Hassoun July 17th, 2007, 03:44 AM ^^Yes,the worst thing about the civil war was those illegal buildings in the southern suburb of Beirut. Jayme July 17th, 2007, 05:46 AM Jayme, It remained like that until 1975 & that is how I remeber it when I was a kid. My grand father had a house there, we used to see only pine trees around us. what was southern Beirut like back then ? kheireddine July 17th, 2007, 07:39 AM The southern suburbs cover a large area. On the Airport road, there was a pine wood like you see on the picture. This is an extension of Beirut park. Those pine trees were planted in the time of Emir Fakhreddine II in the 17th century to stabilize the shifting sands thus preventing sand storms on the city. Also on the Airport Road was built in the 50's some large mansions and palaces belonging to well off and prominent Beirutis. Further South near the Airport is located Borj El Barajneh, a Palestinian Refugee camp. Toward the sea, there was the village of Ouzaï surrounded by sand dunes and sandy beach. It was a poor area of internal migrants coming majorly from the Baalback region. While toward the east, Ghobeiri, an ancient village became in the 50's and 60's an urbanized suburb inhabited by lower and middle class people. Same for Haret Hreik and Chiah. Farm land and fruit gardens surrounded the built areas. In general, the illegal settlements were constructed by people fleeing the Southern Lebanon, for security and economical reasons, especially after the 1978 invasion. jixline July 17th, 2007, 12:06 PM thank you all for your contributions and especially kheireddine  kheireddine July 17th, 2007, 02:14 PM I will have more pictures later, because Image Shack is down currently :( þopsï July 17th, 2007, 02:22 PM http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/cedra_2007/weddingpicnic1926.jpg?t=1184674689 þopsï July 17th, 2007, 02:24 PM http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/cedra_2007/Sortieabcharre1932.gif þopsï July 17th, 2007, 02:27 PM http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/cedra_2007/telesiegefaraya1950.jpg þopsï July 17th, 2007, 02:28 PM http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/cedra_2007/JouniehSeashore1928.gif þopsï July 17th, 2007, 02:29 PM http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb293/cedra_2007/stsimonpics1950.gif Jayme July 17th, 2007, 02:35 PM ^^ where abouts is st simon beach ? uff at the Jounieh beach there is nothing there in the backround Hassoun July 17th, 2007, 02:39 PM ^^ We need a law that prohibits building on green areas. kheireddine July 17th, 2007, 02:40 PM Saint Simon beach is located in Jnah between Ramlet El Baida and Ouzaï, south of beirut. Why on earth would they demolish this building for a cinema?? How old is the new Serail? I thought it was built in the 19th Century? ainmreisiot July 18th, 2007, 07:30 AM Oh I had no idea there was an old Serail! and in this location! Why on earth would they demolish this building for a cinema?? How old is the new Serail? I thought it was built in the 19th Century? Hi Beirut! If I've read Solidere's new annual report correctly, they've abandoned plans to rebuild the old police station on Martyrs Square (it's place will be taken by the RHariri memorial library), and will instead build a replica of the old or Petit Serail across the street from the Phoenician Village plot, as a new home for the Foreign Affairs Ministry. It's not the original site, and won't actually be on Martyrs Square, as it wouldn't fit the increased scale called for under the new plans for that edge of the square. But for what it's worth, the Petit Serail will rise again. According to Fouad Debbas' book, Beirut; Our Memory, the old Serail was begun in 1882, to replace Fakhr ed-Din's serail, which was demolished (though it seems it was not on exactly the same location). When the Ottomans' headquarters was moved to the barracks in 1917, the old Serail became the Petit Serail, and the barracks became the Grand Serail (which became a 'grander' and I think better building after RHariri rebuilt it, adding another floor). Debbas' book is a great reference. kheireddine July 18th, 2007, 02:36 PM Oh I had no idea there was an old Serail! and in this location! Why on earth would they demolish this building for a cinema?? The Old Serail was demolished in accordance to Ecochard plan (a French urban planner) to extend the Place des Martyrs toward the port. Plans were changed due to corruption & incompetence and Beirut lost a landmark! kheireddine July 18th, 2007, 02:48 PM I just would like to note that the offices of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister were in the Old Serail until the Independance in 1943. It got demolished in the early 50's. Nadini July 18th, 2007, 03:49 PM Oh I had no idea there was an old Serail! and in this location! Why on earth would they demolish this building for a cinema?? How old is the new Serail? I thought it was built in the 19th Century? It was built in the 19th century by Turks using it as a barrack or a military base and then in 1943 it started to house the prime minister Nadini July 18th, 2007, 03:54 PM You can see the extra floor added that ainmreisiot is talking about in these pictures http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/445/page234235a5bp.jpg (http://imageshack.us) After http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/235/page234235d2bc.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4831/page236237dcasteloestilootoman.jpg (http://imageshack.us) kheireddine July 18th, 2007, 04:29 PM There was some concrete add ons giving on the inner court, thanks god they got removed! Yes, Zahlé has been a big town for the last couple of hundred years but its population is growing, I remember that it was estimated at 50,000 in the 70's , now it is about 80,000 souls. According to Wikipedia: Zahlé was founded about 300 years ago by Toufic Saliba in an area whose past reaches back some five millennia. In the early 18th century the new town was divided into three separate quarters, each of which had its own governor. The city enjoyed a brief period as the region's first independent state in the 19th century when it had its own flag and anthem. Zahlé was burned in 1777 and 1791, and it was burned and plundered in 1860. But during the rule of the Mutasarrifiah, Zahlé began to regain its prosperity. The railroad line which came through in 1885 improved commerce and the town became the internal "port" of the Beqaa and Syria. It was also the center of agriculture and trade between Beirut and Damascus, Mosul and Baghdad. kheireddine July 22nd, 2007, 08:38 PM http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/3482/cactuszl2.jpg Cactus was used as a natural fence in Beirut until the 20's I remember when I was a kid, I used to see Cactuses in Ras Beirut Gardens.
