Hereford's got the best shopping streets I've been to in the UK. It's a nice small city to be in with wide, public space between plenty of shops. Beautiful cathedral, river etc and a number of markets and fresh food outlets. I'm looking for pictures

I did my foundation degree there and it was a nice place to be... for a year. Once you've walked down from the colleges and past all the roads, retail parks etc it's a pretty decent place. There's a park near the river just as good as the Quarry in Shrewsbury, and the shops are pleasant places. Are there Hereford forumers on here?

Yes, same.

My nearest city like that is York, about 35km away. Not a fan at all. Never seems to change; it's just preserved as it is, and any new development has to fit in rather than contrast and complement the old. I suppose that's what the tourists want though.

Chester as well. I occasionally get forced to go there by, er, someone close to me because it has a Habitat. What a miserable experience I always find it. Piddly little toy town streets, mock-tudor buildings, and a stomach-ulcerating air of smugness radiating from much of the population. No offence if anyone here is from Chester, but really, it's shit.

They probably aren't "mock-tudor" but the real thing!! You find mock-tudor buildings on 1980's housing estates :)

Yup! I did use the term 'mock Tudor' knowing that it's more commonly applied to the type of houses that eighties footballers used to buy, but the fact is, Chester's Tudor stylings are Victorian fakery too!

That carbuncle is the biggest stain on the face of Shrewsbury. Give me the Market Hall any day over that tosh. The council offices are :puke: as well.

Gherkin
October 22nd, 2008, 12:08 AM
The council offices are the same as every other concrete turd in the country. At least they aren't trying to reflect the beauty of Shrewsbury's beautiful Tudor buildings... they're just plain ugly. I'd rather work in Cineworld than the council buildings.

What date? The Tudor part is real, hence the ridiculous angle of the building. Tourists are always taking photos of it. The interior and shop below have presumably been refurbed numerous times.

Gherkin

You've got good eyes! Your guess is as good as mine, but given the number of original Tudor buildings in the town; it's probably a restoration of a proper Tudor house/shop.

I love cathedral towns, they are picture perfect most of the time, but then if they had been redeveloped we would have another coventry! I liked hereford (even though it was raining). Each cathedral city has something different to offer, and classing them all in the same is a bit unfair IMO.

Oxon business park near Shelton.

I agree they never change, they're just like museums and when something is new thats slightly different everyone has a fit. In Shrewsbury everyone went nuts because a 36m tall hotel was proposed in probably the lowest and ugliest areas of the town centre :ohno:

It's probably South John Street which is the open air mall bit of Liverpool One but the whole area including Whitechapel, Church Street and Lord Street is very busy.

If there's a retail dominated street more impressive than Buchannan Street in the UK though, I haven't seen it. It's the fancy arcades that look like doorways and open up in to wonderful spaces that get me.

That concrete monster is a bit of controversial building. It has its fans and a quite a few of them. Its been recommended for listing by English heritage and the city council are trying to get an immunity from listing certificate. They plan to smash it down and create another (probably) Brindleyplace-esque area whether its listed or not which doesn't show their conservation instincts in a good light.

edit: you probably know but they've added loads of Manc to Live Local Birds eye view, but it's still quite patchy and the city centre still isn't on there but give it a few weeks and Manchester'll be on there properly I suspect.

re: 7 & 8 I didn't even realise those pics where of somewhere in Liverpool myself to start off with as I don't recall ever seeing that avenue/alley to be honest, but they were tagged liverpool so i looked it up and yes its in town! Well, just a few in the tiny "old town" area. But I would rather call them narrow streets than alleys. Compared to other European cities Helsinki doesn´t have that many alleys though. Furthermore I really like the industrial look of alleys in the UK.

Pic I took last christmas. The streets in Helsinki don´t get much more narrow than this.

More likely a highly ornate letter S. Which is what the dollar sign is, of course.

Short for a family name, perhaps or something of religious significance? "Sacred to...", for example?

Dan B
November 20th, 2008, 04:36 PM
^ I've seen it before at Undercliffe Cemetery in Bradford, big old epic Victorian graveyard. I wondered also what an apparent dollar sign was doing on a gravestone. I think on closer inspection it did look to be an 'S' and possibly a 'H'. Guess this was some sort of tradition or design back then.

Actually found it now:

IHS

Sometimes looks like a dollar sign. IHS stands for the first three letters of Jesus' name in the Greek alphabet.

Here's another meaning for IHS, contributed by Jim Miller:

This symbol also stands for "in hoc signo", Latin for "by this sign we conquer", referring to the cross. It is actually more involved than that, and apparently also has some fraternal applications.

Here is the Wikipedia entry for this phrase:

Theyre all amazing.

The only one I've not seen in the flesh is Glasgow which I expect will blow me away from the pictures I've seen. From the choices above, its difficult, but Manchester wins for me becasue there is so much quantity with the quality, although Birmingham has some amazing areas, Leeds too - Leeds incredible actually. Sheffield was a massive surprise to me when I first went there as it was so mcuh bettrre than I expected. And Newscastle! Just wow, street after street of fuckin wow!

Visited Oxford for the first time since school a few days ago... not surprisingly also wow!

Only a few cities have got the street as a whole sorted. meanign architecture, street furninshing, street surfacign and materials. A real winner is a mixed surface street where people and cars have shared priority. Newcastle's Grey Street is my big overall winner.

I went there the other week, and it's a lovely little square, and a vast improvement on what was there previously. I was a little disapointed because I thought the square (quakers friars right?) would be totally surrounded by restaurants in the development, which would have made for a great evening area in the summer, but alas, the Raymond Blanc is pretty much the only restaurant on the square.

Overall though, it's great, and I agree it looks Spanish.

I'm really not a fan of that eggbox building. Sometimes I hear people praise brutalist architecture, but in nearly every case I hate it.

Having said that, it has it's merits in that it has allowed cities to progress. Our cities, in many cases, would not have been able to welcome modern architecture alongside old without some demolition.

Well, considering it has a population smaller than Leeds, I'd say it's doing pretty damn well. It's a great streetscape, architecture, cafe culture, bar culture, nightlife vibe, etc, etc, etc, lovely place to be.

Hmm, interesting topic there. I have to say since I moved to Dublin from Oslo during my teens in the late 90's I think the streetscape has declined due to greater traffic and pollution. Also, we're a bit obsessed by the suburbs, sea, lakes and mountains on our doorstep, so the city centre is unfortunately overlooked as some sort of regrettable necessity. I think that regional cities in the UK have been making far more of an effort on restoration and rejuvenation than Dublin, which is a great pity for the city. Hopefully one day we'll learn from regional cities in the UK and capitals of continental Europe and look after what we have better.
Pictures to come. I have loads now, so hopefully I wont spam the thread!
P.S I have to agree with subliving that Dublin does have a bit of a mini-londonish feel about it.

So basically Dublin would have won this poll had it been an option.

I like Dublin and agree about the London feel. It's got a capital buzz to it despite it's small size. I love how the Liffey is outlined by the busy streets, and I really like Phoenix Park.

But I think many of Dublin's merits have been built up over history naturally, rather than Dublin actually making an effort to have a good streetscape as UK Regional cities have. Although now Dublin and Ireland as a whole is putting money into it's cities and transport networks and it's paying off; a high quality streetscape for a vibrant city.

Well, I guess the original focus was on the UK rather than the UK and Ireland, so I guess it makes sense that Dublin wasn't included in the original poll.

I spent so long taking the bloody pictures that I needed to show them off somewhere, so this thread seemed like a suitable place within the UK and Ireland forum.

I have to admit the shots are fairly selective, unfortunately there's a lot of grot in the city centre as well, especially on the northside. I have to say I do envy the enthusiasm about rejuvenation in regional cities in the UK. While you're right about money being spent on transport Leeds No.1, very little is spent on asthetics and public spaces compared to other comparable cities! People here simply don't care if the city looks like a bit of a mess, there seems to be alot more pride in cities in the UK and overseas compared to here!

Plus from the looks of it very little looks to have been swept away in the redevelopment of the 60s and 70s which happened so much elsewhere, largely due to bomb damage i know but still lovely streets like those in Dublin, albeit a little more run down would have been replaced by a concrete office block or something. And all this in the name of progress??!!

As a resident of the city I'd say that on average a pint is around €5 and may vary between €4.25 and €6.50. There's a price freeze on alcohol for the next year too, due to the recession:cheers:! I read somewhere recently that it's the second richest city in the world in terms of average income(and also has lowest taxes in europe), so I guess it's hardly surprising things are so expensive. It's def cheaper than London and Nordics like Copenhagen and Oslo. It's extortionate compared to most cities though!:ohno:

It has that Brussels-esque quality of being basically inoffensive but also completely lacking any substance. It is alright for two days (at least a quarter of which must be spent in the Guiness museum), but any longer than that and you soon realise every street looks the same.

How can you describe somewhere as 'any European city' when Europe has more diversity in it's 10,000,000km2 than any other continent on Earth? Every European country and in turn their cities are full of different people speaking different languages living in radically different cities architecturally.

Totally agree! Whatever about Dublin, it can rely on its nice suburbs and beautiful natural surroundings to get it by in terms of character and charm, but Brussels' old town is definitely one of Europe's architectural treasures. Lived there for a year; the view from monte des artes has to be one of the most beautiful skylines in Europe, and La Grand Place at night is just magical.

I have been inside Glasgow Cathedral and it certainly has a more gothic and 'evil' (as people here describe) feel to it. Quite an imposing place. The museum across the road is quite nice too.

Do you not think there is a bit of delusion with London? Yes there are lots of nice buildings but it's all proportionate to size. London has endless collections of ugly buildings like all cities.

I think they are pretty representative of the streetscape of Arundel, as i said there was no better forum for them. Also most of them are taken from the streets of Arundel, so how are they not streetscapes (excluding the one from a field)?

the cutting edge warehouses under the bridges. it's such a compelling image: that last pic esp, the diffusing sunlight the general uneasy feeling, it's just beautiful. bath is dull and frank.

Bath is anything but dull! Especially due to its large foreign student population and unrestricted buskers

people say the same about Edinburgh when in fact it is very vibrant. edinburgh's dense urban fabric of tenements makes for more exciting, varied and active neighbourhoods than the english equivalent of terraced housing (or worse). Some parts of Edinburgh's city-centre, Princes Street or the touristy Royal Mile, can sometimes seem a tad dull and lack the vibrancy of other british city centres, but thats simply because the action is elsewhere.

some people confuse new architecture with vibrancy but new builds are often sanitised, exclusive apartments for young wankers, or boring office blocks for worker drones. i cant think of anything more dull! a better correlation (though still misleading) would be the density of the built environment and edinburgh (and even bath) scores highly on that count.

Newcastle confuses me. There is much great architecture in that city, but nothing seems to happen at street level. Where are all the cafes, pubs and restaurants and more importantly where are all the people?

Newcastle confuses me. There is much great architecture in that city, but nothing seems to happen at street level. Where are all the cafes, pubs and restaurants and more importantly where are all the people?

there's a ridiculous amount of pubs in Newcastle, it's probably one of the biggest party-cities in europe. but you only see the crowds related to this activity at night. the quayside for instance, can be pretty dead by the day, but on a friday night there will be literally thousands of people out to the extent that pedestrians take over the streets and cars have a difficult time negotiating the traffic.

there's a good amount of cafes but outdoor terraces are very very rare, maybe that's to do with the climate. Jesmond, the poshest inner-city suburb, has an entire street filled with the outdoor terraces of cafes and bars.

also, the main shopping area is a bit further north from the georgian section of the city-centre, so the main crowds are around there. related to this, a lot of the shopping is interiorised in the Eldon Square mall, a pathetic and ugly monolith that wiped away dozens of old streets and squares. incredibly this mall is in the process of being extended - it seems we've learned little from past errors. :ohno:

Hi JPD,

I know its not really the place for it but could you tell me the plans for Eldon Square, please don't let them be eating into any more of Grainger Town. Eldon Square is one of the most horribly ugly mazes I have been to, like having a shopping centre in a a cavern, it should be demolished not extended.
