AMMAN — The Ministry of Transport on Thursday qualified six consortiums to bid for a tender to construct a new terminal at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), a ministry official said.
The three-year 90,000 square metre expansion project is aimed at upgrading the airport to meet the expected increase in passenger traffic over the next 30 years.
The winner of the tender, estimated to be in the region of JD200 million, will construct a new terminal adjacent to the existing one on a build, operate and transfer basis, said Amer Hadidi, secretary general of the ministry.
The target date for the final bid is early January 2007, with the winner to be announced by early February.
“We originally had expressions of interest from 22 consortiums, eight of which submitted requests for qualification,” Hadidi told The Jordan Times.
Out of the eight applications, the Project Steering Committee yesterday announced six qualified bidders.
“The qualified bidders are amongst the leading international and regional airport operators, construction companies and financial institutions. Their participation in the Queen Alia International Airport Project affirms the strong interest of international investors in Jordan,” said a ministry statement.
Construction of the new terminal, part of the Kingdom’s bid to become a regional financial, trade and transport hub, is scheduled to be completed by 2010 and will increase the airport’s passenger flow from the current 3.2 million a year to nine million.
This figure is expected to rise to 12.8 million passengers a year by 2030, according to the ministry.
“Our aim is to build a state of the art airport to increase the competitiveness of Jordan as a regional hub and cater for the increase in passengers and tourists for the next thirty years,” said Hadidi.
Jordan, however, faces stiff competition in the region from Gulf States flush with petrodollars and already investing heavily in airport expansion projects, while Dubai has already established itself as a key transit route and financial centre.
Earlier this week, Kuwait announced it intends to plough $2.1 billion into a major expansion project for its international airport. The project includes infrastructure work, expanding the airport’s two runways and building a new runway.
Qatar is also involved in a mega project to build the new Doha International Airport to handle around 12.5 million passengers a year after the first phase of construction, due to be completed by early 2009 at a cost of $2.5 billion. The project is designed to accommodate the new Airbus A380-800 ‘Super Jumbo’.
Phases two and three of the project are projected to cost an additional $5 billion.
“We are not able to compete with airports that are heavily state-subsidised. We are more focussed on the Levant area due to our geographical location, which we believe gives us an advantage over our competitors and will enable us to increase long haul flights to the Far East,” said Hadidi.
QAIA opened in 1983 and in 2005 handled around 3 million passengers.
The six qualified bidders
• Alfa Consortium consisting of Aéroports de Paris (France), J&P (Cyprus), ADIC (UAE), Noor (Kuwait) and EDGO (Jordan).
• Amman Airport Partners consisting of Hochtief (Germany), Mubadala (UAE), Saudi Oger (Saudi Arabia), and United Arab Investors (Jordan).
• Celebi Consortium consisting of Celebi Holdings (Turkey), Vienna Airports (Austria), Nurol Construction (Turkey), YDA (Turkey).
• IIG Consortium consisting of IIG (Kuwait), Banco Efisa (Portugal), Soares de Costa (Portugal), and Aeroportos de Portugal (Portugal).
• TAV Consortium consisting of TAV Airports Holding (Turkey), CCC (Greece), and Kawar (Jordan).
• UDCH Consortium consisting of UDCH (Kuwait), KJH (Kuwait) and Malaysia Airports Holding (Malaysia).

sargon May 9th, 2007, 11:57 AM A consortium led by Aéroports de Paris won the tender for the expansion of Jordan's Queen Alia Airport on April 26. The consortium won out over six international groups bidding for the $450m 25-year concession to build and manage the new terminal.
Abu Dhabi Investment Company will have the largest stake, 40%, in the new company that will be established for the airport expansion. Aéroports de Paris, which will operate the new terminal, will have a 5% stake in the company, while Kuwait-based Noor Financial Investments will have a 25% share, Greek-Cypriot company Joannou and Paraskevaides will have 20% and Jordan-based EDGO Ventures will have 10%. The new company is scheduled to complete the terminal by 2008, increasing capacity at the airport from its current 3m visitors a year to 9m.
The aviation industry in the region is currently experiencing rapid growth. Recently released figures by the International Air Transport Association show that the Middle East region witnessed 20.4% year-on-year growth in passenger numbers in the month of March. This is the third straight year that the region has experienced double-digit growth in the aviation industry. Middle East carriers also increased their freight demand with a growth of 12.7% year-on-year in March. Since 2001, the Middle East has increased its share of the global aviation traffic from 5% to 8%.
This has led to ambitious expansion plans for aviation infrastructure in the region. The plans for the expansion of Queen Alia Airport are mirrored by even more aggressive infrastructure investment in the Middle East. This trend has been ongoing with 10m passengers being added in 2005 alone, increasing capacity in the region to 175 million. In 2006, there were 21 ongoing airport projects at an estimated cost of $32bn. Much of this investment is in the Gulf region. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are planning to enhance their aviation capacity in a bid to become a regional aviation hub. Dubai alone is hoping to increase passenger capacity by 168m with the expansion of the current airport and the development of World Central International Airport at Jebel Ali. The combined cost of the two projects is estimated to be $12.2bn. Abu Dhabi is also looking to increase capacity at its airport to 20 million passengers a year with the potential to increase this further to 50 million.
The more modest plans for Queen Alia International in Amman seem to be centred on the country's tourism strategy and a secondary concern with transit passengers. According to statistics from the ministry of tourism and antiquities, there was a 13% increase in the number of tourists visiting the kingdom in 2006, for a total of just over 6.5m visitors to the country last year. Although the average length of stay for each visitor was 4.2 days, the number of same-day visitors increased by 18.3% suggesting that Jordan is indeed becoming a regional transit point for the aviation industry.
As a result of this the national carrier, Royal Jordanian, also has ambitious growth plans. The airline transported 161,000 passengers in March, which was a 23% increase on last year's figure. The company is also making efforts to improve its cargo services with a multi-million dollar investment in upgrading the cargo terminal. This will include renovating the storage facilities as well as overhauling the IT system in the cargo terminal. The privatisation of Royal Jordanian is expected to be complete by the end of 2007 with the initial valuation of the fair price for the company expected to be completed by Citigroup by the end of this month. The government will retain a 26% stake in the company while non-Jordanian ownership will be restricted to 49%.
As the company prepares itself for privatisation, it is also looking to expand its fleet and routes. The airline has eight Boeing 787 orders in the pipeline with an option for four more. These are expected to be operational by 2011-12. The carrier is also looking to expand its network with Budapest and Montreal confirmed as new destinations this year.
Therefore, as Royal Jordanian continues to grow, the expansion of the airport is timely. The company is operating at capacity at the Queen Alia International Airport and will, thus, welcome the plans for the airport as a means of facilitating its own growth. Indeed, the experience of Jordan seems to mirror that of the region as the Middle East continues to witness strong growth in the aviation sector.

AMMAN - The developer of Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) is negotiating with the government over a plan to expand the airport’s overall landscape from 86,000 square metres (sq.m) to 100,000 sq.m.
The Airport International Group (AIG), which is carrying out the improvements and the rehabilitation process at QAIA, has addressed the government to approve the move which would send the opening date of the new facility six months forward, a senior official at AIG said on Monday.
“The extension will increase the overall cost of the QAIA makeover, it will not place any additional financial burdens on the government,” AIG CEO Curtis Grad told reporters during a press tour aimed to showcase the latest developments at the existing terminals, along with construction progress of the new terminal.
Grad said that despite the global financial downturn, QAIA continues to witness strong growth with an exceptionally strong fourth quarter of 2008, indicating that passenger volumes for 2008 grew by 16 per cent compared with the previous year.
He added that QAIA enjoys a strong attraction for travellers going east and west across the globe, pointing out to the company’s intermediate strategy to seek more north-south traffic.
“We are anticipating growth of around 2.5 per cent for 2009, which is consistent with IATA’s view that the Middle East region is likely to buck the massive downturn being faced in many other markets,” the CEO said.
He added that QAIA has attracted no less than 23 new air services over the past 12 months through both introduction of new airlines and increased frequencies or routes by the company’s established carriers.
AIG has undertaken an intensive phase of improvements and a range of upgrades to services in the existing terminals, while at the same time progressing the construction of the new terminal.
Renovations plans cover toilets, smoking areas and cleaning services.
Over the coming months, passengers will notice changes to the food and beverage areas, in addition to new services including valet parking, new stands and enhanced banking services, catering to both leisure and business travellers alike, he said.
AIG’s has recently floated tender to attract bidders experienced in the field of food and beverage services, which were won by Jordanian investors representing local and international brands, according to Grad.
During the tour, which covered the existing terminals and the changes at the check-in areas, custom halls, and passengers waiting area, chief engineers at the construction site briefed reporters on the new terminal and the progress achieved.
Scheduled to be fully operational by Spring 2012, QAIA terminal is expected to accommodate over 9 million passengers per year, with the capacity of further expansion to 12 million passengers.
AIG, under the terms of a 25-year concession agreement with the government, is responsible for the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the construction of the new terminal.
AIG is a Jordanian company with private shareholding by Abu Dhabi Investment Company (UAE), Noor Financial Investment Company (Kuwait), Edgo Group (Jordan), Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas), Limited (Cyprus), J&P-Avax (Greece) and Aéroports de Paris Management (France).

Despite the combination of a slowdown in global travel and the outbreak of the so-called "swine flu", Jordan's aviation sector remains in robust health. Construction of a new state-of-the-art terminal at the country's principal airport and market liberalisation are helping the country lay the foundations for future growth.
Given the current climate in the global aviation industry, the sector got off to a good start this year in Jordan. "Passenger movements are up 5.28% over June 2008, with an increase of 1.38% year-to-date over the same period last year. Aircraft movements show even stronger growth, up 12.69% over June 2008 with an increase of 13.39% year-to-date over the same period last year," Curtis Grad, the CEO of Airport International Group (AIG)the strategic investor and operator of Queen Alia International Airport told OBG.
QAIA is the principle gateway into the country and handles over 90% of all air traffic in the kingdom.
The results follow an already impressive performance in 2008 that set a new record in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements. According to AIGAIG figures, 4.4m passengers passed through QAIA in 2008, up 16.0% from 3.8m in the previous year and setting a new record for the airport. Aircraft movements also increased substantially, up 14.9% from 44,700 in 2007 to 51,300 in 2008.
Growth is expected to continue over the next two years, though at a much more stable pace. "We expect growth in passenger numbers of around 2-3% per year in 2009 and 2010, and growth in line with GDP growth after 2010," says Grad.
In addition to the continuing expansion of the Royal Jordanian route network currently under way, QAIA has recently managed to attract a number of new operators, diverse in both business model and geography. Newly launched low-cost carrier flyDubaiflyDubai chose Amman as one of its first two destinations, while premium Kuwaiti carrier Wataniya launched daily services in June. European carriers Austrian Airlines and Hungary's Malev have also introduced new flights this year that expand European connections to and from Jordan. Overall, 20 out of 35 airlines serving QAIAQAIAQueen Alia International Airport
QAIA have increased frequency so far this year, according to AIG.
The numbers make it abundantly clear that the new facilities being built at the airport cannot come soon enough. The current terminal dates back to 1983 and was built to accommodate 3.5m passengers annually. With traffic already having well exceeded that number, passengers and operators alike are looking forward to a new 85,000 sq metre terminal currently under construction and expected to be fully operational by early 2012. The new terminal will have the capacity to handle over 9m passengers annually, with the potential to further expand to 12m.
Such rapid expansion can be in part attributed to the government's policy of deregulation and liberalisation of the aviation industry.
"We have already started implementing an open-skies policy. Many rounds have been conducted with EU delegates to prepare, discuss and negotiate a so-called 'comprehensive agreement', officially called the "Euro- Mediterranean Aviation Agreement", between the European Community and its 27 member states and The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This agreement, which will allow European airlines to fly between Jordan and any EU member state, remove nationality restrictions, aims to further integrate Jordan into the European air transport market. This process of regulatory cooperation ensures the highest levels of safety, security, environmental sustainability of air transport and consumer benefits," the minister of transport, Sahel Majali, told OBG.
Although Aqaba's King Hussein International Airport already has an open-sky policy, further such agreements will be essential to filling up the additional capacity at QAIAQAIAQueen Alia International Airport
QAIA's new terminal which, upon its completion, will be equipped to handle almost three times the number of passengers as the current facility. Some people have voiced concern that Jordan cannot compete against the already established hubs in places like Dubai or Qatar, and that the terminal being built is too large for the Jordanian market. "We won't see QAIA competing directly with the large global hubs like Dubai or Qatar. Our objective is to position QAIA as the hub of choice in the region to feed these larger hubs," argues Grad.
The massive construction and expansion of airport facilities in the region over the last few years, coupled with the increasing number of large long-haul aircraft, has created a great deal of new capacity. Through the expansion of its principle hub and a continuing focus on market liberalisation, Jordan looks set to not only support growing domestic demand but become a funnel for traffic to the larger regional hubs. QAIA will feed the regional traffic that will help fill the seats on all those A380" concludes Grad.
yazm1991 September 29th, 2009, 04:27 AM Old news, but shows that Amman needs a new airport...
July records unprecedented traffic at Queen Alia International Airport, reports AIG
Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian company responsible for rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), has released traffic performance results for the month of July, 2009.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/3471060710_b5e3f3b138.jpg
The results show record breaking volumes in both QAIA passengers and aircraft movements (ACMs) for July 2009, recording an increase of 14.14% with 5,673 ACMs compared to 4,970 ACMs in July 2008.
Monthly passenger volumes topped a half million for the first ever, with 524,626 passengers in July 2009 compared to 478,102 for the same month of last year, registering a year-over-year increase by 9.73%.
Dramatic increases in QAIA flight frequencies and new routes over the past 18 months have been the key drivers behind these record breaking results.
Curtis Grad, Chief Executive Officer of Airport International Group, said:
"This strong performance is an important signal of economic recovery and the ongoing terminal expansion, due for completion in early 2012, will play a key role in positioning QAIA as the gateway of choice in the region."
The rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are well underway with the new passenger terminal extending over 85,000 square meters. AIG, under the terms of a 25-year concession agreement with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is responsible for the operation of the airport, the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the construction of the new terminal.
AIG is a Jordanian company with private shareholding by Abu Dhabi Investment Company (UAE), Noor Financial Investment Company (Kuwait), Edgo Group (Jordan), Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited (Cyprus), J&P-Avax (Greece) and Aéroports de Paris Management (France).

Mr. Curtis GRAD, CEO, Airport International Group - QAIA said: "We expect Phase I of this terminal to be ready by early 2012. It will have a capacity to handle 9 million passengers. The Phase II will be able to handle additional 12 million passengers. We are looking at inbound traffic from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Sharjah and other parts of GCC markets to link up with QAIA and benefit from it. There are already six Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) that have a total of 80 arrivals and departures a week to Amman, Jordan. These are Air Arabia, Jazeera Airways, Bahrain Air, Sama Airlines, Nas Air and Fly Dubai."
During the year, QAIA has witnessed 15% increase in flight volumes, 10% increase in passengers during summer peak and 4% increase in passenger numbers till date.
QAIA said that there is a strong link with the UAE considering that Invest AD, an investment company based in Abu Dhabi hold 38% of its equity, followed by Kuwait's Noor Financial Investments which owns 24% equity.
In his presentation Tim Coombs, Managing Director, Aviation Economics Ltd mentioned that the barriers to start LCC will remain low considering that an airline operating 5 A320 aircraft can be set up with capital of just US$10million.
"The LCC model is well understood, easily copied and globally transferable today. And Hedge Funds / Private Equity industry has surplus funds of US$150 billion. It is easy to start LCC even today," he said.
He said that the development of 17 open-skies bilateral agreements between a number of Arab Civil Aviation Commission (ACAC) Middle Eastern member states such as Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Syria and United Arab Emirates is an important step for LCCs further success in the region.
Mr. Sherif Attia, CEO, Air Cairo said that the year 2008 was very encouraging compared to the previous year. "The increase in number of flights was up by 17%, passenger load was up by 21%, and while Egyptian carriers reaped higher business (19.7%), the foreign carriers also had a good time with business up by 16.2%."
Shashank Nigam, Founder & CEO, SimpliFlying, said that: "Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc) will be the next driving force for LCCs. If Dell can sell US$ 3 million worth of products in a short span of time why can't LCCs take advantage of social media? It is entirely possible to clear distressed inventory on Twitter or Facebook."
On the first day, in his inaugural session Mr. Adel Ali, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Air Arabia, the proponent of LCCs made a strong pitch for Low Cost Airports. Capturing the audience's imagination in his uncanny knack, he said: "This region needs many more low cost airports or secondary airports on the lines of Al Ain Airport. These airports will result in low cost fares to customers."
He also observed that the cost of infrastructure [airport and related services] ought to be reviewed periodically. "Airports charge airlines on the basis of historical data on costs and operations. This is a big hindrance for the growth of LCCs in the region," he said.
'Connectivity Evangelist' Air AsiaX CEO Mr. Azran Osman-Rani made a successful pitch to the audience for the need of 'Low Cost, Long Haul'. Air AsiaX confirmed its maiden plans to fly in to Abu Dhabi, marking its first foray into the Middle East. Mr. Azran also confirmed that the airline has ordered 10 A350 aircrafts recently. He said: "Today LCCs agree that there is great potential for 'connectivity'. The challenge is how to market connectivity as unique selling proposition to customers." He also propagated the huge potential of 'social media' in LCC marketing. "Face Book, Twitter, You Tube etc are great platforms through which LCCs can have low cost marketing efforts."
Mr. Stefan Pichler, CEO, Jazeera Airways who has been into the job barely four months said he was very confident about the region's potential. "The worst seems to be over and I can fairly say that second half of 2009 will be much better than the first half for Jazeera Airways. We are reassessing the India sector considering that there is artificial over capacity on that sector at the moment. However, we will continue with our multi-hub strategy."
Mr. Kevin Steele, Chief Commercial Officer, Sama Airlines, said that Kerala (India) -Saudi Arabia is the largest point-to-point market in the region and Egypt-Saudi Arabia is the largest intra-Middle East point-to-point market. "My question to any LCC is: Where will you put your investments?"
Maher Koubaa, VP, Middle East and Africa, Sabre Airline Solutions presented its survey findings. He said: "Beyond oil prices, customer loyalty and retention, revenue and yield and, network planning and scheduling are the most frequently identified as issues that have an impact on airline from a cost and operations standpoint."
Mr. Walter Prenzler, CEO, Nas Air said that there are three LCCs in Saudi Arabia and there are opportunities for new players. "Apart from the strong home market, Saudi Arabia has geographical location advantage, coupled with huge young local population that has restricted public transportation. In addition, LCCs can leverage religious traffic (Hajj - Umrah) and the labor traffic.
Mr. Steve Knackstedt, Director Airline Business Group, Hahn Air Lines said that "Approximately 60% of airline sales are still taking place through global distribution systems (GDS). Web-based bookings are increasing but it is still a miniscule part of overall ticket sales and it will continue to be like this."
Event organizer Mr. Matthew Wallhead, General Manager Terrapinn (Dubai) Ltd expressed his gratitude to all the spokespersons, attendees, media, sponsors, partners and colleagues who made this event a grand success.
lealfonse October 19th, 2009, 04:16 AM AMMAN (JT) - The total number of passengers travelling through Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) rose by 15 per cent last year, compared to the year before.
During July and August this year, around one million passengers travelled through QAIA, Prime Minister Nader Dahabi said on Sunday.
These figures, in addition to the growing number of carriers operating an increasing number of flights at QAIA, are the principal driving force for the expansion and development of the airport, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, quoted Dahabi as saying.
During a visit to the airport, the premier checked on the progress of the ongoing expansion project. He also stressed the importance of completing the project in a timely manner, reiterating the government’s support for the venture.
Touring the site, Dahabi was briefed by Curtis Grad, chairman of the Airport International Group (AIG), the company implementing the expansion plan, on the first phase of the work.
So far, around 16 per cent of the expansion has been completed while the entire project is scheduled to be completed in March 2012, Grad told the prime minister, who was accompanied by Transport Minister Sahel Majali during the tour. The implementation of the $700 million expansion project will help accommodate the increasing number of passengers and will raise the airport’s capacity to nine million passengers annually, up from three million currently, Grad indicated.
Dahabi was also briefed on the improvements to the current passenger terminals that AIG is currently carrying out.
AIG is a Jordanian company comprising a consortium of Arab and international companies.
In a statement to the press, Majali said the project is proceeding as planned, noting that it is one of the largest public-private partnerships currently being undertaken in the Kingdom.
The government's revenues will be around 54 per cent of the total earnings, Majali noted

yazm1991 October 28th, 2009, 12:59 PM Airport International Group announces record breaking 3rd quarter traffic results
Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian company responsible for rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), has released its 2009 third quarter traffic performance report.
For the first time ever, QAIA handled over 500,000 passengers in both July and August, representing a 10% year-over-year increase. The month of September showed even stronger performance, up 20% from last year. Flight volumes have also shown remarkable growth, reaching 15% above 2008 with no less than 20 airline routes being added or increased in frequency, resulting in 62 additional weekly flights during the summer peak.
Curtis Grad, Chief Executive Officer of Airport International Group said “Undoubtedly, 2009 has been one of the most turbulent and challenging years for the aviation industry, however QAIA has witnessed remarkable traffic growth despite these adverse economic conditions”.
In addition, Mr. Grad commended the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission of Jordan for the air service agreements recently signed with Spain, Kyrgyzstan, the Dominican Republic and Ethiopia during the ICAO air service conference held in Istanbul, which has paved the way for liberalizing air transport between Jordan and these countries.
The US750 million rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are well underway, including construction of a new state-of-the-art 100,000 square meter passenger terminal. AIG, under the terms of a 25-year concession agreement with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is responsible for the operation of the airport, the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the construction of the new terminal.
AIG is a Jordanian company with private shareholding by Invest AD (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Noor Financial Investment Company (Kuwait), Edgo Group (Jordan), Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited (Cyprus), J&P-Avax (Greece) and Aéroports de Paris Management (France).

For some reason I have a feeling that a 9 million passenger terminal will not be large enough. QAIA is witnessing unbelievable growth, and a 9 miilion passenger terminal may not be enough in 2015....

Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian company responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), has signed a tenancy agreement with Space Airlines. The new low-cost carrier will establish its presence at the airport through an office in Terminal 1, in addition to a maintenance shop in the northern apron, starting from 1st December 2009.
Curtis Grad, Chief Executive Officer of Airport International Group commented on this agreement saying, "We are pleased to be signing this agreement with Space Airlines which will further support our ongoing efforts to further develop and diversify air service at QAIA. We look forward to building a long-term and prosperous relationship with Space Airlines."
On his part, Captain Basil Obeidat, Chief Executive Officer of Space Airlines said, "Space Airlines is proud to be signing an agreement with AIG, resulting in the launch of our new services from QAIA, an airport that is witnessing significant growth and tangible increase in traffic. In addition, the capital Amman provides the ideal backdrop, fast becoming a hub and major destination for passengers and airlines from around the world."
Space Airlines will begin its services with charter flights to tourist destinations in Turkey, Egypt, Russia and Bulgaria. The new airline will receive its first aircraft (Boeing 737-400) by the end of the year and commence operations in January 2010.
The $750m rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are well underway, including construction of a new state-of-the-art 100,000 square meter passenger terminal. yazm1991 January 5th, 2010, 01:39 PM AIG and AJIB celebrate the inauguration of Four Seasons Lounge at Queen Alia International Airport
Airport International Group (AIG) and Arab Jordan Investment Bank (AJIB) celebrated the inauguration of the Four Seasons Lounge in the Arrivals hall of Terminal (1) at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA).
The new lounge was launched in a ceremony held on Monday, Dec. 21st 2009, with the attendance of AIG's CEO Curtis Grad, AJIB's General Manager and CEO Hani Al-Qadi and the Hotel Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Amman, Olivier Thomas.
Commenting on the inauguration of the new lounge, Grad said:
"We welcome all the efforts and initiatives taken to elevate the level of service offered at QAIA, as such investment is a sign of market growing interest in QAIA, as we strive to upgrade service levels at the airport by attracting high-quality operators and investors such as AJIB and the Four Seasons."
Al-Qadi emphasized that the launch of this lounge is the result of collaboration between AJIB and Four Seasons Hotel Amman- one that comes as part of both parties' commitment to providing the best possible services to the public in all locations.
"We are pleased that QAIA has become home to this lavish lounge as this reflects a unified strategic vision that is shared by all parties involved."
"We are proud of this important step, which is a great addition to the Hotel's ever-growing list of accomplishments and services," said Thomas. "We are committed to retaining the same high level of service that our customers and guests have become accustomed to."
In line with QAIA's current renovation and expansion program, several banks are operating branches at QAIA, including AJIB, the Arab Bank, Jordan Bank, the Housing Bank for Trade and Finance and, most recently, Societe Generale - Jordan.

yazm1991 February 10th, 2010, 02:22 AM AIG boasts achievements
The Airport International Group (AIG) announced Tuesday that Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) was able to weather the 2008 and 2009 challenging years for the aviation and tourism industries.
AIG Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Curtis Grad told reporters yesterday during a press tour, that the volume of passengers reached almost 4.5 million in 2008, up 16 per cent from the previous year.
“Traffic in 2009 was also strong as the number of passengers shot up more than 4.7 million, up by 6.5 per cent over 2008,” Grad said.
He attributed the growth in the traffic performance to the introduction of new routes and airlines operators as well as increased frequencies on existing routes.
Carriers contributing to the flight increases included Royal Jordanian, Austrian Airlines, Malev, Fly Dubai, Bahrain Air, Watanya and Emirates, according to a statement issued by the AIG which was established in 2007 following a government decision to expand and revolutionise the services offered at QAIA.
“Also, the airport's charter traffic contributed to 2009 growth with new seasonal services including Hamburg International, Livingston, Air Mediterranean, Blue Panorama and Neosair,” the statement said.
According to the CEO, the AIG consortium of international investors entrusted with the expansion, rehabilitation and operation of QAIA has spent JD200 million up to date.
The $750 million project is growing according to plan and will be ready for operation in spring 2012, Grad indicated, noting that after the completion of construction work in the new terminal the airport's capacity will jump to nine million passengers annually, from its current level of 3.5 million.
"AIG is committed to securing QAIA's position as the airport of choice in the region," Grad stressed.
By September, passengers will start to use part of the new terminals for departure and arrival, Grad said, describing the site as "state-of-the-art terminal building".
Noting that the consortium was awarded the project under a 25-year concession agreement following an extensive international competition, AIG COO Francois Beristo said 97 per cent of AIG employees are Jordanian, some of whom are in the senior positions now.
After the completion of the project, the Jordanian staff would takeover the operation completely, Grad said.

Its built 'on top' of the existing two terminals, so I think the new structure will replace them in stages i.e. the new main building in the middle will be connected to existing terminals first and then they will be demolished and replaced by new building.
yazm1991 February 11th, 2010, 04:25 AM Airport International Group presents infrastructure progress at Queen Alia International Airport
Airport International Group (AIG), the consortium of companies responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion of operation of Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), organized a comprehensive tour of the airport's facilities for the representatives of local media.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/93595-A.jpg
The tour showcased the latest infrastructure developments taking place at the airport, including the rehabilitation efforts of the QAIA existing terminals and the progress of the construction of the new terminal, which is slated for completion in spring 2012.
The visit began with AIG's Chief Executive Officer Curtis Grad delivering a brief presentation on the latest developments and future plans and answered the media's inquiries on the project. Followed by a tour in the existing terminals, where the participants were shown the recently-enhanced food and beverage area, in addition to the new newsstands and pharmacy. The tour then proceeded to the construction site of the new terminal, where engineers at the site briefed the participants on the different phases of the construction and the project's overall progress.
"We are continuing to experience strong traffic growth despite the dire global economic conditions of the past year. Passenger and aircraft traffic results of 2009 were impressive, with passengers exceeding 4.77 million passengers, a 6.5% year-over-year increase, driven by a 12.6% increase in aircraft movements,"
"We have initiated a series of interim improvements to the existing terminals to provide passengers with an enhanced travel experience, while we work feverishly on the new world-class QAIA terminal, which will open in two short years from now," he added.
The $750m rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are well underway, including the construction of a new state-of-the-art 100,000 square meter passenger terminal. AIG is a Jordanian company with private shareholding by Invest AD (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Noor Financial Investment Company (Kuwait), Edgo Group (Jordan), Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited (Cyprus), J&P-Avax (Greece) and Aéroports de Paris Management (France).

Its good to see that the expansion isn't a complete waste of money, and that the demand for gates at the airport is present. Great to see an increase in flights to Amman from so many destinations.
yazm1991 March 18th, 2010, 03:33 PM Eco-Friendly Airport
Foster + Partners have unveiled the expansion plans of the Queen Alia International Airport that will allow it to grow without disruption over the next 25 years. Slated to be complete by 2011, the airport should be able to handle around 9 million passengers each year, nearly three times as many as it does now.
The designs incorporate the existing runway while the scheme features the construction of a new terminal building that will bring a sense of clarity to the airport. These new courtyards will contain water pools that reflect natural light into the building to provide a comfortable climate.
The airport’s canopy roof has been inspired by the organic form of natural palm trees. The split beams at the column junctions allow natural light to penetrate through. The canopy also acts as a thermal store to heat and cool the building and collects rainwater as well. In addition to the energy saving techniques, the designers have also planned to include banks of photovoltaic panels to supplement the electricity supply.

yazm1991 May 1st, 2010, 12:17 PM Passenger traffic up by 20.9% in Q1
Passenger traffic and aircraft movement at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) increased by 20.9 per cent and 13.9 per cent respectively during the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period of 2009, according to the Airport International Group (AIG). Passenger traffic during the first three months reached 1,097,400 passengers with March recorded the highest traffic volumes with 392,400 passengers.
Aircraft movement at QAIA reached 13,989, said a statement issued by AIG on Tuesday. "QAIA is continuing its trend of impressive year-on-year growth and is steadily emerging as the airport of choice in the Levant region. Last year was challenging for the industry, but these results demonstrate the resilience of the Jordanian market," Curtis Grad, the chief executive officer of AIG, said. He noted that new routes and additional flights frequencies have recently been announced to-and-from QAIA, to effective this summer.

yazm1991 June 8th, 2010, 08:39 AM Queen Alia International Airport Announces Traffic Performance Results for the first quarter of 2010
AIG announced the airport’s passenger and aircraft movement traffic results for the first quarter of 2010, with the final tally showing a remarkable improvement in the airport’s overall performance over 2009.
Passenger traffic during the period reached 1,097,400 passengers, which translates to an impressive 20.9% increase over 2009. March recorded the highest traffic volumes with 392,400 passengers for the month. Aircraft movements for the quarter were strong; totaling 13,989 aircraft — a 13.9% increase over the previous year.
Commenting on these encouraging results, AIG’s Chief Executive Officer Curtis Grad said: “QAIA is continuing its trend of impressive year-on-year growth and is steadily emerging as the airport of choice in the Levant region. Last year was particularly challenging for the industry, but these results demonstrate the resilience of the Jordanian market and the effectiveness of the strategies implemented by AIG and its partners to create a robust and sustainable regional hub.”
Driven by Jordan’s commitment to “open skies” and market liberalization, QAIA’s route network has expanded dramatically over the past two years, offering travelers a greater variety of destinations and routing options, greater weekly frequencies and more competitive fares. Despite the global economic crisis, QAIA welcomed a host of new services and/or additional flight frequencies announcements over the past two years, from a broad range of air carriers including Royal Jordanian, Delta, Austrian, Malev, Fly Dubai, Wataniya, Air Arabia, Etihad, Turkish Airlines and Emirates; in addition to charter flights by Hamburg International, Air Mediterranee, Blue Panorama and Neosair.
A variety of new routes and additional flights frequencies have recently been announced to-and-from QAIA, effective this summer, including Iberia, airBaltic, Alitalia, Tarom Romanian and Vueling airlines, in addition to new charter flights from both MINT Airways and Adria Airways.
The rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are well underway with the new passenger terminal extending over 85,000 square meters. AIG, under the terms of a 25 year concession agreement with the Jordanian government, is responsible for the operation of the airport, the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the construction of the new terminal. AIG is a Jordanian company with private shareholding by Invest AD (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Noor Financial Investment Company (Kuwait), Edgo Group (Jordan), Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited (Cyprus), J&P-Avax (Greece) and Aéroports de Paris Management (France).

yazm1991 June 27th, 2010, 12:44 PM Queen Alia International Airport Records 13.4% Passenger Growth in May 2010
AIG, the Jordanian company responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of QAIA announced the traffic performance of the month of May. QAIA registered growth in May's traffic performance with 419,606 passengers, translating into a 13.4% year-over-year increase. Aircraft movement reported a 9% growth with 5,221 aircraft movements in May 2010 compared to 4,787 in May 2009.
The aviation industry continues to face variety of challenges, the most intense of which is the Icelandic volcanic ash. QAIA's traffic performance, however, continues to experience a steady increase, where Amman is steadily becoming a preferred regional hub for many airlines around the world. In the past couple of weeks, several airlines launched new flights to QAIA including airBaltic, Alitalia and Air Arabia - Egypt.
yazm1991 July 4th, 2010, 06:57 PM Was in QAIA 4 days ago and it is a pleasure to report that construction is going ahead on schedule.

yazm1991 July 29th, 2010, 12:35 PM can someone answer this question. to complete the new terminals are they tearing down the old ones?
If look at an overview of the plan: http://www.aig.aero/en/node/169
It appears that they will demolish the old terminals, but I assume this will only happen when the new arrivals/depatures hall is completed and some new gates are completed.
yazm1991 August 15th, 2010, 02:01 PM Recording-breaking Traffic Continues at Queen Alia International Airport
Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian company responsible for managing, operating and redeveloping Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), has dedicated its efforts and resources to elevating the level of services offered to its passengers and visitors while building, in very close proximity, a new state-of-the-art passenger terminal, with a capacity of 9 million passengers annually, set to finish in Spring 2012.
As the prime air transport gateway for Jordan, QAIA stands as one of the fastest growing hubs in the Middle East, with sustained increases in passenger traffic year-over-year, with volumes for the first half of this year reaching 2,445,500 passengers, which translates to an impressive 17% increase over 2009. Despite the limited design capacity of the existing terminals, estimated at 3.5 million passengers annually, and the fact that the airport catered to more than 4.77 million passengers last year, AIG has been working diligently to utilize the airport's maximum potential in meeting the growing traffic demand, which typically reaches its highest rate during the summer holiday season. Preliminary statistics show that during the month of July, passengers travelling through QAIA reached nearly 600,000 passengers, shattering the previous one-month record of 533,000 passengers set in August 2009. Roughly 236,600 passengers travelled in the first 10 days of August.
Since AIG assumed management and operation of QAIA in November 2007, a multitude of new airlines and additional frequencies have been added to the QAIA flight schedule, rising from 28 airlines flying to 56 destinations in 2007, with 401 flights a week, to 42 airlines flying to 66 destinations in 2010, with 590 flights a week. The expanded frequencies have come from a broad spectrum of air carriers currently operating at QAIA, including Royal Jordanian, Emirates, Etihad, Delta, Austrian, Turkish and Air Arabia, as well as new flights by Alitalia, Vueling, airBaltic, Air Arabia- Egypt and Iberia,
In terms of enhancing the existing terminal capacity, AIG has been working closely with third-party partners including airlines, ground-handlers and government service agencies to add new and improved services, equipment and highly-trained staff to make the passenger experience, amidst limited available resources and construction works, as pleasant, efficient and comfortable as possible.
AIG will spare no effort in addressing the challenges faced in the existing airport terminals. The company and its 300+ employees, 97% of which are Jordanian, reaffirm the commitment to further enhancing and developing the Jordanian aviation sector, as mandated by His Majesty King Abdullah II. It is the prime objective of AIG, to develop QAIA as a healthy and self-sufficient service-focused enterprise – one that serves as a source of pride and prosperity for all Jordanians.

khalood September 16th, 2010, 04:52 AM Lol! This project is going on time probably because its part of the PPP (Public Private Partnership Program) I forget the Con. Frim's name but the airport will be managed by a private French firm i beleive for the next 25 years, during which the firm will pay the country some sort of royalty or somthing. Then it will hand over full control back to the Gov. This is a way to get investments from outside the country or even within the country. When the gov. doesnt have the means to impliment much needed building or service updates, private firms step in, invest cash, and get to manage for a while and make profit. It seems to be working well in Jordan, Orange is another example of PPP.

But the main concern for PPP is Funding. There was a plan on making light railway between Amman and Zarqa and they award the winner consortium but eventually it was a totally failure because they have no fund. Right now I dont know whats news about the light railway and I hope Other important project in Jordan will not experience the same faith.

yazm1991 September 25th, 2010, 03:52 AM Queen Alia International Airport Records More than half-million Passengers during August
AIG announced the traffic performance for the month of August. QAIA registered 521,094 passengers compared to 533,111 passengers during the same period last year, due to the timing of the Holy Month of Ramadan – although a decline of 2.25%, it is only the fourth time in QAIA’s history that passenger traffic exceeded a half million in a single month (previous occurrences, Jul-09, Aug-09 & Jul-10). On the other hand, Aircraft movements had witnessed a growth of 1.5%, with 5,795 aircraft this year compared to 5,712 in August 2009.
Furthermore, cargo movements had also registered a significant increase by 9.7%, where cargo traffic recorded 8,513 tons, compared to 7,759 tons in August 2009.
yazm1991 October 24th, 2010, 02:44 AM Queen Alia International Airport reports unprecedented growth
Over 1.6 million passengers travelled through Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) during the third quarter of this year, an increase of 14.8 per cent over the same period of 2009, according to Airport International Group (AIG).
In a statement issued Saturday by AIG, the Jordanian company responsible for the expansion, redeveloping and operating QAIA, the figures showed a continued trend of growth in passengers, aircraft and cargo traffic.
September recorded more than 512,000 passengers compared to 405,000 during the same month of last year, a 26.6 per cent increase, according to the statement. It also noted that it is the first time in QAIA history that the number of passengers exceeded half a million in the month of September.
The highest traffic volumes in the third quarter were recorded in July, with around 600,000 passengers, while in August over 521,000 passengers travelled through QAIA, said the statement.
The airport also witnessed its highest level of aircraft movement so far during the months of July and August with 6,134 and 5,795 respectively, while in September, aircraft movements were recorded at 5,501 aircraft, which is a 9.7 per cent increase over the same period of last year. As for cargo, September registered 7,065 tonnes with a 16.3 per cent increase over the same month of last year, while August registered the highest in the third quarter with 8,513 tonnes.
“The numbers tell the storyة Amman is continuing to show strong growth in capacity, matched by demand, which has now positioned us as one of the fastest growing airports in the region,” Curtis Grad, chief executive officer of AIG, said.
The $750 million rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA are still underway, including the construction of a new 100,000-square-metre passenger terminal, according to AIG statement.

QAIA terminal opening date to be delayed
Jordan's transport ministry and the Airport International Group (AIG) have agreed to delay the opening date of the new passenger terminal at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) to June 2012 from February, Jordan Times has reported. The ministry cited delays in implementing the terminal's architectural designs. The terminal building is set to cater for more than nine million passengers, annually.
_______
That means we'll have to wait exactly a year and a half for this terminal to open! It seems like a long time considering how much they progressed.

lady gaga November 15th, 2012, 09:36 AM World Duty Free Group pledges high class offer at new Amman terminal
Published: 06/11/12
Passengers will encounter the 2,600sq m store as they come through security
JORDAN. World Duty Free Group (WDFG) has pledged to deliver a high-class retail offer at one of its largest walk-through stores worldwide, when the new terminal at Amman Queen Alia International Airport opens in early 2013.
WDFG International Operations Director Pedro Castro told The Moodie Report: “We will open a walk-through store in 2,600sq m of space and it will be a huge transformation from what has gone before. It’s an amazing store in a beautiful building [designed by Sir Norman Foster -Ed].”
The retailer’s main store comes directly after the security point, with beauty and tobacco the anchor categories as passengers enter. “The key in a walk-through is to engage and stop the passenger,” said Castro, “so we carry the major categories here. P&C is our biggest category now in Amman and it will have a lot of personalisation and branded furniture, as well as a greater range. We will also emphasise local products in good space, with food well represented, plus we’ll have a strong luxury goods zone.”
How travellers will view the entrance to the store as they approach
Fragrances & cosmetics will be a central attraction
The terminal will also feature two piers, each with a 300sq m store, plus an Arrivals shop – an important channel in Jordan.
Airport operator AIG has said that the facility “will be a national landmark and a source of pride for all Jordanians”. Commercial space will be +25% greater than in the current terminal (at around 6,000sq m), with WDFG the key concessionaire.
The new terminal will significantly increase the airport's capacity to 9 million passengers annually, nearly three times the current airport capacity of 3.5 million passengers. Future expansion will further increase the airport capacity to 12 million passengers a year.

First impressions matter. That’s why so much hope is pinned on the success of Queen Alia International Airport’s new terminal.
Racing against nimbler and wealthier rivals, Jordan has been striving to achieve its status as a tourism and investment destination. Yet, with an airport that reflects nothing of the country’s rich heritage or economic potential, reaching this goal might seem just that much more difficult to achieve. Hence, the government’s decision to enter into a public-private partnership to finance Queen Alia International Airport’s new terminal, which will be unveiled in March 2013.
“Given the geography of the country, aviation has become an integral part of the country’s infrastructure, so I think in light of that it was a very wise decision by the government to enter into this partnership,” Kjeld Binger, CEO of Airport International Group (AIG), told Venture. AIG is the consortium responsible for the rehabilitation and expansion of QAIA. “I think [this partnerships] is key for the development of the country.”
In a stark contrast to the current terminal, the new one is much bigger—designed to let in more sunlight—and promises a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience. And although the operator of the new airport hotel has not been identified yet, Crown Class passengers can still enjoy a massive business class lounge.
Binger believes that traffic development will grow by around 4–5 percent on average throughout the next 20 years. He predicted that by 2020, passenger numbers will reach 10–12 million annually, compared to a bit over 6 million today.
“Jordan has the Marka airport and an airport in Aqaba, but when you look at the operations there, they are very minimal. There is no doubt that QAIA is the main gateway to Jordan and will remain as such for many years to come,” Binger noted.
Kjeld Binger, CEO of Airport International Group (AIG)
Let’s begin with the question that everybody is asking: when will you open the new terminal?
The basic infrastructure of the new terminal will be ready on February 28, 2013. The opening date has not been set yet, but we expect it will take place on one of the first days in March. The transfer from the old terminal to the new one is a very complex affair that needs to happen overnight. We will create a window from around 10 p.m., when we will stop operations in the old terminal then begin operations in the new one sometime in the early morning the day after. You can imagine how complicated that process is, and we don’t want to have thousands of people watching, so we will keep the exact date low profile. The work has to be carried out in one shot because there’s no going back.
There have been quite a few delays; we were expecting the new airport to open its doors at least by this New Year. What happened?
I think it’s fair to say that the way the terminal was planned from the very beginning did not take into account the very strong traffic growth from 2007 onwards. When we look at the figures from 2007 through 2012, the compounded growth was around 10 percent. The growth was much lower in 2007, so the idea was that the old terminal could cope with the growth throughout the course of the new terminal construction. But then growth became overwhelming and the process had to be divided into two phases. When the tender was launched, the footprint of the new terminal was much smaller, only 80,000 square meters; we had to extend the area by almost 25,000 square meters.
Finally, it is publicly known that there was a structural issue with the roof domes: there was pressure on the columns underneath and there were doubts as to whether the connection to the columns could take the pressure. It’s fixed now.
How much did the delay cause in losses?
AIG has spent more than $50 million on additional works, including design works, over the original planned amount, which was supposed to be $850 million all-inclusive.
What stage are we at today?
All the basic infrastructure of the airport is there. It actually looks like an airport today; we are now in the process of installing and testing all the IT systems. An airport is a very complicated machine with a very high degree of information systems. If you arrive to Amman and you don’t have your bag with you, you go to the information center and they will know exactly where your bag is in the system, which tells you how integrated and global these systems are.
The other issue is that we have a bunch of concessioners—food and beverage and duty free operators, in addition to others—and all of these investors are now in the process of doing their fitting out within the terminal. We have 22,000 square meters of shops and offices that are now in the process of being finalized. We have to train around 3,000 people on how to use the terminal, where to go, how to find their counters, the offices, and so on. It’s a huge logistical process.
Do you think the first period will be chaotic?
Hopefully not: that’s what we are trying to avoid by being on time and training hundreds of people in the terminal every day. It’s not only where to go, how to act, where to dispose of the garbage – there are many activities that are very simple when you are used to them, but when it’s all new, they become absolutely complicated.
Do you think red tape and bureaucracy will be an issue in the new airport?
We have managed to deal with the authorities, and it’s a pleasure for me to announce that the several hurdles we have had in the old terminal are disappearing, such as the fact that today you have to screen luggage before you even go to check-in. We have managed to get rid of that and this is a huge improvement. The second thing that we have managed to do is to negotiate with government agencies for smoother visa and immigration procedures, which will benefit tourism and visitors to the country. The third thing is that we have negotiated with customs on a leaner customs operation upon arrival. So, in terms of passenger flow, there are very strong improvements promising smoother operations. And I think it’s fair to say that all authorities have shown flexibility and willingness to find solutions to benefit our passengers.
How do you interpret the growth in passenger numbers?
First of all, the main driver for passenger growth is not the airport itself, but the demand for the destination. I think what good infrastructure can do is stimulate that demand – it is easier to make the decision to go somewhere if it’s a nice place and if you have a nice experience going there, and if you have the right carriers that fly to that destination. But on the other hand, just because you built a new airport doesn’t mean people will start flying to that destination. So it’s the airport itself, the policies of the country, and the development of other infrastructure, like hotels, that all have to go hand-in-hand to create a positive experience.
Did the Arab Spring have anything to do with the growth?
Actually the growth is heavily concentrated regionally. Traffic from Europe and the U.S. is relatively weak, whereas traffic to and from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, and the entire MENA region is growing dramatically. One of the reasons for this is that the general situation in the region stimulates regional tourism. The entire political situation has dictated Amman to become an important transit hub for the region, which has stimulated our growth enormously.
How will the new terminal affect the capacity of the airport?
There has been some misunderstanding in the market as to the airport’s capacity; the old terminal is designed for 3.5 million passengers in the departure area, check-in, the arrival area, and all the public areas within the terminal. But today it is operating 13 gates with a capacity of at least 7 million passengers, which is almost a million more than what they operate today. So gate capacity is not a problem: it’s the capacity inside the terminal. When we open the new terminal, all of these issues will be solved because it has capacity for 9 million passengers without extending the baggage system which, if extended, will have a capacity of 12 million.
How do you feel about Jordan’s refusal to continue with its Open Skies agreement? Will this affect the airport or discourage other airlines from flying to Jordan?
As per definition, I’m in favor of Open Skies. I do appreciate, however, that Open Skies negotiations are something that we need to be careful about because, on one hand, we have a national carrier (RJ) that represents around 55 percent of traffic, and it will take time for RJ to get used to a complete Open Skies regime, which we need to respect. It is a development that needs to be looked into very carefully so as not to create too much turmoil or disturbance in the market. But, generally speaking, I’m absolutely in favor of Open Skies; all experiences show that airports and countries operating in an Open Skies environment are the winners in the long run.
There are airlines that at this point in time cannot fly into Amman because of the lack of agreements. However, I think it’s also a matter of maturity, and we will get there and everybody will be happy because in the long run it will also support RJ’s position as a national carrier.
Qatar is also building a huge new airport: can we compete with that?
We need to define and understand our role in the market: we are not here to compete with Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Doha, because those airports have national carriers that are very strong – we all know how strong Emirates is and what it means for the airport in Dubai. The Qataris are investing huge amounts on the airline, the airport, the infrastructure – it’s a different ballgame. Our position is much more to be a regional niche operation, which benefits from very short connection times, and to adapt a business model that really makes us create our own market environment. Today, more than 20 percent of our traffic is transfer traffic, and it’s growing. As long as we can support RJ in its efforts to expand its network, we can grow as a niche hub.
Do you think RJ’s business might pick up over the coming period, and how do you see its performance?
I think RJ is in a transition and I do believe that it will come out of this transition stronger than ever. Royal Jordanian can compete with other airlines in the region in the sense that it picks up routes and networking opportunities that don’t fit the other airlines. I think it’s important to look at the fleets they are operating: the three major Gulf carriers are using very big planes, while RJ takes a slightly different approach, which means that it can target thinner markets, and that’s the niche that RJ has and where it can compete. I think there’s room for everyone.
When will you start with the second phase of the airport rehabilitation?
Once we have moved to the new terminal, we will start demolishing the old one and continue with the next phase of adding more gates. When we finalize this phase we will have 14 gates, which we should complete by the end of 2014.
We know that the airport runways went through rehabilitation as well; what is their status now?
We have two runways, but only one is operational. In 2007, it was agreed that the north runway would be renovated by the Ministry of Public Works, but the runway was never certified, so we have been stuck with only one runway. We are currently pushing to fix this issue. It’s because we don’t have the instrument landing system in the other direction.

yazm1991 January 28th, 2013, 09:02 AM Passenger traffic at Queen Alia Int’l Airport sets record high
AMMAN — Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian consortium responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the airport, announced on Sunday in a press release that the annual traffic of passengers travelling through Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) exceeded six million passengers for the first time in the airport’s history.
Noting that the last month of the year registered 441,288 passengers travelling through QAIA, a 2.4 per cent increase compared with same month in 2011. The company indicated in the press statement that the total number of passengers for 2012 was 6,250,048 passengers.
“Not only setting a record high and surpassing a significant milestone, the figure exceeded the annual total of the previous year by a noteworthy 14.3 per cent, or more than half a million passengers,” the press release said.
While passenger traffic has well exceeded the airport’s current capacity of 3.5 million annual passengers for the last four years, the rapidly approaching launch of the new terminal will immediately eliminate QAIA’s current capacity constrictions, catapulting the airport capacity to 9 million annual passengers.
Aircraft movement (ACM) figures for 2012 also hit record numbers, with December’s total of 5,165 ACMs, a 1.4 per cent increase compared to December 2011, bringing the annual total of aircraft movements at QAIA to 67,190 ACMs, a 5.9 per cent increase over 2011, which registered 63,426 ACMs.
AIG Chief Executive Officer Kjeld Binger said: “Reaching these new milestones for traffic at QAIA is a great achievement in itself, made even more noteworthy by the fact that they have been reached just ahead of the biggest and most important milestone in the development of QAIA; the upcoming launch of the new terminal.”
“This new national landmark represents the realisation of His Majesty’s vision for the airport, and the promising figures recorded in 2012 provide further optimism in the future of QAIA, as well as that of the entire Kingdom,” he added in the press statement.
The state-of-the-art new terminal boasts vastly improved infrastructure, with a larger check-in area, clearly marked signage and flight information monitors, comfortable seating, a larger duty-free area, and a wider variety of food and beverage outlets, among many other greatly enhanced features. The opening of the terminal, slated to happen in the coming months, will take place following a one-time, overnight operational transfer from the old facilities.
AIG is investing an estimated $750 million in the construction of a landmark new terminal — now almost 92 per cent complete. Future expansions will further increase the airport capacity to 12 million passengers a year.
AIG has also spent an additional $100 million on rehabilitating and improving the existing terminals to enable the airport to handle the continuous growth in passenger traffic.

nice terminal:banana::nocrook:
Halawala March 2nd, 2013, 11:37 AM Are the new terminals connected to the present one? I think it would make sense to connect them somehow and increase the capacity.
EK413 March 2nd, 2013, 12:03 PM I love the NEW terminal however I must ask how do they plan to incorporate the NEW terminal with the old...? Any plans to demolish the old terminal & build a NEW terminal...?
Halawala March 2nd, 2013, 12:41 PM I love the NEW terminal however I must ask how do they plan to incorporate the NEW terminal with the old...? Any plans to demolish the old terminal & build a NEW terminal...?
I have a plan. Why not take the parking space of the OLD terminal, cover it up, and let it be part of the new terminal--thus making it ONE huge terminal.

yazm1991 March 3rd, 2013, 11:37 AM First Flights Depart from the New QAIA
Airport International Group (AIG) - the Jordanian consortium responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) - has announced kick off of its operations with three Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) flights schedule to take off from the new terminal starting Sunday 3rd March, 2013.
AIG clarified that RJ's Athens, Doha and Sharm El Sheikh-bound flights are merely the first three that will be departing from the new QAIA terminal beginning on Sunday 3rd March and up until the full transfer of all RJ and other airlines' flights to the new building on 21st March, 2013.
Accordingly, RJ has asked those of its passengers departing to Athens, Doha and Sharm El Sheikh to go directly to the new terminal and follow the signs that have been set up in the building's lounges to complete the usual travel procedures.
"By starting with three initial departure flights, RJ and AIG are in the process of preparing for the full transfer of all operations to the new terminal. This operation represents an exciting phase for us at QAIA as we are introducing a new traveler experience by leveraging modern facilities, advanced work mechanisms and cutting-edge passenger handling systems," said AIG CEO Kjeld Binger. "We at AIG value our strategic partnership with RJ, Jordan's official carrier, and we are confident that, together, we will be able to achieve our vision of positioning QAIA as a niche transit hub in the region."
Great news, so happy to see the project reaching completion!
yazm1991 March 5th, 2013, 01:55 AM New terminal at Jordan’s Queen Alia airport to open March 21
Jordan’s Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) will open its new terminal on March 21, a move that is expected to almost triple the airport’s capacity.
The Foster and Partners designed terminal is 103,000 sqm and has cost an estimated US$750 million, and should increase capacity to nearly nine million passengers per year.
Queen Alia is located 20 miles south of the capital Amman and is Jordan’s largest airport. There are currently 44 airlines flying from QAIA with 1,220 flights per week, including a three times-weekly Easyjet service from London Gatwick, and daily Heathrow services from fellow Oneworld members British Airways and Royal Jordanian.
Construction started in 2008 and the striking Bedouin tent inspired design concept is outlined on the Foster and Partners website: “The tessellated roof canopy comprises a series of shallow concrete domes, which extend to shade the facades. To enable seamless future expansion, each dome is a modular unit. The domes branch out from the supporting columns like the leaves of a desert palm and daylight floods the concourse through split beams at the column junctions.”
The Airport International Group, which financed and manages the new terminal, has invested an additional US$100 million on upgrading the existing terminals, including increasing the size of check-in areas and refurbishing the retail and dining outlets. Upgrades to the baggage handling system and security areas will also be made in the near future.

yazm1991 March 15th, 2013, 01:33 AM King Abdullah opens new Queen Alia airport terminal
AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday opened the Queen Alia International Airport’s (QAIA) new passenger terminal.
His Majesty inaugurated the terminal during a ceremony at the airport in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Rania, senior officials and diplomats.
Also Thursday, the King met with Jin-Yong Cai, chief executive and executive vice president of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and commended the corporation's partnership with several Jordanian companies to help the country implement its development goals.
King Abdullah also lauded the IFC's contribution in financing the QAIA expansion project, a Royal Court statement said.
The IFC is the investment arm of the World Bank. So far, it has contributed around $1 billion to projects implemented in the Kingdom.
Planning Minister Jafar Hassan also met with the IFC official and reviewed plans to increase IFC investments in the Kingdom.
During the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, Transport Minister Alaa Batayneh said the new terminal was poised to become the new gateway to Jordan, highlighting its role in boosting the country's economy and strengthening commercial exchange.
“The old terminal is no longer capable of meeting the rising demand and turnout by passengers… opening the new terminal is a milestone for Jordan and will help meet passengers' requirements,” said the minister.
The new 103,000-square-metre terminal can handle 12 million passengers annually, compared with the old terminal's 3.5-million-passenger capacity, according to the Airport International Group (AIG).
The number of gates will be developed gradually to meet demand towards the 12-million-passenger target.
In the terminal's first phase, seven new contact stands and one temporary remote boarding lounge, will come into operation, serving seven million passengers.
"Additionally, demolishing the airport’s [old] terminal will trigger another phase of the expansion plan, catapulting the total capacity to nine million passengers per year," according to AIG, which is the consortium responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of the airport.
Batayneh noted that the daily flight capacity at the airport will increase from 110 in 2006 to a projected 180 in 2018, while the number of destinations from and to the airport rose from 40 in 2006 to 61 in 2012.
He said AIG has so far invested JD500 million in developing the airport, adding that the total cost of investment in the project will reach JD700 million once the development has been finalised and the capacity of the terminal has been increased.
AIG Chairman Nazim Al Qudsi said the group will launch a fund to implement a series of initiatives to benefit the local community.
He added that AIG will send 100 beneficiaries of Al Aman Fund for the Future of the Orphans to umra (the lesser Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca) next week.
The terminal was designed by renowned British architect Norman Foster, who designed the new Wembley Stadium in London, among other international landmarks.
The new terminal's roof design is inspired by bedouin tents and is composed of 127 concrete domes.
There are 64 check-in counters at the new building and six conveyor belts in the baggage claim area.
Under a build, operate and transfer deal signed with AIG in 2007, the government will gain ownership of the airport after 25 years, and will receive 54.4 per cent of revenues for the first six years and 54.6 per cent of gross revenues for the remainder of the term.

Are you sure it will remain operational for a few months? From what I understood yesterday (March 21st) was the last day the old terminals were operational. They will be demolished in order to extend the boarding gates to accommodate more contact dates.
