snapdragon May 19th, 2009, 08:33 AM See the thing thatworries me is .The building will be surronded with lot of skyscrapers AND this expected wind will be blocked by all the surronding tall towers.
SilentStrike May 19th, 2009, 09:02 AM ^^no, its got the axis where wind comes through. U can see in the models that this tower is spun a certain way. That is so that wind comes through the 'axis' where no buildings are, through to the turbines of the pearl tower :D

huh... really??
snapdragon May 31st, 2009, 11:46 AM ^^ IT is possible to top out this year, afterall it is a very very thin tower so it should not take much time to topout but i am skeptical about long would it take it to set in all those wind turbines that could take a while i guess

architect's website say 2010... maybe it is a "soft opening" or that the outside is done but they still have to finish the inside.

Supertower offers glimmer of hope in polluted Chinese city
Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou is being billed as a green beacon amid the pollution of China's construction boom

Heaven Net June 25th, 2009, 05:23 AM China skyscraper plan will generate energy
22 February 2006
Professional Engineering
A skyscraper design that claims to produce more energy than it uses is trying to win a three-horse race for a corporate headquarters competition in Guangzhou in southern China.
The designers of the 69-storey Pearl River Tower claim that the tower will raise the bar for sustainable design. Architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is planning to harvest wind and solar energy for the development in the subtropical port. Its design wants to direct and manage the region's often fierce winds so they become "invisible braces" that stiffen the tower.
"This is a skyscraper for a new age," said Adrian Smith, consulting design partner at SOM. "Its sculpted facade will direct wind to a pair of openings on the building's mechanical floors. The travelling winds push turbines which generate energy for the building's heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. These openings also relieve wind pressure on the face of the building."
SOM claims energy consumption is reduced by maximising natural daylight, reducing solar gain in air conditioned spaces, retaining rainwater for grey-water usage and using the sun to heat the hot water supply. Stack venting, radiant slab cooling and caisson heat sinks work to chill the building. AC current is generated by solar collectors on the facade.
SOM is also the architect for the Freedom Tower on the site of the World Trade Center in New York, which is due to open in 2010.
However, the Freedom Tower will not use wind turbines like the Pearl River Tower following a design re-jig last year. This led to the abandoning of wind turbines for what will be the US's tallest building. It was decided the canopy of other skyscrapers would cause troublesome turbulence and limit efficiency.
SOM Wins Design Competition for Sustainable Skyscraper in China
CHICAGO, March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP has won an international competition in China to design one of the most environmentally-sustainable buildings in the world, the Chicago-based architecture and engineering firm announced today.
SOM -- in cooperation with the Guangzhou Pearl River Engineering Construction Supervision Corp., and Guangzhou Design Institute -- will design Pearl River Tower, a 69-story corporate headquarters, for the CNTC Guangdong Company. The tower will be located in Guangzhou China, a subtropical port city of 6.6 million located 182 kilometers from Hong Kong.
"This project represents our commitment to sustainable design," SOM Managing Partner Thomas Kerwin said. "It also represents our commitment and spirit of mutual collaboration with China's design professionals, government and industry in pushing sustainable design best-practices."
Sleek and cutting-edge, Pearl River Tower will be an instant icon. SOM's design and engineering teams sought to create a visually-appealing building that produces as much energy as it consumes.
"The tower will absorb its environment and use it to its advantage," said project design architect, Gordon Gill of SOM. "It is a high performance instrument shaped by the sun and the wind."
The tower boasts an array of design and mechanical features. Winds directed into openings on the mechanical floor would power turbines that operate the tower's heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Solar collectors convert the sun's energy into electricity. Energy consumption is diminished by maximizing natural day-lighting, reducing solar gain in air conditioned spaces, retaining rainwater for consumption by HVAC systems and using the sun to heat the hot water supply. Stack venting, heat sinks and slab cooling cool the building.
SOM Consulting Design Partner for the tower Adrian D. Smith said the design "embodies the strategies of energy conservation and energy production we have endeavored to integrate into supertall projects for over a decade."
SOM was selected over seven design firms from four countries. CNTC Guangdong Company President Xiang Jin Cheng said the design "is the prototype for the intelligent building of the future -- highly efficient, sustainable and self sufficient."
Groundbreaking is scheduled for July 2006 with occupancy in fall 2009.

deepblue01 October 22nd, 2009, 12:46 AM lol when they say that other buildings in China are highly energy inefficient. Aren't they like any other buildings built in the world?
ilovecz October 22nd, 2009, 01:17 AM BBC just has this attitude. When they report anything in China, they can't help adding some negative comments of their own. Some are far from the facts and not logical at all, and some are just irrelevant to the subject. It is very skilled in embedding those negative comments in the context, and it is a very narrow minded media in general.

Some are far from the facts and not logical at all, and some are just irrelevant to the subject. It is very skilled in embedding those negative comments in the context, and it is a very narrow minded media in general.
I think what they're trying to highlight is that people shouldn't get excited about China turning a green leaf - excuse the expression lol - that its a step in the right direction but overall China has a lot more to do! The BBC tends to reflect the general British publics attitude, which in most cases with China is that alot of reform is needed but development is good news, not a case of China Bashing! As for the BBC being narrow minded, well i dont need to argue this point as its know to be one of the, if not the largest news corporation in the world and is often voted the best by both the British and foreigners! Sorry to get off the topic but felt the need to defend lol!
As for the tower, ive loved this design since i saw it, and its a brilliant development for Guangzhou!
SilentStrike October 22nd, 2009, 02:49 PM I dont see how quotes like these are true/ necessary
"Rising high through the polluted air of Guangzhou City" -- I havent seen any polluted sky in this thread.
"And a Western businesswoman I bumped into told me her firm couldn't persuade Chinese clients to invest in more energy-efficient vehicles even if she could prove that they would start paying back their owners in energy costs is just 10 months. " -- what does this have to do with the building
And the video: All buildings around the world are just as inefficient
The video is taken on a foggy morning, and IDK if this is coincidence but they show all surroundings EXCEPT the beuatiful West Tower, only the ugly residentials.
Even in an article that is suposed to give boost to china's image, they manage to make it bash china :S
deepblue01 October 22nd, 2009, 03:26 PM ^^ It is so easy to say that China is polluted and persuade people to believe that. It is also easy to say that China uses inefficient buildings and persuade people to believe it as well!!!!
China has done a lot in terms of clearing up the environment and it will continue to. Having said that, I'm almost certain that the media will not give them much credit though... because its China.
China's large population will certainly lead to more pollution, as people move out of poverty, they will consume more and this will lead to more pollution, in order to achieve a GDP which satisfies the media and the rest of the world, they will need a greater economy, which leads to more pollution. But if you take the amount of pollution released per person, then they are quite moderate. lol, then people will say that they have low GDP and the argument continues...........
If BBC is a world class news corporation, it should focus more on equaltiy and educating the public about things happening around the world, rather than pleasing the 'public's attitude'
Anyway, hopefully this thread can return back to its topic and that video and article be posted and discussed in '
Post here the most ridiculous lies about China you find in the Western media' threat lol

Harrabin's Notes: Green tower
BBC environment analyst Roger Harrabin reports on the tower block under construction in China which could lead the way in green building technology.
THE GREEN TOWER OF GUANGZHOU CITY
A closer look at the Pearl River Tower
Rising high through the polluted air of Guangzhou City in southern China is a 71-storey tower block which, according to its designers, will be the most energy-efficient in the world.
Among a host of features designed either to make or save energy, the one that caught my eye was the shape of the Pearl River Tower itself.
It is built in a curve, facing the prevailing winds. And it has been deliberately sculpted to increase the speed of that wind and force it through slots in the building where wind turbines will be located.
Now, on many buildings, wind turbines are a waste of space because there's so much turbulence in cities. I heard an apocryphal story about a Japanese firm that installed a turbine which needed electric power to keep it turning to save the face of its would-be-green owners.
But the American architects of this tower - SOM - insist that their experiments in a wind tunnel show this building will generate economically viable wind power.
The vertical axis turbines will be located in the mechanical floors mandated by the Chinese government as emergency muster floors, so no usable office space will be lost.
SOM claims that by thinking carefully about the use of space combined with energy-saving and energy-generating technology, they have been able to make unprecedented gains, so this building will potentially create as much energy as it uses.
They are by no means the only architects to espouse the principle of integrated design, of course. But some observers believe that too many buildings are still being put up with a few bolt-on green features, without proper thought as to what could be achieved through a more considered approach.
Take the cooling system in the tower. Most of the time, air conditioning is done by fat air ducts which gobble both energy and space between floors and ceilings. Here the cooling is done by a cool water system.
The water flows in ducts through concrete beams, and cool air descends upon the toiling masses from cold water radiators in the ceilings.
Ame Englehart (BBC)
Ame Englehart says the building could only have been commissioned in China
This doesn't just save energy. SOM say it saves so much space that it's allowed the building's owners to put in an extra five storeys of usable office floor at little extra cost. Indeed, they predict that the extra investments in the building will start making the money in five years.
There are other green features too. There's a wide-spaced double-glazed wall, which channels hot air upwards to a mechanical floor where it's harnessed for dehumidification.
There's also substantial use of solar photovoltaic technology on the frontages of the building, which curve upwards toward the sun, although the current cost of photovoltaic arrays militated against cladding the building completely in energy-generating glass.
Inside there are numerous automatic control systems to make sure power isn't being wasted.
SOM say they could have coaxed the building to produce more energy but it would have been futile because there's no facility in Guangzhou to feed self-generated power back into the grid. To many, this will be a familiar tale.
'Radical' design
I can't verify whether all its claims are true, but the building is undoubtedly an exciting project.
Ame Englehart, director of SOM's East Asia office said: "This building is so radical it could only have been commissioned in China. The owners are very self-confident and have been prepared to push the design as far as it will go."
SOM insists that the design is site-specific and can't just be replicated elsewhere.
But the sad observation from my viewpoint standing on the girders of the 24th floor is that this tower is very much the exception rather than the rule.
The Chinese government has increased building standards recently but they still don't lead to anything like the performance of the Pearl River Tower.
A report in the China Daily during my trip suggested that 40% of bribery cases in China involve property development.
And a Western businesswoman I bumped into told me her firm couldn't persuade Chinese clients to invest in more energy-efficient vehicles even if she could prove that they would start paying back their owners in energy costs in just 10 months.
HOW THE TOWER SAVES ENERGY
- The Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou City stands 309m tall
- High temperature fuel cells complement the sustainable systems
- The outer skin controls glare and includes a photovoltaic system for energy
- Wind turbines generate power which can be fed to mechanical equipment
- The design incorporates a "high performance" building envelope
- An air displacement system relies on raised floors
- Cooling tower water passes through embedded tubes in the building

I believe they are just test pieces. It's not fair to judge yet, but seeing only the few so far I'm not too impressed with the color. Blueish-grey-green just doesn't do it for me on this one. I hope the final cladding is far better. I think black with a bronze hint like the Sears Towers would look pretty cool.

I'm sure SOM took into account the future density of the area. But I wonder as well how much power is really going to be generated. With The Pinnacle going up very close by, and other future tall buildings and high rises, it's going to effect the wind patterns. I have my doubts as well.
The Bank of America tower in NYC also had plans for wind turbines at the top but abandoned the idea when they discovered it wasn't practical due to the wind patterns.

That there's not really any point (in terms of pollution) to make buildings energy efficient
but dont get me wrong, I really like this building.
Too bad it is too much hidden behind other buildings.
You clearly have no idea wth ur talking about.
it was mentioned 3 posts ago that this building is not 'hidden', or would you want some kind of 'Taipei 101' effect?

Dancing Banana January 9th, 2010, 03:30 PM "That there's not really any point (in terms of pollution) to make buildings energy efficient"
so what makes you say that? because its totally wrong!
SilentStrike January 9th, 2010, 03:55 PM You think that the creation of all these "energy efficient technologies" don't cost any energy at all?
If this building were just a box it would be much more efficient(in terms of energy and finance) even in the long run.
IDK where I read but there was a quote: "green energy doesn't decrease pollution, it only relocates it".
because its totally wrong!
Who are you to decide that?
You give me no explanation nor arguments, so what a useless statement that is.
foxmulder January 9th, 2010, 04:20 PM Well, for some of the "green" products what SilentStrike says is absolutely true. For example Toyata' s Prius is advertised as "green" solely based on its millage which is around 50mph. That sound really nice right? However it has that "cute" nickel batteries. Guess what nickel mining does to environment.... Moreover these cars are much more complex. Just to make things easier to explain, they have two engines instead of one. So, they are heavier than a comparable cars and more resources should be used in order to built one. End result, more damage to environment. If you really want to be environmental friendly buy a diesel car. Same millage is easily achievable. This might be true for these environmental friendly buildings too. Since they are more complex at the end they might hurt the environment. But who will do the research???
droneriot January 9th, 2010, 06:29 PM You give me no explanation nor arguments, so what a useless statement that is.
You gave no explanation or argument for your own statement in the first place. Please enlighten us on how adding wind turbines to a building causes massive pollution.
Dancing Banana January 9th, 2010, 06:47 PM im sure green buildings are efficient on the long term. it takes more ressources to build (maybe), but after a certain time they save energy. they need less energy that would be produced in coal powerplants... and this building even producess energy. but i think the wind turbines are more like a gimmick than a serious energy producer.
and yes, youre right, building boxes would be more efficient, but common, thats no solution ;-)
SilentStrike January 9th, 2010, 07:43 PM and yes, youre right, building boxes would be more efficient, but common, thats no solution ;-)
Indeed, that's why I do like this building, boxes are too boring. However I'm saying we shouldn't overhype the "green energy".
Good we have come to an agreement :)
Ramses January 9th, 2010, 09:26 PM I guess the produced energy will be completely used to lit up the building at night. That shouldn't be a problem anyway. Go for it, a building with this design deserves to be lit up. :)
Blijf aub gewoon lekker bij Het strijkijzer of bij de kroon ofzo. You little rascal, go vomit another furball or something.
P05 January 10th, 2010, 09:31 PM imo, this energy efficient barely makes a differenece if at all.
its just cus all the ppl in the world are like: OMG! pollution AAAHHHHHHHHH!!
Totally agree with this.
GreenMonk108 January 11th, 2010, 08:32 PM Hm, is it going to have noise pollution for those office quarters located near two big turbines? I suppose no one want to rent their offices near those locations. :)

toddhubert January 15th, 2010, 12:06 AM love the cladding!
Atmosphere January 15th, 2010, 01:01 AM And there is still a lot of protective foil on a lot of panels which means it will be even better! This will be one of my favorites around the world.
UrbanPrincess January 15th, 2010, 06:24 PM the design is remarkable. looks so much better than what Dubai is putting out there
the spliff fairy January 16th, 2010, 12:22 AM cant wait till they take the film off the cladding
skyscraper100 January 16th, 2010, 12:47 AM love the glass. this will be great

luci203 January 18th, 2010, 06:23 PM That there's not really any point (in terms of pollution) to make buildings energy efficient.
Actually it is.... we need more energy efficient buildings. ;)
But the main direction to improve energy consumption is right from the design. Try to build buidings that consume less energy for heating/cooling/light/etc is the main goal, and where is the real economy. Turbines are just for fun (just like a spire) but when a better designed building consumes 20-30% less energy than a conventional building, the economy rise to millions every year...
the design is remarkable. looks so much better than what Dubai is putting out there
Yeah, but look at the SIZE of those buildings... :naughty:
snapdragon January 19th, 2010, 08:55 AM Size of those buildings .Yeah they attached a 160 mt antenna to burj khalifa and made a 660 mt tall building look 820 mt .Remember China as of now has 4 parallel 600 mt supertalls under construction
The Shanghai Zhongxin or the Shanghai tower
The Guangzhou Tv tower
The Pingan International finance tower
The China 117
Another building in wuhan has been given approval which is 600 mts + For more info on that ask z0rg.
Dubai has built one tower that is the burj khalifa and has created so much media hype that i am tired of reading anything about dubai any longer

What nationalist nonsense are you talking about .I am neither from china nor I am an ethnic Chinese. I was just responding to a not so factually correct point stated by some guy ahead of me and was giving my side of my view .If you have forgotten then please repeat after me .This is a forum where people give their side of the views.
Maybe if you are just fien with one side of a discussion you woudl be better of reading newspapers rather than coming to forums where people discuss views

english language has no similar pronounciation.
you can try: guang=[gwa:ŋ] zhou=zO(the alphabt O's pronounciation)
