What i find cool about all this lighting is that they even put lights on buildings that aren't completed, something i haven't really seen before. At the rate Gz is going with the lighting, it can surely compete with Hong Kong soon.

I don't understand why this is still listed as being U/C, it has looked topped out for the past couple of months. Are they thinking of adding height to the antenna?

^^ I guess it's because the pod riding part is still U/C. You can see in this pic there's a small crane on the top.

With the gravitation ride being installed in the inside of the base of the antenna, I wonder if those grey panels that were are seeing are panels of glass with plastic still stuck on them. If this is the case it would be such a cool ride.

Hi kraper.

Topped out is a far cry from completed. Many projects are still U/C for a year or more after top out. In the case of the BK it may very well be more than 2 years.

Lol @ the jokes but this tower is fucking serious! Writing a movie with scenes based around this tower ~ GZ is a beast!!

brian.bauer
November 1st, 2010, 05:06 AM
Uhhh, yes. I'm serious. I love the height and design of this tower, but the lighting is F&%ing rainbow. Overly flamboyant. I personally love the "black suite and tie" lighting that has made major cities in the USA look serious. Overly extravagant lighting just looks like Vegas to me (this is why Houston will always beat Dallas in my opinion).

I'm sure this is impressive in real life though, maybe I would change my opinion if I saw it in real life?

China, Hong Kong and many other Asian skylines like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have very bright and colourful skylines at night time. The colour represents vibrancy and energy within the skylines. Even cities like Perth is now changing to a more colourful skyline with them lighting up their towers in multicoloured lighting schemes.

^ I'm sure this fits in perfectly well in Asia as you've noted...I just find architecture more appealing when it doesn't look like it belongs in Disneyland.

I kind of agree with Brian. But hey, maybe it's just us. Maybe the rest of the world is way less prim and proper than America thinks they should be. I'll have no idea until I start travelling overseas.

EDIT: Btw, Houston does pretty much pwn Dallas. Just sayin'. :)

November 2nd, 2010, 07:34 PM
I agree this is just too much color. For special days I can see the point of it but for a regular day I prefer more "classy" lighting like just white or a "cold" blue maybe smt like parliament blue.

Hi all.

Great hour long documentary on this tower on National Geographic tonight called "Tallest TV Tower in the World".
Some good info and construction video. I missed half of it but it will be on again in a couple hours.

Funny how learning and getting info through the net leaves pronunciation lacking. I've been following and collecting pics/info on this project for years now.
I've always pronounced guangzhou - gang zoo.
After watching the doc I now know it's gwong joe. :)

skywalk stairway spirals around core from 160 to 350 meters
2 water tanks above relolving restaurant for damping - 600 tons each
2 tuned mass dampers in spire - 2 tons each

Hi, Thanks for all the comments on the lighting of the Canton Tower. The shape of the tower, by www.iba-bv.com, is amazing and very thankful to light. We chose for a concept that allows the tower to radiate, to be luminous, rather than a typical uplighting scheme where the light comes from the environment (spotlights on posts) to light up the tower. We thought a luminous tower is more of a strong metaphorical message: the tower giving its energy to the city rather than the other way around.

The lighting scheme has been put together by a team of experts: Arup Lighting during the concept and preliminary design stage, Changsha Planning & Design Institute for further detailing of the concept, Philips Lighting taking care of the engineering stage and the supply of the lights, and myself in the early stages of the project conceptualizing the lighting design (I worked for Arup at that time). The architects have also been involved quite a bit in the beginning, validating the early lighting design ideas.

All in all a great example of how collaboration as a team delivers awesome results. This lighting design is truly innovative due to its scale and controllability, and offers a lot of scenic options in the future. Imagine that local artists, designers, students etc will be assigned to create software that choreographes the light on Canton Tower... That would be fantastic, a true blend of cultures and views on architecture and the city at night.

Your comments are much appreciated, also please feel free to leave your comments on my website. I apologise my photographs are not hi-resolution like some of the amazing photos in this thread, but they capture a unique moment: the inauguration of the lighting design of the Tower.

For more info on the lighting of Canton Tower, see www.rogiervanderheide.com

Jesus, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about that. Reminds me of the time I went up in the St. Louis Arch, but this would be so much worse.

Even though I like the Oriental Pearl in Shanghai (especially at night time) I kinda wish they would replace it with something a bit more modern like this...this is a great building!

^^Pudong skyline would look 100 times better with this thing replacing the Pearl tower..

Just a little disappointed that the night light scheme on this tower is still a bit tacky. They should come up with some more futuristic colors than rainbow colors.

It's amazing how quickly those glass floors get all scuffed up! Once that gleam is gone the effect is always gone for me. CN Tower's are just dreadful!

Yeah, i've been in multiple towers with glass floors but this one is the craziest I think. The twisting of the tower makes it extra uncomfortable. I already get this weird feeling in my stomach when looking at the picture.

Visited Guangzhou 17 years ago in 1993, what a change, wow  .

Tower looks great, as a Dutchman I feel proud :) (Dutch architecture and lightning).

But also a little jealous, in China these kind of buildings get build, in Holland we have to wait a very long time for something like this .

I have a feeling that, no matter how many pictures of this tower I see, they pale in comparison to seeing it in person. It makes me want to visit Guangzhou just for that reason. Congrats on an amazing structure!

Even the difference in the past 2-3 years has been very drastic! They're building a completely new CBD!

^^ why, he/she is stating his/her personal opinion. in my opinion the tower is amazing but that is his/her opinion. remove the post if you must but baning is not necessary there. back to the tower. is the lighting on every night in the downtown or just on special occaisions. i'd imagine there would be special lights for special occaisions like coloured lights but is there plain lights for normal nights. and is there a light show on a normal night.

Agree about respecting people's opinion, also judging from his or her avatar, I don't think we should be so worked up by someone's (sometimes questionable) taste.

^^ lol. thats a nice way of saying he/she has no taste, lol. back on topic, how long before the pods are open to the public? anyone know, i'd really like to see pics from the pods, and one last thing, aproximately how long should it take to complete one trip around the tower in one of the pods

Well, in contrast with China there is freedom of speech here, but I don't like people who say something is ugly without proper motivation either.

That is just sick, looking straight down 100s of meters with just a thin sheet of glass protecting you from a long fall down.

in the CN Tower in Toronto there is a similar platform :)

ausie
December 29th, 2010, 05:31 AM
^^ and in melbourne's eureka tower and Sydney's Centrepoint tower.

but does it cost extra to go use this platform, like, do you pay a fee to go to the observation level then maybe a surcharge to use the platform?

there are more and more platforms made with glass floor nowadays. but the twist here is certainly unique and makes the platform even more interesting.
