Tabriz

Persian: Tabrîz

City in northwestern Iran with 1.3 million inhabitants at an elevation of about 1,400 metres above sea level. Tabriz is the capital of East Azerbaijan Province with 3.5 million inhabitants and has an area of 45,481 km².

The economical base of Tabriz is manufacturing, commerce and transportation. Local industries produce carpets, cement, textiles, food, footwear, soap, agricultural machinery, motorcycles and household appliances.

Tabriz is connected by road and railways to Teheran 800 km east, Maragheh 200 km south, and by road alone to Mahabad 300 km south and Khvoy 150 km northwest. Tabriz has an airport.

Central in Tabriz is the Blue Mosque, built in the 15th century, and a citadel, that was built as a mosque, from the 14th century. Another landmark is the 12-sided tomb of Mahmud Ghazan, ruler of the Mongol dynasty in Iran.

Tabriz university opened in 1946

Tabriz has a continental climate with hot and dry in summer and long and cold winters. The city lies in an earthquake zone, and the several earthquakes have destroyed many important buildings over the centuries.

Is this city the home of Sahdi ( the poet)?

Nah, He was Shirazi :)

This famous poet of Tabriz is Shahriar, who died around 8 years ago and that's his tomb on blackforests pics.

I do not mean to offend anyone, but what I would like to know is if the person who posted a picture like this posted it because he/she thinks that the melting pot of buildings of all different sizes, shapes and styles is attractive, and something to be proud of, or did he/she post it here merely to show that there have been a building boom in Tabriz. Because frankly I cannot understand how anyone could think that this is beautiful! It looks absolutely awful! They have massacred Tabriz! This is criminal. It's just a big jungle of unattractive buildings that have been erected without no planning and no consideration to harmony and esthetics! It's a disaster.

Shahgoli was so beautiful and serene - I have pictures of what it looked like before they ruined the surroundings. Just erecting modern buildings of all sizes anywhere and everywhere in any fashion and in any direction does not constitute progress nor does it make it beautiful by default. A building is beautiful if it's beautiful, not just by looking "modern", and urban harmony is achieved when harmony and a relative order between the different elements within the urban scenery is achieved. What we see in this picture is total chaos and disorder. A whole bunch of ugly buildings of different heights and shapes erected in a disorderly fashion. It's utter chaos. How incredibly sad, because one could have instead taken advantage of the beauty of Shahgoli and create spectacularly beautiful surroundings that would coexist in harmony. This is what happens when untalented people with bad taste and no education, and whose only interest is to make money rules a country! This urban nightmare is the "paradise" of the haji aghas.

Nice thread on Tabriz. I suggest to review the geographical data with reference to Tabriz entry in Wikipedia. For example Tehran is located at 600 km (and not 800 km) at southeast.

Maragheh looks terrible when you pass it on the train. The poorest neighbourhoods are by the railway line. Same with Tabriz. Its not a good introduction to the country when you are coming to Iran on the train from Turkey and this is all you see. I overheard one passenger say "It looks just like Pakistan!". At least the poverty is not hidden away and denied like in some places.

tabriz is looking nice, just need to have government to reduce hights so city's history does not get ruined.
heights has nothing to do with it.1st of all we need an unracist gov.we have a historical mosque named blue mosque,it has been opened since 2 years.before,it was closed.WHAT FOR?idk.since its opened alot of tourists go in it to see it.
we have a great ancient castle of Tabriz(arge alishahe tabriz),instead of using it for attracting tourists what did the gov do?turned the outter area of it to a place which friday prayings are held!in 1980(after the islamic revolution)the friday praying leader(emam jome) said there is not enough space.they dynamited that historical master peace to destroy it and make more space for themselves.yes,a disaster,FORTANANTLY it was made from good materials including some "egg's whiteness" on it which made it really strong and people and some organizations put the gov under pressure and it stopped demolishing it.even tho the dynamites screwed it.but it is still standing.
a picture of the castle after being demolished(some parts of it has been ruined)
http://up.iranblog.com/Files/312257b89e27475ead44.jpg
It was made in the early 14th century.to make it clear that how old that means, most of isfahan's structures made by safavid's were made in the 16th century
I have alot more to tell about how tabriz hasn't been treated the way it should have been but I don't want to make it a very long post

Yup. historical look and other factors. take a look at Russian cities. they pay attention to their culture and beautiful architecture. but unfortunately in Iran our architects are still trying to copy from west style buildings. let alone that they have rarely succeeded to copy a good example for our cement structured cities.

Tabriz is ok, but Baku is still a lot more beautiful. You should all check out the Baku thread in the Cityscapes and Skyline Photos section. It's such a gorgeous city.

Most of Iran's historical buildings were destroyed during the Pahlavi dynasty because they were seen as 'backwards' and today Iranians prefer Western architecture to Iranian architecture, so yea we got problems!! The modern Iranian architecture is really nice though, haven't you seen all the buildings they make? I think they have such beautiful designs, it's just that they are so European and I don't think that is fitting for Iranian cities. I don't know if we can ever revive the Iranian architecture, but right now we're building too many millions of buildings that have no Iranian culture on them, so what can we do?

I have a book with old photos of Tehran, and honestly those parts of Tehran are gorgeous if you look at the old buildings. I will try to photocopy them and post them somewhere in the forum later. Iranian architecture is amazing, so I dunno why Iranians don't like to use it.

true. we only build these buildings that are not modern nore old styled, they are just plain ugly unorganized buldings. il rather have iran looking like paris (although its not our style of architecture) than what it is right now, even if it is western and not our own. the problem is that they wanto make creative designs but since there is no proper restrictions they all look like ugly childish 70s buildings.

i only wish i was the head of sakhto saz (whatever it is in iran) and i would put some nice laws there and order the renovation and rebuilding of many of these cities to organized, modern in structure but persian styled in look.

as you know we need to change a lot of things in Iran. the fact is our students of architecture are taught with resources that some of them are old and faar from our own architecture. that's why you see a lot of cement buildings in tehran that are copied from new york backing to 1970's and 1980's. I think we need to rely on our own professors and give them more opportunities to revive the iranian architecture. and if we really want to enter new designs and construction technologies, we can get help from russians. i've been to russia. I think a lot of things in the russian architecture are alike with the iranian architecture. orthodox churches are similar to the designs iranians used to build their own holy shrines like mosques and iranian-designed churches. Russian architecture pays attention to values like beautiful meanings, spiritualism, geometric shapes, mathematical conceptions and so forth which are the values that you can find in the iranian architecture.

as you know we need to change a lot of things in Iran. the fact is our students of architecture are taught with resources that some of them are old and faar from our own architecture. that's why you see a lot of cement buildings in tehran that are copied from new york backing to 1970's and 1980's. Russian architecture pays attention to values like beautiful meanings, spiritualism, geometric shapes, mathematical conceptions and so forth which are the values that you can find in the iranian architecture.

hopefully, but till the time those animals are in charge all we will see is ugly buildigs and arab style mosques being erected everywhere. lol

You mean that piece of land that actually for thousand of years was/is inhabited by Iranian people and belongs to Iran, but was taken away by the Russians?

Actually, most of the mosques in the world have Sassanid elements of architecture. Islamic architecture is in fact Sassanid architecture.

Indeed. I think we've all made the point, so leave it there.

I agree that it won't end nicely, but he didn't initiate it.

I'm dissappointed: there were many projects in tabriz that I kept my hopes up for that fell flat on its ass.
