Unfortunately it must have been last updated about October 2009 because the shard's first steels arent even in place,.. but WOW! time to stop bothering with making sketchup models of scrapers me thinks!
Very cool. It's quite a responsive user interface. They have a 3d model of southwark towers though on the map view :old:

^ god I can't wait for the time they pack up that makeshift southend-on-park lane. Maybe i'm getting grumpy and old, but it represents preety must the worst aspects of xmas for me - tacky decorations, insincere joviality, overpriced 'seasonal gifts', extortionate seasonal attractions...

Yes, hopefully they will update it to allow a lower angle of view. It only seems to work with convex buildings- any concave details are lost- presumably its a displacement map

Does give a very good view of the Riverside South and St George's Wharf tower sites :)

Would be great to use this in a video game!

Went there on New Years Day, i went on that 66metre tower drop ride and i saw a glimpse of the Shard, but 59 metres up, you can't bring a cam up there, so my MP4 was unacceptable.

Also 1 year since those BASE jumpers went off Burj Khalifa, as we were talking of fireworks and jumpers.

Plus welcome Core Rising and sweeeeeeeeeeet camera quality, makes it look real, what do you use?

^ That winter wonderland place IS pretty tacky, but I found it a great place for a spot of 'street' photography.

What do I use? This shot was taken on a Canon EOS 5D with a Canon 28 - 135mm lens at the 135mm end and then cropped a little. I need a proper (longer) telephoto lens though.

the blue thing is the box for the concrete floors it will rise as the floors are poured.
does anyone have any idea how long it takes to pour a floor? i guess the fact the concrete box will have to change shape with every floor will effect the speed

Not sure, but I can't imagine it would be as fast as the steel floors. I imagine laying all the rebar for the slabs takes time. That said, I suppose the columns are all precast?

This image reminds me of those old 1920's shots of that tower being constructed.

To be honest, in comment to the Jan '09 to '11 comparison I would sure hope that the progress would be at this level. However, knowing England it often isn't. And I'm so excited that The Shard is at this level of construction. This is the most highly anticipated skyscraper in England in, well...maybe ever. And I think that the next few months will be the most exciting for The Shard.

When you climb the Rockefeller Tower there is an opportunity for you to be photographed in the traditional "girder sitting" pose - picture is available in sepia for added authenticity. We have a nice family group, our best NYC souvenir.

Cheers. There has been steady progress since the new year on erecting the hydraulic screens for the slab-pouring, so maybe not all that slow. I think maybe we've been spoilt by how fast it's all risen so far! :) Plus, there seemed to be lots going on inside.

Does anyone know what the CantiDecks are being used for. Didn't see anyone on the one in the last photo.

I don't think they will do that until the steel catches up unfortunately, i would have liked shard to be crowned tallest in europe nice and early :)
The glass is probably the best outcome of this building for me, even if this was just some 140m boxy building with the same glass as the shard, i think i would really like it. Renzo Piano is a true genius and inspiration.
any signs of the concrete floors going in yet? or will we not be able to see them.

1 question for you people, how many floors will these support things for the concrete be here? THanks in advance.

Why are the floors going to be concrete on the upper levels? Won't that make it top-heavy though?

Building regulations for the habitable part of the building (hotel & apartments) require the floors to be concrete rather than steel for sound-proofing and fire containment. The building is currently at the first floor of hotel bedrooms. I don't think the concrete is significantly heavier than steel.

Aww, the radiator floors were what made the Shard nice and pointy. If they just stick standard HVAC condensors on the roof, it'll look all stubby at the top.

The glass frame continues upwards to create the shard effect. My only concern is the darkness of whatever is exposed to the elements - a black top to this tower, like Tower 42, the Gherkin and Willis would be absolutely disastrous.

This looks to be a fully sealed building so it depends on where the fresh air intakes to the ventilation plant are located. Also I dont think boilers churn out toxic gas - mostly water vapour and CO2. On cold days you might not have much of a view though !

How can you possibly say this compromises the view of St Pauls. Ignoring for the moment the fact that the juxtaposition between old and new brings out the best of both, people have very short memories. The plot the Shard is being built on used to contain Southwark Towers and, right next door, London Bridge House which, with Guys included, produced an unremittingly drab slab of a backdrop to St Pauls.

The improvement is unquestionable.

The Parish Church of the British Empire. A land mine crashed through the roof of St Pauls but failed to explode. They put it in a horse and cart and towed it to Hackney Marshes and blew it up. The crater was still there a few years ago. Imagine doing Air Raid Patrol on that roof in September 1940, armed with just a stirrup pump and a bucket of sand as the bombers loom over head. I think I'd start crying.

Anyway, stunning renders, and it looks like the finance is agreed and Sam Mendes directs the new Bond film, bet you a pint of whelks The Shard features somehow, possibly in a scene where Bond beats some ruffians up like in that other Bond film where he beat ruffians up.

p.

Thanks for the link and opportunity to post an slightly off topic pic! It was a 500kg timebomb and it landed outside the front of the church. A 2000kg landmine bomb landed in the Deans yard ans buried itself 27ft in the mud. It took three days to dig it out!

Two 50 kg bombs went through the roof in separate raids. One destroyed the high alter
http://i52.tinypic.com/seruqe.jpg
and one exploded near the transept punching a whole through to the crypt.
http://i56.tinypic.com/28bz385.jpgThe news was not disclosed to the world at the time. (10 October 1940 and 17 April 1941)

On the 29th December 1940, 28 incendiaries hit the church. One lodged in the timber frame of the dome (incendiaries were designed to be heavy enough to puncture roofs and burn at ultra high temperatures to start a roof fire) A brave watchman crawled along the beam it had lodged on and knocked it to the ground where it was extinguished.

Too me the Shard pays homage to its grace. I cant envisage another building of our time that would work so well in its field of view. I am not overstating when I declare that IMO, not only does it not detract from this monument...it actually adds something to its value and status (bearing in mind this is a render with presumed perfect light)

All of Northcliffe Media's (owners of the Daily Mail, ES, and hundreds of other local papers) websites are called "This is <place>" rather than the same name as the local paper. "This is Bristol" is the online Bristol Evening Post, and "This is London" is the online Evening Standard.

These renders are great, but as they seem to be the first to show The Shard without the radiator the top of it now has an unfinished look - the empty 'floors' peeking out from the 'broken' glass.

A pity they can't put something in the place of the radiators - the levels seem quite high so maybe even tress could go in there, as in the winter gardens.

http://www.futurelondon.com/storage/post-images/PR021_0010032_view04_800_cr01_final.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1293195086789

One thing that will need to be added, that the renders don't show, are red aircraft warning lights, as on other buildings. These will detract from the beauty of The Shard at night I think - rather than disappearing into the sky, the top will be marked by a flashing red light.

On the other hand, it would seem a gross waste of electricity to flood-light the inside of a non-functional void like that. I think some edge-lighting or soft interior lighting with LEDs might be a better low-carbon approach.

Is that something London City Airport asked for? Seems an unusual feature - any aircraft warning light now must be static red (the use of white strobes is being phased out because of recent ICAO rules).

I dont know to be honest, but wouldn't the Shard be more on the flightpath of Heathrow, rather than City airport, and Heathrows traffic will be flying far higher than Cities, Just a thought.

Surely the colour of the warning light shouldn't matter - a pilot, you would expect, is bright enough to realise a light is attatched to something and must therefore be avoided whether it be pink, white or green... :/

I’ll look forward to seeing how the screen system will work. With the floor plates reducing in scale every level, the screens would surly need to keep tight against the mega structure. They’d have to take out a few before it got to the top rite?

Great photo’s everyone. And as london_marcus say, I think we’ll see the concrete levels beginning to rise in two / three weeks.
