Caiman September 7th, 2010, 10:03 PM Clutter indeed, but I think Liverpool looks gorgeous. What is that building in the first pic? Agreed love that first pic, love Liverpool's wide and sweeping avenues. El_Greco September 7th, 2010, 11:22 PM Exchange Flags, just behind the Town Hall, but yeah Liverpools great, infact Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh are imo the grandest cities in the UK. - http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4898599610_3e99133eb9_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4898604258_b90a8ce9ae_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/4898010801_278ace1c25_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/4898606980_6f084ec77d_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4898611906_7c8bc98db1_o.jpg yoshef September 8th, 2010, 12:24 AM Anyobe watched this? A great documentary on 18-19th century architecture in the North. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tnw4p/Peoples_Palaces_The_Golden_Age_of_Civic_Architecture_NeoClassical/ Quality show, next weeks show includes Westminster Palace, Manchester Town hall and Liverpool cathedral, amongst others. Already looking forward to it. Eugh so much clutter in those pictures.....:ohno: Talking of which another thing that gets on my nerves, although not as much as the clutter, is the awful gaudy plastic/neon shopfronts! Whats wrong with the old ones? Like many other things, they go out of fashion and business rip them out to make their shops look more modern. I too love seeing the old elegant shop frontages that blend in with the rest of the building, but unfortunately its the nature of business to not want to blend in, but stand out, and those loud colours tend to draw the eye. albionfagan September 8th, 2010, 02:01 AM Hudersfield is a horrible depressing place imo Is this all Leeds' forumers are capable of just slamming every place that isn't Leeds? Huddersfield actually has some fine Victorian architecture on display, walking out of the train station is actually quite lovely. Shame they have to be near a city full of ignorants. legolamb September 8th, 2010, 04:20 AM Shame Hull was overlooked in that documentary. The city was minted. Absolutely, filthy stinking rich. Bradford and Leeds were in the slow lane in every respect. Vulgar new money. Architecturally, culturally and intellectually Kingston-upon-Hull was well ahead until the second world war. It had been a sophisticated Northern European hanseatic trading port for centuries, and come the time of the industrial revolution it already had the medieval staithes and harbours of Bristol and York, the merchant houses of Hamburg, the neo-classical temples, academic institutions and Georgian New Town expansion of Edinburgh http://www.hullwebs.co.uk/content/k-victorian/city/albion%20street.pdf alongside the narrow, ornate facades of Antwerp. The civic bombast of the late Victorian/Edwardian era just provided a few large Florentine domes, towers and spectacular waterfront that led Bradshaw's Guide to describe it rising from the water like Venice. Yet on this documentary, the casual viewer would assume that since we had a clock tower on our old town hall, we were just trying to rip off Leeds  http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/johnsjc/OldTownHall.jpg?t=1276088366 Hull-born Cuthbert Broderick, who designed both buildings around the same time, was copying himself. And that doesn't count. Anyway it was eventually pulled down and replaced with the current guildhall, which is grander and about five times larger. El_Greco September 8th, 2010, 01:19 PM Yeah, Hull is always overlooked, which, I agree, is a shame. Maybe its to do with Hull being rather isolated? legolamb September 8th, 2010, 01:48 PM Yeah, maybe. Probably more to do with an inability by previous local administrations to understand, interpret and sell the city's rich heritage. There are signs that this might be changing, but it's going to take a long time for people in the rest of the country to get their head around the fact that Hull is far from what they often assume. legolamb September 8th, 2010, 01:57 PM An interesting run down of the main architectural treasures from Bulmers Gazeteer in 1892 (5 years before official city status) some now gone, but plenty still left. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Hull/HullHistory/HullHistory11.html What is especially interesting about that documentary is the way the presenter describes how Liverpool's glorious St Georges Hall complex started a movement of grand academic and cultural institutions in the North. Though there was nothing on that scale, Hull' self improvement was based around a similar philosophy. Instead of building giant commercial shopping arcades, Markets, Music Halls and Corn Exchanges (though they existed in abundance too) there was more of a focus on the towns principal civic architecture reflecting the arts, religion and the sciences. Paul D September 8th, 2010, 05:00 PM Superb documentary, thanks for posting that, when's the next one on,I'll have to watch that.Maybe the trolls can watch that when they're banging on about their great shops and restaurants and see a small example of what its really all about. They put me in mind of the sequences in 'Billy Liar' where Julie Christie, as the swinging, care-free young woman infused with the spirit of the sixties, waltzes through post-war Bradford. Would have been Leeds of course in the novel, but the film gives a great taste of sixties Bradford as its glowering Victorian buildings begin to hit the deck. JamesWales October 8th, 2010, 11:38 AM Yeah, really great photos there..They don't appear to all be the exact same era though..Some look right after the way, some almost 1960's. A pretty fascinating period for British cities though. I guess most of us are familier with the largely dissapointing post-war buildings, but for a long period people in the 1950's must have lived with many derelict bombed out sites before everything was developed. And I would kill to go to that Ham and Egg bar in photo 5 at the moment. Karldiff October 8th, 2010, 12:18 PM Delirium, they are amazing pictures. I'm going to gaze at them all day. Also photographs of the past tend to be of summer days when more people were out and about than average. legolamb October 9th, 2010, 04:39 PM Plus there were fewer shopping centres, no out-of town retail parks and a lack of pedestrianisation means that photos naturally look busier due to more traffic alongside crowds of shoppers squeezing onto narrow pavements. Also, If you think British cities are poor for retaining footfall outside of working hours and weekends now, I guarantee that they were even more quiet and shuttered down back then. djfusion777 October 10th, 2010, 03:20 PM Love those Bristol photos. The thing about Leeds is that most of center is full of fine architecture, it's just silly things like paving are atrocious making the overall street-scape very poor. Have the address of it, so I can visit it when I come to Glasgow? As for Art-Nouveau, the architecture historians say that the style was born in 1890s (Art-Deco even later), but this building clearly shows that the origins of both styles go much deeper (some even say that they go as deep as Wren!). Theres another building of similar style on the same street, possibly by the same architect. Art Nouveau is my favourite style, its a shame it wasn't as widespread in Britain as mainland Europe. I'd recommend the Hatrack building on St Vincent Street it's a real gem. If you want full access to most of Glasgow's buildings then the best time to visit is Door's Open Day in September. Yes, tenement stairways tend to have Art Nouveau tiles and Stained Glass windows, depending on the age of the building and the social class it was intended for. According to Wikipedia.... Hamilton Square in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England is a town square surrounded by Georgian terraces. No two sides of the square are identical. It was built beginning in 1826 and to the design of Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham. It is second only to Trafalgar Square in London for having the most Grade I listed buildings in one place in England. The land on which the square was developed was purchased in 1824 by Scottish shipbuilder William Laird (1780-1841). He commissioned Gillespie Graham, a leading Edinburgh architect, to lay out a square and surrounding streets, in a similar style to Edinburgh New Town. Gillespie Graham envisaged vistas of long, straight and wide avenues lined by elegant houses. Hamilton Square, named after Laird’s wife’s family, was built piecemeal over the next twenty years as the focus of the regular street layout. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4419969796_3f888cc0c5_b.jpg Copyright Tom McEvoy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tmcevoy/) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2511/3965051911_900e7e46f2_o.jpg Copyright Ministry (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ministry/) http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/668/p1010811.jpg Copyright Doug Roberts http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/4254/p1010810u.jpg Copyright Doug Roberts http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4897783265_786da6e1e1_b.jpg Copyright Alf Plant 2009 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/44851122@N06/) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4652758238_9cd4262554_b.jpg Copyright Peter-Smith (http://www.flickr.com/photos/41302931@N03/) A few more smaller shots copyright Allerton Oak (http://www.allertonoak.com/index.html) http://www.allertonoak.com/images/BC09HamiltonSquareHamiltonSt.jpg http://www.allertonoak.com/images/BC09HamiltonSquareArgyleSt.jpg http://www.allertonoak.com/images/BC09HamiltonSquareMonument.jpg http://www.allertonoak.com/images/BC09HamiltonSquareMemorial.jpg Paul D January 3rd, 2011, 04:59 PM I love the way you just see the Metropolitan Cathedral framed between the monument and the building, fantastic photography. legolamb January 14th, 2011, 07:54 PM Hamilton Square looks spectacular. Also the street furniture isnt the same down the full length of the street, at a particular junction (where taxis gain access) it changes into the more modern furniture found in the Hayes. it does define a definate 'castle quarter' but most feel it would have been better to have a unified street. Also the large planters have palm trees which while nice dont really fit in with the area, or whats been planted in the large planters elswhere in the city. Its as iff they started off with a great vision but are now diluting it to the point of making a home goal. JamesWales April 25th, 2011, 10:51 PM The street is immeasurably better than it was, and generally very positive, but the sheer number of bollards is just insane and totally odd. They seem to serve no purpose whatsoever. 10123 April 26th, 2011, 12:03 AM Yes I suppose there are a bit too many bollards. The palm-tree type plants don't really go with the old-fashioned style furniture, although I do like them, maybe further down where the more modern furniture is. The only reason I could think of the council changing the style is because of costs. I would of thought the more traditional style costs more than the typical, minimalistic, modern affair. And if you think thats messy you should see the old streets in Leeds before they were modernized, a total mess. http://www.ukuug.org/events/linux2004/leeds/Albion_Place_big.jpg None the less though- collectively it is still a very impressive street (Cardiff), the quality is evident and shows Cardiff means business. Its similar to the new furniture in Leeds. While no where near the sheer amount, they've gone for some rather strange looking seats. http://www.leedsarchitectureawards.co.uk/images/albion.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4022/4707195398_0a88a2dae2.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/atoach/4707195398/) Albion Place (http://www.flickr.com/photos/atoach/4707195398/) by Tim Green aka atoach (http://www.flickr.com/people/atoach/), on Flickr Aaronj09 April 26th, 2011, 12:16 AM I can't believe the streets of Leeds looked like that not so long ago! From batman-news.com: http://cdn.batman-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TDKRGlasgowScotland.jpg Caped crusader to film in Glasgow Glasgow is to be transformed into Gotham City in the latest Batman film sequel. Dark Knight Rises, which sees Christian Bale return as the caped crusader, will be filmed in the city, with Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine among the cast. Director Christopher Nolan will use shots filmed around Glasgow in some of exterior scenes in the final instalment of his Batman trilogy. Shooting has already begun in London and Croydon and will head north for several scenes early next month. Nolan, who previously used Chicago to depict Gotham, wanted to use several different locations to create a Gotham nobody would recognise. A source revealed: "He plans to use various cities to provide a mash-up of what Gotham will look like. "Glasgow was location-scouted for the last film Dark Knight, though in the end it wasn't used. This time, Chris already has several scenes in mind. "The city centre architecture is hugely impressive. But he will be filming in secret. "That said, if you see a man in body armour driving a big Batmobile down Sauchiehall Street, it's Batman." After doubling as New York in The Wire, and Chicago's approach for sister-city status, Glasgow is gaining pleasing recognition for its imposing 'downtown' architecture. last 2 1/2 hours trying to clean a better floor that one in the last photograph, in my house. :P Required June 13th, 2011, 08:43 PM  It does look conspicuously clean doesn't it JamesWales June 13th, 2011, 09:10 PM I'm fond of Manchester. Rarely beautiful but a nice urban form and some good, solid urban buildings. One criticism is that it doesn't seem very green at all. I noticed only one small green space in the city centre. Great city though. Required June 13th, 2011, 09:39 PM ^^ I agree. I can't think of anywhere in the city centre where there's room for a park though. chase_me June 14th, 2011, 12:43 AM what about that (NPC?) carpark behind the palace hotel? you get to it off charles street...i see the car park every day on the train to oxford road and get anoyed cos i think its make a great park...and while we're on NPCs i always thought the one in china town could make a nice oriental style garden maybe? cos there is another NPC just down the road in city tower/behind it Required June 14th, 2011, 03:53 PM what about that (NPC?) carpark behind the palace hotel? you get to it off charles street... That would look great as a park with the tall buildings surrounding it. Perhaps a bit too tucked away though :dunno: Required June 14th, 2011, 03:56 PM More Manchester streetscapes http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5301/5793514680_fb6a30f377_b.jpg http://m1.ikiwq.com/img/xl/peXCIp2IJ0r7dcwG89Ybtb.jpg http://www.yourlocalweb.co.uk/images/pictures/12/88/liverpool-road-castlefield-manchester-126625.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5163/5239142797_a5f329cc24_o.jpg http://www.obiproperty.co.uk/files/3hardman_610.jpg chase_me June 14th, 2011, 05:09 PM That would look great as a park with the tall buildings surrounding it. Perhaps a bit too tucked away though :dunno: perhaps...maybe a a pedestrian bridge to link it to whitworth street...but its be a nice addition - kinda secluded, though i can see many might not wanna be there at night/when it gets darker Required June 14th, 2011, 11:26 PM Yeah, my only issue would be the seclusion.
