Looking down on China Town and beyond. There's another great night shot of Beetham as well. Click on my choice set. It's in there.

Well they are really huge and personally i dont like them, but something needs to be done to St Marys street during the transition period to part pedestrianisation. The Eisteddford is in Cardiff in a few weeks / days so i think its like sticking a plaster over a spot (or in this case over the mis mash of paving and signage etc.) by making people look up and see the great architecture along st Marys street.

could be something to do with the old railways? Lots of the railways in Switzerland have toothed rails like this for extra purchase on inclines and for very heavy loads when engines where not that powerful!

Great pics by the way.

Rather large yawn at all this tiresome drivel. In terms of current street scape my vote has to go to Glasgow, although it is evident that all the major Cities in the UK have some stunning urban areas ... sadly most have also been blighted by bombs and dodgy planning decisions. Having just trawled through most of this thread may I offer a big thank you for all the photographs posted ... truly enjoyable.

The art on Urbis looks terrible- simply because of it's execution. Why on earth did they not do it in the same colour? It's a very good idea but completely doesn't work with white.

Its manchester's answer to some big urban art contest i think, several other cities around the world are taking part, so i dont know if it's suppose to relate to the urbis or not, urbis is just being used as the canvas. I think.

One of those famous arcades - just off the main shopping thoroughfare, Briggate - a 10 second walk from Harvey Nics.

Nothing in the current centres of Liverpool and Manchester are any where near that bad. Leeds is just incredibly ugly compared to these fine cities. Besides, the scouse and manc forummers don't post up bollocks all the time the way Wiggley does, so I don't care to provoke them.

October 19th, 2008, 11:40 PM
Manchester might have better shopping in reference to the shops themselves at the moment, but Leeds wipes the floor when it comes to shopping experience. It's far more pleasant to shop in Leeds than Manchester*- spacious Briggate is heaven compared to crowded Market Street. I'm glad that Leeds City Centre is not dominated by an Arndale style shopping centre, and that the majority of its shopping is open streetscapes or elegant arcades.

*I really must point out that I'm not saying its necessarily better to shop in Leeds, but the experience is definitely better. Its far more compact and easy to navigate. It's a shame so many shops are in the hell hole that is the Arndale Centre.

No Tony..Liverpool posters were told to lighten up because of the personal attacks and racist comments which were becoming quite nasty (and incidently only reinforced stereotypes abouts scousers). They were totally welcome to city bash, given that it was the city bashing thread.. but chose to go down a slippery slope - which is why people were telling your lot to calm down.

This thread *isnt* the city bashing thread, and as such, tit for tat crap about other cities isnt welcome and only spoilts such threads. Thats all from me regarding this.

It wouldn't just be cool it would form a really useful function of tying neighbourhoods and various points of economic activity together. Given the route and dense populations the ovy served any British city would kill for an asset like that now.

On the pics Herr Rathbone threw up, they're so anti people, anti urban, inhumane. Forget where they are in relation to his post they're a disgrace and reminder of what happens when grandiose planning schemes take hold of a city and kill it.

Herr Rathbone
October 20th, 2008, 10:54 PM
No Tony..Liverpool posters were told to lighten up because of the personal attacks and racist comments which were becoming quite nasty (and incidently only reinforced stereotypes abouts scousers).

Umm.. Which racist comments exactly? All I did was post a picture of an Indian train and you then contacted Bammy and cried foul - despite the fact that you are one of the most demented and hateful forummers on SSC.

And what stereotypes about scousers? The logic of what you are saying is the same logic the bigot uses pal; you just aren't bright enough to see it. If you knew Leeds anywhere near as well as I do (i.e. if you weren't simply a smelly student who has adopted it as your new home), you'd know a bit more about the reputation of Leeds folk when it comes to racism. Hence why white people can no longer walk through areas of Chapel Town and Armley after 6pm.

Anyway, if you get that chip off your shoulder then I won't have recourse to keep posting lovely pics of the Leeds your stats don't show. I have loads of the horrible, shitty estates choking the city centre - Little London, Burmantofts, Seacroft (the largest council estate in Europe), Gipton, to name but a few.

It's a testament to the humility of the Liverpool forummers that they haven't torn into you after I posted up those pics - you really deserved it after the way you've behaved towards them. I guess they, unlike I, are unwilling to lower themselves to your level. Perhaps you should apologise to them?

Ps. why don't you invest in a camera, then you won't have to keep ripping lame pics of Leeds off Google.

Beautiful building, great public realm in fornt of it too!

i personally dont think its a lovely building. Although big inside, and depth, it looks small from the outside, and looks like it could do with a clean. It is in a nice spot thought, next to the carriage works theatre on millenium square, and just round the corner from the city art gallery, the henry moor institute, and the town hall.

Look, can we just drop it already. If you want to bitch, then do it elsewhere (The City Bashing Thread would make sense).

To steer us back on topic:

^^ For someone who apparantly has me on ignore, it's odd that he has pretty much become my stalker, and 2 thirds of his posts are about me

I have to say, Worcester, one of my nearest cities, & a population of just 95,000 people, has a better 'feel' to it's high street than Leeds. The buildings & shop frontages along Briggate have a 'small town' feel to them, not a major city feel at all. Worcester city centre feels a lot more 'grand' ..... this isn't having a go btw, just my personal observation.. :)

.... and off it's main shopping street it has streets like this ^^ :)

aw, well shucks, thats very sweet of you  but lets be fair to Manchester, it has its own style too :)

p.s. the cone on the Iron Duke's head is a long-standing Glasgow tradition. sometimes his horse can be seen sporting one too. perhaps even the same one - who knows! :dunno:
