Leeds No.1 September 19th, 2011, 11:22 PM Again, disingenuous of you to pick on that one point in my response to you. Have a read again and mull over why a company like Starbucks who spent hundreds of millions developing an international brand identity, and the same again every year maintaining it, does shopfronts and signage better than a one man band sandwich shop in a local high street in a residential suburb...
It doesn't cost millions of pounds to make something look presentable. Yes, Starbucks spend loads on it, but a lack of investment in design by independents doesn't mean they have to plaster their shopfront in ugly metal signs. There are many independents that know this and present their shopfronts well, and many chains that vandalise our streets. It's not about money.

crusty_bint September 20th, 2011, 11:50 AM moved to next page
kids September 20th, 2011, 01:32 PM No offence but do you have to quite relentlessly post pictures? I've been waiting to post about 6 for a couple of pages now but you always seem to be there, this time with about 90. Choose the best ones ffs.
cardiff September 20th, 2011, 07:46 PM Agreed, too many pics, often of the same things. Urban showcase might be the best place for these pics (where i will take the time to view them all as they are great!), and then just pick 5 or 6 to post here.
yoshef September 20th, 2011, 08:03 PM I enjoy the Crustyfests and even the Crustymegafests, but to be fair, I can sympathise with Kids. If someone has recently thrown up a load of images, I don't like posting other images immediately afterward, as it caused a few disgruntled posters in other threads. Having said that, keep up the good work Crusty.
flare September 20th, 2011, 08:04 PM Too many pictures that aren't "streetscape". Lovely as they are, more than half don't even have the street in!

crusty_bint September 21st, 2011, 10:39 AM back to the whining little bitch brigade i see.
the posts iv made on this thread are meant to give an impression of individual residential areas of the city of Glasgow, and i think ive achieved that with them. i do pick the best pics to post, it just so happens there are LOTS of them. none of you bat an eyelid when the likes of wigglet posts 40 streetview screen dumps of the same street/building then calculates what fraction of a percentage of the cbd of leeds that represents and how many completely different (as opposed to maybe only just slightly different?) streets there are in them. none of you bat an eyelid when cardiff posts pics of the louvres of multistorey car parks and other random shots. it's not my problem that you feel your images will pale when posted on the same page as the residential streets of Glasgow. i don't post often, it just so happens i have some free time for a wee while, whilst i recuperate.
so i'll keep doing what i'm doing, in the spirit of the thread. you lot keep bleeting and whining if you want.
deal with it, 'ho.
no offence, innit.

;)
superb as per, Yosh! i adore that curvey terracotta-y building!
Scarecrow September 21st, 2011, 11:55 AM Pair of bastards. How dare you both post pictures in a picture thread?
kids September 21st, 2011, 03:08 PM back to the whining little bitch brigade i see.
the posts iv made on this thread are meant to give an impression of individual residential areas of the city of Glasgow, and i think ive achieved that with them. i do pick the best pics to post, it just so happens there are LOTS of them. none of you bat an eyelid when the likes of wigglet posts 40 streetview screen dumps of the same street/building then calculates what fraction of a percentage of the cbd of leeds that represents and how many completely different (as opposed to maybe only just slightly different?) streets there are in them. none of you bat an eyelid when cardiff posts pics of the louvres of multistorey car parks and other random shots. it's not my problem that you feel your images will pale when posted on the same page as the residential streets of Glasgow. i don't post often, it just so happens i have some free time for a wee while, whilst i recuperate.

Are you mental? I counted, you posted 90 huge pictures on this page. 90!?! It's fucking nuts. Nothing to do with jealously. More to do with my computer freezing. Wiggley's street view caps were offensive, but this was just on another level. Please choose the best ones (of the best ones :|.)
crusty_bint September 21st, 2011, 03:28 PM yeah, so thats a reasonable reaction, huh? get yourself a computer that doesn't run on paraffin, upgrade your bellend broadband and get. over. it.
kids September 21st, 2011, 03:48 PM My bellend broadband?
Seen as we're personifying inanimate, flying bits of invisible data, your nob head cuntish twatface images pissed me off and I reacted in kind. o0o0o0o GET OVA IT!!!
crusty_bint September 21st, 2011, 04:23 PM i didn't personify anything, i merely inferred your computer and internet connection are shit if theyre freezing so easily.
kids these days...
kids September 21st, 2011, 04:47 PM Woahh. Ouch. You must be some kind of comedian or something to be able to scythe me down that ruthlessly.
Boards September 21st, 2011, 04:56 PM Just post your pictures ffs...
kids September 21st, 2011, 05:33 PM Nah I'll wait for a better mood ta.
cardiff September 21st, 2011, 08:59 PM Think you misunderstad (myself at least). I want to see your pics, but i dont come to the UK citytalk section to see 90 of your pics. however i would go to the urban showcase section to see 90 of your pics, like i see the Bristol, Liverpool, Belfast threads and to post my own pictures. This simply isnt the area to post so many pics that i ignor most of them to see if there are any other cities pictures. Just limit yourself to a few like i do :)
crusty_bint September 21st, 2011, 09:57 PM what a fucking drama queen.
cardiff, i haven't misunderstood, i removed the images from one of my posts on the previous page earlier today (and now they appear here). these images dont qualify for the urban showcase, but there is a thread in the cityscape & skyline section, see link in my sig.
so. moving on. here's what i'll do. seeing as yoshef's post of 31 images didnt cause any stir i'll take that as a perfectly acceptable number and allow, say, +/-10 either side of that and il post one set of images per page.
if anyone has a problem with that, well, you can go fuck yourself :) x

Boards September 21st, 2011, 10:49 PM so. moving on. here's what i'll do. seeing as yoshef's post of 31 images didnt cause any stir i'll take that as a perfectly acceptable number and allow, say, +/-10 either side of that and il post one set of images per page.
Seems reasonable. There's been plenty of thirty and forty plus picture posts in this thread, with many, many duplicate shots, and no-ones bothered their arse. I don't recall anyone ever discussing a max picture number per post? I don't really see the problem myself, I'm running a five year old laptop with a really shitty connection speed and I've never waited more than thirty seconds on a picture heavy page. I would have thought anyone interested enough in architecture and streetscapes to be on this forum looking at this thread, would be quite happy to view all the pictures like myself. You're also logically posting various locales away from the City Centre, a foreign concept to most on here. I can only imagine some people are worried no-one will see their pictures as they think everyone on here is as facile as themselves.
BTW. Hadn't posted in this thread since June before those Gorbals pics had you?

Yep, it fronts the northern train shed, although its mostly student halls now.

like i said to captain queef earlier, it had certainly been months since i last posted, couldn't say when for sure. but yes, the gorbals pics was my first post in a while.
i have no empathy for anyone who sees me posting pics of Glasgow's residential suburbs as some kind of threat to the way they perceive their city and it's standing within the UK, nor some primadonna who throws a hissy fit because he wants to post a couple of pics. hope to fuck they are worth the wait.

Tbf, I have no empathy for some mong who is so insecure, so self conscious about where he lives that they allocate countless hours of their life to trawling the web seeking endless amounts pictures to snake into peoples eyesights in vain hope of a purpose. You waited for the page to load so you could post 90 images of where you live ffs. Fucking get over it.
Telfordboy September 22nd, 2011, 01:20 PM Come along children, no need to fight.
I like the Glasgow shots but sometimes this thread can be hard going on my computer. If we could manage to not go overboard it would be great.
Kids, would you hurry up and post your shots because I'm keen to see more of Manchester too.
crusty_bint September 22nd, 2011, 01:21 PM so speaks the guy with 8000+ posts, who has time to argue in the "second city" thread, who has time to count the number of pictures i posted over three posts, who has time to bitch, whine, abuse, moan and wank, but no time to put similar compilations of pics together to contribute to the thread rather than this bile.
you. get over it.
i won't be responding to, or even reading your posts from now on. knock yourself out.

kids September 22nd, 2011, 01:26 PM Come along children, no need to fight.
I like the Glasgow shots but sometimes this thread can be hard going on my computer. If we could manage to not go overboard it would be great.
Kids, would you hurry up and post your shots because I'm keen to see more of Manchester too.
Who said I was posting pics of Manchester! Well, I was, but I've also been planning on posting images of Douglas alongside pics of medieval and premodern architecture in Manchester in order to get other people to post their city's medieval and pre modern architecture. I think that trumps the massive splurges of insecurity you get from from the bint every now again. I've seen most of those streets before in Glasgow. I get it. I don't really care, sorry but it's not very interesting to me.
kids September 22nd, 2011, 01:30 PM so speaks the guy with 8000+ posts, who has time to argue in the "second city" thread, who has time to count the number of pictures i posted over three posts, who has time to bitch, whine, abuse, moan and wank, but no time to put similar compilations of pics together to contribute to the thread rather than this bile.
you. get over it.
i won't be responding to, or even reading your posts from now on. knock yourself out.
You started the personal shit mate. Your pics are boring. Congrats on ruining another page.
Awayo September 22nd, 2011, 01:30 PM To be fair, Douglas is a very handsome man.
kids September 22nd, 2011, 01:38 PM My Dad's called Douglas. :bowtie:
To clarify, I am not going to post pictures of my Dad in here. Though to be fair that would be an improvement on endless pictures of Glasgow's west end.
Paul D September 22nd, 2011, 03:17 PM There's some beautiful architecture around Glasgow,I'm always impressed by it.
Boards September 22nd, 2011, 04:05 PM :)
Kids, can't you just ignore the pics if you don't like them? The Gorbals, Shawlands and Langside are on the Southside and Dennistoun is in the East End. Most of Crusty's pics haven't actually been posted here before. There's hundreds of pictures of the same streets in this thread, vast swaths of the pics here do nothing for me, but plenty of other people enjoy them. Given the length of the thread reposts are a necessity anyway as a refresher or for new people viewing the thread.
Anyway, it would a shame if you didn't post your pics and your chosen themes. Of all the hundreds of posters in here, you've always been one the tiny handful I actually respect, so I always look forward to your posts.
cardiff September 22nd, 2011, 06:56 PM Jesus what a drama queen, get over yourself. You seem so far up your own arse you can't see the sunlight for the amount of pics you have posted! No one gives a shit about the fact you've posted pics of glasgow, they give a shit that every time you post you obliterate their bandwidth! And you call us drama queens, can't see anyone else making as much drama about it than you lol and I know how you are going to reply, in a very aggressive(as always) way. You're acting like a twat mate
indiekid September 22nd, 2011, 07:29 PM Who said I was posting pics of Manchester! I don't want to touch this argument, but since I'd like to see your photos I suggest a compromise. Post your photos of Douglas in the "Smaller Towns and Cities" thread. Then for the medieval and pre modern pics (great idea), I shall make a new thread, "Periods of Architecture". Savvy?
Btw great photos of Liverpool in the last page, really debunks that false claim that the city isn't grand away from the waterfront.:)
cardiff September 23rd, 2011, 06:32 PM Oh yes forgot to say how nice the Liverpool pics are, loving your photo thread as well!

No one said it isn't grand, it's just that away from the annexed waterfront area, the city proper or urban fabric is just akin to any other medium sized townlike city be it Nottingham or leeds as an example, which means its not exceptional like manchester whose consistent urban fabric throughout the entire city centre is grand, and exceptional in that no other provincial English city comes close.
Aaronj09 September 24th, 2011, 02:06 AM Liverpool has a fantastic streetscape away from the waterfront, better than Manchester no doubt and not even comparable to Leeds or Nottingham.
I'd also challenge that the urban fabric in Manchester's entire city centre is 'grand' when it has a shit parts.

Bit of a strange observation, if you want 'grand' Liverpool Cathedral easily kicks the arse of every building in Manchester, Leeds or Nottingham.

Manc is more glued together yes, but when Liverpool's urban fabric is repaired with more and more development filling in gaps, the difference will become more and more obvious.
Leeds No.1 September 24th, 2011, 11:07 PM Prefer the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Anglican Cathedral is big, but architecturally nothing special.
Paul D September 24th, 2011, 11:26 PM Prefer the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Anglican Cathedral is big, but architecturally nothing special.
The Metropolitan Cathedral has nothing on the Anglican,it's an amazing space inside,it's our best best building by a mile, everyone I know thinks the same.

Have you visited them both? The Anglican is on another planet to the Met.
yoshef September 25th, 2011, 01:00 AM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3649/3282531740_3b6da5ef30_b.jpg
^^ Bet you it gets cold on the top floor of that taller building!
Leeds No.1 September 25th, 2011, 01:25 AM Yes I have, and I'd actually go as far to say I find the Anglican Cathedral ugly. Bigger isn't always better; it's size is overbearing, and only works with more detail as with York Minster or St. Pauls. More importantly than all of that, the Metropolitan Cathedral is far more architecturally representative of what Christianity stands for.
yoshef September 25th, 2011, 04:06 PM One is monumental, imposing, humbling. The other one looks like a big concrete space gun. I like the Met, but the comparison to the Anglican is laughable.
Delirium September 25th, 2011, 04:16 PM I prefer the Synagogue. :colbert:
yoshef September 25th, 2011, 04:34 PM Princes Road? Well it beats the space gun, needs its minarets back though.
wiggleyleeds September 25th, 2011, 04:41 PM What you said yoshef didn't rebutt what I said.
Also, repair and filling in of open blots won't make a difference as its whole completed streets of buildings making up the bulk of the city centre that look no different to other medium sized cities which is why i find manchesters centre exceptional and not Liverpool (or any other mid sized city for that matter as nice as they all are)
yoshef September 25th, 2011, 05:40 PM What is there to rebutt[sic]? You said if you take the bulk of Liverpool's business district away, Manchester looks exceptional. So?
If my auntie had balls she'd be my uncle.
Required September 25th, 2011, 07:31 PM Manc is more glued together yes, but when Liverpool's urban fabric is repaired with more and more development filling in gaps, the difference will become more and more obvious.
Here's hoping :okay:
Liverpool certainly has the potential, and nowhere more glaringly obvious than the waterfront. The waterfront skyline depends too much on the Liver building, the other buildings on the waterfront aren't nearly as impressive. My favourite architectural feature of Liverpool is the Georgian quarter, something Manchester'll never have.
All this said, Manchester has the better city centre in my opinion.
tomo90 September 25th, 2011, 07:56 PM Looking at these pics, Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester's streetscapes are practically the same with some variations but nothing major.
The problem with Liverpool is some of its best buildings are around the business quarter and gaytown (not gaytown itself just around Victoria and Castle street - that whole area) and there is not any reason to walk around there unless you work there.
Conor September 26th, 2011, 01:07 AM Lovin' the manc stuff!!

aek-94 September 26th, 2011, 08:10 PM Nice photos, Belfast looks great! :cheers2:
Pablo Diablo September 26th, 2011, 08:42 PM No one said it isn't grand, it's just that away from the annexed waterfront area, the city proper or urban fabric is just akin to any other medium sized townlike city be it Nottingham or leeds as an example, which means its not exceptional like manchester whose consistent urban fabric throughout the entire city centre is grand, and exceptional in that no other provincial English city comes close.
Lol wiggles I knew you were a bit loony but this post is just...
You think Liverpool is a medium sized town-city like Nottingham and Leeds?!?!:lol: Liverpool was the second city of England for nearly 100 years! Even now it's over twice the size of those big towns!
Nottingham and Leeds have nothing that compares to Exchange Flags, William Brown Street or the Georgian Quarter... and none of those are on the waterfront! The best comparison to Liverpool is its twin that lies directly across the sea, Dublin.
Manchester certainly is very nice (I'll be moving there soon) but I'd hardly call it "exceptional"! (I wouldn't actually call any British city exceptional, except maybe Edinburgh).
yoshef September 26th, 2011, 11:08 PM Lovin' the pics of Belfast.

Richard_A September 27th, 2011, 11:46 PM Great shot. Not a common perspective either these days.
Richard_A September 27th, 2011, 11:55 PM Prefer the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Anglican Cathedral is big, but architecturally nothing special.
Definitely one of the most ridiculous comments I've seen on this forum. It reads like the random prattlings of a fool.
Leeds No.1 September 28th, 2011, 12:05 AM Well tell me what is so architecturally special about the Anglican Cathedral above any other church or cathedral in the world? It's almost the epitome of what a stereotypical church looks like.

It's a unique example of the early 20th Century fusion of Gothic and muscular industrial & commercial architecture. In detail, it's Gothic, in proportions and shape, it has more in common with epic power stations or the offices of huge US corporations.
If you look at it and see "the epitome of what a stereotypical church looks like", one has to wonder what on earth you are doing here on what is predominantly an architecture forum.

albionfagan September 28th, 2011, 09:28 PM Liverpool's streetscape is great, best thing about the city.
No city in England has a city centre which can range from the magnificence of the Docks and then up to beauty and elegance of Canning.
Manchester is good, but really don't see anything in its armory which can outmuscle Liverpool's commercial district.

Funny you say that. When I stayed at the Liverpool Malmaison a few years back, I was struck by its Manhattan 'Batman' Gothic decor inside. Leaving the main entrance in the evening to see the moon-like clock-face of the Liver Building towering over to the left, the feeling was only reinforced.
That Chicago shot I posted earlier... rather made me wonder what Liverpool may have ended up like if British 20th century history had turned out a little differently.

I don't mean to be negative it's just we have seen Glasgow's tenement stuff sooo much in this thread. I've stopped posting Manchester because i think i'd be repeating myself. Maybe refreshers are necessary but that was just over kill. I would just personally like to see more of a variety of pics with posts following specific and interesting themes (like this page!), rather than standard stuff in bulk. I complimented crusty on his photos of modern architecture in The Gorbals, that was good tbf.
Anyway, nice one that man. I also count you among few I look to in this place. I'll see what I can do.
kids September 29th, 2011, 02:57 AM I don't want to touch this argument, but since I'd like to see your photos I suggest a compromise.
You could! But I actually think this could just go in hidden gems. Will do that actually. :)
albionfagan September 29th, 2011, 04:39 AM I honestly don't know how anyone could have been around Liverpool Docks tonight and think Manc, Leeds or Brum can come close.
As Miliband said, there's a reason Liverpool's the only city outside of London to have had a gvt office in their city.
May not be anymore but Liverpool exudes a grandness only London can match.

streetlegal October 3rd, 2011, 12:40 AM Cool shots of Leeds--it's really come on since I was there as a student in the late 1980's. When managed properly, car traffic can add to the urban fabric, as it seems to do nicely in the photos of the town square.

Aaronj09 October 3rd, 2011, 03:17 PM Wow, Dublin is very beautiful.
Required October 3rd, 2011, 04:08 PM I love Dublin. A laid back feel pervades the streets, a bit like Amsterdam. It doesn't push the boundaries of architecture, instead sticking with the tried and tested, which I like.
Leeds No.1 October 3rd, 2011, 09:24 PM Dublin is what a lot of British cities could be like if they had the investment they deserved.
I do like Dublin, but there are parts of the City Centre that still need to catch up with the regenerated areas. I'm sure it will come in time.
Required October 3rd, 2011, 11:53 PM Dublin is what a lot of British cities could be like if they had the investment they deserved.
You mean Dublin is what a lot of British cities could be like if they were knocked down and rebuilt in a style that was popular in England from roughly 1715 to 1830, and as an architectural set piece of Ireland :okay:
Aaronj09 October 3rd, 2011, 11:55 PM Dublin does feel like a museum.
Required October 4th, 2011, 12:30 AM I like museums :shifty:

Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant lies in the University/Knowledge quarter of the city and is home to the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King. The street has a variety of architecture styles from georgian terrace houses/shops to victorian redbrick, classical and modern . . . .

The view from the bridge above, one of Jesse Hartley's Stanley Dock warehouses. Similar in style to his Albert Dock warehouses, this warehouse was partially destroyed from bombing in world war 2. Apart from a few filmsets, a nightclub and a sunday market, this complex is pretty much untouched since they were abandoned for port use in 1980s, and retains a lot of its original features. Could do with a bit of TLC!

Opposite the warehouse above, one of Liverpool's biggest buildings - Lyster's huge Tobacco Warehouse. This later addition to the complex was built during the end of the 1800s / early 1900s by partially filling in the dock, and building in front of the existing warehouses on the southern side.

In the same area there is the Tea Warehouse. Not on the same scale as the Tobacco Warehouse of course, but not a small building, by any means. This photographs shows the end, the building is over twice as deep, as can be seen on streetview here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=regent+road+liverpool&hl=en&ll=53.419431,-2.996832&spn=0.002733,0.008256&hnear=Regent+Rd,+Crosby,+Liverpool,+Merseyside+L23,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=18&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=53.419441,-2.996556&panoid=rSud3xgmuTit5JQ6Vu3esg&cbp=12,315.46,,0,-16.37).

The Wapping Warehouse, on Wapping Dock, divides the Baltic Triangle area from the redeveloped "Kings Dock" district, the location of the Arena & Conference Centre. You can see the continuation of iron columns along the waterfront, denoting the original extent of the warehouse, which was damaged in the war.

Gah, jealous of you living in the city. I live in the 'burbs.
Ordsall (the bit with the tower blocks) is improving but it's an ugly place at the moment. The only link between the Quays and the City is the thin thread of railway line which carries the met, because you certainly wouldn't walk around there at the moment!
Having said that, a few months ago the whole embankment on the Ordsall side was cleared to make way for some big new waterside development, so soon you should be able to walk from Castlefield to Exchange Quay at least!

I don't live in the city, really - I live in Old Trafford (although I'm only about a 10 min walk from Cornbrook).
It'll be great if Ordsall is redeveloped. If the gap between SQ and the city centre was closed, there wouldn't really be a 'city centre' any more... there'd just be 'Central Manchester'.
If redevelopment continues, I could see the area where I'm living being absorbed into 'Central Manchester' in 20 or 30 years.

I agree, the Quays will most certainly get swallowed up soon. Trafford Council needs to get its act together on Pomona/Old Trafford/Trafford Embankment area real soon and turn it all into something very special. They could use Old Trafford Stadium as a catalyst.
Anyway, on the subject of the Quays, here're some streetscape shots;
(The Trafford Embankment is there on the opposite side of the canal. Hotels, restaurants, bars and maybe even a market would do very well there, especially on match days as OT stadium is only just off the shot)

Tis indeed!
Yes Beetham really is massive. It can literally be seen from across the GM region, I see it twice on my way to school every morning, and the closest I get to the centre of town is about 5 miles..

I'm sure you can see it from the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool. It's small in the distance, but I'm sure I spotted it when I was up there!

Well it says on the Wiki page that this can be seen from 10 counties!
1) Greater Manchester
2) Merseyside
3) Lancashire
4) Cheshire
5) Derbyshire
6) West Yorkshire
Surely no where else, that surrounds a vast area! And it also made clear English* counties.
* so non of the Welsh counties..
aek-94 October 24th, 2011, 12:05 AM I find it hard to believe that if it can be viewed from Merseyside and Cheshire, it can't be viewed from any of the Welsh counties?
Cheshire is very flat, with the next mountainous area being in Flintshire, so I'm pretty sure you'll be able to view it from there...

Maybe it can be, but Wiki only mentioned 10 English counties.
Yes it probably can be viewed from Flintshire actually. Having said that, how many days of the year are you actually going to sucessfully view it? And does that still make it possible to "view it", if you get me? So like, is there a certain number of days a year that a building has to be viewed from a certain area otherwise it's deemed unseeable from that location?

Ah yeah!
That could be the reason why it doesn't mention it then.
With the wonderful weather we have, I can't imagine it being viewable for many days of the year :sleepy:

Yeah but I can't ever see the council enforcing such rule, they definitely ruin a building and are only fit for retail parks.
VQ/ The Corn Exchange/ The light are the only places in Leeds that enforce it. Its up to the landlords, it seems Eastgate might have uniform signage and Trinity seems to use the tacky ones seen on the Currys store.

Proud to be a Loiner seeing those pics above. Leeds really does surprise the visitor with its attractive achitecture. I bring thousands of business people to Leeds for training and events, and the first thing people notice is how attractive the city centre is with buildings like the Town Hall, Civic Hall, the city arcades, Corn Exchange, VQ. They comment on the huge pedestrian areas with a wide range of shopping opportunites with no fewer than 7 shoppping centres, and its nightlife, top class restaurants and bars/clubs etc.
aek-94 October 24th, 2011, 09:03 PM There are some very nice photographs of Leeds there.
Thanks for posting 10123 :)

streetlegal October 25th, 2011, 05:21 AM Nice to see some great buildings in Leeds. It seems to have really come on since I studied at uni there in the 80's. I always felt that it was somehow less than the sum of its parts, perhaps because so many of the great arcades aren't immediately visible and some of the center's outlying streets were, in those days, somewhat shabby, not to say dead.
Looks like it has moved on . . .
VoldemortBlack October 25th, 2011, 10:56 AM Took this picture last night as I walked down Trafford Embankment listening to Moonlight Serenande by Glenn Miller. It was so perfect!

Leeds Town Hall looks so grand!
Driving down the road between the Town Hall and the Central Library reminded me a lot of Liverpool.

garethwyn October 26th, 2011, 06:34 PM Slightly losing the will to live, certainly the will to wade through endless pics of just about every building in Leeds
VoldemortBlack October 26th, 2011, 08:06 PM I agree.
1038362753723, I'm not having a crack at Leeds, but it's a bit fucking painful having to wait 10 minutes everytime I want to see the pictures (of which I look at about 5 and then give up).
Just post like 5 images at a time, let people comment, then post again the next day/two days later. Not 387373 at a time.
10123 October 26th, 2011, 08:26 PM Other members post millions of pictures at once. Yes it can be annoying, which is why I have posted more than once for each set of pictures instead of an entire set at once.

Perhaps it gives the reader an insight into the history of the street?

oscar9 October 26th, 2011, 11:00 PM Nice to see someone has the courage to post the more gritty areas rather than cherry picking the best parts:).I am bored now of people posting pictures of the nice streetscapes and buildings . We all know our main cities have some impressive old buildings and clean modern ones.
Instead lets see more streetscapes with some grit for a change , all the big UK cities have their gritty areas . Don't be shy to show them:cheers:
Aaronj09 October 26th, 2011, 11:12 PM I guess it's similar to when crusty_bint was posting endless pictures of Glasgow, nobody else is posting so why the hell not. ;)
Skychaser 2005 October 26th, 2011, 11:29 PM Sorry I don't want to see gritty back streets, I want to see our cities in all their glory. Smart buildings, parks, squares. I want to see pictures which tell me why a city is doing well, why a city can be proud of what it looks like.
So often on citytalk forumers make rash comments about cities without really knowing what they are like or what they offer. Pics can help us make judgments in a more informed way, especially when we havent visited them before.
oscar9 October 26th, 2011, 11:35 PM You need to see the gritty back streets as well
Good cafe this, in the Norther Quarter,

Glasvegas October 27th, 2011, 01:10 PM Really enjoyed those Leeds pics. It's a city I have travelled to but haven't familiarised myself with, so it's nice to see what I missed. I must admit, I definitely prefer photographs (in a photo thread) to whinging. More photos, less whinging.

Leeds No.1 October 27th, 2011, 01:42 PM Nice to see a bit of Dublin; we definitely don't see enough of Dublin- or the rest of Ireland for that matter.
limerickguy October 27th, 2011, 01:51 PM Nice to see a bit of Dublin; we definitely don't see enough of Dublin- or the rest of Ireland for that matter.
Thanks Leeds, i'll try and post some more of the "old" Dublin from the centre of the city later to balance the Dublin pics out!
Leeds No.1 October 27th, 2011, 02:02 PM My dad is from Dublin so I know the city relatively well. I always think it's what British cities could be like if the government actually bothered to invest in them; around the regenerated areas at least.

I've always thought this. There's a hell lot going on transport-wise in Dublin, undergrounds and all this. Dublin is the average size of most, major, British cities too.
I want a Northern Revolution, and fast. I don't want to be ruled by this shit government anymore. :ohno:

It's not just this government though, but every government since the Victorian age.
I've only been able to see two ways round this- the first is for the North to fight for devolution; but I don't want any referendums because most people don't understand the scenario or what devolution would mean.
The second is to say 'we're sick of Westminster' and put faith in Brussels. From what I can see, the north gets more funding from Brussels than Westminster with things like the Manchester tram loan, a new airport for South Yorkshire and funding of Tower Works here in Leeds.
I'm not really bothered where the power lies, as long as we get a fair deal. The point is we need to shout about the importance of removing power from Westminster.

Instead of a referendum, could we not just Unite the Northern counties and divert government tax into a new "United Northern Parliament"?
I'd like to see how Scotland gets on with Independence (if it gets it) and then we can make a decision from there.
Either way, I don't want to be ruled by Westminster anymore, all they're interested in is the South East. :ohno:

Northern Quarter, Manchester (this is the gritty, urban, vintage area of the city. And it's expanding, too! The industrial area of Ancoats will probably be the next to be converted).
