As they have problems with the facade of the Burj Dubai, this tower could become the tallest free standing structure in the world for a short time.

My favorite design for this project didn't win but i'm sure that it will look amazing when it's finished. 610m is unbelievably tall, the only way you can truly appreciate the height is by actually seeing it in real life.

CULWULLA
February 26th, 2007, 12:18 AM
i still only look at this structure as 450m.with a 160m spike on top.
i mean the spike could be 30m high or 300m high .
CN tower seems to be more flowing design. you probably wont see the spike from ground level.only when from a distance.

CULWULLA

id say the current height would be 40m-50m.
bamboo is actually really strong, as strong as steel scaffolding

nezzybaby
March 14th, 2007, 02:31 PM
^indeed bamboo is one of the most surprising substances on the planet, i've always wondered why you never see massive bamboo structures or bamboo reinforced concrete, its used for scaffolding on account of its cheapness so why not?

Anyway this is the most amazing construction project going up right now in my eyes, its such an unconventional design, and the size of those steel tubes is incredible. I look forward to watching this rise over the next few years its gonna be awesome.

Fire Safety and the material is not as permanent.
Anyway, bamboo reinforced concrete can be found in many small-scale buildings.

Hi all.
What a cool looking structure. Open looking structure instead of all concrete.
In an earlier shot in this thread I noticed how huge the structure is that is being built surrounding the base - but not part of the base of the tower.
Tried searching out some new construction pics - to no avail - but I will keep searching.

This is a TV tower, so it must have antenna...Even only 450m without antenna, it is already the world's highest TV tower. If you take a look at the CN tower, it is actually less than 400m

How on earth did you come to your conclusion? If this tower is 450m to the top minus antenna, it is SHORTER than the CN Tower. The CN Tower to the top of concrete pour below the metal antenna is 457m or 1500 ft. The top observatory of CN is at 447m.

What is the exact height of the top floor of this tower?

It was me and i completely stand by my statement, the cn tower is a spike with a donut on the top, it looks the same as every obseration tower that came before it, and most that have come since, the fact that its tall doesnt make it attractive. This is intricate, interesting, unique, attractive and apart from anything else biggger then CN. I dont think many people will agree with your statement there, this IS what i call beautiful, the CN tower is NOT.

When this has been built and gained recognition amongst more than just the obsessive skyscraper geeks like ourselves i reckon if you show anyone a picture of this and one of CN the vast majority will vote this as the most attractive.

Um actually I beg to differ. I think you're just blinded by biasedness just because the CN Tower is in the same country as you!

As everyone else outside of Canada would say, this tower is going to be much more elegant than the CN Tower.

Yeah I don't know... atleast from the renderings it appears to be VERY thin for it's height...

For a TV tower, there are only two major functions.
1. Broadcasting TV signals
2. Obversion.

As for Guangzhou TV tower, the external steel structure should already provide a good stability for the whole building so the center cube doesn't need to be huge.

Btw, I think the center cube+external steel structure looks bigger than the CN tower.

Sentient Seas

You're right, it is only used for a couple of different things. It won't be constantly occupied at all levels or anything so no wonder it's so skinny.

W Hotel will take the hotel space here is the press from W Hotel:

W Guangzhou Hotel & Residences to Debut in 2010

White Plains, N.Y. – March 15, 2007 – Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT), today announced the continued expansion of W Hotels across the globe with plans for its third hotel in China. The W Guangzhou will make its debut in 2010, offering 320 guest rooms and 167 luxury residences, in addition to the innovative design and full-range of branded amenities guests have come to expect of W Hotels.

Ideally located in China’s largest southern coastal city, Zhujiang New Town, the W Guangzhou will be the cornerstone of a new upscale, mixed-use complex which will feature luxury boutiques and shops. Developed as an extension of the existing central business district, Zhujiang New Town is anticipated to become the new recreation and entertainment center in Guangzhou with existing facilities such as the Warner Brothers Movie Theatre, retail malls, entertainment venues, a high-end residential development, and the Guangzhou Opera House and Museum.

“Following the announcements of the W Hong Kong and the W Shanghai, The W Guangzhou is a logical extension of W’s dynamic growth in China,” said Ross Klein, President of Starwood Luxury Brand Group. “We are excited about the tremendous opportunities and demand for the W brand in this booming gateway to southern China.”

The W Guangzhou will be an exciting addition to the brand's fast-growing international collection of hotels in the world's most vibrant cities and emerging destinations. W, the fastest growing luxury hotel brand in the world, has recently announced plans to open hotels in Barcelona, Istanbul, Athens, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Koh Samui, Santiago, Dubai and Doha. These properties will follow the highly successful openings of the W Retreat & Spa-Maldives, W Montreal, and W Mexico City.

Guangzhou is the third wealthiest city in mainland China and the economic center of Pearl River Delta, the heart of one of China’s leading commercial and manufacturing regions. It is the capital city of Guangdong and the political, economical, cultural and technological hub of Guangdong province. I think this W hotel is located in the Guangzhou West Tower(450M or 532M, and bigger than the Shanghai SWFC), which is a skyscraper that is u/c.

These properties will follow the highly successful openings of the W Retreat & Spa-Maldives, W Montreal, and W Mexico City.

umm... When you watching CNN from your cable, do you think it is all the way cabling from NYC to your cable station, all via pricy $$ satelite or using TV tower across the US, allso it is very hard to make satelite service work without dish at the TV tower sending sending image to teh satelite. Just for the footnote we are the one need more TV towers to handle all the new TV and HD radio stations, also for cell phone, weather, and goverment comm.....etc. etc.

As the title of the building indicates, it is a TV tower, sending out TV signals so people can have better receptions. Just like the CN tower in Toronto.

Not just simple. I have the cinema, hotel and shops inside. In addition, it will mix with Guangzhou Twins Tower, CITIC plaza to create the Skyline of the CITY.

Most of people does not know that Guangzhou is the richest city in china in term of GDP per CAPITA (Shainghai is 2000 USD away (8000 to 10000USD), sup??? the total is 83 (GZ) to 130 Billion (Shanghai)). I think Shanghai is more famous because the skyline take some impacts.

In conclusion, GZ should build that tall building!

I fully realize what TV towers are for. My point is more about why one on this scale is necessary. Antennas like the ones on top of the Sears Tower or the former WTC in New York work perfectly well at a tiny fraction of the cost. Don't get me wrong, I love this project and think it's beautiful.

And Mr. Alloy - Sure I could have a different avatar, but I think this one is funny. I'll change it when I get tired of it.

Not really a fraction of a cost when you consider that those buildings were expensive to build. If you don't just have a Sears Tower sitting around in your neighborhood, it kind of limits your options. The antenna operators pay a fair amount of money for roof privileges to put their antennas on the skyscrapers. And even in Chicago, where, cable and satellite are about as ubiquitously available as anywhere in the world, there is debate as to whether the Sears Tower and JHC will be enough to handle the demand for HD terrestrial broadcast signals.

I think Shanghai is more involved with the banking and tech industries. Much of Guangdong region's development spills over from HK and Macau, which may be one of the causes of its high GDP.

^^ It looks like a monster because tou can see the raw structure that is needed to lift the bulk off the buildings weight and it isnt clean but after construction they clean it and clad it so it is gonna look coowl and friendly :D

I like the way the steel tubes are rotating around the building. Realy looks good.

the main deck is approx 440m high.
