Is replacing.Ha whats taken them so long?

When it comes to public realm British cities are seriously lagging behind other European cities (see the links I posted). Now why is that? Its a serious question and not an attempt to diss Britain.

This country has some fantastic architecture but instead of showing it off like other countries it hides it behind clutter and other rubbish.

The reason is that the motor car has enjoyed absolute hegemony for at least the last 50 years in British cities. In some cities this has meant historic buildings and neighbourhoods being demolished for motorways to be built through their central area's relegating humans to underpasses and bridges. It's no wonder public spaces have been degraded.

You get a street with no cars you immediately lose the need for traffic lights, no entry signs, one way signs, parking signs, filtter signs, pavements, parking bays, crash barriers and the rest of the rubbish that clutters up streets.

Coupled with the above British cities are only just reversing almost a centuries worth of neglect and attempting to diminish the (mostly) negative effects of post war planning . If you think it's bad now look at pictures of UK cities in the 1970's and early 80's.

I prefer to think about the public realm improvements that are taking place in cities such as Mcer, Liverpool, Belfast, Cardiff etc which for the most part are working towards delivering the streets back to the people.

I dont think British cities are lagging behind our European counterparts.

Take a look at the pics I posted. From top to bottom - Malaga (more or less your typical Spanish resort) would you find streets as clean and clutter free in any British resort?Nope.Granada - again beautiful clutter free street wont find anything similar in Oxford Cambridge or Durham.Bilbao - an industrial city and the same story again.

Or lets take Brugges and Bath. Both cities have some amazing architecture but you will not see battered railings clutter coloured asphalt congestion or shabby pavements in Brugges. It has constructed ring roads and underground garages to make most of its inner city traffic/car free. There are no tacky shop fronts or ugly sattelite dishes. Most of its inner city is either pedestrian or shared surface. It invests heavily in public realm and so on.Bath looks like a freaking slum in comparison.

We could also take infrastructure - another field where Britain is lagging.....I suppose Karldiff is right its all because of the car.....

There is talk of pedestrianising Deangate in Manc,it must be nearly a mile in length and would make a great European style street with more trees planted and some quality paving. It already has quite a few pavement cafes and these would be more enjoyable to use if it where not for the traffic. Come on MCC... fuck car users and get it done asap

Its always annoyed me this about the UK ,it seems cost cutting is always the no1 priority. I have been to Cities in so called poor counties like Croatia (Zagreb,Split) and even here the paving and street furniture(what there is of the latter) in their cities centres is higher qaulity than the UK. You come back here and you see that cheap crap red and black herringbone style brick paving covered with chewing gum in most town centres coupled with the generic fake victorana black and gold street clutter. How shit are we.We cant even get the street lighting consistant.

Notice, despite the pavement being rebuilt/widened, and pedestrians having supposed absolute priority over all other modes (on paper), the road/traffic still dominates with a wide 2/3/4 lane layout (depending where on Deansgate)?

Exactly, If Deansgate ever got fully pedestrianised it would become a fantastic area, the Ramblas of the north:).The area where spiningfields meets deansgate could become a large piazza.A fountain feature could be put in the middle for example ,how great would this look with the modern archetecture of spinningfields and the rylands library building as backdrop. I hate the Uk's obsession with cars.

La Rambla has four lanes of traffic, which adds to the buzz and vibrancy of that particular street. It's perfectly possible for vehicles and pedestrians to co-exist, it's just a matter of good design. The bottom end of St Mary Street in Cardiff for example now has wide pavements, with single stage pedestrian crossings at grade with the pavement made out of granite blocks. There's still a load of buses that go past but it manages to feel like pedestrians have an equal right to be there.

I know we lack the grand boulevards of many European cities, but I actually get a bit annoyed by the tendency of planners in this country to just go for complete pedestrianisation as the answer to everything. More often than not this just frustrates people with legitimate business in the city, and creates bland, plain streetscapes which are dead late at night.

Yeah but those 4 lanes are extremely narrow and more importantly run down the edge of the street. It actually creates quite a narrow pavement on the shopfront side, which wouldn't be an ideal model for Oxford Street.

It's mostly typical victorian gothic around there as far as housing stock goes, though the best places to look (assuming they're Georgian) for that style is near(ish) to the Uni.

The biggest problem with most British towns and cities is:

We, as a nation, stuff our increasingly fat, greasy faces with sweets, crisps, Coke, KFC, McDonalds and Burger King, then dump it on the street like animals. And, we chew gum and spit it out on the pavement.

A lot of American cities have an issue with litter and gum. It's no surprise - they're fat bastards too. Indeed, they started the whole thing.

Most of Europe doesn't eat junk like we do, and don't snack on the go like we do, they tend to think it uncooth. As a result, litter is not as huge a problem for their civic authorities as it is for ours.

Im in Tokyo at the moment and there is NO litter at all. Nowhere, not seen a single piece. Their streetscape seems to work however with little (if any) pedestrianisation, in fact getting across the street here is a daunting task. Super Crossings (shibuya for example) help a lot but I can't help but feel this is a Car dominated city. Some streets even have Expressways running 50ft above them on stilts. I think Tokyo gets away with it because all the flashy lights and signs make you look up rather than down?

The building on the left (The Capital) is a 440,000 sq ft office blob with its own car park. The bag o' shite to the right is a hotel with surface parking to the rear. The Capital is supposed to be getting tarted up (probably put back until economic recovery), but the shite hotel will stay as a reminder of how desperate Liverpool was for investment in the 1990's, and the kind of shite that was allowed to be built.

It can be done quite easily too, theres a 6 lane road between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace that manages to fit in quite well and be quite pedestrian friendly :s Ill post some pics later.

What's the frogs name? It's cute.

Sheffield, because it has lots of squares and parks (more than any European city). And fantastic architecture at street level, ie benches.

Jesus. I was around 12 when I first saw 'Threads'. It completely and utterly terrified me, profoundly so. Haunted me afterwards. Production wise, it's dated of course, but it is still a powerful, brutal, shocking, no holds barred piece of television.

Some excellent pics there cambrian, they got me thinking though. In the mid 80s' Liverpool streets where that deserted during the 'rush hour' on a normal week day (only slight exageration). It used to be like Moscow in the 60s'.. all wide boulevards with no fucking traffic on them!

Actually, 90% of UK cities could learn a lot from Vilnius and its regeneration schemes, that have transformed the city. Lithuanian scenery is beautiful, the people are friendly and the country hasn't been communist since it was allowed to actually make its own decisions. I didn't realise famous people made a country good. Kerry Katona a famous UK personality - does that make the UK better than Lithuania?

fuck off you nerd..lithuania is a tinpot ex commie waste of space.Name me 2 famous lithuanians..you know what you cant you knobend!!..what a shit country.

Adam Bernard Mickiewicz (Adomas Mickevičius)
Kanuty Rusiecki (Kanutas Ruseckas)
The Tyszkiewicz (Tiškevičiai) family.
The Radziwiłł (Radvila) family.

I doubt you heard of them, since clearly youre a bit of an arse with no education. However maybe youve heard of these -

John and David Suchet.

Still, Lithuania saved Europes arse from the Muslims (and a bit earlier from the Mongols too) at The Battle of Vienna, when heroic and famous Winged Hussars charged down the hill in what was the largest cavalry charge in Military history and put the armies of Kara Mustafa Pasha to flight. The same Commonwealth Armies also fought on the side of Napoleon and scored some brilliant victories. Yeah the country was pretty cool and still is. In Vilnius they even rebuilt a medieval palace, exactly what Id like to see done in the UK.

To be honest, as lovely and amazing as those squares are, there are thousands of them around Europe. There are however very few European cities that have a nice mix of old and new without vast swathes of post war infill. What i was trying to showcase was a completely new area of the city that integrates well, creating a streetscape of mixed uses with interesting modern architecture. If you just want an old fashioned square with rather predictable paving materials (ie the unbiquitous old european square) then im sure i could find a pic. Apart from the smaller older cities, British cities are not going to be old histrical museums.

It's not being a prick, your telling the truth. There's a much better composition, height, quality and even number of highrises in Vilnius than pretty much anywhere here. Only two that stand out are London and Liverpool.

So many magnificent shots on this thread. Manchester is so varied, Leeds n Liverpool have so many gems. And why are Sheffield and Belfast not options? some of the best public realm I've seen are in these cities. And in Birmingham too, which is sadly blighted the worst by post-war planning. It has so much potential - the first test is making sure that spaces around the space ship (New Street) are world class. Cover up the airspace above the trainlines for starters!

But i've seen all those city centres, I want to see where the people live. What people walk down to get to the train station, bus/tram stop, look out there windows at..

Belfast, as mentioned on another thread has some superb residential streetscapes. The best way is really to use Google Streetview.

I can recommend, Malone Road, Antrim Road, Ravenhill, Lisburn Road, Holywood, Cultra and Stranmillis Road. They are the wealthiest areas but as such are the most lovely.

Liverpool has a great architectural heritage. I think thats what makes it stand out from quite a few other cities. It's a feeling that the city has been building quality for 200 years at least.

Most cities have fairly decent civic stuff from the Victorian/Edwardian era and some cities have some great commercial buildings (Glasgow particularly) but Liverpool seems to have had decades long competition as to who can build the best building.

I may just be speaking for myself here but it must be particularly galling to Liverpudlians that in recent times it's profile has been so negative (poverty, crime etc) when clearly apart from the last say 40 years it must have been a fabulously wealthy city. If I'm talking bollocks there then you'll be sure to let me know I have no doubt....:)

Thanks for the pics Yoshef, great stuff.

I think you've got it more or less right, although the oldest surving building is nearly 300 years old. What the pictures dont show are the odd derelict or unkept building, eyesores and empty plots which detract from the feel and of which there are more than say Manchester or Glasgow (the latter looking at the photographs on here), although the city is regenerating them slowly.

Looking at these photos, Belfast and Liverpool are looking very pleasing on the eye. I think Liverpool pips it in terms of diversity.. perhaps more regeneration in Belfast will see that change. But Manchester in this regard is nosing ahead of the major UK cities (outside London).

Yoshef you mentioned Manc and Gla having less dereliction than Liverpool, certainly for Manchester but Glasgow's city centre is not quite as complete as Manchester's i'd say:

http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/GG-ORG/Glasgow%20at%20Night/Trongate.jpg

The buildings in the distance on the right are the missing jigsaw in Glasgow's impressive Argyle street. The sight has been owned and neglected by Selfridge's for years.

Do the big English cities have any problems with owners sitting on their hands, holding up regeneration of an area?

^yep. in newcastle chelsfield/multiplex/brookfield have gradually, over the past 13 or so years, bought up around 40 acres on the east side of the city-centre in the hope of eventually developing it into a retail area (a real pie-in-the-sky plan imo).

they've let many great, historic buildings fall into disuse or disrepair, and get tatty in the meantime. and as they hold the land there's been pretty much zero development there, so even with the best will in the world it will begin to look dated compared to elsewhere in the city centre. and when tenants gradually empty out over time, they don't do their best to advertise the properties- preferring to keep them empty so they can demolish in a decade's time. it's disgraceful really and they should have the land CPO'd from them, they're the definiton of absentee landlords, the fact that the land is owned by a billionaire development corp should make no difference.

yeah Bill Davies's Walton Group and Frenson spring to mind. Bill Davies sat on Exchange Flags and the old Post Office (MetQuarter) for years. Frenson have held up the regeneration of Ropewalks..

Frenson owns a large estate in the Ropewalks area of Liverpool, next to the Scandinavian site. THE estate was originally sold for Ł7m by the post-Militant cash-strapped Labour council in the form of 309 properties to Charterhouse Estates. Mr Stone was a shareholder and director of the company.

In 1992, Charterhouse collapsed, owing the council Ł3m, and in 1993 Mr Stone helped set up Frenson, which bought the estate from the receiver for Ł5m.

Holding such a large amount of property, Frenson has in the past come under criticism for not having been quick enough to develop its portfolio. But the company says it will only develop the property in line with demand.

In terms of regeneration both cities are way ahead of Liverpool. Much of the regeneration in Liverpool has focused on the waterfront and on an area that hadn't been developed properly since the germans flattened it in world war 2.

Aerial view showing the area around the five way junction of Duke Street, Hanover Street and Paradise Street (the former Sailors Home, now demolished, stands at the junction) in July 1946. The widespread devastation caused by bombing during the Second World War is apparent. Liverpool Old Custom House on Canning Place stands roofless in the foreground after firebomb damage in the Liverpool blitz of 1941. It was demolished in 1950.

Got their priorities right then. I can never tell though because all the photos on here obv. show the best Liverpool has to offer. I think the Capital of Culture/Talls Ships year has marked a turning point for the city's fortunes, the same way the Commonwealth Games did for Manchester.

I think all cities in the UK suffer from the same problem. In Cardiff there a few really good streets with great architecture but every single one is blotted by at least a couple of absolute stinkers. Inappropriate 70's concrete shit or old buildings left to rot away. Even the historic Coal Exchange - a great building and quite important in it's way, it was the epicentre of the coal industry before WW1 - is slowly disintegrating due to neglect.

Liverpool scores highly for it's Georgian architecture in my opinion, same as Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh etc. Who doesn't have a soft spot for Georgian terraces? Was there ever a more graceful style?

Last summer a series of cultural events took place down at the Pier Head. In this case, a visual display was projected onto the front of the Port Of Liverpool building (notice the silver shrouds covering the equipment just behind the trees). That is what the people were waiting for. :)

some great Panos there Leeds. It's very hard to get a good panorama when there are crowds around, if you haven't got a very wide angle lens. Whenever I try, I always seem to end up with about 4 or 5 sets of twins! In fact you can see some in this picture...

I think you get what Cardiff is about Conor, its not a museum and its not a new city. it is a great compact city that mixes all different types of architecture in a vibrant street scape. You miss the point again El Greco as usual.

Indeed. Newcastle looks great! But where are all the shops, cafés, restaurants etc?

Unfortunately the city centre is dominated by an enormous shopping centre, containing lots of malls (Eldon Square), and this is where most shops are. However there are some main shopping streets, Northumberland Street (Below), Grainger Street (Previous), Newgate Street (Contains The Gate, which is a 'leisure mall' containing restaurants/bars/casino/cinema; Below), Blackett Street (Below) and Clayton Street (Below). Then of course through the rest of the city centre shops and restaurants are scattered throughout. Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

Newcastle is indeed lovely- though i wasn't so keen on Eldon Mall- it felt a bit cramped. Really hate the tall buildings in your pictures though, really despise Liberty Hall and O'Connell Bridge House. Oh, and the traffic and not to forget the hideous loopline bridge:puke:.
Dublin's fault, not the pictures!

Really hope they're knocked at some point... Dublin could learn so much from the regeneration and pride seen in UK cities. It's so sad to see it such a mess in parts...

The pics of Cardiff and Newcastle look great. Seems to be a really great sense of continuity in the regeneration of Cardiff!

Clean, well preserved buildings, good for tourists, clean and modern paving, cool new architecture, plenty of cultural venues like the O2 and the ultra modern new theatre, interesting and unique 100m high sculptures :P, Foster and Hadid proposed towers- along with a few more 100m+, multiple Calatrava bridges, the Luas trams, the underground port tunnel, getting major companies like Google to set up their European base in the city, T2 at the airport, the underground rail network, which should start soon... then you travel a few miles up to Belfast... oh dear.

I don't know Connor. It def lags behind in preserving streetscapes, and is pretty gritty in parts(not so much litter, but dirty buildings and bloody cars everywhere.) It's a medieval city for god's sake, it's not suitable for cars in the heart of the city!

Sure, it has a great historical heritage, (my own photos focus on that) but it's very much an unloved and uncared for city.
Investment in the city is really hindered by rural resentment, and the fact nearly everyone in the country outside Dublin hates the place!
Don't want to sound snobby, but the best example Dublin could take from other European cities is taking soical housing out of the its surrounding inner city!

Hopefully, an elected mayor and the underground will solve some these problems. However, I think it's a good dose of civic pride that's required to overcome most of the hurdles.

Don't be hard on Belfast, it certainly has more ambition than Dublin!

Cars can be a problem. Unfortunately were a car loving island though :( More people should use the public transport in Dublin ,I agree. It's not as if there isn't any to use lol Everywhere else in Ireland is just jealous of Dublin, perhaps because of the Dublin-centric mentality, where most important businesses and government facilities and infrastructure works are in the city, rather than spread equally. The suburbs can be iffy, but I've never really found the city centre in any way gritty. Very modern, leafy, and interesting though. :) Hopefully a mayor, as you mentioned will iron out the last problems.

I do love Belfast's sense of ambition, but the NIMBY's shite themselves at anything in anyway unique, or new such as the buildings going up in Dublin. I love my city, don't get me wrong. But Dublin is better in every way

I do love Belfast's sense of ambition, but the NIMBY's shite themselves at anything in anyway unique, or new such as the buildings going up in Dublin.

Not really, a prime example is the opposition to developments in places like Ballsbridge and the Tara Street development, indeed the fact that Belfast has Ireland's tallest buildings and will likely do so for years.

You give Dublin more credit than it's due at times.

Not sure I'd agree now. Not long ago I would have said it was similar to a UK city but it has adopted a much more European feel akin to one of the smaller European capitals like Amsterdam recently. I think it's because it now uses km/Euro, but also down to things like the paving and street furniture, as well as the trams of course. I think it's perhaps a vision of what the UK could be like in the future.

I have to say Newcastle is a very handsome town. The arches of the various bridges give the streetscene a great sense of drama. Very impressive.

The riverside area and those bridges are some of the most interesting streetscapes ive seen around the world. its the different layers, bridges cutting between buildings and the beauty of it all. The only negative side is there isnt much do to there, personally i would like to see more things for tourists (though there may be since i was there last).

Nice, but shopping malls are hardly street scape.

cardiff
February 2nd, 2010, 02:22 PM
I included them as they form major routes through the city and are efectively covered streets (thats up to you if you agree or not, but seeing as Cardiff has the largest undercover shopping area in the Uk it forms up alot of the center). Areas like the old arcades i would argue strongly that they are streetscape though.

Just spent some time looking at Leeds in Google Maps, and I have to say I find the city to be very underrated. Leeds seems to have a quite well preserved, impressive and dense Victorian city centre.
