:gossip:

Cameras at the ready. Depending on the weather, once the last of the concrete has been poured at level 72, the stair core from 72-75 may be erected tonight.

The first construction above level 72 for some time and the start of the end...!

The stairs (like all of the others on the Shard) are made by those wonderful people at Atlas Ward (part of the Severfield-Rowen group)

So this is the first piece of the spire then? Prefabricated at Severfield-Reeve's Yorkshire factory.

Horrible thought however are there any improvements planned for the road that is practically touching the shard? A iconic landmark should surly have some protection from car/truck bombs etc?

If someone had that sort of idea, there's far more disruption to be had with the roads that run under London Bridge Station.

London is chock full of targets if you want to get worried about it.

Not getting worried about it, that's what those sort of people want us to feel. But I meant the shard as a target not London bridge station. A car looks as if it could practically be in the lobby :/

Notions like that would have been taken into consideration during the engineering and design phases. It's almost certainly been designed with truck bombs in mind. Post 1996 most tall buildings in the UK have... post 2001 even more attention has been paid.

This does suggest that I really do need to reserve judgement, as the top of the shard may well be the feature which makes it, more so than perhaps I acknowledged.

I prefer it from that angle, much more uniformed and interesting than the southern side, which will eventually be blocked by 100 Bishopsgate on the skyline. I've got no problem with that because closeup the southern side seems far better than it does from a distance.

It's not your imagination. The central 'core' of the staircase appeared yesterday and since then they've added the staircase frame (the bit that will carry the steps) so the structure on top suddenly appears wider. Today I watched them hoist a number of major steel verticals into place. They looked massive a ground level, but reduced to matchsticks once at the top of the tower. They seemed to drop them into place very quickly as I watched from One New Change! Sadly I think work was scuppered by the high winds and thunder storm. I was back at the site later in the day and there were more lovely crispy white steels awaiting installation. I think this will look dramatically different within a few days, weather permitting.

True. Firstly, the stair flights and landings were added to the outside of the stair frame (which will eventually contain a lift on the inside). Then the 4 main spire columns were erected around the stairs which will support the spire above the concrete core.

(see 'scalatrava89's pic below of the columns arriving...)

Haha yeah, that was incredibly annoying! For those who don't know, me, NCT, scalatrava and ill tonkso went to see the Shard on Saturday and we saw the crane preparing to pick a bit of steel up off the ground (or so we thought!) - we were there for about 15 minutes waiting to see a bit of steel being hoisted up into the air...then the crane was raised again, and nothing was on the end! Ah well, still got to visit the site and see some steel being delivered (scalatrava and I touched the steel, so our DNA will be on the Shard's spire now.)

I've never really considered this before but it must be the same for most skyscrapers, where does the rain go once it's hit the building? Is it a massive burden on the sewers or does it mostly evaporate before it gets down to ground level?

I've never really considered this before but it must be the same for most skyscrapers, where does the rain go once it's hit the building? Is it a massive burden on the sewers or does it mostly evaporate before it gets down to ground level?

The height doesnt effect how much rain falls on the building...

The cage lift thing that goes up the side, is the floor angled in it? or do the men inside lean towards the Shard as it rises?

It goes up at an angle doesn't it or are my eyes squiffy?

Doing some property inspections yesterday in East London, there's a road going into Lewisham where you get a brilliant view of the Shard, the city, and if you pan your head round, Canary Wharf, from a distance. The only problem was that for the first time that day, the traffic was actually moving, so I couldn't justify stopping in the road and taking a picture. Can someone who lives on such a road, please take a picture?
It does look incredibly imposing on the skyline, and you can see the stubbly top all over the place. I can't wait for it to be finished.

Whats it like down in London? It seems up here that there is not much media hype surrounding the shard, im suprised really with it being such a unique design not to mention the height.
Even people I know who work in construction have never heard of it, its a shame because this is the potential future landmark of the capital.

Some coverage in the media - but much less than may have been expected, either positive or negative. Heron went unnoticed and the Shard, for many, sems just another tall building - very surprising given how prominant it is on the skyline. Perhaps as it reaches it's full height it will gain more interest. Personally I suspect that the Gherkin will remain the peoples favourite - it seems to be held in some affection by almost everyone.

I am not too bothered about 'hype' yet..the building isn't even fully built and still on target for next spring. It could be seen as London's 'best kept secret' right now..The entire London Bridge Quarter (station refurb and The Place building next door) will look great and cannot be missed once complete! The Olympics will generate interest here too anyway, especially due to the connections between Stratford and London Bridge.. :)

I found the Shard far more interesting as it was being built. The rise of the core, the screens, cranes etc. I barely give it a second glance now and it's only the height that engenders any interest. :dunno:It needs something to break up the wall of glass, like the spiral on the Gherkin. As I look out the window the Gherkin draws the eye every time not the Shard.

I just like to look back on the early threads where this received its first steel columns. It's just like going back in time and I hope the cladding is as clean as it was then when it was first added - once the building is finished.

Strangely, I don't see it as a building, but more like a memorial or something you'd appreciate as you go by London Bridge or around London. Maybe because the surrounding buildings are clad in concrete, steel, bricks or a mixture of any of them.

However Guy's Hospital will need a serious reclad (hopefully from the render) to compliment the Shard and its elegance.

Once it is completed and fully lit up at night, it will get much more attention. It will become a London landmark, just as the Gherkin has become.

Lets hope that hemitage plaza gets cancelled!! :bash:

Why?! To my mind, you're either a fan of beautiful, high rise architecture or you're not. Where such buildings go up should not be an issue. For me, there's no place for petty nationalism when it comes to something I appreciate like this.

For what it's worth, however, it has all gone very quiet on the Hermitage Plaza front. Will probably go ahead in some form, but a height reduction is looking likely. The associated SSC thread has been dead for nearly 3 months now.

Gosh, looking at that view of London is depressing, all grey and packed full of dull looking building. Glad i'm a northerner.
- Stella, W.Yorkshire, 25/9/2011 19:20

Why was this monstrosity given planning permission? It is so ugly, no wonder the Italian architect won't build it in Italy, where horrors like this are not allowed.

Britain's highest ever crane is being put in place to complete London's Shard tower - offering a dramatic bird's eye view of the capital.

Workers will use the machine to complete what will be the tallest building in the European Union, near London Bridge.

When fully extended the crane will sit at 1,040ft (317 metres) above ground level - making it more than 20ft taller than the building's eventual peak.

The extraordinary piece of equipment will be used to complete the top 23 floors from a total of 95.
The Shard will become the 45th tallest in the world when it is completed in 2012.

Why is the crane suddenly getting so much coverage, it's been there for about 6 months.
The media never cease to amaze me, they are like lemmings, one paper writes an out of date story, the others just follow.

^^ That's my understanding too. I don't think the crane is at it's full height yet and I would have thought that they would have to extend it soon at the pace the spire is going up!

If its accurate, we can see that the crane is going to need a serious extension to be above the top of the spire

I thought it was because the crane had been raised again making it even higher?

TC7 was going to be raised some weeks ago and also last weekend, hence the media coverage. However, this was postponed again due to high winds.
Undoing all of the connection bolts and jacking up a crane 250m in the air needs to be done on a calm day and during a road closure weekend. Trying to match the two is going to be difficult...

A rather great diagram from Culwulla on the global forum. I have a feeling the height of the crown may be a little more accurate than Shardbaby's excellent efforts, which means that the Shard is close to being structurally complete.

Yep, one of my best friends is of that opinion. Thinks it's "just too big for London".

I wouldn't say she has extreme hatred for it, but she definitely doesn't like it.

That said, when we were students she didn't like the idea of the Olympics and I know she's applied for tickets now so...

It's too big for the area that it's in, everything around it is low-rise. It doesn't quite work for me yet from underneath at street level. Obviously that might change once the lobby and bottom floors are complete. From a distance, say across the river, it looks good, especially at night.

Yep everything is low rise around here…... Well apart from a 140m odd hospital tower and the U/C block that’s nearly 80m, the quite substantial railway station and viaducts, oh and the Quill tower which will be over 100m ;)

Guys is high-rise, I'll give you that much, but it's the only other tower in this otherwise low-rise area. I wouldn't call L.B. station and viaducts high-rise. Just admit the Shard is completely out of scale with the low rise nature of Southwark.

Was the crane jacked up today? Did anyone notice? They were waiting for a calm day and we certainly had that today, and for the rest of the week. Also looking at it now from the hill I live on in SE London (Netherby road) If the crane is 320m when fully up, then Shard Baby's diagram doesn't look far off.

You’re forgetting Southwark Towers the building the Shard replaced. Whilst only at 100m in height it wasn’t breathtaking, but tall never the less. Also New London Bridge House was around the 95m mark, so along with Guy’s 143m tower, this area has had high rise building for the last 40 years. As for street level, I’ve worked in Bermondsey for over 8 years and going east towards Crucifix Lane on St Thomas Street was just awful. This development along with that of London Bridge Station will transform it by opening up the viaducts to Tooley Street and help bring further investment to the area.

You've got to start somewhere. That's an old-as-time argument against ever building a first tower in a low-rise area anywhere.

Couldn't agree more. Tower 42 always looked to me like a New York skyscraper (more especially from childhood memories) but now looks insignificant next to the Gherkin (which doesn't look tall from a distance). Likewise, 1 Canada Square is now surrounded by similar height buildings.

Great photos, chest. The 4th one in particular doesn't seem real - like an artist's impression of the future - which happens to be now. :)

Nice photos, Chest - I was walking across London Bridge at evening rush hour as well, and thought how beautiful the Shard looked in the evening sunshine. I love the light at this time of year, and it really complements the Shard.

I've noticed that the crane hasn't really moved this week. Are they having to wait until it is extended until they can continue? Also, i thought there was a crane section in the loading bay at the weekend but when i went past last night there was nothing there, where else would they store it until it's installed?

the shard looks a bit plain jane to me. the detail on the spire might be key. without that it'd be a non-event in shanghai, etc. encouraging to have a "supertall" in london though.

Some pics from my way to work this morning again.

As there were a few tourists about taking photos, I thought I'd risk some snaps of the station concourse roof, which is coming along

http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j427/cybertects/Shard/20110930_0002.jpg

And, with access under the north side canopy, we have some new angles available, helped by an autumn morning's sunlight. While they're structurally different designs, the station roof and the canopies share a common design language. I love 'em :)

yeah i agree... i prefer leadenhall and the pinnacle over this.but i think that the spire will be the focal point on this building. with a nice big light on the top of it so that it stands out.
