Love the banner saying "commercial district" just in case you forget! Do you have banners in Liverpool for other disctricts such as "shopping district"

The Headrow is okay, but the road layout itself lets it down. The buildings are generally grand and important (Town Hall, Crown & Magistrates Courts, Central Library, City Art Gallery, Henry Moore Institute, The Light etc) but the carriageway is curvy not straight, some bits dual, others with wide pavements... do one or the other!

It's a Business Improvement District, they pay an extra tax and spend it how they want in that district. I guess they voted have the branding displayed around the area.

I've never been to Chester. Is it worth the trip? Is there the one showcase street or does that style spread over a slightly larger area?

The whole City Centre tends to keep the same theme of Georgion/Tudor style.

A lot of the towns in Cheshire and bordering counties have a fair amount of tudor style, plus the local red brick/stone , even here in Wigan the main street has loads of (mock) tudor

You could say the same about the red brick and terracotta of Manchester and places like Wigan, but there is no comparison really. Anyway, Chester is more famous for its Roman walls and its superb zoo than it's magnificent shopping streets.

Portobello Red, why are you being so defensive? It was a fair comment made by Tomo90. The majority of the Mann Island photo's you posted aren't even streetscape photos. As nice as the photos and the buildings are they don't belong in this thread.

If you want to see other views so badly, then why don't you post them yourself.

No use whinging about other people's posts like an internet crank.

You know, I've heard several people say that Manchester shares resemblances with New York. Before now, I've s******ed at this, believing that Manchester could only dream to be like New York.

This picture, however.

Our grid-like street pattern (particulary in Piccadilly, Ancoats and the Northern Quarter) is so because Manchester developed at the same time as many American cities (including NY) did.

Due also to this, Manchester has many Gothic & Red Brick buildings (like the one you see above). Although New York is a predominantly Art Deco city, it does share some of the Victorian & Gothic architecture that Manchester does, and they're certain bits and peices of the city that do look like a 40s version of the city.

I'll finish by adding that the Northern Quarter has been the set of various New York-staged films over the last decade. Picture;

Unfortunately Exchange Quay IS a soulless business complex, but there's a recent scheme launched & approved to change all that which includes more offices, appartments and a big new hotel, all built around a new public square with more shops & restaurants (not sure if that bit has been approved though)

Ancoats

This is a residential neighbourhood in the City; also known as East Village or Little Italy. Currently being redeveloped, Ancoats was the world's first industrial suburb.

Look at those mills!

The church you see on the right there is St Peter's Church, recently renovated along with the buildings and public space around it. It'll soon be home to the Halle Orchestra, which I assume will play live there some nights.

Normally I like to see streetscape pictures of Manchester but every building in that shot looks absolutely awful. They look like they belong in a soulless business park on the M4 corridor.

It's in Salford quays, a fair distance from the city centre. It's not really a street scape, more like an A road scape! ;)

^^

I'll post some more when I find them.

It only really fills a few blocks at the moment. The main NQ streets are Oldham Road, Dale St and Edge St. There's also Tib St but only because of Afflecks.

However there's been several new vintage NQ-style bars and cafes (but mainly bars) opened up on surrounding streets, so it's obviously expanding :)

One interesting district I didn't get time to go to was The Northern Quarter, in this part of the **** you can find a bit of everything, shops selling rare records and vintage clothing, Islamic cable TV stations, sex shops, jazz clubs, a Buddhist centre, martial arts acadamies, a craft centre, dirt-cheap Pakistani and Lebanese cafes and some of the ****'s most fashionable bars. These photos were taken by forumer Markydeedrop.

As much as I appreciate the interior of Leeds Market, I wish I could go in on a non-market day when all the stalls were taken out to experience the roof/ceiling properly.

And I love Leeds Museum, great place.

It only really fills a few blocks at the moment. The main NQ streets are Oldham Road, Dale St and Edge St. There's also Tib St but only because of Afflecks.

No its not. The idea of the Northern Quarter developed mainly around Thomas Street, High Street, the northern part of Tib Street, the area next to and including the Craft Centre and Smithfield Markets, in order to rejuvenate the area. It was all hemmed in by Oldham ‘Street.’ The area east of Oldham Street and Stevenson Square consisted of virtually nothing - no bars, no restaurants. Afflecks Place has only recently come to be known as being within the confines of the NQ, just. Its a reason why there are still few places to eat and drink out towards Picc Station, in comparison to the area immediately surrounding the Thomas Street/High Street. Though things are slowly changing.

I think it was reclaimed from Georges Dock, and then turned into the modest plaza it is today, but the chap to ask would be Golden Vision on the Liverpool forum. Given that the Goree Warehouses used to run down the strand behind the Pier Head, might be worth Googling them too?

That picture is either from Lower Castle street or Fenwick Street, the original James Street Station would be in that rubble, maybe? Anyway, in the immediate foreground is a bombsite looking onto the Goree Warehouses. Behind the warehousing is the LOR, and then the Pier Head.

Whilst I enjoy these photos, this thread is for streetscape, not buildings.

To me, that means features incorporating paving, street furniture, orientation, lighting, etc.

Whilst I love the Northern Quarter, the pavements themselves are absolutely awful, and the sheer amount of street clutter ruins the overall experience.

Here's another from Midsummer Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes, rising up from Campbell (City) Park entrance. Which other British CBD has Porte Cocheres and 10,000 trees?

Not just Manchester, but it seems particularly bad there compared to other cities.

Manchester City Council doesn't provide anywhere near enough bins for the volume of people/litter, then wonders why it has a street cleanliness problem. If it spent on prevention, rather than cure, it wouldn't be overbudget (and having to make cuts) on dealing with the problem.

Of course, Albert Square is always spotless....

Something a bit different - not something many see on here! As you'll see, along Crescent and Chapel Street, there's some stunning buildings - and a stunning amount of dilapidation, which is being addressed through a large regeneration programme that will result in this part of Salford being further integrated into Manchester City Centre.

Manchester town hall is in a sort of Venetian neo Gothic style. The Victorian buildings in Chester are an attempt to idealise English architecture from Chester... The main difference being that people don't collectively assume that Manchester town hall is in any way a medieval building.

Ah, but a great deal of those building in Chester that look like copies, are in fact genuine behind the facade! A great example of this is the "Shakespear" pub on fountain street in Manc. Looks like a faux Tudor effort, but is actually a genuine Tudor building transported from Chester in the 1930's!!

By this I do not mean images of low rise Victoriana (as this thread now seems dedicated to), but the actual streets themselves. In a 20 minute walk, I counted no less than 13 types of paving surfaces (some nice York stone, some of the unique red brick herringbone style in much of the city cenre, but so many different types of cheap concrete slabs). Compare this to somewhere like the City of London, or Manchester, then the effect of this is to make the city feel far less cohesive, and rather messy. Ditto, furniture, bollards, signposting. It was a mess, which was a real shame and detracted from the overall feel of the city.

So, are there any plans to change this; to smarten up the city by upgrading the public realm?

Felt exactly the same way sdav96s, i thought it criminal the main shopping street hadnt been paved in the same materials as the Bullring. Red brick is one of the most cheap look paving materials IMO and to have it on the main shopping drag not only cheapened it, but clashed horribly with what is predominantly very impressive architecture.

During the six nations, Cardiff normally puts up the Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish Italian and French flag on that stretch of St Mary Street. Well, they did last year anyway.

The building is The Borough Pub (£2 a pint in there bra'). God knows what is above it, but I'd wager it's just storage of some kind.

This is on a major city centre street that was very controversially pedestrianised 2-3 years ago. It's not perfect, but it's so much better than it was before, and really gives people an opportunity to look up at some great buildings.

Definitely my favourite gang of buildings in central Glasgow, imposing and grand without resorting to the extreme levels of decoration and sculpture of previous years, while retaining at least some local character. They all want to be much higher than they actually are, it's a shame no proper Art Deco skyscrapers were built. Maybe we could buy and ship over a couple of Detroits amazing towers? :)

Many of the Chicago-school architects were actually trained by Glaswegian mentors. Hence why the style was so popular here in the 20s.

Well said that man! There are plans for upgrading the public realm, but I'm not totally sure where all the various proposals are in terms of actually being implemented -

The Colmore Business District (the area around the cathedral) have invested in street improvements and a new public square, as well as new way-finding points.

See Feltip's blog for more details - http://birminghamcentral.blogspot.com/search/label/Big%20City%20Plan

With the coming of the metro down Corporation Street I'm hoping we'll have an overhaul of the redbrick paving, whilst the Big City Plan revealed some of the potential plans for the rest of the retail area - New Street, High Street etc - again I'd hope that there was a unified approach here.

Was browsing back through the thread and found the Retail street bid by Make Architects, they have added some new pictures and it looks really good! Just what Birmingham needs.

The Southside BID has seen some new paving and smartening up of the area around Hurst Street, whilst the Jewellery Quarter BID is working on a couple of new squares and a similar 'smartening up' approach.

How these different approaches work together is still yet to be seen, but, particularly the retail area proposals, they should be a massive improvement.

Yeah the mismatch of pavement details is common in Birmingham. It is however being addressed with all major proposals now.

When originally developed, alot of sites back in the 70's through to the 90's this type of detail was overlooked.

Anyway ... (No Paving ;))

Birmingham in the snow.

Great pictures Cardiff.

I use to have a job in Ledbury, nice quaint town and I use to live in Worcester.

Great city.

Probably one of the best for it's size in the UK.

Good shopping, restaurants, nightlife, sports, university. The best thing within a 30 mile radius of Birmingham plus it has some cracking developments going on including the new Worcester City Football Stadium and Worcester Wolves Arena.

Cricket club is also expanding including a hotel and then you have Worcester Warriors where Cecil Duckworth is keen to make them one of the top club's in Europe + a David Lloyd tennis/hotel complex going next to the current sixways stadium.

The University also bucked national trends and became the fastest growing UK university for the 7th year in a row and had an increase of applications by 9% in 2011/12 which means the city is only going to grow.

For a city of 90,000 it punches well above it's weight I feel and it's location and geography is great.

River Severn, Malvern Hills and easy access to places like Ledbury or Birmingham.

Worcesters skyline is pretty decent to coming in from Shrub Hill.

Lots of spires and churches. This doesn't show them all but it's the best I could find easy.

The above aren't necessarily the best photos to demonstrate it, but for sheer diversity and interest I've never enjoyed walking around a British city more than Manchester, and for me, it's the only city that can look central London in the eye.

It may not always be beautiful, there may be a lack of greenery and it's not a picture postcard view at every turn, but I just loved walking around the city. A real sense of wondering 'what is around the corner'.
