great pic Chest.

Is it just me or have they used different glass at random points?

Perhaps they cleaned the glass at random points? :dunno:

Perhaps they cleaned the glass at random points? :dunno:

That's exactly what they've done just for testing.
There's not much point cleaning the whole thing whilst it's still under construction, bearing in mind it is absolutely filthy at the moment and will get filthy again from all the construction detritus up top.
When the glazing is all on and it gets its first full clean, this building will look like an actual shard of glass for the first time.

The river trip for Civil Engineering students which I attended last wednesday was hosting 4 engineers. One of them was involved in this project, so I asked her how they're going to disassemble the crane which is on top right now - she said they will put one little crane on the top of the Shard construction which will do the job. After it finish that, another crane will be assembled to remove the crane that removed the crane which we can see at the moment. It won't go forever obviously :D the last crane will stay there forever and will be used to clean the windows and to some repairs.
So I was wondering if that's the crane she was talking about :)

The crane is going to stretch out a long way because the Shard tapers!

I happened upon an interesting short artical by the company supplying lifts to the Shard. Seems London is a pioneering place for destination hall call control elevators where you book your journey at the entrance turnstiles. Wonder if they'll do on-line Apex tickets!

likin' the more london/city hall/shard combo. But too much glass and steel in this view - too sterile - maybe they could replace a couple of the foster riversides with something incorporating more natural materials...

Almost certainly for 'The Place' (ugh, lousy name)... All the remaining steels for the shard are pre-coated with a white protective paint. Plus there's no more concrete to be poured at the shard. Lots of rebar needed for the mammoth core at the place though.

I'm not a member of that forum so can't post my reactions.

The one thing you should do in a traffic collision is not say 'SORRY', as it implies you're to blame. The lorry driver probably knew this. In that article it reads; "she said that she thought she had made eye contact with the driver at the lights". Were the lights on green? doesn't say, but I expect they were, which would that the cyclist was in the wrong. Making eye contact is good, but it should never mean 'go'. No driver has the authority to direct traffic, it's dangerous, as this case proves.

spindrift
October 18th, 2011, 12:45 PM
We have no idea who was at fault, although usually it is the driver at fault in lorry/cyclist collisions. Catriona Patel was killed by a drunk lorry driver who was chatting on a mobile, Emma Foa was killed by a lorry driver who was checking his paperwork whilst driving. Should lorries that size be driven in the rush hour without an escort?

scalatrava89
October 18th, 2011, 12:48 PM
^^ Hmm In this day and age, I don't think companies can afford that. Thought if it was to become law, then maybe yes. Wasn't there a cyclist killed earlier this year by a truck travelling from the Shard site?

Those steels aren't for the shard, they're for The Place. powerder coating colour is wrong, cross section is wrong for the shard...

If X = the number of glass panels on the Shard
And Y = the number of window cleaning units
And C = total number of cleaners all window cleaning units can hold
And T = time it takes 1 cleaner to clean one panel
And Z = time taken to reposition window cleaning unit

How long would it take, continuously working, to clean the Shard.

It would take (XT/YC)+ZYn, where n is the number of times each window cleaning unit needs to be repositioned. Why?

Go to Tamnag Thai in Crystal Palace for the best Thai I've had outside the Far East. Then cross the road, preferably at night, look down one of the streets that over looks town and it will take your breath away, assuming the chillies haven't done so already. There are great views along Sydenham Hill, or get yourself the Horniman Gardens and it's all there. CP park looks the other way, still nice views though.

Looking at the close up photos of the base, it seems a shame that there isn't some sort of water collection mechanism. The Shard on a rainy day could capture loads of water for use in toilets etc, but this doesn't seem to have been catered for.

Some buildings do that but remember that the Shard has a very low land area to volume ratio so the contribution of rainwater would not do much to dampen demand from the mains.

Might make a difference if it were raining at an angle, it doesn't usually rain straight down. I'm not sure whether it would make that much of a difference, though. :)

It's been around for quite a long time (see how much Shard core is still exposed). And the image is squashed, so all the buildings appear narrower/taller than they really are.

And I've a hunch it might have been photoshopped a bit as well!

Did you see this article about a couple of blokes who live in a shed on the roof of a building in the shadow of the Shard? Was pretty interesting reading http://www.londonlaunchpad.com/in-the-shadow-of-the-shard. Something of a stark contrast. Will be funny to think people in their 5 star hotel suite will be looking out over 2 blokes having a wash on a roof!

The hermitage towers will most probably be given a height reduction. I would love to see London with more supertalls and rumour has it that there is one in the talks.

Hmm, looking at the close ups LJ took, the levels seem to be the same size/height as the apartment levels. So a level is recognised by a glazing unit.

When ffinybryn says level 87, I think he's counting every single floor (including plant).

Technically, the floors are counted as each glass panel. This reduces to 2.6m at the spire - which is cheating somewhat when you consider that Heron Towers floors were 4.128m.

I have been trying to make sense of how tall this thing is going to be. Thanks to gegloma01 (page 960 post #19187) and an image from WSP, I think this helps...

Question for the expert.

Will the sections for the top of the spire already have the glazing units installed as I would have thought it quite difficult to attach them 300m up on the stand alone spire parts?

Well its good news; Guy’s and St Thomas’ have decided to take the unprecedented decision to divert all recourses and available funds for patient care in developing a cloaking device to make the Tower "disappear". They plan to have this fully operational within the next 30 years or so. Until then they will be mounting large hydraulic rams that will allow the tower to lower 100 meters. This can be done on a whim so anyone wanting to take a photo of the Shard without this blot on the landscape just needs to pre-arrange this with the hospital.

Don't know about a fixed height restriction but the last I heard there will not be any buildings taller than the Shard in central London.

If you mean level 75 then no, this is a steel plate floor with a site applied insulation and waterproof membrane. This is one of the reasons for the apparent lack of progress recently.

Great diagram. Does central London have an actual, fixed height restriction, and if so, what is it?

The height limit for London is The Shard. The maximum allowed as I understand it is 1000ft AOD and the Shard sits on an area of ground allowing an extra 16ft or so to AGL.

Unless we move the airports of Heathrow and or City Airport which also restricts building heights there to 800ft AOD there won't be anything taller in London or unless CAA lift the height restrictions currently imposed for safety reasons.

Planes must have 1000ft between them when stacked and that principle also applies to how near any object is to them so the top of any building must be 1000ft away from the fusilage. There is of course contingency built in which means these planes are always more than 1000ft above The Shard....the limit is imposed as an absolute safety measure and 'padding'. So I'm all for Boris Island personally!!!!!
