no crown so no spire. Plus it doesn't need one. Since I've been a fan from the jump there nothing wrong with the top.

you are not the only one, beekman has that effect to look taller then it actually is. plus this tower has the highest roof in lower manhattan right now, no wonder it stands out. also, beekman's location near the waterfront makes it look tall and massive. the final height is probably about 900ft.

That's just some town way outside the city, isn't it?

Here's the history of the street, Beekman place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beekman_Place_%28Manhattan%29)

"is named after the Beekman family, an influential family in the development of the city. The neighborhood was the site of the Beekman family mansion, Mount Pleasant, which was built by James Beekman in 1765. James Beekman was a descendant of Willem Beeckman for whom Beekman Street was named."

Gehry's Beekman Tower to Hit the Market in Early 2011

http://ny.curbed.com/uploads/2010_6_beekman.jpg

Is Frank Gehry's Beekman Tower the most eagerly anticipated NYC rental building of all time? It's certainly the flashiest, and with the rippling skyscraper now hogging the Lower Manhattan skyline (without the aid of medical science!), we're wondering when these 900 slices of starchitecture will hit the market. A Curbed tipster writes we're one winter away:

Forest City Ratner has selected Citi Habitats to lease, Nancy Packes as marketing consultant and co-op as the advertising agency for Beekman Tower. Kick off meeting on Monday and leasing to commence early spring 2011.

According to a Forest City Ratner rep, leasing will begin in the first quarter of 2011, but that's all the developer will confirm. Will the apartments be snapped up quickly? We haven't heard much about prices or amenities, but Ratner can always throw in Nets season tickets with every signed lease, though that might actually discourage most people.

What is it with NY and reservoirs buy the way? These cones are just that, right?

By Eric Johnson:

New Yorkers love to brag about having the best-tasting drinking water in the country, although residents of high-rise buildings may not realize that their water makes an extra stop on its way from the reservoir. When high-rise residents turn on their taps to have a drink of water, take a shower or wash the dishes, the water comes from a tank located on the roof of the building. In addition to serving as a storage device, the tank creates water pressure through gravity which brings water to each apartment as needed.

I agree that NYC has GREAT water. Straight from the Catskills!

Beekman rocks. I wonder if this design will inspire Chinese and UAE area copies?

Absolutely amazing. It's shadow must be nice for those crappy low-rises. Im glad this part of Manhattan is finally starting to rise. Yeah, and those low-rises are staying put. This tower is in Lower Manhattan, which is the second skyscraper area of Manhattan. As someone who spent a lot of time walking around that island, New York has some of the best low-rise architecture in the country. I'd hate to see any of it go to be replaced by something like Tour Verre or other crappy glass boxes or architect's doodles that they call "work." On topic, I'm glad this tower only has a few more floors to go of cladding. I usually hold out on judging a tower until the outside is completely finished, but I must say, this is truly one of Gehry's greatest works, and I look forward to seeing it in person next time I'm in New York. I'm surprised I didn't notice it when I was there a year ago: I walked right through City Hall, and didn't even notice it.

The parts between Midtown and Downtown are one the most beautiful and livable areas (small shops, nice restaurants, etc) of the city, with good density as well. No need to make huge buildings in those areas of historic buildings from the 1880s. Beekman place is growing out of what used to be a neighborhood of Greenwich village like buildings from the Civil War or before, it was destroyed in the 60s by a madmen thinking like you: build, build, without thought. I suggest you take a look at The Destruction of Lower Manhattan.

Manhattan would significantly decline if those livable gorgeous low rise neighborhoods were wiped out (Tribeca, West Village, Greenwich Village, SoHo, etc) for skyscrapers.

Have you completely lost your mind?

^^ maybe some beekman style cladding on the verizon?? haha

Here are close-ups of the glass that will be used on the Verizon recladding. Permits were in place but everything stalled when the economy collapsed. This should restart in a year or so.

You must be on crack.

Manhattan would significantly decline if those livable gorgeous low rise neighborhoods were wiped out (Tribeca, West Village, Greenwich Village, SoHo, etc) for skyscrapers.

Have you completely lost your mind?

I have to stick my far away nose in here...............New York..Manhattan is what it is because it has Lower Manhattan and Mid Town with the marvellous mix of everything in between.( that's not ignoring so much else but referring to this post)....it is not meant to be huge skyscrapers on every inch of the place....It is spectacular New York because it has so much diversity ...and I love the place just as it is.....and know it as the never finished city but a city evolving knowing it has to hold onto all it has that makes it so unique.....hmm I don't have a way with words but that's how I feel......and I see my post refers to the reply to the post that got me to make my post not the reply above...sorry

As amazing as this tower looks in photos, in person, it's utterly surreal.

This building gives new meaning to the term "standing wave".
