect is still the same, though.

Yeah, I thought that because 29 out of 30 days I was there, there was smoggy sky except for the early morning.

great update clashman. Tianjin is booming but need more highrises to be one of the best in China.

Didn't all the posters around the project say “酒店” (hotel) with a render of one of the side towers? I think there are two hotels in this project, and both are in the side towers. I'm pretty sure this is an office tower, fitting for the tallest tower of a "world financial center."

sounds like 71. alot of architects/developers include basements with overall floor count. you virtually have o see plans to decifer exact count.

I could be wrong on this, but doesn't it appear that this is an all-steel beam construction? Wouldn't that make it a bit unique, since almost every other supertall going up right now is either concrete or has a concrete core. Am I wrong here?

Does anyone have any idea what glazing for the tall tower will be like? Will it be same as on the shorter block? If so how about those dark gray elements (btw what are they?), whill those also be present on the ribs of the tower?

more like 25 min journey from Beijing, particularly taking into account that it is built right in from to f the Tianjin railway station to which CRH from Beijing arrives - just across HaiHe river...

^^well, sort of. It takes 30 mins to go from train station to train station, but to get to the train stations usually would take longer on both ends.

And for the glazing for the main tower, we all have no idea except the renders.

It's actually 4 connected towers, and the name is 百货大楼 (Department Store Tower), built around 2002. It is built next to Tianjin's first skyscraper, which was built in the 1920s I think.

Add Tianjin, Chongqing, Shenyang and Shenzhen to that list. Beijing isn't in a boom anymore though, at least for Chinese standards.

Wow they're going up fast! How many floors do they usually add per week?

1-3, depending on the week and the difficulty of the floor (mech floors take longer). Recently they seem to be going at warp speed ever since the side towers were topped out, they're building 3 floors at a time!

how does a building not have a core?

It has lift shafts and emergency stairs etc but the defined structural core is sort of hidden You can see it in this picture (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=34367322&postcount=199) posted by BarbaricManchurian on 30 March.

Actually it doesn't have core... well at least not a core like in many other skyscrapers I've seen...
There is no solid concrete thingie inside...
what could be passed as a core is an inner radius of columns so, I guess the whole tining is constructed as a hallow tube (I mean that is how the rigidity is achieved)
This doesn't come all that well on photos, but it is very obvious when you walk around it... Or to be precise when on walked around it... I mean when tower wasn't quite as tall and you could see more through it, so to say.

the red columns are the "core" there aren't really any walls between them just some (horizontal in the image) beams. The space between them prolly get filled later bu the wall isn't really load barring o, just "cosmetic"

This tower isn't on hold. We were referring to another one. I'll try to take some newer pictures of it this week.

In the first picture, you can see that the Jin Wan development is starting to rise above the local area. Also, in the 2nd and 3rd, Hutchinson Wampoa seems to be reaching ground level.

is the area where these buildings are located considered Tianjin's official cbd? are they near to where the 117 tower will be?

Tianjin seriously has about 17 different CBDs, although this tower is in an area I at least would consider "downtown". China 117, is in a completely different area, on the outskirts of the city. Yujiapu Supertall is even further away, in Tanggu. It is reasonably close to the "Nanjing Lu" supertall, probably about 15 minutes by foot, and there are a fair amount of tall buildings being built around the area, although most of it is still European style colonial buildings.
