The west and east stands will be rebuilt, but the north and south stands will be retained. After the Euro 2016, the north and south stands should be demolished and new stands will be constructed to match with the east/west stands.

Maybe you're right. It's almost matter of debate wether a club could fill in a bigger stadium, and I still can't find a satisfying answer to the question "is it better to have a 80 000 stadium for having a more impressive atmosphere for the big games (the ones that matter!) or having a 60 000, but always full.
I used to think the 80 000 option was the best, but I start changing my mind slowly...
And I totally agree with you. Italy deserves a WC or a Euro tournament to finally upgrade its stadium and make some of the nice projects that we keep to see appearing come true!! (and get rid of those bloody athletics tracks everywhere!!!) :)

It is getting sooo frustrating :bash::bash::bash:

^^ that is not going to happen :)

I said after the Euro 2016 tournament. It should happen. It's a build-out. New roof can't support any new goal stands, then it's a disappointment. Why should the existing goal stands be kept?

IronMan89
May 14th, 2011, 12:18 AM
The Roof will embrace the curves of each stands... So if there is any refirbushment of north and south stand, it cannot be higher than it's actually is.

The luxury boxes are going to be in the east/west stands, but not in the north/south stands.

The luxury boxes are going to be in the east/west stands, but not in the north/south stands.

Don't you like the Estadio do Dragao in Porto ?? :|

Oh and BTW, as far as we know, only the "west" stand of the Vélodorme (aka the main stand) will have suites...Yes, as a matter of fact, they're only going to add a second tier on the current "east" stand, but no suites apparently.
(indeed, some videos are wrong on that matter)

porto dragao design is much better than marseille one! because unified.

the stands for marseille are a total disaster and only the roof shape rescue the overall.

There's a mistake on this video...
In the nighttime "packed" stadium both main stands are the same whereas it will not be the case... We can see that this one of the stands is different a few seconds before in the daytime packed stadium view.. Ganay stand which will be the first to be worked on this summer will see a new tier (second) to be added over it with apparentil no vip or luxury suites... Then the other stands Jean Bouin will be completely demolished and reconstructed.

May 21st, 2011, 03:49 PM
^^ Yep, it's exactly what I wrote in post #510. :)

Imo the Ganay/East stand will look like that (they'll only add a small second tier; Pics I extracted last year from this video):

I think the reason I love this stadium's plans so much is because of the way it embraces the originality of the stands. It isn't a destroy and re build project, rather, an upgrade of the highest class.

Another reason I like it is because the current stadium is so dull and lifeless.

I sneaked through the gates of the Velodrome in work and walked the final steps of the tribune Depe which has not yet been demolished. Unfortunately, I got spotted by a security guard and I could not go further than the "north turn" ... Note that all screens were removed and the seats begin to be withdrawn in Ganay tribune.

Maybe, but even though I was only young in 93, knowing my team may have been denied their only chance of a European Cup final in my lifetime by underhand means will always sting! Hope Tapie rots in hell!

But back on topic, although the Velodrome as it is currently isn't especially old, i've always thought it was a cracking football ground, would loved to have visited it. Not entirely sure if I like the plans for the remodelled stadium, but i'll certainly follow it with interest as it progresses!

Some people raised concerns whether the roof would provide proper ventilation and lighting for the turf to grow, anyone know if this has been addressed by SCAU?

As for a personal opinion - I think the new roof and stands will be absolutely unique. One may not like it, but this will allow the stadium to keep what is characteristic about it, while giving something great in return - if the roof thruss will look half as good in real life, it might be the most impressive roof construction from a viewer's perspective. Or am I exagerrating?

The roof is translucent but is it enough for the pitch ? I dont know

I totally agree with you, its unique and we have to remember the name of this stadium "Velodrome". I think that the roof with these "waves" totally respect the name and the current configuration of the stadium

But since its unique and unconventionnal some people may find that disconcerting

There will be more pictures on 9th June for the official works start with mayor, politicians

If the aim was to stick to the tradition, it's good they chose a less adventurous design. There are examples of very bad old-new mixing, with Odessa first in line. I think Marseille doesn't have the context Wolverhampton has so it was a lot easier for the French to do stuff like this in their city.
And just for the record, I'm not trying to be an ass, really.

Based on proposals, it just looks completely the same stadium with a roof on. It was better to completely build a new stadium.

Entrance and outside look is nice but inside could have been a bit better (closer and steeper to the pitch).

Closer ?? Don't forget in France all big stadiums are built with international rugby field dimensions in mind ! ;)

Anyway, in Marseille the stands are not far at all from the pitch IMO.

As far as I remember it was 400 million Francs (€60 million + €25 million for the surrounding area: esplanade etc). Anyway, it was really cheap indeed.

The cost of the current refurbishment is about €275 million.

Je vois qu'il y a beaucoup de travaux pour une simple extension de 6000 places !!!

funny as UEFA has no 5 stars ranking any more so why would anyone pursue that standard? And if we talk about the equivalent of '5 stars', than Velodrome will be too small, cause you need to have a net capacity of 70k for that.

Are you sure?
surfing the internet I find that the minimum capacity for a 5 point star is 50000!

I'm sure. The star ranking has been dropped sometime around 2006 I think. Since then there is no 4 or 5 stars rank any more. So 50 000 was but is not any more a requirement for that. And for Champions League it's 70k officially. Though of course Allianz Arena was short of that number and still did host the final - UEFA seems to be soft on that. So maybe it's 70k officially, but unofficially 60k?

No, it's the other way round !

Extracted from the "UEFA Stadium Infrastructure Regulations":

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/9324/capturedcran20110505173.jpg

In addition of that and several other criteria, a stadium must have at least 50K (net cap.) for the Europa League final, and for the Champions League final a stadium must have 60K (net cap.) minimum officially since 2006, but preferably 70K minimum as asked by Platini since 2007.
(see this thread : UEFA Final Stadiums (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=772616)).

---------

Anyway, about the new Vélodrome, nothing to do with the capacity criteria for the CL final.
The refurbishment is simply focused on the UEFA Elite ranking (30K minimum) since all the Euro 2016 stadiums must meet this criteria, not to mention the new UEFA requirements for the Euro 2016 which are much more strict than for any tournament before (including the CL & EL finals), in terms of stadium capacity and net capacity, number of suites, number of VIP/business seats, size of the VIP/corporate and Press areas inside the stadium etc etc etc, and especially in terms of seat width (50cm minimum for the regular seats and 60cm minimum for the Business seats and suites) and also in terms of tread depth (80cm for the regular stands, and 1m for the corporate levels), which means that the current Vélodrome capacity will fall to approx. 50K or less with these new seat & terrace tread requirements.

So actually, this is not a simple 7K expansion but a total refurbishment which includes a complicated 17K expansion including 6,000/7,000 new VIP and suite seats (including of course the new corporate and press areas etc) + a total refurbishment of all the concourses + a new roof covering all the seats as asked by the UEFA Euro 2016 requirements etc etc (not to forget the surrounding area: stadium esplanade/access, shopping center etc).

Seating and roofing criteria (extracted from the very official "UEFA Euro 2016 Final Tournament Requirements") :

-----------

Bonus (these safety and security criteria exist since the Euro 2004 if I remember well, except about safety nets which now are no longer allowed):

But it was rather unliked in Marseille, wasn't it? I mean the poor acoustics and long distances - I read these were widely critised. If so, I don't understand how anyone can criticise what they are doing to it. The stadiums should primarily serve those who visit it frequently.

Great redevelopment idea besides one aspect: Some truly crappy seats with obstructed views there on the stand behind the goal and the new main stand corner (elevated), those seats are at a drastically lower slope and in a dead angle, they are given a straight seating order, when they should be rounded. They should expanded the elevated corners... bad job given the whole enormous financial effort.

Don't agree with you!
2006 was the best in my opinion! The atmosphere in the great stadiums, but also the atmosphere at the fan miles and on the streets was unique.

wc 98 was also a great wc but the quality of the stadium was even worse to 94 USA, italy 90 and spain 82.

WC 2006 great stadiums but not great matches.
Only german stadiums and ambiance was great.

France 98 have seen terrific matches like England-Argentina 1/8 finals 2-2 +penalty session

Brazil-Netherlands sami final 1-1 + penalty session

Don't make laugh. USA had the best average attendance because of the big football stadiums.

But the atmosphere was awful. It was more like "well let's find out what soccer is-atmosphere"

in germany there was every day party during the wc, because in germany live so many foreigners from every part of the world. every night you heard differnent nationals celebrating and our city didn't even host a game but also was full of celebrating people around the world.

Thx for all these pix.

In my opinion, it's a pity they didn't try to reach 80k in Marseille.

Do you think it will be possible to upgrade the tiers behind the goals to add at least 10k seats ? Let's say in 20 years.
Won't these tiers look ridiculously small compared to Ganay and J Bouin once the current job is done ?

Does Marseille have a big enough fan base to sell the new place out every match? Or at least come close on a regular basis?

It was weird watching the Champions League match against Inter the other night and see a massive swath of the stadium empty where they were doing the construction.

This part of the qtadium is closed during construction.
The seats are the highest at 50 m.

yes, highest seat/row. So the height of the stands. Not the total height of the stadium which includes the roof

Yep.

BTW, about Marseille, I'm not sure but I think the 50m number includes the roof thickness (according to the section plans posted above).

:dunno:

Sebast
February 27th, 2012, 01:31 PM
For Marseille, the roof is a ~60m above the lawn, to the Stade de France, the announced value (46m) is the height of the roof

parcdesprinces
February 27th, 2012, 01:42 PM
^^ Thanks for the info about Marseille, cause I was not sure indeed.

BTW, 46m at the SdF is the height below the roof (i.e. without the roof thickness which is more than 4m in the middle of it, and of course it's without the masts as well).. so the last row at the centre of the East stand is approx. at 43m above pitch level I think.

At least, if I remember well, it's what I read in a book about this stadium which includes many plans etc.

I think the second tier of that stand is too far back. It would probably have worked better if it started in line with the top of that temporary screen. Perhaps that might have been more expensive though since it would have involved removing much more of the existing stand, and would need to be longer too.

I agree with you Rossoliver. I am waiting for the roof to make my opinion, but right now, I don't like the look of this venue. Marseille, the hottest fans in France, deserves a real "chaudron".

change of plan in construction timeline....

Jean bouin wont be destroyed this summer, but in december, north and south stand will have roof round about the same time as well.

If i understand correctly the stadium will have a roof above north south and the new ganay by january 2013

@ andre idol

I read on the arema website, who are buidling the stadium, that the roof will slowly arrive from the constructor in spain for the next six month.
It will be assembled on the ground before being erected late october. They are going to close (80%) north and south stand for 4 to 5 match and move supporters to the New ganay while the erect the roof above the north and south stand. then through the winter break they will fully open the ganay stand and destroy jean bouin.

Next year they will build the platform around they stadium similar to moses mabhida staium in south africa durban, so the supporters will be able to walk all around the stadium, which is currently not possible...
