Jayme, when I was a kid, around 1972-1973 I saw the merchandise train crossing Dahr El-Baidar going to Zahleh, Rayak & Baalback. They were still using steam engine locomotives!

No, Jayme, the Station near the harbour did not last very long for passengers train, it was used mainly for freight and I still remeber the rails in the middle of the road. The main station is located between Quarantina and Gemmayzeh.

Lebanon is overcrowded and small, I don't think that a railway system would be practical. Especially when no one respect the traffic rules. Unfortunately, Lebanon is not Switzerland where the train is part of the national identity and culture. Maybe one day, a suspended train would be constructed along the coast to ease traffic.

wowww... these photos are unbelievable..thanks for posting them.. It really made me realise how much of Beirut has been lost over the years, it has a different beauty to it that makes it more special than it is now??? the war and lack of city plannin really took away its essence. I wish a train service existed but who knows maybe a subway or a coastal train as mentioned would be the way to go..

kheireddine

Thanks Zouz, the war destroyed a lot and as you said, Beirut also lost its charm due to the lack of planning and conservation of the old buildings...

Lebanese Jewish sudents coming back from the Alliance Israélite school.

Lebanon had a small jewish community (6000) that was concentrated around Wadi Abou Jmil st between Bab-Idriss and Kantari. They all left during the war :ohno:

In 1972, I was in 12e (my first school year) at College de LaSalle (demolished in 1973) near the Holiday Inn, one of my friends was Elliot Zeitouneh, a Lebanese Jew. We were 6 y.o. and I still remember his name...

To know more about Lebanese-jews, check this blog from which I took the picture:

Yes, Saida had a train station; I saw regularly the freight train going to the South as we used to go to Beach Club in Khaldeh in the early 70's. However, I think the train was not going beyond Saida after the 1948 nakbah as I saw a picture in Circa 1958 Album where the railway is described as inoperative near the Tapline.

Actually, looking at them from Google Earth, they look well maintained.
I remeber going with my parents to Tabarja Beach when it was just built in 1974 as my father was thinking about buying a chalet.
Here is Tabarja Beach satellite view:

It was forbidden to swim in Ramel Al Baida before 1975 as there were warning signs about sea currents. In 1982, during the Israeli invasion the beach was mined and a lot of unexploded rockets were burried in the sand. In 1983, Oger Liban converted the beach to a public resort, after it got demined by the Multinational Force; the sand was cleaned and I guess that some sand was added.

Also, the fact that the water looks closer to the Corniche could be due to a high tide...

Wow, I had no idea...thanks for the info!

The old buildings you see in the 1974 picture got demolished in early 1975 as the construction started in the winter, At the same time, Ain Mraysseh Ibn Sina st got enlarged. Constuction was halted between September 75 when the Hotels War started and was resumed in mid 1977 to be finished in 1979.

Unfortunately not. There was a great movie theatre called the St-Charles with very confortable seats and a turning restaurant on the top. My father promised to take us there; however, the war started immediately afterwards. I only visited the Phoenicia around 1972 (I was 6) because my father had conferences and business meetings there.

Those pictures were taken by the Italian photographer Fulvio Roiter, who took pictures everywhere in Lebanon in 1967 and 1974. It is like he knew that something was about to happen. I would like to point out that the sturctures of the Holiday Inn and the Murr Tower are amazingly solid despite all the rockets they received. In February 1976, my parents sent for a month to the Soeurs de Besançon school, I witnessed one late afternoon while I was in Arabic class, the exchange of fire between the two towers, the Kataeb where in the Holiday Inn while the Mourabitoun where in the Murr tower, IT WAS SPECTACULAR! In 1984, while I was in Lycée Abdel Kader in Zarif, I saw the Murr Tower, that was occupied then by Amal, being hit directly serveral times by direct shells from a Lebanese Army tank that was shooting from Tabaris; amazing, the tower did not vibrate...

As I know it, notice that the El-Abd clock tower was moved in the late 60's to Corniche Al Nahr in order to make place to Roman ruins...Thanks god, it got returned in the 90's.

Were the ruins excavated from that location? Or were they moved there to be on display?

It is a new statue as the original one got torn down in late 1975, like Beshara El-Khoury statue between Bashoura & Sodeco & Abdel Hamid Karameh statue in Trablos. The statues got torn down by the leftists as a symbol of revolt against traditional leadership.

Yes, the demolition was completed a couple months ago (the Google Earth images are not up-to-date).

Although it may have been a historical landmark, it was a terrible eye-sore for the neighborhood (one of the last remaining scars of the war in such a prime location).

The ruins were excavated in 67/68 on site. The parliament building was built ontop of the Roman Forum (admistration) as well as the famous law school....this was an extermely important archaelogical area..The baths etc all formed this area.. The clock tower was removed at the start of the war and rebuilt stone by stone after. I just cant find out what happened to the ruins..i seem to recall an article i read many years ago that said they were reburied...BUt how do you do that? just fill it with dirt? What about the foundation of the clock?lol I dunno...anyone have more info?

Actually, in 2004 I spoke with a Lebanese archaeologist/historian that was working on the site of the Garden of forgiveness around 1995 (?) when it was being excavated...she said that numerous roman columns in great condition were discovered under the adjacent street leading to Nijmeh Square and the government immediately loaded them in a truck and took them away to an unknown location!

She said Solidere was worried these findings would cause further excavation of Nijmeh square, thus destroying the historical buildings that were being renovated...(maybe just a rumor?)

I agree with Solidere, if they continued excavation we may have unearthed Roman-era Beirut, but at the same time lost the heart of modern-Beirut. The point is, all these columns/statues (similar to the few that are standing in the GOF now) were taken away to be stored somewhere and no one knows what their fate will be. I really hope they are returned and somehow incorporated into the GOF or at least put on display somewhere else in the city!

IF ANYONE reading this now knows anything about this please feel free to chime in!

My father told me that when the Municipality was digging the pedestrian underpass Corner Weygand & Allenby pn the late 60's, they unearthed some Roman columns. Later, when The Chamber of Commerce & Industry was being built in Sanayeh (1971-72), my father who was its Director then, requested from the City to install one of those Columns at the intersection in front of the Chamber. I dont know if its possible or not..but can you imagine if they kept or restored where the colums were (if they were moved). Since the area is pedestrian they could have made sections of the road above them see-thru...Like they did in the floor of the greek church on nejmeh...That would be so cool..like your really have modern and old ! it would be like walking thru a museum.

Kheireddine, first of all you are amazing! What a patience you have when scanning all these great photos and posting them in the forum... you ROCK!

Second, I unfortunately live in Qatar (but I am Leb), and seeing the magnitude of the projects going on in the GCC, I am starting to CRY for what Lebanon have become nowadays... I am not supporting any group over the other, nor I am opening up a political debate... but what is going on in our country is outrageous.

While projects are flowing by the BILLIONS over UAE, KSA, Qatar, etc... we are witnessing destruction, anger, hatred and low life standards.

With all do respect to the GCC nationals on this board, I just need one breath from Lebanon to last me more than 365 days in the GCC.

For example Dubai, it has one of the worst atmosphere in the whole GCC, but seeing the magnitude of its projects... one can consider it as a great and "visiteable" country. 7aram lebnen ma ykoun fi heik mcheri3 ya 3alam!

I was in Lebanon b/w the 3rd and 18th of August, I came be3ezz the deputy elections in the Metn area... My dad was deeply into it, phone calls, results, TV, smoking, bla bla bla.... and young people 3am bedayy3o wa2toun w 7ayetoun on the streets carrying flags and swearing on each other.... 7aram!!!
I started laughing on BOTH (especially my dad)

Do you all know that we as Lebanese expats in the GCC, we are mainly considered as "luxury employees" whose salaries are high as well as their spending power? We are considered as tasteful people, witty, conning, able to run businesses and hold important posts in huge companies....

Mich 7aram heik na3moul bi baladna yalle houwwe a7la balad in the Middle East?

Let us stop the BS and start building towers and multi Bn $ projects and enhance our country and develop it to become better than it was in Kheireddine's pictures!...
