Is it twice taller than the Guy's yet?

I know you were continuing the old joke from before, but it's actually funny you should ask that at this point during construction, because the answer is yes, it's pretty much exactly twice the height of Guy's just now!
Guy's is 143m, the Shard's current height according to ffinybryn (see post 21487) is 286m ... 286/2 = 143.

And chest, your photo never cease to impress. Brilliant work.

Yes. I'm guessing it's taken from somewhere around Greenwich (on a long-range zoom), so it would be about there.

Is that WEMBLEY?! In Chest's last picture?

A few years ago, I was walking along the Thames between Putney Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge and at one point the arch appears directly over the middle of the river. It took my brain a while to accept (i) that the Thames was orientated towards Wembley at that point and (ii) that the arch should loom so large from that distance.

And when I first moved to London I worked with someone old enough to remember London before the BT Tower. He said he still couldn't come to terms with how you could view the "Post Office Tower", as he still called it, from all sorts of places. "It's as though it follows you" were his words. I imagine if I reach his age I will be saying similar things about The Shard.

I have now officially started to create my final Shard diagram timelapse, which will take longer than I planned, because most of my previously posted/saved diagrams have been filled with mistakes or wrong (for example the core widths). For now I have to go through every single paint document from August 2007-to today's Shard diagrams just to correct them to fit together in the timelapse. Wish me luck on my new long job:guns1:!
Even the one above is wrong:cry:! Look at both Shards around the level 40 area, they don't match!:gaah:

I don't want to make your job any harder, but are you going to ensure that it's chronologically accurate? For example, will there be an appropriate length of time between each image:

1 Nov - 2 Nov - (pause) - 4 Nov - 5 Nov - (pause) - (pause) - 8 Nov

rather than

1 Nov - 2 Nov - 4 Nov - 5 Nov - 8 Nov

?

Does it really make that much difference, I know Paris has the Eiffel tower & Egypt the pyramids. I would go to see these because they are the Eiffel Tower and the Pyramids and not because they happen to be on some directory. The Shard could in any way generate tourism.

Thats a fair point, i think next time i go to london ill take a trip across to Southwark n grab a beer in the sky bar. Might set me back 20 quid but worth the view. Add it the collection of; Q1, eureka tower, auckland sky tower, sydney tower, Melaka tower, petronas towers, baikoye tower and that new 'un in Saigon.

It does wind me up that sometimes it feels English Heritage would only be happy if we stopped building anything except mock-Prince Charles-period-naff, and London simply stayed exactly the same forever and ever. The fact is a new percentage of people will actually trawl across to the London Bridge quarter purely to see up close and personal the Shard, thus boosting the economy and tourist trade. How confusing is that for these people to understand! Are tourists going to think 'ohh the Tower of London, oh its spoilt by that 300m tower over the other side of the river - actually that looks more interesting than this derelict castle'........maybe English Heritage are jealous?

The viewing corridor of St Paul's from Parliament Hill in Hampstead Heath is now completely obsolete due to the Shard. There is no reason to maintain this viewing corridor anymore.

In any event, these protected views are irrelevant to the way 99% of Londoners experience the city!

What I really mean is that there is no reason to put limitations on tall buildings in Southwark. You already have the Shard and Guy's hospital. It makes no sense to freeze Southwark's skyline in its current form.

Did anyone see Simon Jenkins's article in the Standard yesterday? Typical moaning about these 'monstrosities' dominating London. *rolls eyes*.

I think the Shard is beginning to look absolutely stunning now - after culminating in that flat peak for so long, the beginnings of the spire have really transformed its appearance.

I also think that, contrary to the opinions of people like Simon Jenkins, the Shard is going to attract a huge amount of interest from both tourists and Londoners - just walk across the Millennium Bridge and watch the amount of people pointing/stopping to look at it/take pictures/talk about it. It's quite something.

Incidentally, it looked incredible from Waterloo Station main entrance this morning - the way the newly polished cladding was catching the morning sunlight was almost blinding!

Perhaps they want to fully complete the spire first, then just finish it all off after? Either that or there is no more glass left following the repairs after the riots

that is awesome! London doesnt need loads of skyscrapers to have a truly world class and recognisable skyline because what it already has are of such a high standard in their shape and form and even in their balanced location that it more than makes up for the lack of numbers.
London is a truly beautiful city, so interesting, now with the shard and the pinnacle, leadenhall etc on the way will give it such an interesting skyline. I would argue that we dont need more after this, the skyline will have a beautiful balance.

I Think we need the Vauxhall cluster, the House project around LBT, CW completed, and another 5 or so between 250m and 350m in the City, then I think we should pause.
What we do not want in the city is anything else between 150m and 200m, otherwise it will start to look like a wall, and no NEW clusters

This is a great picture but I think St. Pauls in on the left hand side spoils the view of the Shard. Therefore I don't think the Shard is really a super-tall.

i still think we need a lot more skyscrapers, more around the same height as the pinnacle and the shard, or even taller in the city of london.

personally i think the way forward for london is by having only a few, very well designed and iconic buildings being built in the city every once in a while, as the cluster that will be formed in the city by bsg, 20fc, 122 ldh and 100 bsg will create a very iconic cluster, similar with the proposals in southwark and st georges. we also need a big, dense skyline in an american or australian style, which is where CW comes in. with proposals like WW and the like that could get off the ground once the works in CW are completed (circa 2018 if i am correct?) we get CW forming a very large, impressive skyline (even if it is boxes, IMO they look great if their used in large scale, like in sydney, or vancouver) similar to manhattan but realistically smaller scale. so this way we have large, impressive skyline in london and also a fantastically eccentric cluster formed of well designed iconic buildings. this is the ntural and logical way forward for londons skyline IMO.

Maybe I should have attached #sarcasm

Replace the words:
St. Pauls with the Shard
Shard with The London Tower
and Super-Tall with Unesco World Heritage Site.

What I said is completely ridicules but this is the logic of Unesco.

Would have been more obvious had St Pauls been even remotely visible. And moved to the Southbank since you said it was on the left hand side of the Shard..

Exactly. The frame of the spire might be in place by Christmas, but the last coupld of metres of glass that will put the fear into all urban parachutists, certainly won't be!

"129.5 times bigger than Big Ben", and it will be for some time. Getting the building watertight is what's important at the moment. Using level 87 as a working platform to aid speedy cladding installation.

The edge profile of the glass wont be too far away from the image.
The cantilever steelwork that supports the upper glass panels will not look as slender and will have a heavier/chunkier presence.
Also there is a big BMU unit that sits on level 87 which will be visible through the gaps, particularly the facing gap shown in the image.

It's difficult to say because the sides are not parallel and slope at different rates.

However, projecting the centre of the North & South facade columns, gives a height of just over 344m.

Do I sense a retrospective planning application?

I have absolutely no objection to you adjusting my pics!! (Now we know why all your photos are so good).

Only problem on this occasion is that you have stripped out all the early morning colours and it looks like they were taken at midday, rather than 7.30am.

As for the comments from Schmeek... :ohno: - We are clearly on different planets, the building looked stunning this morning glowing a whole range of pinks, purples, oranges and yellows in the sunrise. The east elevation is in its element in the early morning.

I would agree with you to some degree...
Your elevation shows the intersection of the East & West facades which are wider apart and will therefore meet higher up.
Also, my dimensions were taken from the centre of the columns - not the outside glazing face.

However, my calculations were done using a 3D AutoCAD model, not a scaled render...

:okay:

It's currently 286m as far as I'm aware. It might take a while for the spire to come, they'll probably want to focus more on the facade for the next while before they complete the steelwork.

Not quite on different planets, or different countries for that matter, but was sat looking at it on a monitor 110 miles west, whilst you were looking at it in the flesh..
I'm sure the morning light was beautiful, and like I already said: good photos. I just think the early light revealed the shards 'guts' in an interesting but not so attractive way, as opposed to when the sun is up and instead the glass reflects it making it look like a true shard rather than the 'guys 2.0 in a dull glass box'.

I have been in London in March, 2010 and the Shard had only a base :-) Nice to see it in higher position. What date is the official end of work on the Shard? Maybe, I will be in London in August - few days after the Olympic games. Will be some other skycraper finish till August?

Our very own ffinybryn has just stated in the world forum that the glass cladding will now rise before the tip is finished, a mobile crane will be hoisted onto the top asap next week (wind permitting) to assist in this.

SkyscraperSuperman
December 9th, 2011, 08:28 PM
It makes sense - using level 87 as a flat base will give a single mobile crane full 360 degree access for cladding panels to be installed on all sides of the building - having the spire there would just get in the way, and so would require more than one crane on top to get the job done efficiently. So the glazing will be able to get done faster, then they can move onto the spire when the current superstructure is fully, or almost fully, clad.

Whats the plan in relation to this, new stairs/escalator from St Thomas Street up to concourse level or new ped bridge?

cybertect

Escalator to street level and a pedestrian crossing, a Pelican, I think.

The bridge is being taken out over Christmas, if I remember the signs they've put up recently.

But the steps and bridge to Guy's is staying, right?

cybertect
December 12th, 2011, 12:16 AM
TBH I'm not sure if that's going with the rest of the bridge, but I've not seen anything to indicate it's staying. The section over St Thomas Street to the station is for the chop, certainly.

I does look very temporary, but if it does go there will be a doorway on the third floor that only abseilers could use.

Also, the signs announce that the bridge is coming down at Christmas, but the escalators won't be opening until March. Ladder?

Well, there is the other (main) entrance at ground level a bit further down Great Maze Pond.

The stairs aren't visible on LB Southwark's Masterplan for St Thomas Street (http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200190/current_projects/2200/st_thomas_street_public_realm_upgrade/1).

If you look at the drawing (http://www.southwark.gov.uk/download/6032/st_thomas_st_masterplan), there's no evidence of the steps up and a rather inconveniently placed tree on Great Maze Pond if they are to be retained.

Just found what I've been looking for.

According to Guy's Hospital, it's all going

Footbridge removal - Q&A (http://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/resources/about_us/wayfinding/guys-footbridge-questions.pdf) [PDF]

How will patients access the Sexual Health Clinic after the footbridge,
stairs and gantry comes down?

The current entrance to the Sexual Health Clinic will cease to exist. It will be
boarded up and eventually bricked in to make it look like the rest of the
building. The entry to the Sexual Health Clinic will move to the St Thomas
Street entrance to Southwark Wing (currently restricted entry). This will
become the main entrance to the Sexual Health Clinic and clear wayfinding
signage will also be introduced inside the hospital to ensure patients can find
the clinic through the new access point.

Also, the signs announce that the bridge is coming down at Christmas, but the escalators won't be opening until March. Ladder?

From the Q&A - there will be signage directing people down the existing escalators inside the station concourse. Additionally,

What provision is being made for disabled people get to Guy's Hospital from London Bridge Station in the interim period before the new lifts
become operational?

The temporary route to Guy's Hospital will be clearly signposted both inside
and outside London Bridge station. This will include directions to the lift inside
the station that gives access to Joiner Street. Disabled people that are not
able to make use of the escalators inside the station will need to use this lift.

Went to see the Shard for the second time Saturday just gone. OMG, it really does have that WOW factor now in terms of height. In fact, my cousin came with me and couldn't believe how big the people were in the cleaning lifts and said she didn't expect it to be "that tall". I have photos, but please can someone tell me how to load them on here, pleassse! :)

You have to upload your oils to a website like photo bucket, copy the image HTML (the one that says http) and paste onto the thread.

Finally started cleaning the south side. Is this the only window cleaning unit on the shard that comes out of a two panel opening? All others seem to be four panel openings.

I would say yes. It can only be two wide, possibly three at most due to it being so close to the corner of the building.

I was in London at the weekend, and once again I was truly staggered. It's friggin huge. I still can't believe it's actually risen after all these years. I managed to get a few snaps, here's one I have online at the moment. It was fairly blinding!

I don't know about English Heritage, but based on the that photo, while very cool looking, it seems like the CAA might have some words to say about it.

Nor the Pier Head in Liverpool for that matter....

The difference is however that London's waterside, in fact the architecture of London, is in a state of constant flux, whereas say the Bund, or Paris or to a lesser extent New York were all done around the same period, which happened to be a good time for architecture.

London's feel will always therefore be less uniform than those other examples, but on the plus side that does mean that we can recycle the land a lot more. Over time, long after were gone, London should be something of a curio of myriad great examples of different architectural styles, far more interesting than the uniformity of other places.
