View Full Version : Los Angeles Skyline Renderings - Show us what you got
ArchiTennis October 26th, 2006, 06:40 AM :D well, with all these buildings going up in L.A. I thought it'd be cool if we could see some possible renderings of what our city will look like in a few years. Even fantasy renderings would be cool. I know I'm notorious now for being a little "sensitive" regarding some of the ones I've done, but I'm over that! :| I'll start by posting a few of the ones I've done...I encourage all of you to give some feedback...what do you think? what can change? what should be added or subtracted? things like that.

Westsidelife October 26th, 2006, 09:58 AM You should also add Park Fifth. It's 65 stories and will go right next to the Gas Company Tower.

Interestingly, the shorter tower in the Park Fifth complex is where the Symphonic Auditorium stood (see the R.I.P. Buildings thread...)

You know, I was actually considering adding a robot, but I was torn between putting the classic Giant Robot or something more Transformers-like.

Westsidelife November 24th, 2006, 11:46 PM Here is a photoshop rendering of the LA and NYC skylines merged together posted in the Urban PhotoShop Contest forum by Qazaq. Imagine if we had a skyline like that, LA would be one heck of a city!

archd1 November 25th, 2006, 12:01 AM OMG! I think LA will eventually look like this, but take the Empire State bldg out of the picture...
Westsidelife November 25th, 2006, 12:03 AM Our skyline will definitely be of that length but probably will not have that density.
godblessbotox November 25th, 2006, 12:18 AM looks like blade runner
maybe ax out the empire state so the LT can be back on top

That looks really nasty. Notice the dark clouds looming over and no sunshine.
We can and will have a denser skyline, but it'll never look like Manhattan, nor would I want it to. I'd rather our skyline look more Chicago-like than NY-like, where each building can be appreciated instead of one monolithic mass of structures.
Joey313 November 25th, 2006, 02:44 AM L.A will soon look like that but why more interesting:)
JRinSoCal November 25th, 2006, 07:21 PM Wow if LA had a skyline like that it would instantly become a world class city cus right now its just average city ya know:nuts:
Westsidelife November 25th, 2006, 10:05 PM NO. It's a world class city already and BY NO MEANS average.
Joey313 November 26th, 2006, 03:11 AM what if L.A look something like this:banana:
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g280/Joey313_photos/NYCL.jpg
FROM LOS ANGELES November 27th, 2006, 01:50 AM perfecto. But I would add a center point to the skyline, maybe a large park, or a taller building.

I don't think skylines matter much for Los Angeles
soup or man November 27th, 2006, 02:46 AM I agree. Just make it dense and I'll be happy.
FROM LOS ANGELES November 30th, 2006, 03:19 AM The US Bank still sticks up a lot in the pic, I like that.

FROM LOS ANGELES December 1st, 2006, 03:17 AM I like that render because it shows a realistic point of view, miid rises, and a lot of 5-10 story low rises, good work ;)

That's some huge-ass snowflakes there. Someone's gonna get killed!
A few years back it really did snow on the top floors of the USBT (then the First Interstate World Center). A few office workers were eyewitness to it and reported it to the Downtown News.
Actually, just to make it easy, why don't someone post a pic of the Pershing Square Ice Skating Rink?

croyboy December 29th, 2006, 08:24 AM nice... i've been looking on the internet for that particular l.a. scene as a screenshot, but no luck... hate the antenna modifications on all our beautiful towers though
Elsongs December 29th, 2006, 10:00 AM When does this supposedly take place? I laugh at the USBank, AON and City National Bank logos on the buildings because 10 years ago, those logos weren't even on those buildings! Who's to say they'll still be on 10 years from now? :)
Fern~Fern* December 30th, 2006, 05:06 AM I wish they would ban naming right on top of buildings instead of spires.
FROM LOS ANGELES December 31st, 2006, 10:25 PM The US Bank looked 100% better before that sign came along. But it helps on some buildings so they wont seem so dull.
The Baz January 1st, 2007, 12:32 AM I don't mind the US bank sign, but maybe that is because I've never seen the building without the sign. The Island was set around 2019 a mere 12 years from now. It was a good movie 3 out of 5 stars but bombed at the box office.

soup or man February 9th, 2007, 03:27 AM Not bad.
Westsidelife February 9th, 2007, 03:35 AM Good job. Though the skyline will be a little bit taller than that.
godblessbotox February 9th, 2007, 03:38 AM woooh... aperently i missed somthing important. what is that huge blue building?
or are these just in the mind of from los angeles
Westsidelife February 9th, 2007, 03:43 AM The large blue building is the Ritz-Carlton/Marriott Marquis @ LA Live.
FROM LOS ANGELES February 9th, 2007, 04:03 AM Can't wait to see Figueroa like that!
godblessbotox February 9th, 2007, 05:22 AM The large blue building is the Ritz-Carlton/Marriott Marquis @ LA Live.

phattonez February 10th, 2007, 01:39 AM Wow, downtown will look MUCH denser with these new buildings. The Ritz makes a huge difference.
Elsongs February 10th, 2007, 04:16 AM What about City House/The Olympic?
Westsidelife February 10th, 2007, 04:24 AM The City House/Olympic aren't there because you won't be able to view them from such an angle.
FROM LOS ANGELES February 10th, 2007, 06:29 AM Also the South Group project, and Grand Avenue are not there for obvious reasons.
Robert Stark September 22nd, 2007, 07:12 AM updates?
Taylorhoge September 23rd, 2007, 05:49 PM any renders of century city?
Westsidelife September 29th, 2007, 10:08 AM Here's a little somethin' I whipped up in my spare time. This is what the Los Angeles skyline will look like once Park Fifth, LA Live, Concerto (tower one), Hanover (wasn't topped off in the original photo), and LA Central are completed. The heights are a bit off, but the overall impact on the skyline is more or less the same.

godblessbotox September 29th, 2007, 08:32 PM nice
LAsam September 30th, 2007, 07:18 AM We have a nicely proportioned skyline :)
surfnspy September 30th, 2007, 06:23 PM wow, cool!
I know it is rude to ask, but could you add the Grand avenue towers since they seem to be a likely go project that will alter the skyline?
Pleeeeeese?
Now the big question is, where are we going to put our megatower that will compete with SF's new megatower?
CITYofDREAMS September 30th, 2007, 06:52 PM ^I don't think we have one of the works yet...
Fern~Fern* September 30th, 2007, 08:29 PM ^I don't think we have one of the works yet...
I guess you didn't read his comment correctly. He never said there was one at all. He'd ask where would we put one to compete, when we have it!!!!
milquetoast October 1st, 2007, 10:38 AM Interesting question. Where to put one of those. Center of downtown? Mid-city on Wilshire? Century City? Pacoima?
surfnspy October 1st, 2007, 11:50 AM Really tho, it is kinda fun to think about where it would make SENSE to put a megatower.
When you think about how this came to be in SF, they needed a new bus terminal and this set of giant towers is part of that.
It seems like L.A. maybe blew it with the wimpy towers around Union Station. Talk about Transit hub, right? How is it that it makes sense to put so much density at Lankershim, Cahuenga, HoHi, HoVi, etc and such a bland development at Union Station?
SO, where DOES it make sense in L.A?
Fern~Fern* October 1st, 2007, 06:04 PM Interesting question. Where to put one of those. Center of downtown? Mid-city on Wilshire? Century City? Pacoima?

it won't look much differant in ten years thanks to Weiss.
LosAngelesSportsFan October 25th, 2007, 09:55 AM you mean it will thanks to weiss. i count at least 5 new towers over 40 stories that are U/C, site prep or proposed right now.
LAsam October 25th, 2007, 10:08 PM you mean it will thanks to weiss. i count at least 5 new towers over 40 stories that are U/C, site prep or proposed right now.

Robert Stark October 25th, 2007, 10:25 PM you mean it will thanks to weiss. i count at least 5 new towers over 40 stories that are U/C, site prep or proposed right now.
Do they even have the space for it unless there going to replace smaller towers or the condo-complexes which I doubt will happen.
Christian urbanite October 27th, 2007, 01:59 AM Since I don't know how to make renderings, I will just describe what LA could look like in say 100 years. Most of this is probably just wishfull thinking.
I think LA could look like a Chinese city, except with the culture of LA. The whole city, from Hollywood to Long beach and all around, would be full of thousands if not millions of skyscrapers. The downtown would have huge 100+ story skyscrapers. Depending on what happens with global warming, the city will either be extreemely smoggy or extreemely clean.
Of course, that vision for LA might take more like 500 years, but it would be awsome to see the city look like that.
Joey313 October 28th, 2007, 12:33 AM I think that can happen in less time. Technology is not like before things move faster these days.
milquetoast October 28th, 2007, 02:23 PM Not in present day Los Angeles!
jessemh431 October 29th, 2007, 08:42 AM Does anyone HAVE renderings or can anyone MAKE renderings of what CC will look like? Also, do you think Long Beach and Wilshire Blvd will change much? Where else do you think may be getting a skyline?
BEATSLIM October 30th, 2007, 06:32 AM Yeah im interested in seeing the future Century City as well.
LASF has me intrigued....

LApride November 17th, 2007, 08:02 PM From which perspective (location wise) do you guys think LA's skyline appears the most massive?
The DT skyline looks much better from the east (10 freeway heading west). The skyline from the 101 hollywood coming in from universal city has many gaps because some buildings are lined up exactly in front of one another, so some are unrepresented. The view from the South is pretty nice. If you're on the 105, by compton, there is a great view....DT LA has the most deceptive skyline I've ever seen. Our skyline, for the most part runs north south. But our crazy freeway system gives us so many different angles we wonder if we're looking at the same thing.

gsgeorge March 20th, 2008, 04:30 PM Thanks for crediting me when you used my skyline photo! Looks like LA's skyline should really "balance out" in the coming years. Should be a good spread. I'm excited to see the new developments downtown.

DaGaucho April 7th, 2008, 08:24 AM I always thought the backdrop from the Tonight Show with Jay leno looked really cool with all the artificially coloured skyscrapers.
Can anyone tell if this is the actual (coloured) skyline or a rendering? The CFD seems to go on forever!! Could this be a 'real view' from burbank??
Quite a bad-ass view of LA.

Archi... that's a great rendering. Would you mind adding in The Grand, Park Fifth, LA Central, and South Figueroa to that rendering?

The L.A. Skyline is the one on the right side centered around the Library Tower where the moon is.
The Spired tower to the left is unknown.
FROM LOS ANGELES April 11th, 2008, 06:54 AM The spired building is the All American Building in NY.

Archi... that's a great rendering. Would you mind adding in The Grand, Park Fifth, LA Central, and South Figueroa to that rendering?
k...they should all be roughly the right height (given this perspective). Park Fifth won't really be seen from this view point, but I moved it to the side a little - should be pretty close to the right height (850')...also changed the rendering a little (trying to make it look a little more "real" - well..as much as 15 minutes will allow (have too many other renderings to do for school))

jessemh431 April 12th, 2008, 08:01 AM Dang, that's nice. If we could just fill in the area between 777 and LA Live, that would be an amazing shot. They skyline would be really long then.
BEATSLIM April 13th, 2008, 04:07 AM throw in metropolis when you have time archi! that would be 4 more towers between TCW and La Live
ArchiTennis April 13th, 2008, 05:24 AM throw in metropolis when you have time archi! that would be 4 more towers between TCW and La Live
k...what are the latest heights? they've changed a lot from the frist proposals (20 yrs ago?) what else should be in there? if u guys can just list a project and it's height...that'll help a lot (timewise)
Westsidelife April 13th, 2008, 05:51 AM ^ I wouldn't add in Metropolis yet. We don't know any specific information other than its vague profile of four towers.
CITYofDREAMS April 13th, 2008, 06:04 AM ^ yeap... that project has been dragged for the longest. If I'm not mistaken it's been like over 20 years in the drawing board.
jessemh431 April 13th, 2008, 06:05 AM What about that new proposed all office building? I forgot the name.
ArchiTennis April 13th, 2008, 06:15 AM oh yeah...how tall is it?
jessemh431 April 13th, 2008, 06:24 AM I believe it was around 800 ft. near 777 (the building)
BEATSLIM April 13th, 2008, 06:30 AM 755 Fig. I think its more 755ft height wise...its definitely a 700 footer minimum.
jessemh431 April 13th, 2008, 06:33 AM oh yeah...how tall is it?
Not sure exactly how tall, but I found the article and it says 50 stories and looks to be taller than 777. It is west of it, or right in that pic.
Post 1487 http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=147965&page=75
Westsidelife April 13th, 2008, 08:09 AM The proposed 755 Figueroa tower is 50 stories tall, two floors shorter than the 777 tower. But because it's to stand on a parking structure, it'll be a tad bit taller than the 777 tower.
Honestly, I don't see that one breaking ground anytime soon.
Westsidelife April 13th, 2008, 08:27 AM Archi, can you do daytime renders?

I don't either, but I was just trying to think of buildings proposed on the west side of downtown so he could add those in to that picture and bring more density to that side of the rendering. I can't wait till that gap is filled.

milquetoast July 2nd, 2008, 03:20 AM To answer the question of what to do with the county buildingshttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/HPIM1199.jpg
This covers the parcel, or lot, bordered by Grand, Tom Bradley,Temple and Hill. Two towers along Hill, at the corners of Bradley and Temple, leveled grass bordered by trees and accessable from all directions by a grand stairway on Hill and elevators within both towers. Stairs and ramps on Bradley and Temple. Height: 40 stories. Centrally located fountain between towers with 150 foot diameter reflecting pool frozen over in December for ice skating. 130 foot lighted tree for Holiday year end. Underground parking for county employees between towers. Both towers contain cheap eats (maybe a restaurant?) at ground level and employee access to 3rd level pavilions for eating. Park benches under trees throughout. Otherwise, level grass. Price: 520 million. Date: December, 2012 :)
San Marino Guy July 2nd, 2008, 03:40 AM I don't really like how it seems to cover up City Hall. It makes the building seem way too small surrounded by two giants.
milquetoast July 2nd, 2008, 03:55 AM That I can understand. The displaced county employees will need space relative to what they will loose when their original offices are removed. They will need towers about this size, and the 'framing' of City Hall from this vantage point near Grand Avenue is something that you'd have to get used to. On the other hand, City Hall is in the distance and the towers are taller only by 8 stories or so...
croyboy July 2nd, 2008, 05:20 AM i think it looks great (just my opinion though) and i thinks it's way better than what we have there now. it looks like this would also add park space to that particular lot/block
Westsidelife July 2nd, 2008, 05:28 AM No thanks.
FROM LOS ANGELES July 2nd, 2008, 08:39 AM Why not? Aren't we all on the same page here trying to get rid of those county buildings? Yeah we might loose City Hall from some perspectives but great cities often loose views of loved icons because of structures built for a certain purpose. We can't let those "nimbystic" thoughts linger in our heads.
Westsidelife July 2nd, 2008, 08:57 AM ^ The County buildings need to go not only because they're eyesores, but also because they do a great job at impeding pedestrian flow and accessibility of the park. It's ironic how you cry for more green space Downtown, yet at the same time, seem to accord with this 'proposal' -- it's pure fantasy.
dachacon July 2nd, 2008, 09:42 AM you know i've always had a fantasy of leveling all the buildings in that area, city hall, the county offices, law library, and the expansion of city hall across the street. raise the ground that they are on, put olive, grand, spring, and hill under ground, and building a massive tower to over look the new uniterrubted park. Since the city was founded in 1781, have a 1,781' tower housing all the city and county offices in it. this will please all the old people that remember city hall as being the tallest building in la, bringing back a little history. get rid of the crappy county buildings taking space from our "central park" and provinding an uniterupted walk from the Music Center to City Hall.
hows that to inflate Villaragosa's ego:)
croyboy July 2nd, 2008, 10:28 AM ^^ haha, not too great of an idea.
if all the county offices were in the same building and something were to happen to it, we would be left ungoverned.
Hunt July 6th, 2008, 01:54 AM That looks South American
that was what i was thinking:lol:
klamedia July 6th, 2008, 02:46 AM you know i've always had a fantasy of leveling all the buildings in that area, city hall, .................get rid of the crappy county buildings taking space from our "central park" and provinding an uniterupted walk from the Music Center to City Hall.
This makes one think that you didn't think through that very thoroughly.
