A five star hotel will be built in a -65 meter pit in TianMaShan, Shanghai.
21F (2 floors below water, 2 floors on the ground)
from -65m to 15m
with various entertainment and sports facilities.

The pit once was a quarry, and then a trash field.

Three years ago, the enviroment was improved, and this year the construction will begin.

I think it will be cool to sleep in the lowest floors which are underwater... I guess it will need quite tough glass... and better some beautiful fishes swimming by...

I like the waterfall very much too. However I wonder after the water falls into the pit, how it gets out of it... :D

I'm not worried that the water will fill the pit, since like Mosaic said, it's just an irrigation canal...

So they are actually going to build this? I think it would be incredibly original and well worth the money to have such a unique piece of architecture in such an unorthodox place for a building.

Well... Thanks for some nice comments...So many questions so here is an update of where we are:

1 First things first - The concept has been designed by a British architect based in with assistance from a chinese architectural team...
I have lived in HK for few years and worked in Dubai and for past 5 years on projects in China (one of them - TEDA 'pile of boxes' towers.)

2 The amazing renderings were done by Crystal - 3D visualisation company in Shanghai and the wonderful team of Chinese architects in the Shanghai office of Atkins China contributed to the success of the project.

3 Site is near Songjiang - about 35Km from Shanghai city centre and well connected by road and rail transport. It is and established tourist destination with the She Shan observatory and other attractions.

4 Yes it will be built and the target completion has always been quoted as end 2009 .We are just about to restart the design development and detailed design.(should be any moment now). I have met with the client end September and everything is on track...

1st underground five-star hotel to open in Shanghai

Shanghai plans to build the country's first underground five-star hotel in southeastern Songjiang District. The hotel will be located in a 100-meter-deep pit near Sheshan Hill.

The hotel, part of a development announced yesterday, will be built in an abandoned quarry beside Tianma Hill, which is about 10 kilometer away from Sheshan Hill, the Youth Daily reported today. Currently, there is a lake in the bottom of the quarry pit.

It will have two floors above sea-level while the remaining 19 floors will be lower than sea-level attached to the wall of the pit. It will have an underwater restaurant and cafe.

The story didn't explain if the underground rooms will have windows.

Expected to be open to the public by the end of 2010, the hotel will have more than 400 rooms. But all the rooms will be above the lake water level, the report said.

Construction designers said they will set up spa rooms, restaurants, and other entertainment facilities on the 18th underground floor while the 19th underground floor will be home to offices and luxury suites, the report added.

The top two floors will host the hotel lobby, conference facilities, restaurants, entertainment clubs and exhibition halls, the report added.

Along with the hotel, the development program includes a three-star hotel and four service apartment buildings around the Sheshan Hill area, the report said.

The hotel is not underwater but at the edge of the pit/cliff.

The hotel has number of names: which have been used - originally we called the concept 'The Hanging Gardens Hotel' and it was also called 'The Waterworld' The operator is being signed up as we speak so the name may change again....

with regards to the underwater part of the hotel it is based on the reverse of the Aquarium technlogy utilising large acrylic windows inset into waterproof concrete structure as is done with large aquaria tanks. Depending on the depth and the size of the windows these can be upto 250mm thick.

[QUOTE=oliver999;16102190]this building started in OCT,2007!!!!
QUOTE]

There are many myths and hype flying around about this building so it is important to set the record straight.

They have started construction of the Shimao Wonderland (Shimao Wonderland is the name of the whole development in the Songjiang area that includes a theme park, residential units and another 3 star hotel)... that is what the gorund breaking ceremony was for.The 1st stage of the construction will be the infrastructure for the land in which the hotel and other parts of the development will be located.

The hotel itself is still being designed. There is still detailed design/construction information to be produced but the target is to complete the building before end 2010.

The intention is to have underwater rooms in the 2 lowest levels both guest rooms of the hotel and the public areas including a restaurant.

Thanks for your interest

I thought this project would be located in some existing waterfall or something whereas they would simply integrate the man-made structure into it. They'd start from scratch I see.

this is quite unique project but location is terrible. it looks like a closed mine or something like that

What a stupid comment, the building is designed around the location, not the other way around. Without the quarry this would just be a hotel, rather than a hotel in a quarry. The only thing unusual and special about this is the quarry.

---------------------------------------
Construction Starts On China's First "Sunken Hotel"
August 13, 2009

Construction recently started on Songjiang Hotel, China's first "sunken hotel", which is to be built in a water-filled quarry in Songjiang, Shanghai.
The quarry, which is 89 meters below sea level, is at the east of Hengshan inside the Shanghai Sheshan National Holiday Resort. The hotel will be constructed in accordance with five-star standards.

The 21-floor hotel will have two floors under water, two floors above ground-level and 17 floors between the water surface and ground-level. The 19 floors above the water will include a presidential view room, standard guestrooms, an underwater restaurant and cafe. All the 400 guestrooms will have sightseeing balconies to enjoy views of a waterfall opposite to the hotel.

For anyone who still remembers this project, construction won't start until the EXPO is over according to news reports. The city authorities are assessing the emergency evacuation & fire safety system for the project, since it is different from other hotels in Shanghai--well, you need to get up instead of down in case of emergence.

Not much update per se, but someone did manage to get down to the bottom to take a few pictures with the help from the workers on site:

Great news, finally the construction start.

http://shanghaiist.com/2012/04/04/ground_broken_on_shanghais_amazing.php

By Bridget O'Donnell

A few years ago, British engineering firm Atkins won the rights to design an extravagant hotel deep within a 100-metre pit in Shanghai's Songjiang District near the base of Tianmashan Mountain.

Construction on the Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland finally commenced last month, and the hotel is scheduled to open in late 2014 to early 2015.

The complex is part of a larger 428,000 square-meter theme park.

The hotel will have a total of 19 floors — three of which will be above ground and the remaining 16 extending into the bottom of the pit. It will hold about 380 rooms which are expected to start at about RMB2,000 (US$320) per night. The building will also feature an underwater restaurant.

Shanghai Shimao Property Group has so far invested RMB3.5 million (US$555 million) into the entire Shanghai Shimao Wonderland site.

Yes it has really restarted, completion is planned for end 2014... Bit more realistic. There is a definite construction schedule and although there is still some designing to be done... (landscape and interiors), the steel structure should start soon. National Geographic are negotiating to produce a Megastructeres TV programme, this is now almost agreed and filming should start soon... You can follow the progress on Twitter ' @songjiangquarry '. If interested...

Few corrections are in order.
Yes - it is an old abandoned stone quarry - a man made hole. There are no waterfalls there as yet. We are planning to create one opposite the hotel... This is an example of clever use of a 'brownfield' site that nobody knew what to do with and improve its landscape.
- hotel has 2 levels above the ground level and 17 below. Currently only one level is under water and will contain some guest rooms and some public areas and restaurants. They will all face an aquarium.
We are meeting a National Geographic production company and the client to progress the Megastructures T V programme. You can follow our progress on Twitter @songjiangquarry

Another update. As Atkins are no longer involved in this project - Quarry Associates Design Studio has been formed to complete the final design tasks and see the hotel to its construction. Currently the landscape scheme is being finalised with the observation walkway (similar to Grand Canyon in US) as a priority. Hoping to complete the facade design soon too. However the project is still over the budget and another area reduction exercise is under way. The site will get very busy in the new year as the superstructure should start then. National Geographic have now signed contract with the client for the Megastructures TV programme so everything is on course for the filming to start soon too... The producers would like to catch some of the Quarry blasting on film .. Should be spectacular...
