NAME: The Wedge @ Morningside (a.k.a Wedge-idential :))
LOCATION: Morningside
STATUS: Proposed
FLOORS: 21
HEIGHT: ?
USE: Residential

Decided to post this. Bear in mind the model above is an old design and the building has changed quite a bit. There is a new model but is at the architects, as it is very big. Will try and get pics of that, but it is only 12F. Current rights for the building are 12F, although developers are considering rezoning for higher capacity (more floors) considering the new spatial framework guide recommends higher densities in close proximity to Gautrain stations.

Ya i would wait until it has been decided if the rezoning is to go through or not. And like i have said the design has changed quite a bit. Give it a few more weeks before adding

How has the design changed besides the obvious shorter look? This one does have some tuscan elements to it it seems. I do hope they allow it to be taller than 12F, cos that is a real shame!

UGLY!!! It belongs in some obscure middle eastern, asian city. Joburg is an ugly looking city already and needs classy towers.

^^ No. That's just YOUR perception of Joburg. Our beauty is not as obvious as Cape Town's, but we have it if you care to look for it. Just don't call us ugly.

It is actually an 'African' themed building, hence the browns and reds. Tuscan was the complete opposite of the intention of the architect, but hey, i guess it might look that way to the untrained eye..

^^ you can say "african" all you want. The general public will think tuscan. but thats besides the point. It aint a pretty building. Big yes, pretty no.

I want joburg (sandton esp) to get a modern skyscraper, not something that tries to be something else.

And Tom i think he was refering to your buildings in joburg, not the city itself. If he is talking about buildings then he does have a point. its faux faux faux...i want to see modern stuff happening in jozi...there are very very few modern style buildings in sandton

Hideous... an ugly commieblock. Reminds me of some of those big uglies in Hillbrow.

Uglies in Hillbrow? Yes, luckily Durbs and Cape town escaped hideous designs... No Protea Hotels with revolving restaurants in seapoint, no BP highrises and of course, no mont blanc or john ross. Durban and Cape Town only have beautiful high rises, wonderful architecture and forward thinking. And century city, umhlanga and strand is supposed to be an example of this?!!! Architecture is about taste, and if this block was planned in CT or Durban you would have all gone and pissed yourself with excitement.

wow dude...frankly if this planned as the first highrise in umlazi i dont think people would be happy. Its cool that you like it, it shows that we all have vastly different tastes when it comes to style of buildings.

I never said that durban and ct escaped bad architecture in the 70s and 80s (we certainly have our fair share of eyesores...but thats another long story), but Joburg seems to thrive on constantly creating kak new buildings...like this one

Actually, I'm not remotely biased. I used to be biased for Jozi, if anything. Cape Town has plenty of uglies although they also have plenty of beautiful architecture, and Durban has mostly unexciting architecture to my tastes...

Don't point fingers at me for nothing. I simply think this buildng is horrible! (The old buildings in Hillbrow are cooler to me... they have a very specific era look to them, I love them actually.) I hate this building though, as I stated.

Hmmm... I do not know what to make of this thing. I think the building is too massive from many angles. The flaring of the base of the building is done in a very architecturally outdated fashion. That was status quo in the 70's, not very "now" in its approach. I think it's being way too Nairobi for Johannesburg... there are ways to marry modernism and glitz with African themes... Dubai has often done that marrying Islamic architectural elements with the modern. Think is a little of a do-over. Just my humble opinion.

Still can't say unfortunately. Legal issues surrounding the dev have made things sticky. Can't promise an update before the end of this year, sorry
