SteelCity32 May 22nd, 2003, 08:41 PM nice skyline at night, and natural settings. 7.5/10
james2390 May 23rd, 2003, 02:01 AM nice, 8
puer May 23rd, 2003, 04:29 AM I give it about a 7.5. Portland seems to be adding a lot of highrises all over the Westside. I'll soon have to upgrade it to an 8.5. I especially like the 4th and 8th photos, DubbaG. Keep the great photos coming. We used to go to the top of the Pacific Building and picnic on the rooftop garden. Back then the Greyhound depot was where the Hilton Hotel addition now stands and there was a great view of the skyline from up there.
puer May 24th, 2003, 01:13 AM DubbaG, I suppose the little garden is still up there. I haven't been up there since the '70's. You take the elevator to the top floor then walk the stairway to the roof. It's (or was) a small sitting area with a Mediterranean feel to it. You might as well check it out and see if it's still there.
X-seed 4000 May 24th, 2003, 01:23 AM I like it, it just seems a bit small. 7.5/10
puer May 24th, 2003, 03:29 AM DubbaG, maybe you know the answer to this. How come when Portland's tallest buildings are listed those condos at the south end of the Portland Center are never included? I know they have presidential names like Lincoln and Madison. And at least the tallest one looks taller than the older apartment towers built in the mid-60's. I think the condo towers were added in the '70's.
I was just wondering. They're in your photo from Terwilliger Plaza.
DubbaG May 24th, 2003, 05:52 AM puer, I really have no idea dude. Maybe they're just so fugly that nobody even wants to acknowledge thier existence?
DubbaG May 24th, 2003, 12:28 PM Here's 2 more I took today.

BG918 June 8th, 2003, 02:54 AM Nice Pacific Northwest-looking skyline but not much in the way of height or interesting buildings. I would think Portland would have more scrapers, and good looking ones too, considering the size of the city/metro (1.9 million), and all the "smart growth" there. But what's there isn't bad, and I'm sure it will grow a lot more in the coming years. 7/10
puer June 8th, 2003, 05:52 PM DubbaG-Did you ever go to the top of the Pacific Building to see if the little garden is still up there?
tocoto June 9th, 2003, 01:52 AM The skyline is small in height and extent 5/10. The natural surrounding are beautiful and I bet its's a great city to live in.
puer June 9th, 2003, 02:55 AM That's the building that originaly was called the Georgia Pacific Building, right? It was Portland's first building to rise over 30 stories. I never made it to the top. I don't know why. Probably because I had long hair at that time and business people always seemed suspiciuos of long-haired kids. Portland has always been a tolerant city but I think serious business people thought long hair meant "lazy, dirty hippies".
I remember when the original Standard Plaza was being built. I was about 12 and just beginning to explore my hometown's downtown. The Hilton was being built at the same time and it took me a little while to realize they weren't the same building. After the Standard Plaza was finished I used to go up and visit the Skidmore, Owings and Merril office. They had a scale model of downtown Portland that was all in an off-white. The buildings SOM designed were in pure white so the client or visitor could see what kind of buildings they were designing. Personally, I thought their
buildings all looked alike - the Hilton, Standard Plaza, Georgia Pacific, the Edith Green Federal building and I think they also did the Portland Center.
Did you know there were once plans for a Portland Center-type project on the Eastside called Coliseum Gardens? There was a big billboard that stood on the site with architectural drawings of the planned development. It was just southeast of the Memorial Coliseum. I think the east border was MLK (then called Union Ave.) One of the buildings actually got built. It's that brick retirement home near Holiday Park Hospital. I don't think anything else was ever built. They must've run low on money or something. The plans included quite a few high rises and would've given downtown's skyline quite a bit of competition. The Lloyd district has actually developed a second skyline over the years but it's a lot more spread out than Coliseum Gardens would've been.
I'll be interested in hearing what you find on top of those buildings, DubbaG.

Portland is a fabulous and beautiful city in a wonderful location
The Koin is a landmark structure
there appears to be some rather attractive small older buildings
most of the skyline is rather boxy and boring though
DubbaG June 18th, 2003, 09:30 AM I finally made it up to the roof of the Pacific building this morning. I had to climb some ladders onto some restricted spots to get any views. Here are all the pics I took.

The Messiah June 19th, 2003, 04:18 PM 7.5/10 There are quite some beautiful buildings over there.

teshadoh June 24th, 2003, 07:58 PM What I love about downtown Portland isn't the skyline - it's how pedestrian oriented the streets are. In fact skyscrapers are not even allowed to develop in downtown Portland - only midrises as shown.
I like skylines, but in most cities - especially Atlanta - the skyscraper has devoured downtowns & turned them into ghost towns. So many people in Atlanta drive into the parking deck of a skyscraper, shop, eat in the skyscraper mall or plaza & never go outside into downtown. Besides the fact they might look attractive from a distance, up close they are extremely dull looking.

qwerty1324 July 17th, 2003, 11:22 PM Portland may not have super tall highrises or the extreme densities or insane nightlife but it still a very pleasant city. Portland's attributes are quality of life. I make to Portland once in a while. Portland is one of the few cities in the U.S. that you don't need a car. I fly into Portland catch a light rail to downtown and tour the city on the MAX (light rail), get off anywhere and walk around. Portland is very walkable in the downtown area and many of the surrounding neighborhoods.
Overall I like Portland for its natural beauty, relaxing atmosphere, and its urban areas. I see that Portland is continually adding to its rail system! Good for Portland, keep up the good work on everything.
pwright1 July 18th, 2003, 06:08 AM 7.5
Not many skyscrapers but once you set your foot down in downtown Portland the excitement begins. For one, its the cleanest downtown I've ever set foot in. Two, you can shop till you drop. From Nordstrom, Meir and Frank, and Saks Fifth Avenue department stores, to Tiffany, Nike, J Crew and countless other stores, nice restaurants and coffee places, downtown Portland is very impressive. Very beautiful city indeed.

I almost moved here 5 years ago, but I picked Minneapolis instead. (Don't regret it at all. Love Minneapolis:love: )
Portland looks beautiful. The setting is amazing and the density is incredible for a relatively new American city. The planners are top notch here. Strange that Portland and Minneapolis both have a very successful regional governing councils with power. I wish other American cities would forget their politics and start one of these. It has done wonders for these two cities.
National Arbor Day Foundation would love this photo. Looks rather breatheable.

WinterHeart September 6th, 2004, 10:46 AM I moved to Portland a year ago. It's a nice pit-stop for people who aren't yet ready for the big city. We all seem to agree that it is a cute little city. Little being the operative word. Most of Oregon has height codes because the people who live here like their mountain views. In Bend, where my parents live, buildings may not exceed 3 stories. Portland's tallest building is only 42 stories, but it dwarfs the rest of the state.
Portland is very green, having trees lining the streets of most of the West Side. The East Side isn't as nice. I don't know who in these forums lives here besides me, but from what I read of the earlier posts, Portland has had some changes since it was last talked about.
Thonix January 2nd, 2005, 09:09 PM Looks nice, I definitely wanna go there whenever I hit the States. It's been stuck in my head ever since I saw "Freddy Got Fingered." 7/10.

MIMICA January 3rd, 2005, 02:51 AM The skyline is allright, but the surrouding beauty is better...I give it an 8.:)

LouisvilleJake January 5th, 2005, 12:39 AM 8.5/10 I LOVE Portland, best city in the Pacific Northwest.
The river, the mountains, the environment, the way the skyline is situated in it all, I adore it. Portland is a city I wouldn't mind relocating to someday. (Much better than my former home in Klamath Falls, Oregon, HAHA)
i_am_hydrogen January 13th, 2005, 09:29 AM 6.5/10 - Portland's skyline has very little height and few buildings, but it has really high density relative to the amount and height of its buildings. The other two things I like: First, the architectural diversity. Second, I love how the streets downtown are lined with those lush trees. A lot of cities don't have that, either.
VanSeaPor March 20th, 2005, 01:05 AM 8/10. Needs taller buildings.

lancetop February 2nd, 2006, 01:09 PM Portland is a lovely lovely city, on a scenic site and in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. On the street level the city is splendid. A very cool place, so many nice people.
But the skyline of the city always seemed underdeveloped to my eye. A height restriction has been in place for many years, and what I see as a lackluster skyline is a result of that. The individual buildings built from 1980 until now are mostly uninteresting. But when you're in Portland, the downtown area is a wonderful place to be on the street level:)

SayHelloToMyLilFrein July 1st, 2006, 08:01 PM very beautiful location and sorroundings, very clean and perfect functioning city.has nicest metro rails and the most parks in the country.the skyline isnt really much boring and no talls. but it has its charms such as china town for example. Though its not that big of a city its still large enough to live conveniently without dealing with out of control crime and traffic such as Miami, new york, Los angeles, and chicago.I gave portland a 10.

Maxim98 December 6th, 2006, 02:39 AM Beautiful area. I've always been a fan of Portland, but it could really benefit from a few slightly taller, modern buildings. Parts of the skyline are a bit boxy and dated. Still a remarkable place!
6.5/7ish
Pruim March 3rd, 2007, 05:02 PM Lovely setting indeed, skyline is a bit 'odd' 5/10
NorthDallas March 8th, 2007, 08:24 PM The skyline is very "small" in height but makes up for it in density and placement. I give the skyline a 6 and the city and surroundings a 10 so I gave an overall 8.
Living in Portland part time is amazing. Like someone said before, the hills and mountains are our true skyline. Looking at some of the pictures where buildings are surrounded by huge green trees at the bases show its ability to breath as a city. It truly is one of the most livable cities in the world. The city cares about the people and it shows. What a beautiful place to live!

BUT
This is about skylines, and Portland is pretty sucky in that department, 5.5, All of the worst buildings line the waterfront, the Pearl and Brewery blocks are nice, but low rise. You don't go to Portland for a great skyline, instead, you go because it is in a stunning natural setting, lots of great neighborhoods, great transit, walkable and the most livable larger city in America, or even North America.

Portland's skyline leaves much to be desired....BUT, it is also one of the most livable and walkable cities, and the transit has no match for the size of the city. If this were about urban living I would give it a 9/10.

Pardon my enquiry, but how the hell does one quote Benjamin Franklin and Karl Max/Vlad Lenin in the same signature? That's like putting a quote from Hitler next to a quote from a Rabbi.

Portland is a lovely city but it's skyline underwhelms for a metro of over 2 million.
