As with all jokes, there is a kernel of truth here. As Jonathan Meades put it, "architecture is one of the glues that bind the state." Just look at the pivotal role that architecture played in the Third Reich, the church in Medieval England, Soviet Russia, etc, etc.

Well to be fair, the architecture in Scotland isn't really any different to the rest of Britain, apart from the building materials perhaps, it's just that theirs is preserved better.

This is probably better in another thread somewhere, but there are some distinct differences, particularly in housing design (i.e. tenements vs. terraces)

Quite. As for preserved better, certainly not in Glasgow's case. The book showing areas of Glasgow in previous incarnations isn't called The City That Disappeared because it was well preserved...Massive scale demolition of stunning areas and buildings. Five new towns built to remove residents from the City and agreements with sixty areas to take more residents. Raped :ohno:

Great pictures Cardiff.

I use to have a job in Ledbury, nice quaint town and I use to live in Worcester.

Great city.

Probably one of the best for it's size in the UK.

Good shopping, restaurants, nightlife, sports, university. The best thing within a 30 mile radius of Birmingham plus it has some cracking developments going on including the new Worcester City Football Stadium and Worcester Wolves Arena.

Cricket club is also expanding including a hotel and then you have Worcester Warriors where Cecil Duckworth is keen to make them one of the top club's in Europe + a David Lloyd tennis/hotel complex going next to the current sixways stadium.

The University also bucked national trends and became the fastest growing UK university for the 7th year in a row and had an increase of applications by 9% in 2011/12 which means the city is only going to grow.

For a city of 90,000 it punches well above it's weight I feel and it's location and geography is great.

River Severn, Malvern Hills and easy access to places like Ledbury or Birmingham.

Worcesters skyline is pretty decent to coming in from Shrub Hill.

Lots of spires and churches. This doesn't show them all but it's the best I could find easy.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajk/234389636/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Loved Worcester, good to hear there is alot of development there, saw this thing, not sure if i like it or not

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7204/6876870755_00deb531b0_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/21732688@N03/6876870755/)

What stuck me is there are some real prime development sites, most notable directly across from the cathedral! Not sure what would most fit in there if it were to be developed (reconstruction/bold new architecture):

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=worcester&hl=en&ll=52.189675,-2.219884&spn=0.001274,0.003484&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=20.193763,57.084961&hnear=Worcester,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=52.189675,-2.219884&panoid=63qgK9shKdMGm1AyT2XCLQ&cbp=12,56.16,,0,-0.83

Great pictures of Worcester, as much as I like seeing the pics of Liverpool Manc and Leeds I would like to see more of the forgotten Britain, places I must admit, I haven't much knowledge about.

These places are what make the UK a nice place to live, as there are hundreds of them only miles away from cities such as Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow etc.

Ive allways like old timber-framed buildings and its a pity not many are about.
Never been to Ledbury but its not to far away so i my have to take a visit one of these weekends.

There are lots of timber framed buildings about, although ive only really noticed alot of them in the south of the UK, further north you tend to get more stone buildings. Though i may be wrong in this.

Thanks everyone for the compliments

Glasgow is hardly better preserved than Manchester or Liverpool. I could post the pictures of the many areas that were bulldozed for redevelopment or for the M8 etc.

Sure we have well preserved areas of tenements, such as the West End, and the Southside. However I'm sure there are many well preserved areas of terraces in Manchester or Liverpool as well.

So I would say they are equally badly preserved...

^^ Worth remembering that Liverpool not only had the waves of slum clearances and madcap road schemes like Glasgow, it was also heavily bombed during the war, including the city centre.

Pretty grim photo from a pretty grim day (weather wise), but I was walking down Deansgate on my way to Urbis when I was met with 2 or 3 people taking pictures and pointing. I don't think anyone would really think New York in it's entirety could be mistaken for Manchester in it's entirety, but there are quite clear comparisons to be drawn between somewhere like the Lower East Side in Manhattan and the Northern Quarter in Manchester.

The street patterns, age, styles and urban form are somewhat similar. I don't really see how someone could deny such a thing.

http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx330/Glaswegian13/GlasgowGordonStreet.jpg

My brother emailed the above photo to me at the weekend. He took it from the old Borders bookshop looking along Gordon Street. It brought to mind the following piece by Bill Bryson in his book Notes From A Small Island:

'I remember when I first came to Glasgow in 1973...and being profoundly stunned at how suffocatingly dark and soot-blackened the city was. I had never seen a place so choked and grubby. Everything in it seemed black and cheerless. In the subsequent years Glasgow has gone through a glittering and celebrated transformation. Scores of old buildings in the city centre have been sandblasted and lovingly buffed, so that their granite surfaces gleam anew...'

You said it, Bill.

Glasgow - the city that washed its face.

Well I'm about to bring this down a notch or two.. A little meander round some hidden industrial streetscapes in Manchester that haven't been shown in here before. The first is Back Turner Street in the Northern Quarter and contains some neat (probably) late 18thC workers cottages, looking E:

The cottages in the photo above are now the backs of shops on Thomas Street so don't have their own character. The white house in the first pic only a few years ago looked like this:

Hungry? I saw it, fully renovated, for sale as a house a year or so ago. Going for about £200,000 I think. Next is Harter Street in the Gay Village:

I like the inter-building staircase in the first 2 photos.

I love that there are these well preserved streetscapes in Manchester that are not in the least gentrified. In fact the gorgeous warehouse on the near right in the last photo is completely derelict, and some enterprising u/ers have managed to photograph it inside:

Love it. The building at the end of the street in the last photo is a fairly handsome ex power station:

Loving the industrial stuff in Manchester!

March 11th, 2012, 04:56 AM
Glad you enjoyed it. Some non-industrial stuff now with a pic representing 591 years of Mancunian architects and architecture. (All the modern stuff in shot, at least, was designed by Mancunians - ISA and Roger Stephenson. I guess no individuals as such designed the medieval buildings.):

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6824052446_42458fdc34_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/carlf18/6824052446/)

Interestingly both the modern Mancunian architects exhibited above, as I actually did for a few weeks, studied architecture in Liverpool. So there's a bit of fuel to that particular myth. :poke:

Liked those Hull pics, an underrated City that suffered major bombing and destruction in wartime that has some fine looking buildings left. Some of the pics looked like classy parts of York or Harrogate, but those narrow old Victorian streets with Dutch style(?) buildings and Warehouses look most impressive. Glasgae looking good too

Hmm, wouldn't say "poor", exactly ...

From my Geography coursework;

- The Trafford Centre catchment area is larger and more populated than any other regional shopping centre in the UK and comprises 5 million people within a 45-minute drive time, with a total potential retail expenditure of £11.6 billion

- They're 11,500 free parking spaces, over 200 stores, six nationally renowned anchor stores, Europe's largest food court, a 20 screen cinema, Lazer Quest, a bowling alley, dodgems and an arcade.

- Over 8,000 people, including 430 Trafford Centre staff, are employed at the centre.

- The Trafford Centre currently attracts over 30 million visits annually.

- Over 3,500 coaches visit annually bringing more than 100,000 people to the centre.

- The Trafford Centre's Odeon cinema is the busiest in the UK and attracts an average of 28,500 customers a week.

The Trafford Centre is hideous and a shining example of tackiness. I don't care how many people it has in its catchment area, how many coaches visit or how many people buy stuff from the place, it's still absolutely disgusting and I have no plans to visit it again.

I wouldn't class it as Streetscape, it's indoors mostly. Anyway it's all very tacky looking...

Oh and it's not the busiest cinema in the UK, think you'll find that's the Cineworld on Renfrew St in Glasgow, thank you very much!

Money can't buy taste.

Its terrible and already beginning to look outdated despite the fact its based on architecture from thousands of years ago!!

I'm not denying it's successful as a retail destination but thats the only decent element. If the interior is really something to marvel at then you would see it replicated in Shopping centers across the UK, but it isn't.

Go to Manchester town hall and look at the interior then you realize how cheap the Trafford center looks, better yet head to VQ...

I think they designed the place with that in mind, as an already aged look won't age as much as shopping centres designed in a more contemporary style, for instance, the Tricorn Centre.

They've failed in that sense.

An example been this image posted. If they were successful in creating the style of architecture it wouldn't be reminiscent of a 60s shopping center.

@ arron I agree about Trafford centre, very American style of shopping, not for me, infact I feel its like a piece of Vegas been dropped in Manchester, But the dome is very impressive from inside, if just for the scale of it, still tacky though

The Chopin statue was revealed last year and paid for by the Polish community in the city, to commemorate a time he was apparently in the city as a bit of diplomacy. Unfortunately it is a really bad piece of sculpture.

This image demonstrates why we need a massive overhaul and rationalisation of street furniture here. Not sure how much this can claim to be a streetscape photo, but I can see a ship in the image- but I had to look beyond all those signs and lamposts to see it! Get rid of the clutter!

Grainger Street is a good example of what our cities need to aim for I think. Lamposts mounted from buildings, minimal furniture at street level.

I think the amount of clutter seen on that photograph is down to how busy the street is - in terms of traffic - and where the camera has been positioned. Having been down that road several times in the past, I don't think it's that bad for street clutter.

But hopefully you can see what I'm trying to say. There's no buildings in the foreground of that picture- only really one significant structure. But look at how much clutter your eyes have to work through before you get to the ship.

Where there are three signs on top of each other- why not just rationalise into one sign? This isn't a criticism of Liverpool, I recognise it's a problem all over the country.

If it's not streetscape, why are you complaining about street furniture? Whilst I agree there are too many signs down there, the use of a long focal length makes those in the picture above look as though they're closer together than they are. http://www.photozone.de/focal-length-and-perspective#

The result of heritage busybodies interfering with the design, they want new development to intentionally look bland so as not to overshadow the older stuff. The building above, One Park West, had its tower reduced in size, which messed up the proportions, and the block on the left lost its cool slanty cladding.

VQ in Leeds is a fantastic awe inspiring shopping centre unlike anything else we have in the UK

The VQ is, but then I'm not really sure that most would refer to it as a shopping centre.

If you are referring to the pleasantly airy and architecturally fairly interesting Victorian street brutally violated and toxified by metal poles and a pointy, charmless and heavy handed roof in the name of overpriced, multinational knicker and coffee shop chains I would have to personally confess that my awe has always remained stoutly uninspired.

Which coffee shop chain are you referring to?

If you don't like modern architecture, perhaps you'd prefer the Corn Exchange or Kirkgate Market.

I used to like the corn exhange when it had independent vintage retailers and the like a few years ago. I've never been a big fan of it's bunker-like exterior TBH though.

I do like modern architecture - just not when it is (literally) bolted on tastelessly to Victorian stone buildings.

The Market is fantastic, although Bury, Stockport and Barnsley are as good (if not better) in my experience.

Having said that though, Leeds. It's good for shoppingTM.

I can't agree. The best architecture is that which combines 21st century innovation with historic grandeur.

Chippy little bleeder aren't you? Still, I'd love to hear how those pictures of the County Arcade (also part of the Victoria Quarter) which you posted under in any way match that description?

I'm fairly sure Queen Victoria Street is Edwardian as well.

21st century innovation with historic grandeur.

Sounds quite epic for what is in truth a fairly nice victorian/edwardian street with heavy set steel poles and a glass roof bolted into the sides of the buildings (IMO tastelessly).

To say it's 21st century, the add-ons are also starting to look a bit dated IMO.

Leeds No.1

If you look, they're not bolted to the sides of the building at all but carry over the top of the facades to be bolted to the roof. If you took it down there would be no harm to the buildings.

Anyway, it's rather helpful that there are two similar streets in Leeds to compare.

Leicester

A fairly overlooked and underrated city in many regards, this city could do with a shout out.

Though the city is 'blessed' by the odd carbuncle or twelve and there is an overlying shabbiness in certain quarters, notably toward Belgrave, and by the railway station, none of these issues hide or detract from the fact that the city still has a surprising and extensive wealth of attractive streets and architecture; almost/arguably the best out of all the major cities in the Midlands (architecturally speaking).

They're definitely two completely different patterns though, aren't they?

Maybe you can see the "skeleton" of the upper half at some times of day when the sun shines on it? Idk. I'll have a look today
