oscar9 June 15th, 2011, 11:16 PM Had a good idea where they were, I visit Manchester a few times a year , just the second pic reminds me of Belgium or somewhere
I love those pics of the Northern Qtr where the New York backstreet scenes are simulated , the whole area is full interesting shops and stuff , a bit gritty round the edges though

Glasgow is star attraction in Brad Pitt blockbuster
18 Jun 2011
IT will be a dramatic tale of zombies, war and heroes – and this £80 million film will bring not only millions of pounds to the Glasgow economy, but one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Last night it was confirmed Brad Pitt will be filming his new blockbuster movie World War Z in the city for two weeks in August. The film, based on the 2006 book by Max Brooks, will see Pitt play the central role of a fictional Brooks, who is piecing together what happened during a calamitous outbreak of zombie attacks, set in the near future.
The film’s producers will also shoot scenes in Hungary and Malta. It is believed Glasgow’s city centre, especially George Square and St Vincent Street, will stand in for Philadelphia and include at least one major battle scene. Made by Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment company and Paramount, the film’s script is said to move away from the more luridly violent tradition of zombie movies, and is being compared to more serious action films such as Children of Men and The Bourne Identity.
One online film site said its solemn script could even put the serious take on the traditionally gory genre of zombie movies in the running for Academy Award contention. It has been written by J Michael Straczynski and will be directed by Marc Forster, who also directed The Kite Runner and Quantum of Solace.
The appearance of Pitt, joined by co-stars Mireille Enos and Ed Harris, will spark intense media interest in the actor’s presence in Scotland, where he could be joined by his partner, Angelina Jolie. The production will involve almost 1200 people on location in Glasgow during the second half of August, and the impact on the local economy is likely to be more than £2m, the city’s council said yesterday. It is understood filming will necessitate road closures and traffic diversions.
Glasgow Film Office has been working with the movie’s producers for the past month to help secure locations in the city, and to ensure arrangements are in place with council departments.
The locations department of Creative Scotland has also been involved. Residents and businesses in areas where filming will take place – Cochrane Street, George Square and other city centre locations – have already been consulted.
Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “I am delighted to see this massive production coming to Glasgow, and look forward to welcoming everyone involved in the film to the city. Our distinctive Victorian architecture has proven a vital attraction to many location managers over the years.
“The film and broadcast industry has contributed more than £150m to the city’s economy over the past decade, and the Glasgow Film Office has played a key role in attracting major productions The news that such a major film is locating in Glasgow will hopefully attract productions of a similar size to the city.”
Michael Harm, the location manager for World War Z, said: “The production team spent many months looking for the perfect city centre location to play an important part in the film. Glasgow’s architecture, wide roads and grid layout proved the ideal setting for Marc Forster...

indiekid June 23rd, 2011, 05:56 PM A time when every major city in the UK was as important as London. Did many bombs fall over Glasgow city centre in WWII?
Cheers! Luckily the city centre was located away from the heavy industry areas, so it escaped most of the bombing.
From what I know:
-One bomb destroyed a building at Royal Exchange Square and badly damaged its neighbour (which was then demolished in the 1960s due to structural concerns).
-One bomb damaged the Kelvingrove Museum and the Kelvin Way Bridge. The statues of "Peace" and "War" were ironically blasted into the river until they were restored after the War. In the 1990s a man reportedly found the hand of "War" in the riverbed.
-During the same bombing, the subway tunnel was ruptured and various tenements were destroyed.
-The biggest loss was Alexander Thompson's Queens Park Church: http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/images/l/766093/
Conor June 23rd, 2011, 06:08 PM Pity about the church, but at least most stuff was maintained.

cardiff June 26th, 2011, 08:45 PM It was a bakery, very few industrial buildings in Cardiff due to the industry, but the ones that are left have all been done up (maybe except 2 near callaghan square), this building is now apartments.

JamesWales June 28th, 2011, 12:18 AM Oh, it's partly the novotel then? it doesn't look so distinctive from the front.
DaiB June 28th, 2011, 12:34 AM No, Novotel is a bit further up. Spillers and Bakers is very much a standalone building. It's not a bakery BTW, I think it was a flour mill though.
cardiff June 28th, 2011, 09:35 AM DaiB is correct spillers is a stand alone building, i think your are right in it having been a flour mill as well. Here is another angle on it

This is the Novotel, it has a modern section attached to it, the modern section is ok, but the connection between them is of quite a high standard IMO.

ill tonkso July 5th, 2011, 01:56 AM You really get a sense of the scale of central Glasgow in those streetview shots. Impressive stuff!
Also, I don't know what the hell those giant brown curved spike things are in Belfast, but I approve.
Required July 5th, 2011, 03:25 AM Glasgow's grid layout is a masterstroke. I love that sense of an overriding structure. London has the most amazing buildings, but i wish they were laid out better, not on higgledy-piggledy streets.
cardiff July 5th, 2011, 12:37 PM Personally i preffer the non grid layout, IMO it lets you apreciate buildings more as the grandest often ocupy prime positions at the end of streets or junctions. Grid layout tend to merge buildigns into one humogenous mass in my eyes. The most photographed buildings I see of Glasgow are ones that dont conform to the grid layout (hence probably why streetview had to be used to get those picture of the beautiful architecture). I also love the exploritory nature of higledy pigledy streets, though im sure there are plnty who like grid layouts.
Something completely different, Penarth to the west of Cardiff bay

Sweet Zombie Jesus July 5th, 2011, 12:55 PM The Glasgow grid isn't as strict as an American grid though... in many places the grid changes to accommodate the railway stations and older areas, and squares are planned with large public buildings (usually churches) to terminate the vista. Royal Exchange Square, St. Enoch Square and Nelson Mandela Place spring to mind. Changes in road direction and elevation of land also contribute to a 'sense of place' rather than a giant endless, sprawling grid.
That said, it's all down to preference, and I can see the advantages of an organic layout as well, particularly the feeling of intimacy and history that Cardiff manages well while still keeping an urban feel about it.
Karldiff July 5th, 2011, 01:12 PM Grid systems make for a much more urban feel in my opinion, especially when the buildings are on a similar scale to those in Glasgow. Its a matter of personal taste as to whether thats more preferable than the more eclectic approach. Its often said that Cardiff feels like a big town rather than a city and I would have to agree to a certain extent. I think quite a bit of that is down to the lack of a grid system.
Personally I would have liked to have seen the redevelopment of Cardiff Bay set out on a grid system. It would have made it a lot more coherent and 'hidden' some of the more mediocre buildings.
Required July 5th, 2011, 01:38 PM I think higgledy-piggledy streets work best when they are the exception and not the rule, for example Broadway in New York:

belfastuniguy July 5th, 2011, 08:49 PM Also, I don't know what the hell those giant brown curved spike things are in Belfast, but I approve.
They are fantastic!! They are copper masts that will eventually change to match the colour of the copper dome of City Hall and surrounding buildings.
They are named after famous ships build in Belfast by Harland and Wolff and just need to have their graphics added and they'll be complete. Each mast will have a banner, which will celebrate Northern Ireland’s industrial maritime heritage and commemorate one of the great White Star Line ships build in Belfast by Harland and Wolff.
There are 8 of them and are as follows in order from start of Donegal Place from City Hall;
Titanic
Olympic
Oceanic
Britannic
Laurentic
Celtic
Nomadic

cardiff July 11th, 2011, 10:56 PM Ive always liked it, its covered in detil as well.
JamesWales July 11th, 2011, 11:16 PM I can honestly say I've never looked up at it.
The junction it sits on is a pig, both for pedestrians and for cars. Narrow pavements, bad crossings etc and it doesn't encourage you to look up, at both this building and the one opposite which is crying out for renovation. Hilton are supposedly opening a hotel on adjacent land, which is all part of the same development, so hopefully something will happen.
There is some truly wonderful old buildings in Cardiff Bay, and some pretty interesting new ones. The fall down is that they don't currently blend together well.

Boards July 11th, 2011, 11:59 PM Great stuff there. Cardiff looks better everytime you guys post. I actually have family there. I'm always invited down. I'm going to get my cousins to give me the tour soon. I can imagine just kicking back on a hot sunny day down by the bay. I'd also like to tour the hills in winter.
JamesWales July 12th, 2011, 12:09 AM Yes, the Bay is really lovely on a nice summers evening, with a great atmosphere.
I love the city. What I'd say though is that the nice buildings in the Bay are somewhat neglected and not intertwined in with the newer developments. It will happen, but it's slow, slow, slow. The Bay is expanding all the time though, and the new BBC studios should make a big difference. It really could do with one or two more very large employers though.
The newer part of the Bay has nice views, bars, restaurants etc, and some interesting and at times very good modern archicture, but, well, lets say no one goes to Mermaid Quay to take photos of the buildings.

Oh yeah, Mermaid Quay is good fun and people enjoy themselves there, but it isn't beautiful or architecturally as interesting as other parts of the Bay.
I'm not an urban design snob though. There are certain urban designers who can't see the wood for the trees, and because the place doesn't conform to many conventions they are convinced it's bad and overlook the positives-ie, people enjoy going there.
If I had a magic wand, I'd move Coffee Mania though, and create a nice square there.
Karldiff July 12th, 2011, 03:50 PM Once you are in its midst Mermaid Quay (terrible name) is very buzzy and a great place to be. Architecturally its mediocre which wouldn't really matter except it's facing the waterfront. Its a shame the Powell Dyffryn HQ that stood on the opposite side of the Oval Basin from the Pierhead building burnt down. It would have created an impressive waterfront.
Mermaid Quay is a bit too busy as a design for my liking and too lowrise. When viewed from the Barrage its pretty weak. It also turns its back on the older - more interesting - part of the Bay which is probably by design as the developer wants people to stay there.
I'd like to see the car park removed as well as the crappy flats on James St so that there are two through routes directly to Mount Stuart Square. I can't see that happening for a while though.
It sort of sums up Cardiff Bay for me. A series of area's that don't seem to have any relationship with other area's. Its not particularly coherent or legible although I sense that changing slowly. Its not suprising though - the whole Bay has been created out of nothing and has been subject to the whims of private developers whose interests haven't always coincided with best practice in urban planning.
Its probably worth reminding ourselves that Cardiff as a port was predominantly coal out and timber in. It didn't have the warehouses that you see in Liverpool in any great quantities. You just bring coal in by train, dump it on the dockside and then ship it out. People criticise much of the Bay development because they assume that great swathes of old and interesting buildings were demolished to make way for whats there now which isn't the case. Also much of the waterways such as the Glamorgan Canal, Bute West Dock, Oval Basin, Junction Canal that would have made the place more interesting were filled in in the 1950's, decades before the Bay was a twinkle in a town planners eye.
JamesWales July 12th, 2011, 05:25 PM Very true. The Docks had some nice historical offices and commercial buildings, but very few warehouses. A huge chunk of it was open space for coal trucks to pull into.
http://www.bilderberg.org/cardiff.jpg
http://www.urban75.org/photos/wales/images/cardiff-docks-01.jpg
Worth noting as well that Cardiff Docks are still operational, just a stones throw away from the bars and restaurants, and I believe it recently had it's busiest year for several decades. The new BBC studios back directly on to operational port land.

belfastuniguy July 20th, 2011, 11:02 PM I love Edinburgh! Some very nice pics there.
Pennypacker July 20th, 2011, 11:19 PM I think that last shot of Edinburgh really illustrates how ugly and cluttered the streetscapes in this country have become. On the continent that would be a grand tree lined boulevard that the buildings surrounding it deserve, and I'm sure if you found a picture from the same spot a century ago it would look much more attractive than it does now.
The uneven and asymmetric street markings are the main culprit, as well as the random traffic islands which cause misshapen roads. Sort those out and plant some trees and you'd have a world class boulevard.

Have you been to Edinburgh or Princes Street?
In addition, that photo has been taken during tram construction.

Yeah, but it was a good few years ago. Apologies if the public realm has been considerably improved since then but I doubt it.
I was aware of the construction as well and that is not what I was referring when I said "ugly" and "cluttered", believe it or not. Traffic islands, railings, and ugly street markings are the main culprits, as I said.

Suburban Knight July 21st, 2011, 04:34 PM Admittedly a few shots of heritage areas in Dublin aren't going to show much clutter anyway - is this the same for ALL of Dublin?
Conor July 21st, 2011, 05:21 PM Temple Bar district doesn't need all that street clutter because it is pedestrianised. I can assure you that parts of Dublin are just as bad as the UK. Only difference is that the street clutter is shinier. I also agree that street clutter is the main aesthetic problem in cites, towns and villages throughout the UK and Ireland. It's amazing what some trees, good paving and minimal/modern street furniture can do.

Dublin (and Irish) streets pretty much look exactly like British ones to be honest. Those pictures only show the pedestrianised tourist areas of the city and you can find equivalents in many British cities, especially in the West End of London. But on the whole, the quality of the majority of the streetscapes still fall behind those on the continent.
Event the most recent of pedestrianisation in Cardiff resulted in unecessary street clutter, im almost positive it must be to due to the excessive laws in this country, eg this street is pedestrianised and only occasionally open to traffic, so why the bollards!!!!????

I don't even think this is actually that bad. Yes it has all that I would usually describe as clutter, and yes it does look better without but at least it's neat and set out in an orderly fashion, which isn't always the case for main thoroughfares in British cities.
JamesWales July 21st, 2011, 08:52 PM St Mary street is a bit cluttered, but I'm increasingly fond of it.
I'm not as obsessed with clutter as some, but I agree that where it is not necessary it should be removed. It's important to keep a pragmatic eye on things though.
In regards to St Mary Street, Cardiff, my understanding is that the basements extend out some distance beneath the pavement, and are not strong enough to support prolonged vehicle parking during delivery times. It may be using a hammer to crack a nut, but it's worth considering the practicalities behind much street furniture. Without the bollards in the above picture, it's possible that landlords would have opposed the pedestrianisation en masse. It's all very well doing the street up, but if a couple of years down the line some hefty delivery lorry falls through into the basement, thats no good for anyone.

Blah blah blah, continent this continent that, that's all us Brits seem to talk aobut nowadays!. I would rather the UK not be like the continent, bland, samey-samey cities all looking alike. I'm glad our cities are different, and as pointed out before Princes Street isn't the most grand street in Edinburgh, go to the Royal Mile if you want to see a clutter-free street.
belfastuniguy July 21st, 2011, 10:13 PM UK cities should take a leaf out of Dublin's book and eliminate unnecessary clutter
You having a laugh?? Dublin's street are just as full of useless street furniture and clutter than any other British city. Dublin also has a serious problem with keeping its streets clean and tidy, the place is a bloody mess most of the time with a ridiculously low level of civic pride.
Any Irish forumer will tell you the exact same thing! Dublin is by no means an example by which others should be judged.
JamesWales July 21st, 2011, 11:44 PM the continent definately isn't an homogenous blob. Lots of good and bad from Seville to Helsinki and everything inbetween.

belfastuniguy July 22nd, 2011, 12:13 AM Yeah I see it on a regular basis, not just the Temple Bar area, Dublin is a VERY poorly kept city, with plenty of clutter.
Leeds No.1 July 22nd, 2011, 01:50 AM I'd agree, Dublin is poorly kept. There are the recently regenerated areas like O'Connell Street, but a lot of the city is still waiting for its investment. Head towards the Castle and Guinness Storehouse and it's rather run down, as are areas around Smithfield.

It doesn't look like any of them. There is as much variety within the continent as there is between the rest of Europe and the UK. btw, Paris has probably the highest concentration of unique and cutting edge modern Architecture in Europe, behind London, Madrid and Barcelona imo. Conor August 4th, 2011, 11:35 PM Belfast's a great city. I like how bright and open it feels, thanks to them wide straight avenues. My only criticism would be the lack of quality modern architecture, the same criticism I have of most cities in the Uk and ireland.

oscar9 August 7th, 2011, 05:19 PM beautiful architecture but in desperate need of wider pavements, greenery of some kind and resurfacing the roads.
I have noticed too the road surfaces in Manchester are a bit dodgy
Some parts of central Manchester do have a mini New York feel, no one will convince me otherwise , even more so when there for real

Hence why films such as Captain America have been filmed there.

JamesWales August 24th, 2011, 04:42 PM I'm not necessarily predisposed to naming areas for marketing purposes, but the area around Cardiff University and the Royal Welsh College of wotsits really deserves some kind of 'quarter' treatment to help define it. It's more than just the civic centre, more than an extension of the city centre, and most certainly is distinct from the neighbourhood of Cathays, which it is formally a part of.
We really aren't very good at marketing in Cardiff in my opinion.
cardiff August 24th, 2011, 06:41 PM Once the pedestrianisation has finnished on St Marys street, the next phase was development around the civic center. Not sure if this is still going ahead due to the financial situation, but if so i beleive this will be addressed then. Hopefully this will involve more than just new paving etc and will be opening up the streets around it more, connecting it to its surroundings more and have proper prvisions for the events that take place there (ie big weekend, canelig, winter wonderland) and maybe even incorporate development of the police HQ into another museum. It could be an exciting time for the area or maybe a hugely missed oportunity. There are more pics around the civic center in my photo thread

JamesWales September 6th, 2011, 10:21 AM Blimey, no city comes close to Edinburgh does it? Lovely.
Sweet Zombie Jesus September 6th, 2011, 01:49 PM Had never even heard of that place before!
VoldemortBlack September 6th, 2011, 04:51 PM King Street in Manchester is one of my favourite streetscenes in the city;
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/King_Street_3.jpg
wiggleyleeds September 6th, 2011, 06:18 PM It's ironic you say its you're favourite in manchester, as its a very town like street (despite your love of uber-urban), that is closer to the shopping core experience found in places like leeds and nottingham. Human scale streets are not to be sniffed at.
Although that said, King street does feel like the small side street in leeds called King Edward street.

Of course, more dense/urban streets can look nicer too (like the pic below, round the corner from king edward street), although I prefer the more human scale streets for shopping

oscar9 September 6th, 2011, 07:51 PM I think vold was referring to the side of King St where the big banks are located, very grand big city buildings, the side which you posted is the part where the shops are and it feels more intimate, you are correct it does feel more like Leeds or Nottingham in that part.

Neither did I! But it seems Edinburgh is full of hidden surprises.
Next up, some of the repaved streets in Glasgow's Merchant City. What a difference, if only George Square got this sort of treatment!

Agreed the top end where the banks are doesn't feel as small as the retail end, and is much more similar in height and bulk to the respective financial streets in leeds.

The back of Moorfields is a car park isn't it?
albionfagan September 11th, 2011, 02:09 PM And what a car park, in one single ticket machine there was more interesting architecture than the wholeof Leeds.

10123 September 12th, 2011, 09:29 PM Anyway you've posted this before, how about some snaps of the streets from yourself.
Pretty please.
I'll try get some on Saturday, street view gives me some good angles/location for photos.
yoshef September 12th, 2011, 11:51 PM Nice! How many different streets are in that photoset?
wiggleyleeds September 13th, 2011, 12:58 AM a quick count about 35, they were primarily the streets I use / have walked down
10123 September 13th, 2011, 12:59 AM What Wiggley has posted appears to be a large chunk of the centre.
If I can find time I will try and create an album of every street in Leeds centre. It won't be fancy like just a quick shot at a nice angle.
yoshef September 13th, 2011, 01:05 AM I kept seeing the same building in multiple shots... thought you might be cheating a bit, but I'll let you off.
wiggleyleeds September 13th, 2011, 01:18 AM ^^
the pictures are focussing on buildings rather than streets so many of the pics will be focussing on buildings or street corners of the same street. Although a quick count showed about 35 completely different streets

Who are the architects? Is any of it housing cooperative?
crusty_bint September 14th, 2011, 12:52 AM a number of architects are involved in the implementation of the Gorbals and Laurieston masterplans, Hypostyle, Elder & Cannnon, Page & Park, CZWG to name a few. good article here (http://www.ads.org.uk/scottisharchitecture/highlights/a-photographic-journey-through-the-new-gorbals). the redevelopment is a public/private partnership so there is a good mix of tenure with privately owned, and housing associations (i suppose the equivalent of your co-oop) providing rental and shared equity :)
di Livio September 14th, 2011, 12:09 PM Leeds should be nowhere near this list, a small, ugly and uninteresting city.

Aye.
I agree.
Somewhere between Reading and Lille.
I've said it before. It's very similar to Luxembourg (which to be fair is a city, but a very odd one).
albionfagan September 15th, 2011, 11:39 AM Small, ugly and uninteresting?
Crap photo.
Small, 5'9..I'll give you, uninteresting? Why you stalking me around the internet then?
Ugly.

Damn site prettier than your shithole town my friend.
albionfagan September 15th, 2011, 11:41 AM I have to say I'm a little perturbed by some of the goings on on the Leeds forum, I think some questions need to be asked of moderators.
There seems to be an obsession with me, and evidently stalking. Odd and a bit worrying.
Seeing as I can't PM you, care to explain what's going on Di Livio?
wiggleyleeds September 15th, 2011, 12:03 PM Jesus,
Those two photos of alnionfagon explain why he's always so angst ridden, upset, and a general twat
As for obsession, the obsession seems to be your continual trolling and purposely being a complete cunt in threads for the sole purpose of being a cunt. You're the only one who does this irh such continuity and a LOT of forrumers are sick of it and have expressed this. People have been suspended for a lot less. With your continual derailing of threads and disruptivness, and a sufficient catalogue of evidence of disruptivness, it may be the time soon for users of the city talk thread to collectively inform admin and see if something can be done.
And btw, thanks for derailing this thread like every other.

Stop crying, I've done nothing at all wrong, I offer simple crticism of Leeds and then I find there's a gang of Leeds forumers stalking, discussing my personal details on an internet forum. It's fucking scary and I'll be reporting you and everyone else who's been involved in it, I know you can't take anyone criticsing Leeds but this is seriously out of line. I've made no personal comments about anyone.
I think you'll find it was Di Livio who derailed it, craving attention and posting something completely irrelevant to the discussion. It's embarrassing that grown men behave like this, but what can I expect? Looks like all my thoughts about Leeds and people from Leeds are correct.
wiggleyleeds September 15th, 2011, 12:27 PM There's a huge difference between constructive discussion and being a complete arsehole making comments continually in every thread on every page with the sole reason of being provocative and derailing a thread. Stick to the city bash thread if you need to be a dick.
Moreover a lot of your posts involve very personal unnecessary attacks and attacks on their picture, yet the moment people are beginning to collectively have enough of your disruptivness and a pic you've put on forum is displayed, you cry moderator, even though it represents just 1% of the way you act and your behaviour every day.
There's never been anyone on here who has so openly derailed so many threads, been so personally offensive to people, and who a lot of people are just sick of. It really is getting to that time where a lot of us collectively will need to contact admin to get you to stop your disruption. So many over the years who have been a lot less disruptive have been indefinitely suspended.

You don't think it's a bit eerie? Sure, have problems with what I post, what I say but I've never once personally attacked any of the Leeds forumers. It's very odd and weird, I'm wondering what else these people have gotten hold of, bank details perhaps?
You just don't like the fact I dislike the city you live in, get over it and stop whining and acting like a nutty stalker. I've tried to stick to the topic here but it's been brought down by others with a very disconcerting obsession.
I asked why Leeds is so ugly, what is offensive about that? Stop being an insecure, immature little bitch and rebuke me with considered responses or don't bother at all.
wiggleyleeds September 15th, 2011, 12:52 PM Funny that, you've personally attacked me completely unprovoked loads of times, brining my picture up, and writing paragraphs about it. It's a little ironic you now get upset when people are acting only 1%of the way you are daily.
You can dislike any city you want. There's a huge difference between taking umbrance with certain aspects of a city in a sympathetic way, and blindly bulldozing a thread saying somewhere is the shitter place on earth and the most ugly nasty place. It's just being a cunt for the sake of being a cunt to provoke a reaction and derail a thread, like a spoilt child wanting attention.
And incidently your comments were rebuked with we reasoned discussion with good etiquette, rather than screaming in every thread about how you think a certain city is so disgustingly ugly like a childish insecure internet-warrior football neanderthal making pathetic outbursts to get a reaction. You really are on the wrong site.

When was the last time I made comments like that? I admit, in the past, my posting style was perhaps a little overzealous and antagonistic but I don't do that any more. My post in this thread was purely about the aesthetics of Leeds, ok I could have put it better but Leeds isn't a person, you shouldn't take it personally.
Meh, live and let live. If you lot want to discuss me and follow me that's up to you.

I'm not so keen on that example to be honest, but I have seen some good examples around the country. Unfortunately I feel developers that are trying to break out of the mould are seen as 'quirky' as opposed to the standard; still defined by Barratt-esque estates.

cardiff September 15th, 2011, 05:09 PM Goodbye bandwidth!
crusty_bint September 15th, 2011, 05:23 PM aw, don't you like my streetscapes? ;)
perhaps if the thread wasn't clogged up by whining and bitching i wouldn't feel compelled to post pics in quick succession.
yoshef September 15th, 2011, 05:48 PM Just like in Liverpool, hidden gems boarded up and left to rot. meh!

crusty_bint September 15th, 2011, 05:57 PM almost! this former church was converted to a business centre about 10/15 years ago along with the adjoining former school. sadly the business centre is entered from the school at the rear rather than the church fronting Duke St* :(

Karldiff September 16th, 2011, 10:07 AM I'm surprised no-one has commented on those Glasgow streetscapes. Absolutely superb. The new stuff in the Gorbals also pisses over the faux Georgian Barrats muck that seems to get thrown up everywhere else.
I'm no expert on Scotland but it seems to me that there is quite an architectural heritage there (well at least in its major cities). On another thread someone posted a link to a website listing the best modern buildings in the UK (and beyond) over the last 10 years or so and it seemed to me on a cursory glance that Scotland was over represented on there.

Agree with that. Sometimes I think that the way the country is run, there are two cities Scotland and one in England.

One thing I've noticed while in Glasgow before is that there is some great architecture, but it is often not respected. I'm not talking in the City here, but in the inner city and inner suburbs. Head out along Great Western Road and there are fantastic buildings if you look up, but at street level you wouldn't know with horrible signs plastering every space. I know this is true in most towns and cities; Betfred is the worst offender, but it's a shame in Glasgow because the architecture is of such a high quality.
It would be promising to see Glasgow move towards having a strategy surrounding the streetscape to regulate signage. The crazy thing is that it would probably cost less to do good signage because you don't have to pay for loads of panelling or massive banner signs!

Karldiff September 16th, 2011, 03:08 PM I think thats true of almost all British cities. Plenty of examples in Cardiff where the original ornate stonework has been hacked away to put up over sized, gaudy plastic signs that crucify buildings at street level. Fair play there have also been a couple of examples where buildings have actually been restored to something approaching their original, elegant state by the unlikliest of candidates such as Costa Coffee, Prezzo and even Greggs!

Head out along Great Western Road and there are fantastic buildings if you look up, but at street level you wouldn't know with horrible signs plastering every space. Disingenuous, to say the least, to post and image of a Starbucks in, presumably the centre of, York, and a one-man-band sandwich shop in the residential, formerly heavily industrial, suburb of Possil. That said, you do have a point. However, planning guidelines can only recommend a vague range of proportions and materials for use in shop fronts and signage, and ultimately the choices a shop-owner makes will be down to their own taste and budget. You simply can't stymie private enterprise on the basis of aesthetics alone, and without grant assistance toward the cost of shop-fronts and signage, all planning can ever do is suggest and recommend. That said, you can regulate more thoroughly within Conservation Areas where grant assistance can be made available toward the cost of specific aspects, and that is something being done in the likes of Parkhead in the East End.
take Roots & Fruits (on Great Western Rd) for example, traditional stylee working with the existing elements of the shopfront and only introducing a very limited palette of signage, materials and colour. Ticks my boxes, aesthetically, particularly with the awnings down.

compare that to this one in Shawlands (on the southside), it again works with the existing elements of the original shopfront and again only introducing a very limited palette of signage, materials and colour, according to their budget. Ticks all the planning boxes but falls down on aesthetics. This isnt something planning law can dictate as its wholly subjective - the shopowner is probably quite happy with their product.

now take this shopfront in Dennistoun (east end), its in a new build (10years) and has all the elements of the traditional shopfront, right down to the panelling and awnings, but for me it just doesn't work.

So, whilst I agree with you, I doubt you could find an example anywhere in the world of a city the size of Glasgow, with the breadth and range of private commercial enterprise that entails, that doesn't have this problem.
yoshef September 17th, 2011, 02:47 PM ^^ There's a lot of gaudy and out of keeping shop frontage in Liverpool, especially Church Street - quite a few fine buildings spoilt by it.
yoshef September 17th, 2011, 02:49 PM btw those shots of Hull & Harrogate are great, Hull is so underrated.

Aaronj09 September 17th, 2011, 04:27 PM To say Glasgow got hit pretty badly in WW2, it sure has a lot of intact streetscapes!
Paul D September 17th, 2011, 07:12 PM btw those shots of Hull & Harrogate are great, Hull is so underrated.
I agree,Hull looks lovely there and Glasgow's superb.

Risking the ire of the Glasgwegian forumers, but it didn't though, did it?
crusty_bint September 17th, 2011, 11:20 PM Glasgow emerged relatively unscathed from WWII, in terms of Nazi bombing at least. The city suffered more at the hands of post-war planning and redevlopment. Theres a number of threads cover this, some images in the thread linked to at the bottom of my sig.
Glad you're all enjoying the pics :)

yoshef September 18th, 2011, 12:24 AM Mossy posted these fantastic shots of Castle Street in the urban showcase forum, my favourite street in Liverpool. It's had the pavement widened, along with new paving, road resurfacing, building-mounted street lighting and new street furniture installed recently, and it looks much better for it IMO. In a year or two, when a few more restaurants / coffee shops move in and those 'to let' signs dissapear, this will look fantastic.
Castle Street
Castle Street is one of the most beautiful commercial streets in Liverpool. At the north end of the street is Liverpool Town Hall built in 1754 and at the south end is the Queen Victoria Monument, built ontop of the original site of Liverpool Castle which the street is named after. . .

Aaronj09 September 18th, 2011, 12:31 AM Love Castle Street and, is that, Derby Square?
yoshef September 18th, 2011, 12:35 AM Yep Derby Square with the Victoria Monument
yoshef September 18th, 2011, 12:47 AM Some more - turn left at the town hall on to Water Street
Water Street
Water Street lies just behind the Royal Liver Building and is one of the only streets in Liverpool that truly makes you feel small. It is often quite dark but is full of interesting architecural details and important buildings . . .

And lastly is Oriel Chambers which is described as one of the most infuential buildings of its age. Built in 1864 it is the worlds first metal framed glass curtain walled building. It lead to many of the skyscraper buildings that were built in New York and Chicago in the later 19th Century.

Leeds No.1 September 18th, 2011, 01:16 AM Disingenuous, to say the least, to post and image of a Starbucks in, presumably the centre of, York, and a one-man-band sandwich shop in the residential, formerly heavily industrial, suburb of Possil.
Well, I actually just did a Google Image Search and have no idea where either of those units are. The point I was trying to make was that it's often the coffee shop chains like Starbucks that are the ones that look after/improve their buildings, while independents (ie the people who normally claim to care about the city) plaster their units with ugly signage/inappropriate cladding.

Yes, they are. Maybe it's just big chains that have the design expertise to get their brand/image right. Having said this, I fail to see how some people can't tell what looks bad, even if they don't know how to make it look good.

This is the bridge I went over when I went to Disney on Ice many moons ago.
crusty_bint September 19th, 2011, 02:40 PM Well, I actually just did a Google Image Search and have no idea where either of those units are. The point I was trying to make was that it's often the coffee shop chains like Starbucks that are the ones that look after/improve their buildings, while independents (ie the people who normally claim to care about the city) plaster their units with ugly signage/inappropriate cladding.
Again, disingenuous of you to pick on that one point in my response to you. Have a read again and mull over why a company like Starbucks who spent hundreds of millions developing an international brand identity, and the same again every year maintaining it, does shopfronts and signage better than a one man band sandwich shop in a local high street in a residential suburb...
Yosh, those pics are fantastic. Liverpool has a superb collection of regency and imperial architecture! Also, I will insist on pointing out (every time i see the, shall we say, misnomer...) that Gardners Warehouse in Glasgow pre-dates Oriel Chambers by a decade, and that two others of the same construction were built here between the dates of Gardners and Oriel (and yeah, i appreciate it wasn't yu wot said it  )
