As you can see on Riad Solh sq picture, there was some of Mercedes Taxi-cabs called the Mercedes ''Fintail''. They were used in the 60's, 70's & 80's before they got replaced by the Mercedes 200-230 atch(due to its boxy shape)

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7350/mercedes20w115gw1.jpg

Then replaced by the Mercedes 200-230 laff (due to its round shape) from the 80's till today

what was southern Beirut like back then ?

kheireddine
July 17th, 2007, 07:39 AM
The southern suburbs cover a large area. On the Airport road, there was a pine
wood like you see on the picture. This is an extension of Beirut park. Those pine trees were planted in the time of Emir Fakhreddine II in the 17th century to stabilize the shifting sands thus preventing sand storms on the city. Also on the Airport Road was built in the 50's some large mansions and palaces belonging to well off and prominent Beirutis. Further South near the Airport is located Borj El Barajneh, a Palestinian Refugee camp. Toward the sea, there was the village of Ouzaï surrounded by sand dunes and sandy beach. It was a poor area of internal migrants coming majorly from the Baalback region. While toward the east, Ghobeiri, an ancient village became in the 50's and 60's an urbanized suburb inhabited by lower and middle class people. Same for Haret Hreik and Chiah. Farm land and fruit gardens surrounded the built areas. In general, the illegal settlements were constructed by people fleeing the Southern Lebanon, for security and economical reasons, especially after the 1978 invasion.

Saint Simon beach is located in Jnah between Ramlet El Baida and Ouzaï, south of beirut. I was a nice sandy beach with chalets, it got occupied in 1976 by refugees from the Quarantina slum then by refugees from the South. Now, it is the poorest area in the southern suburbs.

Hi Beirut!

If I've read Solidere's new annual report correctly, they've abandoned plans to rebuild the old police station on Martyrs Square (it's place will be taken by the RHariri memorial library), and will instead build a replica of the old or Petit Serail across the street from the Phoenician Village plot, as a new home for the Foreign Affairs Ministry. It's not the original site, and won't actually be on Martyrs Square, as it wouldn't fit the increased scale called for under the new plans for that edge of the square. But for what it's worth, the Petit Serail will rise again.

According to Fouad Debbas' book, Beirut; Our Memory, the old Serail was begun in 1882, to replace Fakhr ed-Din's serail, which was demolished (though it seems it was not on exactly the same location). When the Ottomans' headquarters was moved to the barracks in 1917, the old Serail became the Petit Serail, and the barracks became the Grand Serail (which became a 'grander' and I think better building after RHariri rebuilt it, adding another floor).

Debbas' book is a great reference.

The Old Serail was demolished in accordance to Ecochard plan (a French urban planner) to extend the Place des Martyrs toward the port. Plans were changed due to corruption & incompetence and Beirut lost a landmark!

I just would like to note that the offices of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister were in the Old Serail until the Independance in 1943. It got demolished in the early 50's.

It was built in the 19th century by Turks using it as a barrack or a military base and then in 1943 it started to house the prime minister

really just some of the outside walls were left..Its amazing. Its a brandnew building built in the styleof the old. Actually there is 2 new floors one is under the roof which you cant really see. If you look close at the "peak of the roof" you can see the windows sticking out. People complain but they seem to forget how things were after the war..I went in 93' it was a mess..i would not recognize it now. Truley amazing.

Those vendors were called Bayye3een kaz in Arabic. They existed until the ealy 80's. Kerozene was used for heating (very toxic fumes, we had a deffayet kaz that we used in 1976 when there was no power).

Jayme, the balck and white stripy lighthouse was built in the 20's by the French mandate authority to replace the old lighthouse which was built in 1820. Here is a picture of the old lighthouse:

Yes, Zahlé has been a big town for the last couple of hundred years but its population is growing, I remember that it was estimated at 50,000 in the 70's , now it is about 80,000 souls.

According to Wikipedia: Zahlé was founded about 300 years ago by Toufic Saliba in an area whose past reaches back some five millennia. In the early 18th century the new town was divided into three separate quarters, each of which had its own governor. The city enjoyed a brief period as the region's first independent state in the 19th century when it had its own flag and anthem. Zahlé was burned in 1777 and 1791, and it was burned and plundered in 1860. But during the rule of the Mutasarrifiah, Zahlé began to regain its prosperity. The railroad line which came through in 1885 improved commerce and the town became the internal "port" of the Beqaa and Syria. It was also the center of agriculture and trade between Beirut and Damascus, Mosul and Baghdad.

Cactus was used as a natural fence in Beirut until the 20's
I remember when I was a kid, I used to see Cactuses in Ras Beirut Gardens. Its fruit, the sobbeir is delicious. Here is the Wikipedia link for the kind of Cactus that was planted in Beirut:

Beirut - Ein El Mreisseh in 1890

It looks like they did some land reclamation afterwards as there's the corniche now between the mosque and the sea. Note the college hall in AUB (upper right) was already built.. with its clock tower I wonder if it was the tallest building of that era

Around 1930. The dome on the top of the UFA building has been added by Solidaire.

The problem with Nahr Bayrout is that the area surrounding it was originally a marsh land. The area was flooded regularly and due to ubranization, the flow had to be controlled, that is why the state built in the 60's the concrete bed of the river.

Lebanese allways loved burning stuff in roits

Yes Jayme, I remember when Abdel Nasser died in 1970, our street in Manara was full of black smoke from burning tires. I also remember tires burning in Furn El Chebbak around 1973 during a students demonstration...:ohno:

Jayme, I got used to all toxic fumes, especially from burning garbage in 1976 and 1982 when there wasn't any garbage collection due to war. Also, we used to get intoxicated by the Katol mosquito coils...

What a coïncidence, I was looking at pics of Batroun taken in 1957-58 in a book that my sister brought me from Lebanon yesterday, the book is Circa 1958, it is full of pics of Lebanon taken by Greek urban developers in 1957-58. I have to check about the copyrights before I start scanning them ;)

well i have herd its Legal to copy 10 % of the contents of a book
too bad the batourn area is like 95 % of rocky beachs it would have been an awesome place to go to the beach
i think the closest sand beach is at Florida Beach Chekka near the Village my Family is from.
People love rocky beachs there because they like to eat toutya how ever how you spell it
i allways cut my feet while walking on the rocks , once some women move out of my way i had to walk over these pointy rocks
lol i fell

Old Beirut Airport under construction by the engineers Ibrahim and Fayez El-Ahdab. It was located in Bir Hassan facing the land that became later the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium. The terminal remained there until it got destroyed by the Israeli air raids on the Stadium, on June 4, 1982Courtesy of Wassim Chemaitelli http://wassch71.tripod.com/cedraile160.html
