one of the best facades ever, but i totally dislike the heartless roof closure. a roof top with outflowing waves or fringing waves as a transition to the waves on the facade would have been much better.

too bad, but nevertheless still a top notch building.

It is really original that 3 out of 4 sides has all these curves and the 4th is absolutely straight. Weird looking at first, but then you get the idea: that this is how it supposed to be.

Eastern37
October 9th, 2011, 04:45 AM
^^ Its not actually how its supposed to be ;) If i remember correctly it was to expensive to have the curvy clad on all sides so they had to leave one straight.

This tower is 876 feet to the tallest occupied floor. There is at least 35 extra feet of mechnical space above that. I would say that this tower is around 910-915 feet/278-279m.

Can we consider it finished now?

And what's the correct final height?

Yes, I would say that you can move Beekman safely to the DN Archives.

Final height: ?

From CTBUH (http://buildingdb.ctbuh.org/building.php?building_id=699)

Height: Architectural 265.2 meter / 870 feet
Height: Occupied 252.1 meter / 827 feet
Height: To Tip 271.6 meter / 891 feet

Since the architectural height counts as the official one, we can keep the 870' figure.

I have to say while looking at this tower from midtown it doesn't seem to fit in. Like it's crazy unique design kind of backfired. However, I like the idea of a non traditional shaped building.

This is by far one of the greatest buildings in NYC. The way it contrasts with the rest of the skyline is what makes it stand out.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but from some angles, this building (mainly the shape, massing, and some elements of the façade) is somewhat reminiscent of the old World Trade Center.

Not nearly as high, but definitely has the same commanding presence on the skyline.

astonishing building, a landmark for centuries

while i like the flat side, it would have been more harmonious with ripples
the roofline also deserved some more attention
the flat panels should have been applied to the school part along with a grand entrance sculptured from the same cladding material

its a shame that they spent almost a billion dollars and paid so much attention to detail and still fell short of perfection

still id love to be able to live there
