View Full Version : 210 Freeway in Pasadena
phattonez October 16th, 2006, 03:09 AM As you head east past the gold line, the median has nothing in it until you reach a paved road. There doesn't seem to be any construction, it's just sitting there not being used. What was it for and has the project been cancelled?
Fern~Fern* October 16th, 2006, 03:12 AM The Gold Line will be extended along the 210 in a near future.
phattonez October 16th, 2006, 03:13 AM I know about that, but there is a paved road just sitting there.
Fern~Fern* October 16th, 2006, 03:17 AM That's been there for many years already. I never really knew what was the purpose of it. Until now when it's completely wiped out to make way for GL ext.
godblessbotox October 16th, 2006, 06:26 AM were the east west lanes of the 21o ever touching befor they decided to put a train down the middle? because i would assume its just left over lanes from when they split them apart
phattonez October 16th, 2006, 06:51 AM No, these are lanes that they added in once the train stopped. I remember when they were doing construction on it, but I just assumed that the project was sued and died.

Actually, clearly, the roads in the middle of the 210 predate the freeway's entire history. They look like they were last paved in the 1940s.
The gold line was built on top of old railroads within the existing interior stretch of the 210. No widening or repavement was needed.
godblessbotox October 19th, 2006, 09:39 PM mystery roads indeed.
speaking of the 21o. any news on the 21o-71o tunnel/paveover?
phattonez October 20th, 2006, 12:26 AM I remember when these roads were being made, they don't look at all like they were paved in the 1940's. Maybe we're not thinking of the same area.

I always thought that they were supposed to be an entrance or exit to the 210 freeway. That for some reason were cancelled due to lack of funds. So why not to do the next best thing for Angelinos. They should add a lane each direction and make it a double lane carpool going both directions on the 210. Since that freeway is always jammed packed, what do you fellows think?
edkao October 20th, 2006, 07:20 AM That patch of pavement between the lanes was constructed a few years back (8 years?).
There used to be a railroad bridge from the center of the freeway, over the eastbound 210 lanes, thru the Arcadia service yard, then to eastbound through the cities of Monrovia, Duarte... etc.
You can see the remain of the bridge head on the south side of 210 before the Santa Anita offramp (going eastbound).
The railroad bridge was a huge concrete structure, for the demolition they needed to closed that section of 210 for an entire weekend. And the debris would close the eastbound 210 freeway. So the road between the freeway was built as substitute east bound lanes, so they could haul away the pieces of the bridge without interfering with traffic.

Elsongs October 20th, 2006, 11:41 AM The median up until Santa Anita Park was used by the Santa Fe Railway and Amtrak used to use the line too; the LACTC (now MTA) purchased that line to build what is now the Gold Line. The "paved road" is an access road for maintenance vehicles for the railroad (for crews to check switches, signals, etc)

All carpool lanes should have a minimum requirement of 3 people like on the 10. If that fails, then I agree, put another lane.
godblessbotox October 20th, 2006, 07:46 PM why? two people works well enough. if anything they should start to enforce the 2 people minimum. i always see loners hopping the median jetting around in the hov lane untill they feel they have pased enough cars. then scooting on back in cauzing the 1o cars behind them to slam on the brakes.

The 10 has a lot less congestion and it handles a higher volume. It seems to me that the reason for this is the bus/HOV lane.
godblessbotox October 21st, 2006, 02:30 AM yah i know that [i use it everyday]... so why would you want to make it harder for people to use?
Fern~Fern* October 21st, 2006, 04:07 AM Buses should not be allowed to use the carpool lane on the 10. They just make more traffic while cruising @ 70 MPH. There should be a law where there to remain on the truck lane while on the FWY. So the rest of us who have a companion can zoom by everyone else driving solo......

That's why they call them *HOV* lanes now :)

^^ I understand that, HOV lanes can do without slow ass busses!

In reality though, that lane is a bus lane, carpools are just sharing it. And I really hate when I get stuck behind a bus there. I went to a Dodger game one Sunday and got caught behind a bus in El Monte. I basically had to follow it all the way to the 101.
So anyway, the HOV lanes on most freeways aren't really doing anything nor are they compelling people to carpool. I believe that if you raise the minimum to 3, more people would actually carpool.
godblessbotox October 21st, 2006, 06:51 PM honeestly ferney i have to disagree with you. if anything the busses are the best at maintaining a high speed. more often then not it is a slow cuv, or other veichle that slow things down for me.
phat. i think that would make the numbers of peolpe car pooling even less.

Look at what happened on the 10 when the minimum was lowered to 2 people for all day. It was changed back for a reason.
Fern~Fern* October 21st, 2006, 11:07 PM ^^ I don't know why it was changed back to two per vehicle. Anyhow, maybe if they remove the train tracks from Cal State LA to El Monte they should be able to add another important carpool lane. Also the 10 has potential to be expanded 1 or 2 more lanes on each direction. The side street next to the FWY should be removed to make way for the 10 expansion.....
godblessbotox October 22nd, 2006, 01:37 AM you know that wont happen for a long long time
