:eek: I havent seen that pic yet!! That downtown is much better than your other city's downtown. Great planning. Where did you get some of those buildings? I haven't seen some of them. did u copy my style of putting the downtown as a waterfront?;) j/k

I'm having a hard time in SC4. My city isn't earning money (that's why i resulted into cheating). I dont have pics of the city yet.

il fenomeno, you can take a picture of you city easily. Go to options and there is a camara, you take the picture and all of them are stored in an album in My Documents/simcity 4/albums.

I have seen here that there are not a lot of SimCity fans, in the spanish forums we had to open five threads about the game :D

OK, I loved 2000 but moved to XP before I ever got 3000 (which like 2000 doesn't work in Win2K or later). So I finally went out and got SC4, and I must say there is so much crap I need to learn. Wow!

A few questions for you guys...

What do you find is the best zoning strategy when getting started? What ratio of industrial to residential to commercial? How many squares of each? What about farms (now that you actually have agricultural zoning)?

Do skyscrapers really do anything for your city, or are they just expensive landmarks (i.e. do people actually live and/or work in them)?

If I decide to cheat (I always like to have two cities going simultaneously, one where I play by the rules and one where I cheat and build big fast), is there a faster way to get more Simoleons than just typing in "weaknesspays" over and over?

Umm,what the hell? i've been playing SC4 on and off for about 5 months and i cant get a decent sized city to save my life. I load a large city, take up about 50 percent of the map, and my population tops out at 1.000. Evreything is in place--high paying commercia, industrial jobs, private schools, rewards, etc---for my city to be huge. But it stays at about 12,000 people, tops. Even when I try to zone medium or dense residential, nothing at all happens. So f****** frustrating.

It's taking forever for me to fill up one city and i cant get high rises!! One last thing, did u make that region? how? coz whenever i make a region, it's either all water or all land.

:D I don't know how i do, maybe I am the best?:D:lol:, now, seriously. About the region: I made all cities, one by one, first, is funny but when you have done so many cities it starts becoming boring. About the skyscrpaers? I suppose that I start zoning very dense residential and comercial very soon, I try to put as many schools and hospitals to cover all the city and I always try to put as many park as I can, off course, WITHOUT using any cheat code.
I make myself the rule that when I arrive at 50.000 hab I change to another city, to fill the region, obviusly in a couple of times, I didn't do so, that's why I have a couple of 140.000 hab. cities.

man, started a new city, already have 392 in 2 game days...no sksycrapers yet...

some with skyscrapers can tell us his secret??

In order to get residential skyscrapers you must have a res. population of over 30 000. To get commercial skyscrapers, you must have a commercial pop of over 45 000.

"You have to build your city wider before you can build it taller"

You also need the right conditions etc. etc.

It takes way too long for me to get skyscrapers without using cheats...

This isn't mine but its the best downtown area I've seen in all Simcity 4 cities!!!! :okay:

Its amazing how he was able to really blend in the real world landmarks and somehow made the Simcity 4 office towers arrange well, making the downtown area so organized and pleasant looking. :cool:

I'm having problems with industrial zones making my city too polluted, how do I solve this problem? :(

if you have simcity 4, I suggest using the Hydro/Solar powered Electricity. They don't give off any pollution.

THe problem are the industrial areas

ever since I replaced my powerplants, even with a large industrial area, the health/enviroment is still up.

Polluted city? Just build the industrial areas far away from the city. And try to create a high education so that the "dirty" industries are being replaced by high-tech jobs. Don´t know any different solutions.

Ok, one more....
This is Central-City, the town I am playing at the moment. The population is 310.000 which makes it the biggest city I have yet had. It is quite rich and there are all kinds of special buildings like opera or film studio, the most modern power plants, an airport etc.
I have built motorways around the city and so traffic is not a big problem, although I have not yet installed subways.
Getting the city big was easy, when it had about 150.000 inhabitants it continued growing without me creating many more new housing areas.
Money? As much as I want. :cool: Plus 16000 every month when taxes are about 8%.
Problems? A lot of dirty industry left, city hardly grows outside downtown.

p.s. The city "works alone" without any neighbour towns. The industrial areas and powerplants are mainly south and east, far out of the screenshot ;-)

I use www.imagestation.com. You upload the image in the original size, to the section "Storage bin" and when you link to them they are automaticly resized.;)

Heres one of my cities in my region:
Edge City...........649,000 off people - took me less than 2 weeks to make without cheats.

Had an amazing "growth spurt" that made my city make literally tons of those simleons in only a couple of years, allowing for massive growth. i have like $9,000,000 to spend - its just a pity the infrastructure is so crappy in the game - and its gay that they are now releasing a add-on pack which we have to pay for to get the proper roads that should have already been included in the game

My total region population is around 894,000...approaching the 1,000,000 mark :)

not so long.... I started it before easter, but after it, I haven't play since a week ago, more or less.

I've been playing the game a bit more lately. I've got my metro up to 530,000 now. There are 4 cities all around 100k, with a few small satellite towns.

Metro nearly 800k
major city 300k
another 140 k city
the other ones aprox 80k

My metro area is around 1,040,000.

My largest city has a population of 650,000, one city at 250,000, another at 150,000 (approx)

I have another city which is all industrial (all on a large map :O)

I play with a modified region, whereby all cities are max sizes :) (4 x 4 = 16). I also seem to have problems taking screenshots....cause for some reason when my population in the cities go above 200,000, out in region mode they all seem to go plain (ie all the terrain which ive made myself dissapears and so does all the city, like its new, but when I load it - its fine :S).

So screenshots look really shit. Have all of you created ure own terrains?

Is there any way to create ur whole region without having to make part by part, city by city?

Quite large aint it :) Although I dunno why for some reason, but in region view all I get it with the cities above 200,000, is a plain plot of land (like its brand new, but when I load it - its fine - must be some visual bug or something) - still dont get a good diversity of buildings like ive seen in some of ure screenshots (for example, the largest scraper I have is either the blue modern Real Estates or the When Insurance - pretty gay really considering so many peeps work in the commercial sector :D

This sucks...I already have three cities linked together and i cant get my population over 20K!!! There are only a few highrises, and a cant get the houses to turn into more highrises. I cant even get any commercial highrises. The best one is Modde.inc. (sp?; the white building). Someone help.
Pollution, traffic, health and education is not a problem. I dont know what is....

3) When you play by the rules, its easy to get tons of money (in one city i topped around 9,000,000 without cheating, just by progressive taxation and clever and subtle changes in the environments of my citizens, I have thus obtained my region population of around 1,255,000 with just 3 populated cities (I have four in total, but one is industrialised)

Trust me - without cheating this game is a doddle (even though im upset by the crappy road network and have to wait and by a freaking addon pack for the correct roads I need to expand to ultimate sizes).

completly right dude!!!! Just put taxes at 8.8 or 8.9, demmand will still be high, and don't start building hospitals and schools everywhere, wait until you city have reached a some population and you have enough found to afford the monthly cost of that buildings. I haven't reach 9.000.000 but in a couple o cities I have 2.000.000. It's just matter of time to get use to the differences of the game from SC3K and then, everything goes ok:D

First of all, i'm not cheating in the cities i'm concentrating on now. I just cheated in a city i abandoned as an experiment.

I would like to say that i was really good in SC3K and managed to earn lots of money without using any cheats. I just wanted a little advice on SC4 since i'm new to it. Please, dont get all rough for nothing....

I'm still experimenting around and read other peoples' suggestions so i am learning. Freson is right, it takes time getting used to SC4 after playing SC3K. One very important lesson is to be conservative and be a slumlord.

What the hell - what have you done? Have you like added a park every 3 squares? Got all the ordinances enacted? A massive and underused or worthless mass transport system? To many power plants, water centres? garbage sites? taxes to low? should be round 6-7%, but ure in trouble, so go up to around 8% - demolish all the parks, museums, try to control all the expediture of the hospitals, schools, etc (ie dont over-spend, try to get it right on the dot). If that doesnt work (it should)......then you need to start again - sounds like some disaster zone to me

I've got my metro up to 600k now, with the main city at 150k, another at 130k and one more at 100k. There are then several more cities that are between 10k and 70k...

I bet I will have the metro up to 800k in another couple days, because it is really growing quickly now.




I still have one big gripe though. It sure would be nice as hell to have mass transit networks that actually WORK. And worse yet, there is no way to get data and research that helps you improve it. It's all hit or miss.

My metro is up to around 1,340,000 now - with just 4 cities (and one that is purely just industrial, and thus no residents).

I dislike the fact that there is'nt enough building diversity, road layouts are poor and mass-transport pants (but this is being addressed in the addon pack which should really be coming out now and we shouldnt have to pay for it :()

That sure makes me wanna go out and get a top of the line PC and a copy of SC4! Most likely I won't be getting the game til a version that includes the transit add-on comes out.:(

Pretty gay - dunno why but this is missing my 2nd largest city: Edge City (theres 650,000 people there), my largest is Mitre Lake - some 670,000, I have another city up in the top corner (but also gone blank but has around 240,000 people). My 4th and final city in this region is the one on the left which is Mountain Reach and has no population and provides the industrial jobs for Edge City. Its a bug - hope it gets addressed in a patch. And no joke - my current population for the region is 1,567,889 :) - anyone beat that?

OK, since my SimCity 4 has decided to crash everytime it hits 20,000 population and my Sims are hell-bent on polluting, building slums, and not going to school... I have determined that the most fun way to play this game is to build as big a city you can and then punish it with rocks from space! Yes, meteor storms! I am a cruel god, indeed! It's just so much fun to see how good my aim can be. ;)

So has nobody got a higher region population than me?

Currently still at: 1,567,889

I don't play much. In fact, I didn't play the game hardly at all until the second patch came out.

My region just topped 700k, but that's it. I'm not playing to get max population anyways. I did plenty of that on SC2k and SC3K.


Your cities look pretty cool...

This is meant to be the main CBD of my largest city (although it looks pretty low lying, it shows my largest building to date (the Houston looking one - think its either the largest or 2nd largest), ive got more mini-CBD's scattered about and I like to think of this main CBD as a cultural and party zone :), kinda like Covent Garden and Soho in London). My population went under some strain - dopped 10k from last update (cause I decided to redevelop a peninsula which contained all the jails, power stations, landfill, etc so that I could create a constant coast of scrapers :). Ive now put all the crappy stuff on an island (with some reclaimation):)), now theres the largest park Ive created - some 20x20 with a landmark acting as a Somerset House :) in the middle.

This is naturally all done without cheats over a lllllllllooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg period of time.

Im also proud with my roundabouts (which dont totally work as I want them, cause their meant to go in only one direction, in America - I think their called traffic circles :P) which have either an underground stop or mini plaza in them :)

So, do the roundabouts actually help with congestion?

Well I dunno why - but congestion is good for commercial - and of course having a roundabout (looks cool) causes for a quadrupal in the amount of congestion.

They also look cool and allow for a variation in the layout of cities (rather than a complete grid system). You could also add in the centre bit a subway or plaza. Grid systems may be efficient, but their boring and v repetative and that means the class and style of a city is rapidly diminished.

Also try this:

R = Residential (note make sure that it is only one square facing one side of the road)

With a pattern like this you get something like terraced housing - which looks cool (80% of the time - cause sometimes a ryan apartment might pop up)

Not to mention cul-de-sacs are imperative for a realistic look :)

Guess what happened to my most populated city.!

Well.. I was building some school or something and I needed to lower the land because it looked stupid when its up high like that and what I didn't know is that I broke the water pipes so my whole city had no water so all the buildings turned black and abandoned. and I wanted to save it because I did some renovation and it looked nice. so. blah.

Question about "regions" in this game: can you have one city just cover the whole region, or does it set the lines for you where one ends and the next begins?

Each city has certian amount of grid. Some may be big some may be small some may be huge!

Hmm... Interesting. Can someone tell me how to check what version I have? Or can they tell me if their "My Sims" box is lined in one straight line or is it two on top and three on the bottom because I recall after downloading the new update my "My Sims" option to add a new Sim into the city was lined up and now it is not.

SC 3 looks very boring after a while when you have played Sim City 4....
There is a bigger variety of buildings in SC4 I think..?

However note that the residential plots are split, so that you get 1x1 squares. Ive made some quite quaint hill top terraces flowing down into my CBD. my region population fell by 20k (down to like 1,680,000 now) as I was doing some major redevelopment along the lakefront :) I got one city up to 700k, but its in a recession at the moment and fell 40k :O - hope to get that up to at least 900,000 people.

Try this interesting idea that Ive used on some other cities in my region (and currently doing in my big redevelopment plan :))

It makes any sea/lake/river front look very spectacular and realistic. Also use roundabouts, also try to make rolling hills and rivers going through your city - makes it harder to build, but is more interesting.

So simcity.com doesn't let me register my CD key and I want to download landmarks. If anyone is willing to trust me to go on their account and download landmarks, I swear I wont do anything else except downlaod landmarks please PM me or respond please. Thanks:)

Its not perfect like some ive seen where land values are very high and the roads are all in a perfect grid.

This is a pic of the most recent area that i finished, and with that i finally have the entire map filled. Now I just have to work on perfecting the city and converting some residential areas to high density to get my population over a million, and creating a Metro for downtown. This is the eastern part of downtown.

Here's my Region. There somewhere between 1.8 and 1.9 million people living there now and I have probably used up half of the total area. There about 20 cities. I've been working on this region since the game was released in January.

And yes I've been using artmoney (cheating as some would say)cause to me this is just about building a great city. I don't want to waste time on spending every simillion the right way:)

Det er fordi jeg legede lidt med de byer der var med når man købte spillet. Skulle lige se hvordan man flyttede en by. Du kan også se at jeg har Søllerød of Farum, de var der også fra starten, der var bare næsten ikke bygget noget.

Har lige lavet en by mere i dag så nu er der over 2 millioner i regionen:)

I commend you on your work. I see that you have attempted to make avenues and some very attractive parks that would not be out of place of some cities. Im currently creating a Hyde Park type park (its octangular). I like how also the "Downtown" or CBD is walled in by the motorways/highways :)

Thaks for the comments. I've put a ton of time into my cities. The city's street grid was originally intended to look like Augustus Woodward's plan for the city of Detroit, with main avenues extending outward from a circular park. That proved to be too difficult, & so I adopted the rectangular grid. Lately I've been working a lot on the sprawl around the cities. I still need to work on a better transition from skyscrapers to the rowhouses - some medium density buildings are needed. I have 5 large cities of sprawl around my main city so far. I had to make my own avenues since maxis didn't put them in the original sim city 4. I will turn some of the roads into true avenues when Rush Hour comes out. I do have a few problems though...most of it has to do with pollution, traffic, & commute times. I need to put in some mass transit! The downtown map took the most time of anything by far. I had to take a screenshot of the city's traffic data map, increase the size, color all the roads gray, color the main boulevards red, name the main boulevards, etc. All said and done, that probably took 8 hours or so...but that was with a lot of interruptions...so probably only 4-5 hours of actual working time.

Thats an excellent site there, Furture Architect...stands to reason..

At the moment, there are downtowns everwhere! There are the three large ones, and then there are two smaller ones. The sixth one, in the city called Central is going to be expanded north as is occurring rapidly. This is going to become the mega-downtown of the region. Noone lives there, but there are over 35 000 jobs already with several stage 8 commercial service and office towers.

Where can I find blank maps for 2000 (specifically New York)?

I have a few questions about sim city 4.

I havn't actually got it but ive been a huge fan of the previous games and cant wait to get it. Unfortunatly my current computer is about 8 years old, and barly handles 3000, so 4 would just kill it! I should be getting a brand spankin' new dell hopfully in about 3-4 weeks. Which brings me to my first question; I was wondering what kinda specs i'd need to run the game at a good pace.

Also; in the game, what type of airports can you get, how many people do they handle, and are they very realistic.

And is there much of a tourist industry engine kinda thing. Im already planning my city's in anticipation, and Was gonna do a sorta beach city that relise on tourists as its main sorta income, you know the type, Gold coast, palm beach, french riviera, kinda thing.

It might seem a bit silly, but I'm very interested in these kinda things.

My region of Encounter Bay is now up past 2.02 million now! It's gone through several boom and bust cycles now, currently into the third bust cycle since I got Rush Hour, the biggest I have had yet.

I'm creating a heap of new cities at the moment. Also a lot of industry and new transportation links to encourage growth in both the new and developed cities. Should start getting large quickly.

I have sim city 3000 , what's the difference between sim city 3000 and 3000 unlimited or world edition?

Sim City 2000 still works with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, I have it installed and it works perfectly.

In sim city 3000 is it just one architecture, the american. In world edition we got three different sorts of architecture, the Americen, the british and the east asian. The world edition got at same time planty more landmarks and different gifts, depends wich sort of architectural zone you will chose. You can also switch betveen this zones with one city. The world edition is the 3 times begger that the original sim city.

I think SC4 is much easier to handle than SC3(U) IMO. I can't get any scrapers in SC3 unless I cheat. :(

In comes my update here for the first time in 3 months. Last time I posted in here was the 6th of October of 203 when I had a population of 2 million. Today the population tops 5.65 million and is still growing quite fast.
