Asian Heritage Row (AHR) runs along the quaint Jalan Doraisamy, which is situated just off Jalan Sultan Ismail, next to the Sheraton Imperial Hotel. It is strategically located in the heart of the city and is growing in popularity as a preferred destination for the young and trendy. It encompasses a row of elegant and charming restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs and even has a foot reflexology salon. These 80-year old prewar houses, that were once abandoned and ignored, have now been given new life with F&B outlets of international standards.

Thank youl, SoHO, that's quite a show! :okay:

I'm glad to hear that some old, long forgotten buildings got a new lease on life!

I have no idea what these buildings looked like before they got their fancy facelift. Were they totally nondescript or were they architectural charmers?

I feel the redesign here has gone a bit far. Apart from the lush outdoor vegetation and the occasional mask or bust, nothing here says "Asia" to me, and I find that a bit disappointing.

SEAfan the original buildings were handsome 2 storey linked town houses. You can see abit of the original design and brickwork in the Kristao & Senja restaurant pics http://www.asianheritagerow.com/images/realgallery/asianheritagerowtoday/4.jpg
and http://www.asianheritagerow.com/images/realgallery/asianheritagerowtoday/3.jpg

the ?original interior stairway to the upper floor is seen here http://www.asianheritagerow.com/images/realgallery/kristao/4.jpg

similar linked town houses in this area that have not yet been 'renovated' is seen here in the background http://www.asianheritagerow.com/images/realgallery/theloft/7.jpg

many of these townhouses have been demolished and the remaining ones are bought by developers that only think of converting them into F & B outlets/offices. Unfortunately i dont know of any that have sold or lease restored townhouses as city homes, mayb hopefully in the future when KLites appreciate these heritage sites and r willing to pay to own these houses :okay:

O thank you so much, Travellator! :)

So things are exactly as I suspected: handsome old local architecture altered beyond recognition. :bash:

And it would indeed be wonderful if people were to recognize these old treasures and restore them properly! Of course it's an enormous investment, but it should be well worth it, both for the individual owner as well as the city as a whole, if that were to happen.

I mean, you can look at the Clarke Quay are, with the pastel paint and the giant blue spaceship, and wonder what these people were smoking:dj:

The shophouse areas near Chinatown and Little India show a nice balance between restoring history and modern uses...

As for Malaysia I would look in Penang, Jalan Mesjid Kepitan Keling would probably be the best example...while Jonker St. and Heeren St. in Melaka are still steeped in history.

Cheers, m

Actually the row of row houses that houses these restaurants and bars are different from those opposite as shown in picture ( http://www.asianheritagerow.com/images/realgallery/theloft/7.jpg ) Those that are in the picture are under renovation now and from the looks of it, the frontage are gonna be preserved. I really hope so. We had a lot of screwed-up preservation efforts lately. :ohno:

Travellator > My dream home to restore a shophouse to be my home. Yea.....it hasn't really caught up with Malaysians yet as of to live in these houses but I guess people here have different expectation. Unfortunately many dislike old buildings for residence and of course none are being used as residential :(
